Pastor’s Letter February 7, 2021 Dear Parish Family, It is hard to believe but the season of Lent is just around the corner. It is also hard to believe that last year at this time a mysterious disease called Coronavirus was just a distant concern on the news each night. Who would have imagined how our lives would change, and so quickly! Lent began in the usual way last year but just days into the season, life as we knew it came to a halt. We are more experienced now with how to be safe and yet be able to continue some of the most essential parts of life — like the practice of our faith! Yes, we will have Ash Wednesday this year. We will have our day filled with opportunities for all of us to mark the beginning of the season of Lent. What we cannot do is impose ashes on the foreheads of each person — one by one. Yes I know that is a very important symbol but the risk, however small, could be very important to others. What we can do is use a symbol that is actually more common in Europe: the sprinkling of a bit of ash on the head of each person by the minister of ashes. We will also have some cards with prayers and ashes for the homebound that you can take with you. Let’s keep the important thing in focus — Lent is an opportunity for change and growth, not just a smudge on our foreheads. Second, will have a mission this year. It will on Tuesday night each of the five full weeks of Lent from February 23 to March 23, the week before Holy Week. The mission will consist of Mass at 7 PM with a special guest speaker each week. You can see the whole program on the opposite page. The Mission will focus on St. Joseph as the protector of our church and as a powerful inspiration for our prayer and spirituality. Pope Francis has declared 2021 as a Year of St. Joseph. The pope is thinking of St. Joseph’s importance to the church at this time as a source of protection for all those in our world who are suffering and struggling because of the pandemic. Of course, we will be streaming the mission live each week as well as keeping a recording for everyone to visit during the week. So yes, Lent will begin, a mission will be held, and we will all be prepared to celebrate Easter!

Looking Ahead to Lent

Sincerely yours in Christ!

Reg. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

Religious Education Schedule Next Classes

Sunday, February 7 and Wednesday, February 10 - In-person and Zoom classes will take place. On February 14 and 17, classes are not held. On February 17, Ash Wednesday, students will start their next two Faith in Action activities, which focus on a meaningful observance of Lent.

Thanks to the publishers

who are partners with us in passing on the Faith.

Our religious education program is built on a number of components: ● Classes with catechists on alternate weeks are

the cornerstone of our program. Students discuss each week’s gospel, learn about the life of Jesus, prepare for sacraments, and learn particular topics about our faith on each grade level.

● Through Faith in Action activities, students work with their families, use technology, and apply what they have learned in class to their everyday life.

● Gospel Weeklies provide a variety of learning activities and ways for students to learn about each Sunday’s gospel on their particular grade level. Resources for families using these resources are provided at https://www.pflaumweeklies.com/family/

● Other material, such as textbooks from Sadlier and Loyola Press publishing, and a variety of activities, round out the program.

What to Expect

Valentine’s Day Marriage Vow Renewal Mass Sunday, February 14, at the 9:30 mass. What could be better than an opportunity to renew your marriage vows here in our beautiful Church? Join us at mass or join us online to renew your vows together and receive a special blessing.

Ash Wednesday and Lent Ash Wednesday is February 17 and stay tuned for some very creative ways in which we will celebrate the beginning of Lent. We will also have a Parish Mission this year—either live or virtual or both depending on the circumstances.

Music at the Basilica Our live and virtual Lessons and Carols was a huge success. I am looking forward to having more special events this spring. Stay tuned!

Holy Week Without a doubt we will be celebrating Holy Week both live and remote as we can. Last year more people than ever were able to celebrate Holy Thursday and Good Friday with us. This year I am counting on our Confirmation Students to help us celebrate Living Stations of the Cross as a live and remote experience.

Lent is Near - Help Gather Last Year’s Palm Lent begins on February 17th — Ash Wednesday. As many Catholics know, the ashes used on Ash Wednesday come from the burning of last year’s palm branches. To help us celebrate this connec on, you are all invited to bring palm from last year to church on the weekend of February 13/14 that they may be used to mark the beginning of Lent this year.

Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father; God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God; begotten not made, consubstantial with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation He came down from heaven. By the power of the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day He rose again, in fulfillment of the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, He is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Sunday Readings—Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: Job 7:1-4, 6-7

Job spoke, saying: Is not man’s life on earth a drudgery? Are not his days those of hirelings? He is a slave who longs for the shade, a hireling who waits for his wages. So I have been assigned months of misery, and troubled nights have been allotted to me. If in bed I say, “When shall I arise?” then the night drags on; I am filled with restlessness until the dawn. My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle; they come to an end without hope. Remember that my life is like the wind; I shall not see happiness again. Second Reading: I Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-33

Brothers and sisters: If I preach the gospel, this is no reason for me to boast, for an obligation has been imposed on me, and woe to me if I do not preach it! If I do so willingly, I have a recompense, but if unwillingly, then I have been entrusted with a stewardship. What then is my recompense? That, when I preach, I offer the gospel free of charge so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel. Although I am free in regard to all, I have made myself a slave to all so as to win over as many as possible. To the weak I became weak, to win over the weak. I have become all things to all, to save at least some. All this I do for the sake of the gospel, so that I too may have a share in it.

Gospel: Mark 1:29-39

On leaving the synagogue Jesus entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John. Simon’s mother-in-law lay sick with a fever. They immediately told him about her. He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. Then the fever left her and she waited on them. When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons. The whole town was gathered at the door. He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak because they knew him. Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. Simon and those who were with him pursued him and on finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.” He told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.” So he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee.

Reflection On the Gospel

February 7, 2021

Chances are, one time or another, we have all felt like Job in Sunday’s first reading: Life is a drudgery filled with months of misery and troubled nights. Days end without hope. But the rest of Sunday’s readings counter that sentiment if we listen carefully. St. Paul writes about becoming all things to save at least some for the sake of the Gospel. And in the Gospel, Jesus heals not only the bodies, but also the souls of many despite his own fatigue. Even when he tries to get away for a while to pray, he is called back and goes to fulfill his purpose on Earth. These readings should offer us much hope when we feel like Job, defeated and depressed. God is with us and will raise us up according to our needs, but, like St. Paul, we must also do what we can to lift others up who need our help one way or another.

Eucharistic Adoration on Fridays from 9 AM to Noon Pope Francis has declared this year to be time of intercessory prayer to St. Joseph. Joseph protected Mary as she gave birth to Jesus, he guarded Jesus from Herod’s attempts to de-stroy him, and he watched over the life and growth of Jesus with fatherly care. Now we ask Joseph to watch over and protect the lives of all, especially our children, born and unborn. Join us each week immediately following the Friday 9 AM Mass
