Fifth Sunday in Lent

Faith is something that is very fragile and can be easily broken. But faith is complete trust in God, the one who made a way for Israel when there was no way. This same God will make a way for you and me. There will be trials in life, of this we can count on. But we depend more so on the faithfulness of God who sent his only Son to save us from sin and death. God understands our frailty, but he never leaves us. PRELUDE Linda Hoch

The Sacrament of Holy Baptism

PRESENTATION

P: In baptism our gracious heavenly Father frees us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are born children of a fallen humanity; by water and the Holy Spirit we are reborn children of God and made members of the church, the body of Christ. Living with Christ and in the communion of saints, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God.

R: I present Cora Rae Duplessie to receive the Sacrament of Holy Baptism.

P: As you bring your child to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: to live with her among God’s faithful people, bring her to the word of God and the holy supper, teach her the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place in her hands the holy scriptures, and nurture her in faith and prayer, so that your child may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace.

Do you promise to help your child grow in the Christian faith and life?

R: I do.

P: People of God, do you promise to support this child of God and pray for her in her new life in Christ?

C: We do.

PROFESSION OF FAITH

To Parents.

P: I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church.

Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God?

R: I renounce them.

Page 4: Fifth Sunday In Lent - grace43081.org · FIRST READING: Isaiah 43:16-21 Isaiah spoke God’s declaration to the Israelites saying that they are not to remember or be concerned about

4

P Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God?

R: I renounce them.

P: Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God?

R: I renounce them.

To All the Assembly.

P: Do you believe in God the Father?

C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

P: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?

C: I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

P: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?

C: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THANKSGIVING AT THE FONT

To the congregation.

LM: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

LM: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

LM: We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight.

C: Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family, and through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. LM: At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit.

C: By the baptism of Jesus’ death and resurrection you set us free from the power of sin and death and raise us up to live in you.

LM: Pour out your Holy Spirit, the power of your living Word, that those who are washed in the waters of baptism may be given new life. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

BAPTISM

P: I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

P: Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life. Sustain those whom we baptize with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever.

C: Amen.

P: Child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever.

C: Amen.

WELCOME

LM: Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

LM: Let us welcome the newly baptized.

C: We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share: join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God's creative and redeeming word to all the world.

PRAYER OF THE DAY A Let us pray. God of new life, C you have drawn us through the waters of baptism and into your everlasting reign. Through Christ’s life within us, guide us daily through death to sin and brokenness and into new life in grace and

love; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Please be seated. PARISH CONCERNS

The Word FIRST READING: Isaiah 43:16-21 Isaiah spoke God’s declaration to the Israelites saying that they are not to remember or be concerned about what has gone before. The God who brought them out of Egypt is in control. Instead of worrying, they are to take heart and rejoice in the new thing that God is doing. 16Thus says the Lord, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters, 17who brings forth chariot and horse, army and warrior; they lie down, they cannot rise, they are extinguished, quenched like a wick: 18“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. 19Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. 20The wild beasts will honor me, the jackals and the ostriches, for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, 21the people whom I formed for myself that they might declare my praise.”

Psalm 126

Refrain

Psalm Tone L 1When the Lord restored the for- | tunes of Zion, then were we like | those who dream.

C 2Then was our mouth | filled with laughter,

and our tongue with | shouts of joy. L 3Then they said a- | mong the nations, “The Lord has done great | things for them.” C 4The Lord has done great | things for us, and we are | glad indeed. Refrain L 5Restore our for- | tunes, O Lord, like the watercourses | of the Negev. C 6Those who | sowed with tears will reap with | songs of joy. L 7Those who go out weeping, carry- | ing the seed, will come again with joy, shoulder- | ing their sheaves. Refrain SECOND READING: Philippians 3:[4b-7] 8-14

Paul told the Philippians that nothing can compare to the immeasurable worth of knowing Jesus and sharing in his resurrection. This treasure spurred Paul to press on and remain faithful, trusting in Christ, even in the midst of imprisonment and loss. He encouraged the Philippians to do likewise, to imitate his persistent faithfulness in the one who makes us righteous. [4b… (T)hough I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; 6as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. 7But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.] 8Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness

from God that depends on faith — 10that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead. 12Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

HOLY GOSPEL Luke 20:9-20 P The Holy Gospel according to Luke. C Glory to you, O Lord. Using a parable about tenants who reject and beat the messengers sent by their landlord, Jesus indirectly chastised the scribes and the chief priests for their failure to recognize him as the Son of God and listen to him. They were incensed by his criticism and plotted to find a way to turn him over to the governor. 9{Jesus} began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and let it out to tenants and went into another country for a long while. 10When the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants, so that they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11And he sent another servant. But they also beat and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12And he sent yet a third. This one also they wounded and cast out. 13Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.’ 14But

Page 11: Fifth Sunday In Lent - grace43081.org · FIRST READING: Isaiah 43:16-21 Isaiah spoke God’s declaration to the Israelites saying that they are not to remember or be concerned about

11

when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir. Let us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.’ 15And they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” When they heard this, they said, “Surely not!” 17But he looked directly at them and said, “What then is this that is written: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’? 18Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.” 19The scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him at that very hour, for they perceived that he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people. 20So they watched him and sent spies, who pretended to be sincere, that they might catch him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of the governor.

OFFERING PRAYER

A Let us pray. Merciful Father, C we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us— our selves, our time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love. Receive them for the sake of him who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Confession and Forgiveness

P In the name of the Father and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen. P Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

C Amen.

P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Silence is kept for reflection.

P Merciful Father, C we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

P Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins,

in the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION P In the night in which he was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,

and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION P This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. C Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed.
