Upcoming MCAs State Tests
The Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA’s) are scheduled for 3rd and
4th grade students in April. The reading testing window is April 15th-17th and
the math testing window is April 24th-26th. Your child’s teacher will send the
specific dates in the student’s planner. Teachers have prepared the students all
year. Currently, teachers are exposing students to practice tests to help them
become comfortable with the test formats and testing conditions. The Fieldstone goal is for 100% of the
students to take the MCA’s on the scheduled day and time. Please make every effort to have your child in
school and prepared for the MCA’s. Please have your child get a good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast
on each day of testing. It is very important that every student does their very best on these tests! Practice tests
are available at www.stma.k12.mn.us. Click on “Academics” located at the top of the page and then
“Testing” and then “MCA Practice Tests.” Thanks for your help and support!

April 29th-May 3rd is Scree Free Week! Lets all turn off our TV’s and electronic games and have some quality family time!
Parents are encouraged to turn off the TV and all electronics that are used for entertainment for the entire week. By partici-
pating, families may adopt healthy habits such as reading, exercising, and enjoying more time together. Following are some
interesting statistics from Campaign for Commercial-Free Childhood (www.screenfree.org):
On average, preschool children spend 32 hours a week with screen media.
Including multitasking, children ages 8-18 spend an average of 41/2 hours per day watching television, 1 1l2 hours
using computers and more than an hour playing video games. Time spent with screes is associate with childhood
obesity, sleep disturbances, and attention span issues.
Children with 2 or more hours of daily screen time are more likely to have increased psychological difficulties, in-
cluding hyperactivity, emotional and conduct problems, as well as difficulties with peers.
More details and forms to participate will be sent home in Friday Envelopes. Students participating in Scree Free Week will
be entered into drawings for prizes.
What will you be doing for National Screen-Free Week? Shoot some hoops. Paint a picture. Read a book. Volunteer. Go
swimming. Play tag. Bake. Fly a kite. Go for a hike. Bike ride. Have a dance party. Make a fort. Start a rock band.

Destination Imagination is an after school activity which promotes creativity, teamwork and problem solving. Students work in teams to solve challenges and present their solutions at tournaments. Teams are tested to think on their feet, work together and devise original solutions. The Terrific Stars team was coached by Madeline Johnson, 2nd grade Fieldstone teacher. Their challenge was called GAME ON. For this challenge , they had to choose a game, then research it’s use, history, and rules. They then had to write a story/play and integrate the game research. In addition they needed to create, design, and integrate a GAME GIZMO that caused an event in the story. Another element they needed to have was a “container” that went a “transformation” during the story. Also all of their props/costumes need to “start out” in this “container.” Finally, they had to research, plan, and integrate a “technical element” into the skit that used elec-tricity to accomplish a task during the presentation. All of that! All by themselves! We are super proud of our Destination Team! They earned 3rd place at the regional tournament in Blaine on March 15th and qualified for the state tournament on March 23rd. They did not place at the state tournament but several of the team members said, “Wow, that was really fun!”
The St. Michael-Albertville Rotarians shared stories with our first grade classrooms to celebrate Read Across America Day. In
addition to reading, they also gave each first grader a book. Thanks Rotarians for sharing your love of reading with our students!
