Welcome to Fields of Blood Fantasy (FOB). This document is the players pack, which will outline all the details you need to know about the event.

FOB is being run by the Auckland City Guard, as part of the annual GuardCon convention. This event grew out of the GW GT events of yesteryear, and has been a staple of the tournament scene since.

The objective of FOB is to encourage fun and competitive games – so in that spirit if it becomes apparent in the coming weeks (after we have had a chance to have some games and learn how the new rules work) that some changes need to be made to the information outlined here then I reserve the right to do so.

The advent of Warhammer 8th edition is an exciting time to be a wargamer. I'm sure you're all brainstorming powerful new lists and testing out the new rules.

While it's never my intention to discourage creative and interesting builds, I won’t apologise for trying to create the best gaming experience for as many of the players as possible. Some of you have created some real killer lists, exploiting every loophole, capable of wiping your opponent off the table. This is not the tournament for those lists!

Players at FOB are encouraged to design their lists in the spirit of moderation. Moderate lists are those with a balance of magic, shooting and combat. Lists that fail to adhere to this spirit are likely to be rejected, and the player asked to modify them. You also run the risk of incurring a points penalty should this be the case.

Moderating the lists in this way should help to give all players a more even chance of winning the event and also aim to encourage competitive and not one sided games.

A key point in the lead up to the tournament is that games workshop have signalled a commitment to publishing FAQ’s for the rules and the books to address issues – this is fantastic and we will utilise all official FAQ or errata published prior to the event.

So given that some of the fine detail of the tournament could change – in signing up for the tournament you are also agreeing that you’re fine with these changes as we look to put on the best tournament experience possible.

There is a thread on the City Guard forum that will be updated with changes to this document so that you are kept constantly up to date. http://www.cityguard.co.nz/forum/index.php/topic,2723.0.html

FOB will be one of the first 8th edition tournaments in this part of the world, and we want to make it enjoyable for as many players as possible! Let generalship and the luck of the dice rule the day!

General rules:

• No “Back of the Book” army lists are allowed • All armies must use an Army book that has been published and released

in New Zealand by 28 August 2010. Chaos Dwarf generals must use the list from the Indy GT book.

• Dogs of War armies may be used as a standalone army, using the rules published in the Warhammer Chronicles 2004, including choices permitted from the Ogre Kingdoms army book as set out in that book if desired. Regiments of Renown or Albion characters may not be used.

• Dogs of War may take a magic banner from the rulebook in a single unit of pikes, heavy cavalry or paymasters body guard.

• Non-Dogs of War armies may not include Dogs of War, Albion characters, Ogre Kingdoms or Regiments of Renown units in their army lists.

• Ogre Kingdoms armies may take rhinox cavalry. The points will count against the rare unit limit.

• All models used must be of the appropriate type for the troops they represent.

• Weapons, armour options and upgrades chosen from the army list must be shown on the majority of the models in a unit.

• Proxies are not allowed (note this does not include unit fillers, which are fine). If you are not sure then it is best to check with the TO beforehand to avoid problems later.

• No Special Characters are allowed including the “named” characters published in the 7th edition Army books. Special Character models may be used to represent 'normal' characters.

Fields of Blood will be run under the 8th Edition Warhammer Fantasy rule set.Should there be a discussion about the interpretation of a rule, an attempt should be made to resolve it by reference to the rule book and appropriate army books, including all published FAQs and erratas. Should this fail, the TO can be asked to make a decision. He will do so to the best of his knowledge, or ask for a dice to be rolled. His decisions will be final with no provision for change even if it is later found to be incorrect.

ScenariosEach round will be played with a specific scenario from the rulebook. Further information for each scenario is at the end of the players pack. Should a player choose to concede, he will receive 0 points and his opponent 20. Should a game end without the full 6 turns being played, victory points should be worked out using the state of the models as they are at the end of the last turn played.

Round Scenario

1 Meeting Engagement

2 Battle Line

3 Blood and Glory

4 Dawn Attack

5 The Watchtower

6 Battle Line

TerrainTerrain will be placed on the tables before the first game starts, and wherever possible should not be moved during the game. If it is moved, it should be returned as close to it's original position as possible.Special terrain will be labelled with the name of the feature it represents, such as 'Scree slope' or an 'Elven waystone'. The label cards will also include a summary of any special rules for the feature.Forests and rivers will remain mysterious, and players should roll at the appropriate time to see what effects they may have.

Because the terrain we are using was not designed with 8th edition 'True line of sight' (TLOS) rules in mind, we will use the TLOS rules with the following ammendment:Hills (of any height) and buildings block line of sight to all models that are not Monsters, or have the 'Large target' rule.

We will aim to have 6-8 pieces of terrain per table. In order to assist with this, it would be great if players could contribute by providing extra terrain. Players who provide one or more pieces of terrain will be in the draw to win the Terrain prize.Players will need to inform the TO prior to the event (as early as possible!) if they can provide terrain, how much, and of what type.

Painting

Most people enjoy playing games against a nicely painted army. Consequently, all models used at Fields of Blood need to be painted, with at least 3 colours and a painted base. Newer players or those who think they have a special case are welcome to contact the TO and discuss an exemption. Painting will be marked by the TO using a checklist system. The checklist is at the end of this document.

Page 6: Fields of Blood Fantasy GuardCon 2010 Players packhomepages.xnet.co.nz/~nick.irvine/Fields_of_Blood_2010_Players... · Welcome to Fields of Blood Fantasy ... The advent of Warhammer

It will not be necessary to check all check boxes to achieve maximum points. This means that your army does not have to be perfect to get good points here, but that every little extra bit of work you do is worthwhile.

Best Painted

Those armies that score full marks in the painting checklist (and have had the majority of the models painted by the player) will be eligible to compete for the best painted prize. Each player will have one vote which they can cast in favour of their favourite army. The player who receives the most votes will win. In the case of a tie on votes, the first tie breaker will be sportsmanship, and the second battle points. Should there still be a tie, a coin will be flipped. Best painted votes will not add to a players final score.

Composition

There is one thing that has remained constant through all the editions of warhammer I have played; nobody enjoys having their army wiped out by an opposing army that is overwhelming in one phase. Examples of such lists are excessive shooting, massive magic, and tooled combat characters backed up by tough units.I don’t expect that this will change with 8th edition! Therefore please consider the following as strong guidelines to army composition.

Guidelines• Max 1 Lord choice of each type (Fighty/Magic user)• Max 3 Hero choices of each type (Fighty/Magic user)• Max 3 of the same Core choice, unless they are ranked Infantry without

missile weapons• Max 2 of the same Special choice• Max 1 of the same Rare choice

2 for 1 choices count as a single selection for these restrictions.Units that are an upgrade (For example Longbeard Rangers and Wood Elf Scouts) count as a seperate unit.

• Max 4 warmachines. This includes Daemon Engines, Steam Tanks, Hell Cannons, Anvils of doom and other similar models that fire a missile weapon that is significantly more powerful than normal.

• Max 45 models with ranged attacks. This does not include characters or warmachines. Models with shooting attacks with 18” range or less count as half a model.

• Max 3 units (including characters) of flyers, or units with a normal move of 10”+

• Max 3 chariots or units of chariots (including characters mounted on chariots).

• No single unit that costs more than 450 points• No single unit that has more than 50 models• Minimal use of magic items or powers that affect the number of dice

available in the magic phase. Please note that a maximum of 12 Power Dice can be used during a single magic phase.

Page 7: Fields of Blood Fantasy GuardCon 2010 Players packhomepages.xnet.co.nz/~nick.irvine/Fields_of_Blood_2010_Players... · Welcome to Fields of Blood Fantasy ... The advent of Warhammer

Not all of the Warhammer races were created equal, so some of these restrictions apply less to some races. For example, the following things would likely not cause a veto;

• 2 Great Eagles in a High or Wood elf army – these are not particularly strong or effective units.

• 5 Fighty Goblin Heroes – These heroes are not as powerful as the heroes of other races.

• 50 Models with missile weapons, but no wizards – this might be a themed army that represents a band of Empire witch hunters who scorn magic in favour of crossbows.

However, the following examples show breaking the guidelines that are likely to get vetoed;

• 2 level 4 wizard lords – This, in conjunction with one or more hero level wizards, is a magic phase which opponents will find far from enjoyable.

• 50 Models with missile weapons, as well as 3 warmachines. Even though this army has no magic, it's going to pack a significant ranged punch.

• 200 Skaven Slaves – This unit is more than a little ridiculous. Many armies will have a hard time getting any points for the unit by the end of 6 turns.

If you have cleverly constructed an army with which you can win most of your games with little effort, then you’re doing it wrong :)

The TO, along with 2-3 other seasoned warhammer players will be reviewing all submitted lists. We reserve the right to veto any list that we think does not fit the spirit of this event. This may be because it breaks the composition guidelines in one or more ways, or is a particularly effective combination of models that has slipped between the gaps in the guidelines system. Please understand, an army which meets all the suggestions outlined above may still be vetoed.

Players who submit a list which is vetoed will receive a 10pt penalty to their score. Should a player be vetoed multiple times, then the penalty will be cumulative. This is to discourage players from attempting to push the boundaries.

In the sad case that a player and the organiser cannot agree on a suitable army to be submitted, then the player will not be permitted to play and the entry fee will not be refunded.

Sportsmanship

Sportsmanship is an essential part of a tournament, helping to keep games enjoyable. You will score your opponents sportsmanship each round using the following criteria:

1 – My opponent this round made the game less enjoyable than it would normally be, either because of their attitude or because of their playing style (dodgy measuring or dice rolling etc)2 – My opponent this round played in the right spirit and we had an enjoyable game3 – My opponent this round went out of their way to make sure we both had a really enjoyable game. This will be one of my favourite games of the weekend.

Over the course of the 6 games, I would expect that each player might (unfortunately) give 1 opponent a 1 score, 3-4 of their opponents a 2 score (this is the normal score) and 1-2 opponents a 3. Please understand that giving an opponent a 3 score is basically saying ‘I enjoyed playing this person so much I think they should win a prize”.

Your final sportsmanship score will be the sum of the scores from each round. The player with the highest sportsmanship score at the end of the 6 rounds will win the best sportsman award. Should there be a tie, the first tie breaker will be painting, and the second battle points. Should there still be a tie, a coin will be flipped.

Bonus PointsBonus points will be available to players for the following categories:

• Submitting your list on or before the due date – 3pts• Peer judged army balance – 1pt (each round your opponent will be able

to give you a 1pt bonus if they thought that your army was appropriate for the event)

GrudgesGrudge matches are allowed at FOB. If 2 players want to ensure they play each other in the first round, both players should email the TO to say so. Grudges must be organised at least 1 week prior to the event.
