Philadelphia. It’s where you’ll discover a better future.
Here’s a tip for prospective college students: inspiration and success aren’t just found in classrooms.
The truth is, those who get the most out of college are students who spend at least half theirtime off campus. This might mean internships, courses taken at other schools, research at asupercomputer lab or volunteer work at a localgrade school. Or it could mean going to a rock concert, cheering on your favorite pro sports teamor enjoying a sumptuous meal with your friends atan ethnic restaurant. In other words, if you want atop-notch college career, you’d better be locatednear the center of all the action, where the adven-ture never ends and learning doesn’t come to ascreeching halt at the campus gates.
You can get your diploma anywhere. But if you want an education, come toPhiladelphia.
This is a city where something big is happening. You can feel it in the oak-paneled board rooms in the gleaming downtown skyscrapers. It powersthe bustling technology firms in Center City, thetelecommunications center of the region. It’s in the air at the city’s research laboratories, where thenation’s greatest thinkers are exploring subatomicworlds and the edge of the universe. And you canhear it in the crowded clubs on South Street and in the roar of the fans at a Sixers basketball game.
It’s the drive of 250,000 college students who call the region home, who live and learn and play and have become the pulse of one of thecountry’s most exciting and inspiring centers offinance, technology and education.

There are so many
different institutions
of higher learning in
Philadelphia it truly
feels like “one big
campus.”
The feeling is intoxicating.
Philadelphia is plugged into the global economy. There are 162 tech companies and seven “telecom hotels” in the downtown area alone, linked by 832 miles of fiber optic cable, the hub of the transcontinental fiber optic line. The cityis the busiest port on the North Atlantic coast andthere are 450 foreign-owned companies in theregion. And it’s all powered by the region’s thriving knowledge industry. A recent study foundthat 14 of the region’s 24 largest employers wereresearch-intensive.
In short, it’s a city that’s fueled by minds like yours.
The scenery in the city ranges from the shimmer-ing glass towers of the financial district to theRodin statues and bike paths of Fairmount Park, the largest landscaped city park in the US. And it’s in the center of the East Coast’s financial corridor, perfectly situated between Washington,D.C. and New York City.
There are so many different institutions of higherlearning in Philadelphia, it truly feels like “one big campus.” Large research universities and intimate liberal arts colleges. Urban schools andsuburban schools. Everywhere you look, there’s an endless array of guest speakers, special lec-tures, cultural events and sports to choose from.
And it’s a city that’s constantly pushing the envelope. Universities, technology firms and civicleaders are joining forces to turn the region into

“Nanotech Valley,” where microscopic machineswill redefine business, industry and medicine. The birthplace of ENIAC, the world’s first general-purpose computer, is still on the vanguard of digitaltechnology, from fully wireless campus networks to multi-million dollar super computer laboratories.
The city’s finding new ways to power the world, harnessing the energy of the sun and the wind. And local businesses are successfully positioningthemselves in the new landscape of e-commerceand e-finance.
In Philadelphia, you don’t just graduatewith a degree. You graduate with acareer.
Whether you want to make your mark with computer chips or mergers and acquisitions,Philadelphia provides all the tools you’ll ever need.
Here, mixing academics with work experience is not only easy–it’s prettymuch the rule.
Interested in finance or economics? There’s nobetter place to test the waters than Philadelphia. Here, students study in research centers dedicatedto emerging issues like international finance, entrepreneurship and business ethics. They learnthe tools of their trade in simulated boardrooms, during international video conferences and byworking stock floors.
Some hone their skills helping Pennsylvania farmers to market their products to Philadelphia’sfinest restaurants. Others advise the internationallyrenowned Philadelphia Orchestra on financial matters or help prepare Philadelphia’s bid for thesummer Olympics. And it’s not too uncommon for students to turn their research into profitablecompanies before they graduate.

For technology students, Philadelphia is a dream come true.
This is a city where students are helping to designtele-immersion programs that allow people millionsof miles away from each other to interact as if they were in the same room. Projects range fromsolar-powered cars to plug-n-play robotics, fromcryptography for secure e-mails to high-end videogames. Students find their studies take them tothe OMEGA laser in New York State, to theworld’s most powerful collection of telescopes inMauna Kea, Hawaii and for the ride of their lifeaboard NASA’s “vomit comet.” And sincePhiladelphia is ranked #7 in the country for thenumber of patents issued each year, you couldeasily end up launching your own start-up.
Resume Builders.
Accenture. Boeing. Dow Jones. Goldman Sachs.IBM. Merck. Lockheed Martin. Microsoft. PriceWaterhouse Coopers. Vanguard Funds. When itcomes to world-class internship opportunities inPhiladelphia, the list goes on and on.
This is not to say Philadelphia is all work and no play.
In fact, you’ll be hard pressed to find a place brimming with more ways to let loose, chill out, or get the adrenaline pumping than Philly.
Philadelphia boasts seven professional sportsteams, the “Big 5” NCAA basketball rivalry, andsome of the most impassioned fans in the country. It’s home to the largest collegiate regatta in thecountry, the nation’s only professional cycling raceand has twice hosted ESPN’s X Games. In short, the city breeds champions.
There’s always live music to be found at venueslike the Electric Factory, the Khyber and the TinAngel, and clubs like Brasil’s, the Five Spot andShampoo keep you dancing all night long.
