FIDDLER ON THE ROOF JR.
ST. PATRICK CATHOLIC ACADEMY 2019-20
1
Hi Students
As you know, this year’s musical will be FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, JR. Our artistic team is very
excited to get started working on this script which is packed full with beautiful scenes, songs, and
much, much more!
There are numerous speaking, singing and dancing roles etc. This production will allow each cast
and crew member to create a fun and interesting role beginning with the principal characters, to
ensemble members to stage crew. Each and every role is a significant and integral part of the
production. These roles may be challenging but we are confident you will come away with an
uplifted feeling of pride, camaraderie, support, friendships and accomplishment.
The workshop will consist of theater games, stage knowledge, singing, movement, dancing and
role playing. It is planned out so that you can learn the beginnings of mounting a show –
first we get comfortable with each other and moving around a stage.
The sessions will grow so that by the 3rd day, you will
feel confident and ready to journey through Anatevka with Teyve, his family and friends.
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY.
WORKSHOP AND REHEARSAL GUIDELINES:
1. Please wear comfortable clothing.
2. Always be prepared—you will be asked to Read, Sing and Dance during the course of the
workshop and early rehearsal days. This format allows the creative team to get better
acquainted with you and your commitment to Fiddler on the Roof, Jr.
3. Soft shoes such as jazz or ballet shoes are excellent for this type of work. Gym sneakers
would also be appropriate. Please no UGGS or BIG SNEAKERS.
If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected] or ask Miss Dawn.
Thank you for your cooperation and participation. We are looking forward to a fulfilled, spiritual and
loving experience.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
Tevye (TEV-yuh) - the Papa
Tevye is the heart and conscience of Fiddler on the Roof Jr. His stature really comes from his integrity
and zest for life. Tevye is faced with a wide range of conflict, joy and pain that this character feels
throughout the story. This role requires the character to be comfortable speaking directly to the audience.
Tevye does not need to have a great singing voice, but he must have a strong, easily projected voice that
can fill the performance space.
Gender: Male
Vocal range top: E5
Vocal range bottom: B3
Golde (GOAL-duh)– the Mama
Golde is the backbone of the family. She has a rather gruff exterior, but in her heart she is totally
dedicated to her family. Golde must be able to manage Tevye. She runs the household. Golde should be
able to show a softer side when dealing with her children. She does not need to be the greatest singer in
the world but should have a commanding voice.
Gender: Female
Vocal range top: Db5
Vocal range bottom: Bb3
Tzeitel (SCI-tul)
Tzeitel is the oldest daughter of Tevye and Golde. She is the first to challenge the traditions of Anatevka
by pleading with her father to let her marry Motel the tailor, Tzeitel and Motel have been in love since
childhood..
Gender: Female
Vocal range top: C5
Vocal range bottom: B3
Hodel (HUH-dul)
Hodel is a strong, independent middle child. She is outspoken but respectful. Hodel is charmed by the
revolutionary Perchik the moment she meets him, though she may not show it right away. Her dedication
and love is real as she follows him to Siberia. Strong singer is required for Hodel. (Far From the Home I
Love)
Vocal range bottom: Bb3T
Chava (hah-VUH)
Chava is the scholarly daughter who loves to read. Chava falls in love with a Russian Soldier, Fyedka.
This forbidden love tests her father to the very limits and provides the largest conflict in the story. Chava
is an emotionally charged young girl.
Gender: Female
Vocal range top: B4
Vocal range bottom: Bb3

Shprintze (Shprintz-UH) and Bielke (Bee-ELL-kuh)
Shprintze and Bielke are the youngest daughters of Tevye and Golde. They are considerably younger than
the three matchmaker daughters. They have a few lines but are featured in quite a few scenes. They don’t
need to be strong singers or actresses but should be confident onstage.
Gender: Female
Motel (MUH-tul)
Motel is the poor, young tailor who has been in love with Tzeitel since he was a boy.
Motel requires a sensitive and nervous, yet lovable portrayal of the tailor.
Gender: Male
Perchik (PUR-chick)
Perchik is a young student who brings with him radical new ideas that challenge the traditions of the
community. Perchik and Tevye become friends when they meet along the road to town., He is likable,
charming and ultimately becomes a loyal family member.
Gender: Male
Vocal range top: C5
Vocal range bottom: B3
Lazar Wolf (LAY-zar Wulf)
Lazar Wolf is the town butcher and a wealthy, older man. He has made up his mind to marry Tevye’s
oldest daughter, Tzeitel. He is rather distasteful and feisty, which is why Tzeitel is frightened to marry
him. Lazar is one of the featured singers in To Life.
Gender: Male
Vocal range top: D5
Vocal range bottom: C4
Fiddler
The Fiddler must be an actor who can hold the attention of an entire audience with stylized movement,
facial expression and dance. Freedom of movement and expression are the keys to casting this character.
The Fiddler is a silent role, yet an important one, and can easily be played by either a boy or a girl.
Gender: Any
Yente (YENT-uh)
Yente is the middle-aged widow who matches up the young people of the village in hopes that they will
marry. She is a village busybody and knows all the news of the town. This role requires great comedic
timing.
Gender: Female
Constable
The constable is the local sheriff representing the Russian government. The constable is a complex
character, caught between his good nature towards the people of Anatevka and his duty to the non-Jewish
Russian government.
Gender: Male
FIDDLER ON THE ROOF JR.
ST. PATRICK CATHOLIC ACADEMY 2019-20
8
Fyedka (fee-YED-kuh) Fyedka is a strong, young, Russian soldier who falls in love with Chava. This is a great role for a strong, non-singing actor.
Gender: Male
The following are featured Ensemble roles:
Mordcha, Yussel, Avram, the Rabbi and Mendel are smaller roles that add much to the richness of the
community portrayed in Fiddler on the Roof JR.
Mordcha (mord-HAH) is a friendly, interesting innkeeper.
Yussel is a hatter.
Avram (ahv-RAHM) is a bookseller.
Mendel (MEN-dul) is the Rabbi’s son.
The Rabbi is the spiritual center of the community he is an older man.
Gender: Male
The Villagers will portray the people of the village as Papas, Mamas, Sons or Daughters. Also included
in this group are the Guests, Inn Patrons, Motel’s Parents and Motel’s Relations. These are the faces of
Anatevka.
Gender: Any
The Russian Soldiers are under the command of the Constable.

Kitchen of Tevye's house. GOLDE, TZEITEL and HODEL are preparing for the Sabbath. SHPRINTZE
and BIELKE enter from outside, carrying logs.)
SHPRINTZE
Mama, where should we put these?
GOLDE
By the stove! Where is Chava? It’s almost Sabbath.
HODEL
She's in the barn, milking.
GOLDE
Sprintze, bring me more potatoes.
(SHPRINTZE exits as CHAVA enters, carrying a basket,
with a book under her apron.)
Chava, did you finish milking.
CHAVA
Yes, Mama. (CHAVA drops the book)
GOLDE
You were reading again? Why does a girl have to read? Will it get her a better
husband? Here.
(GOLDE hands CHAVA the book. CHAVA exits into the
house. SHPRINTZE enters with a basket of potatoes.)
SHPRINTZE
Mama, Yente's coming.
HODEL
Maybe she's finally found a good match for you, Tzeitel
GOLDE
From your mouth to God's ears.
SHPRINTZE
Mama, can we go out and play?
GOLDE

YENTE & GOLDE SCRIPT PAGE 13
YENTE
Golde darling, where are your daughters? Such diamonds, such jewels. I'll find every
one of them a husband. But you
shouldn't be so picky... Even the worst husband, God forbid, is better than no husband,
God forbid.
GOLDE
Yente. you said you had news
YENTE
Of course, the news - it's about Lazar Wolf, the butcher. Out of the whole town, he's
cast his eye on Tzeitel.
GOLDE
Such a match, for my Tzeitel. But Tevye wants a learned man.
YENTE
Listen to me, Golde. Send Tevye to him. Don't tell him what it's about. Let Lazar
discuss it himself.
GOLDE
Tevye doesn't like Lazar.
YENTE
Lazar will win him over. He's a good man, and I don't have to tell you he's well off.
And you don't have to thank me, Golde, because it gives me satisfaction to make
people happy. So goodbye, Golde, and … you're welcome.

TEVYE MONOLOGUES SCRIPT PAGES Pg1 @ measure 9
TEVYE:
A fiddler on the roof. Sounds crazy, no? But in our little village of Anatevka, you might
say every one of us is a fiddler on the roof, trying to scratch out a pleasant simple tune
without breaking his neck And how do we keep our balance – That I can tell you in a
word -- TRADITION!
Page 2 @ measure 31 thru 45
TEVYE:
Here in Anatevka we have traditions for everything –
how to eat, how to sleep; how to wear clothes....
And because of our traditions, everyone knows who he is and what God expects him to do.
Page 11 @ measure 170
TEVYE:
Tradition. Without our traditions, our lives would be as shaky as.. as a fiddler on the roof!

PERCHIK
Good Sabbath, sir.
TEVYE
(Introducing himself to PERCHIK) Tevye. And Good Sabbath to you, Reb.. .
PERCHIK
Perchik
TEVYE
You're a newcomer here. As Abraham said. ''I am a stranger in a strange land."
PERCHIK
Moses said that.
TEVYE
Forgive me. As King David put it. "l am slow of speech and slow of tongue."
.PERCHIK
That was also Moses.
TEVYE
For a man with a slow tongue, he talked a lot. And where are you from?
PERCHIK
Kiev ... I was a student in the University there.
TEVYE
So what's the news from the outside world?
PERCHIK
Terrible .
TEVYE
How terrible?
PERCHIK
In a village called Rajanka, all the Jews were evicted, forced to leave their homes...
TEVYE
For what reason?
PERCHIK
Maybe the Tsar wanted their land... maybe a plague..

(TEVYE notice that PERCHIK is eyeing the cheese hungrily.)
TEVYE
Here, have a piece.
PERCHIK
Thank you, but I have no money.
TEVYE
It’s a blessing for me to give. It’s no crime to be poor.
PERCHIK
It's the rich who are the criminals. Some day their wealth will be ours.
TEVVE
That would be nice. If they would agree, I would agree. But until that golden day comes, Reb
Perchik, how will you live?
PERCHIK
By giving lessons. Do you have children?
TEVYE
Five daughters).
PERCHIK
Five?
TEVYE
Daughters.
PERCHIK
Girls should learn too. Girls are people.
TEVYE
A radical!
PERCHIK
I would be willing to teach them. Open their minds to great thoughts.
TEVYE
I am a very poor man. Food for lessons? (PERCHIK nods.)
Good. Stay with us for the Sabbath.
PERCHIK
Good Sabbath, Reb Tevye

Well you have a few more without her.
TEVYE
I see! Today you want one. Tomorrow vou mav want two.
LAZAR WOLF

Two? What would I do with two?
TEVYE

LAZAR WOLF

TEVYE
My daughter, Tzeitel?
LAZAR WOLF
I see her in my butcher shop every Thursday. She's made a good impression on me. I like her. And I would

HODEL
Yes. But he was not talking to you personally... Good day.
PERCHIK
You have spirit. Even a little intelligence perhaps.
HODEL
Thank you.

The Papa, the Papa! Tradition.

2. MATCHMAKER Measure 3-70 ALL FEMALES
Matchmaker, Matchmaker,
Make me a match,
Find me a find,
catch me a catch
Matchmaker, Matchmaker
Look through your book,
And make me a perfect match
Matchmaker, Matchmaker,
I'll bring the veil,
You bring the groom,
Slender and pale.
Bring me a ring for I'm longing to be,
The envy of all I see.
For Papa make him a scholar,
For mama, make him rich as a king
For me well, I wouldn’t holler if he were as
Handsome as anything.
Matchmaker, Matchmaker,
Make me a match,
Find me a find, catch me a catch.
Night after night in the dark I’m alone,
So fine me a match of my own.
3. IF I WERE A RICH MAN! @ measure 3
If I were a Rich Man,
Daidle deedle daidle dig guh dig-guh deedle
daidle dum,
All day longI’d biddy biddy bum,
If I were a wealthy man.
Wouldn’t have to work hard,
Daidle deedle daidle dig guh dig-guh deedle
daidle dum,
If I were a biddy-biddy rich,
dig guh dig-guh deedle daidle man.
I'd build a big tall house with rooms by the
dozen
Right in the middle of the town,
A fine tin roof with real wooden floors below.
There would be one long staircase just going up
And one even longer coming down,
And one more leading nowhere, just for show.
If I were a rich man,
Daidle deedle daidle dig guh dig-guh deedle
daidle dum,
All day long I'd biddy-biddy-bum
If I were a wealthy man.
Wouldn’t have to work hard,
Daidle deedle daidle dig guh dig-guh deedle
daidle dum,
If I were a biddy-biddy rich,
dig guh dig-guh deedle daidle man.
I wouldn't have to work hard,
Daidle deedle daidle
Daidle daidle deedle daidle dumb
If I were a biddy-biddy rich,
Daidle deedle daidle daidle man.
If I were rich, I'd have the time that I lack
To sit in the synagogue and pray,
And maybe have a seat by the Eastern wall,
And I'd discuss the learned books with the holy
men
Seven hours every day
That would be the sweetest thing of all
Oy!
If I were a rich man,
Daidle deedle daidle dig guh dig-guh deedle
daidle dum,
All day long I'd biddy-biddy-bum
If I were a wealthy man.
I wouldn't have to work hard,
Daidle deedle daidle dig guh dig-guh deedle
daidle dum,
Lord who made the lion and the lamb,
You decreed I should be what I am

Something to drink about
