    Fiction v. Nonfiction

Texts are commonly classified as fiction or nonfiction. The distinction addresses whether a text discussesthe world of the imagination (fiction) or the real world (nonfiction).

FictionBooks that are made up by the author, or are not true, are fictionFiction is a prose narrative about imaginary persons and events. The two basic forms of fiction arethe novel and the short story. The word "fiction" is derived from the Latin fictum, meaning invented. Fiction, therefore, is distinguished from nonfiction by beingimaginative. In this general sense fiction also can be thought of as includingnarrative poetry and drama.

Fiction is probably the most popular literary form of modern times, and there arenovels and short stories to suit every taste. Writers of fiction may draw theirmaterials from history or legend, contemporary society, their own lives, orfantasy. The main purpose of most writers of fiction is to entertain. The bestfiction, however, also stimulates the intellect. It communicates the author's viewof life and thus gives the reader new insight into people, society, or nature.

Fiction is a work of the imagination or invention, which contrasts with non-fiction (which is usuallythought to be based on facts). Written works like novels, short stories, plays, and poems are fictional.

FantacyFantasy is one of the many genres of fiction which include Mystery, Westerns, Mainstream, Romantic, ScienceFiction, and so on. It is one of the oldest genres, going back at least to Hellenistic Greece. Most fantasy comesfrom the mythology of this and other ancient civilizations. Some of the first Fantasy stories are Gilgameshfrom Babylon, the Iliad and Odyssey by Homer of Greece and the Aeneid by Virgil from the Roman Empire. The common patterns in these stories of quests, heroes, magic, gods, mythical creatures and adventure formthe basis of the genre today.

Fiction is the main category of books that can be broken down into separate genres. Most people can agreethat all Fiction is fantasy since all Fiction is made up stories about unreal characters. Fantasy is a commercialand literary genre of Fiction with its own themes and elements. It is a genre as old as civilization. Fiction hasrealistic plots and characters while Fantasy deals with the impossible.

Fantasy is a genre that has magic, secondary worlds, mythical creatures, quests, and great battles betweengood and evil in most of the books. Common elements in the genre are dragons, wizards, elves, trolls andother imaginary characters. Some books have minimal fantastic elements, but anything that is not possible inthe real world is considered Fantasy.

The most common themes unique to fantasy are:

Quests, both internal and external.Quests help the characters to grow as they strive for an object or ideal.

Struggles between good and evil, light and dark, or law and chaos. The struggles between opposing forces are to achieve or restore balance to the world.

    Coming of age.

Heroism.Themes of heroism and coming of age bring about growth in characters

Reading Fantasy is not about escapism. It doesnt teach magic to people. Fantasy is a genre to gain insightsabout being human or exploring the human soul by taking us out of the real world. In Fantasy, through thethreats of sorrow and failure readers get a fleeting glimpse of joy and discover truths and an underlying reality.

Books that are nonfiction, or true, are about real things, people, events,

and places.Fictionbooks are put on the shelf in alphabetical order by the

    author's last name.

Let's pretend you wrote a book and your last name was Cleary. If

kids liked your book, they would want to read more of them, so by

having your books in the same place it would make finding them a lot

    easier

Nonfiction books are shelved by their subject's category.

For example, if you wanted a book about cars, you would want them

to be in the same area. You wouldn't worry about the author; you

would just want the facts about cars.

If they weren't shelved this way, libraries would be intotal chaos!

Now, if you're having trouble finding your book on the shelf, remember

this rule for how the books are shelved:

    left-to-right, top-to-bottom

That means you start at the left on the top shelf and move to the right

    until the shelf ends.

Then, you go to the next shelf beneath that and do the same, left toright, top to bottom

When you get to the end of the bottom shelf, move up to the top shelf

of the next section, and continue...
