What is FRP Composite Sheet Piling?
FRP composite sheet piling has been specially
designed as an alternative to conventional steel
sheet piling. Composite sheet piling does not
degrade over time, making it a more environmentally sensitive
solution and, with a longer lifespan than conventional materials, can present
a huge opportunity to make project cost savings.
Used over the last decade in thousands of commercial and private projects,
composite sheet pilings are the strongest and most durable synthetic piling
products in the world. Affording reasonable upfront material costs, lower
maintenance upon installation, and a longer life-span than alternative materials,
composite sheet pilings offer an environmentally sensitive solution with no compromise.
With a high strength to low weight ratio, composite sheet piling provides easier handling
and more economical shipping giving a pricing advantage over conventional steel
sheet barrier methods.
Our FRP composite sheet piling is manufactured by Creative Pultrusions Inc. using the
latest pultrusion technologies. Glass reinforcements, in the form of roving and mats, are
pulled into the heated pultrusion die in a continuous process. Resin is injected under
high pressure to saturate the fibers, and cured in a process known as polymerization.
The pultruded profiles leave the die in a solid state. The hardened result has incredible
strength.
Composite Sheet Piling Performance Properties
Composite sheet piling solutions are often used in projects where other
material options have failed, as the benefits of composite sheet piling
in vertical barrier applications are numerous;
FRP is a non-corrosive, environmentally sensitive material
Life-expectancy exceeds most other containment systems
Strong, durable and abrasion resistant
High strength to low weight ratio
Structural integrity similar to steel allowing for tie-back systems
Thermally and electrically non-conductive
Resistant to UV degradation
Compatible with abnormal pH levels, and resistant to non-aqueous
phase liquids and other corrosive chemicals
Wolf Series FRP composite sheet piling can be used in most applications, including in-situ cut-off and containment
walls and water control systems.
Typical Wall Applications
The Wolf Series FRP composite sheet piling has
been specially designed as an alternative to
conventional steel sheet piling. Without many
of the performance disadvantages of
conventional materials, FRP composite will not
corrode of decay, thereby reducing
maintenance costs and future replacements.
Easier than vinyl to install in challenging soil
conditions, typical applications include;
Acid rock drainage mining sites
Industrial sites
Landfill leachate containment walls
Internal barriers and wing walls for hydro
dams
Dike extension walls
Seepage barriers
Funnel and gate PRB systems
In-situ cut-off walls
Designing with Composite Sheet Piling
A sheet piling wall, known as a vertical barrier, is a row of interlocking, vertical pile
sheets, sealed at the joints, and driven to form a wall.
Composite sheet piling is an engineered product and should be designed with as such.
The vertical barrier must be designed and constructed to withstand the relevant loads,
forces, and environmental influences present in the design.
Important items to note concerning the design of composite sheet piling vertical
barriers are:
Deflection – composite sheet piling can withstand extreme amounts of stress and
deflection before a loss of strength occurs. As with all sheet pile materials, lateral
buckling is a condition of the unsupported length of the sheeting and must be
considered when designing the vertical barrier. Ties backs and additional wales can
be used with composite sheet piling.
Joint strength –the weakest point of any sheet pile is the joint interconnections. Our
composite sheet piles have been designed to achieve the ultimate strength at the
interconnection point, to limit any disconnection under normal driving conditions.
Materials – all components must be made of materials designed to withstand the
conditions expected. Soil geometry characteristics, surcharge loads and
environmental conditions are the primary factors in estimating material requirements. If
any one component is overlooked, the system can fail.
Permeability - FRP composite sheet pile wall solutions can be designed with sealants
added to the interconnections of the profiles to provide permeability rates higher than
that achievable with steel sheet or slurry systems.
Installation –similar to driving other material sheet piles, vibratory hammers, either
excavator or crane mounted, are the ideal tool for driving composite sheet piling.
Mandrel installation equipment can be used to assist the installation of composite sheet
piling vertical barriers.
Cutting – although furnished cut to the specified length, properly clamped and rigid
composite sheet piles can be cut quickly and accurately using a circular saw with a
carbide or diamond edged blade.
Safety – as with all engineered products, factors of safety should be considered during
handling and installation.
