Xerxes Fiberglass Aboveground Products

Since the 1960s, employees at the Xerxes Aboveground Prod-ucts (AGP) Division in Anaheim, California, have designedand manufactured corrosion-resistant, fiberglass productsaimed at protecting the environment. In the early 1960s,Century Fiberglass, a precursor of the Xerxes AbovegroundProducts Division, played a key role when the fiberglass in-dustry addressed corrosion-related issues of abovegroundchemical storage tanks.

Both at its Anaheim location and its other strategicallylocated facilities, Xerxes Corporation has a reputation as anindustry leader, in part because the company constantly ex-amines the needs of the marketplace in order to provide in-novative solutions to customers’ ever-changing needs. Ascommunities, industries and regulating bodies solve their liq-uid storage needs while protecting the environment, Xerxes isthere with products that meet those needs. Today, Xerxesaboveground fiberglass products include storage and processtanks, piping, ductwork and custom-fabricated equipment,as well as a full line of accessories and fittings.

Customers choose Xerxes aboveground products becausethey are engineered and manufactured to be long-lasting, cor-rosion-resistant, durable, cost-effective solutions for a wide

variety of aboveground storage and production applications.Customers also choose Xerxes fiberglass products because, un-like polyethylene products, they easily lend themselves to awide variety of fitting configurations. And, unlike steel above-ground products, they are easy to ship and easy to install be-cause they are lightweight yet structurally strong. A furtheradvantage of choosing a Xerxes tank is that Xerxes offers fieldservice, including field installation of additional tank acces-sories after tank installation.

Xerxes Anaheim is RTP-1 accreditedXerxes’ Anaheim facility has been an American Society ofMechanical Engineers (ASME) RTP-1 accredited manufac-turer since 1997. This ASME Reinforced Thermoset Plasticaccreditation, the most stringent fiberglass-tank specificationfor manufacturers, is held by only a select number of compa-nies in the world. The Xerxes Aboveground Products Divi-sion is one of a handful of U.S. companies that continue tomeet the stringent and evolving RTP-1 standards by success-fully passing the shop qualifications, surveys and annual au-dits necessary for accreditation.

Fiberglass aboveground tanks – a long-term storage solution

Xerxes Corporation has long been a leader in the design andmanufacture of high-quality, cost-effective fiberglass productsthat help protect the fragile relationship between humans andtheir environment. Xerxes Corporation manufactures bothaboveground and underground storage tanks. Headquarteredin Minneapolis, Minnesota, Xerxes operates several manu-facturing facilities strategically located to provide prompt de-livery and quality service, both economically and efficiently. The Xerxes Aboveground Product Division is located atXerxes’ Anaheim, California, facility.

For decades, Xerxes has been well-known as a major tanksupplier to the petroleum industry, with more than 150,000underground tanks installed. Many of the world’s largest oilcompanies rely on Xerxes to supply environmentally safe un-derground tanks for storage of gasoline at their retail servicestations. Throughout the neighborhoods and communities ofAmerica, Xerxes underground products are in place, simulta-neously storing liquids and protecting the environment.

More recently, Xerxes has become a major supplier of un-derground storage tanks for water and wastewater applica-tions. This product line includes septic, recirculation, dosing, holding, leachate and chemical tanks, as well as tanks de-signed for potable water, fire-protection water, irrigationwater, stormwater and emergency-supply water.

All the while, Xerxes has also been a major supplier offiberglass aboveground tanks to a variety of companies andmunicipalities throughout the western United States. Everytime a Xerxes fiberglass tank – whether aboveground or un-derground – is delivered to a customer, the same performancestandard has been met – a vessel for safe storage and carefulprotection of the environment.

Ourcommitment to customer satisfaction and quality productsmakes Xerxes an excellent choice in both aboveground andunderground storage – for today and tomorrow.

3

Aboveground fiberglass tanksXerxes aboveground fiberglass vessels and piping are widelyused by municipalities and manufacturers because of theirability to handle corrosive chemicals. For instance, wastewatertreatment facilities use aboveground fiberglass storage tanksand piping because they safely contain and transport harshchemicals such as sodium hypochlorite (bleach), alum andferric chloride. In addition, aboveground fiberglass corrosion-resistant stacks are used to ventilate wastewater treatment fa-cilities.

On the other end of the spectrum, food manufacturersfavor fiberglass products because they keep their products freefrom contamination. Applications of aboveground fiberglasstanks, piping and equipment include the storage of such di-verse items as bleach, food, chemicals and brine, as well as thecollection of refinery spills.

Aboveground fiberglass pipingXerxes also manufactures a full line of custom fiberglass pip-ing and pipe fittings. Pipe ends are available with plain-end,bell-guide and flanged connections. Xerxes specializes insmall-diameter to mid-diameter piping applications, up to 60inches in diameter. Xerxes also offers factory spooling togreatly reduce field-assembly costs.

The piping is complemented by a full line of lightweight,easy-to-install, filament-wound and hand-lay-up fittings, in-cluding elbows, tees, crosses, flanges and reducers. Piping 3 to12 inches in diameter is rated at 150 psi. Piping 14 inches indiameter and larger is available in pressure ratings of 50, 100and 150 psi. The dimensions for bolt circles and bolt-hole sizesmeet ANSI B16.1 requirements.

Custom fabricationWhile Xerxes offers a full line of standard tank and pipe sizes,it also is able to fabricate a wide range of engineered fiberglassstructural products to meet specific customer requirements.

Examples of this custom fabrication are contact-moldedtanks, piping, ductwork, free-standing exhaust stacks, air-stripping towers, scrubbers, precision-built transportationcases, wastewater holding tanks, food-processing tanks andbrine makers.

Xerxes Aboveground Products Division uses premium mate-rials to manufacture its tanks, piping and accessories. Xerxesfiberglass products are manufactured of high-quality resinsand glass, resulting in durable laminated products. Other ben-efits of fiberglass are that it is inherently corrosion-resistantand essentially maintenance-free.

Also, compared to other options in aboveground tanks –such as steel, stainless steel or concrete – fiberglass offers cus-tomers a cost-effective and easy-to-ship alternative. For ex-ample, an aboveground fiberglass tank weighs about one-thirdof what a steel tank of equal capacity weighs, yet, as a com-posite, the material of construction is three to six timesstronger than steel on a pound-for-pound basis. As a pro-tection against ultraviolet-ray degradation, the exterior of allXerxes aboveground tanks have either a resin-based, clear-waxcoating or gel coat that can be tinted according to customerpreference.

Xerxes aboveground tanks are designed to meet load condi-tions specified by customers, which can include buildingcodes such as the Uniform Building Code, the InternationalBuilding Code and local codes. The analysis performed forthese prescribed loads is based on finite-element models, asgenerated for specific tank and vessel geometries and operat-ing conditions. The computer-generated, finite-element mod-els provide a realistic and accurate analysis of the vessels andtanks, thus allowing for optimum design of the various tankelements – such as wall thickness, material selection and an-choring systems.

Through the use of different glass fabrics and glass rov-ing, each tank or vessel laminates are optimized to satisfy notonly the building codes, but also various fiberglass specifica-tions, such as those prescribed by ASME RTP-1 and ASTM(American Society for Testing and Materials).

Technology to fit the changing needs of the marketplace

5

The majority of Xerxes aboveground tanks are filament-wound. A typical Xerxes filament-wound tank has at leastfour layers. First, the inner surface of the tank is 20 mils thick, with a 90 percent, resin-rich surface reinforced with either aglass or synthetic veil. The second layer is a resin-rich, ran-dom-oriented, chopped-strand glass layer no less than 80 milsthick. This layer has an approximately 65 percent resin con-tent and 35 percent glass content. Together, these first twolayers create a 100-mil corrosion barrier. The resin for thisbarrier is determined by the specific liquid being stored andthat liquid’s required temperature limits.

The third layer involves the process of filament winding.Resin-impregnated, continuous strands of fiberglass are ap-plied to a rotating mandrel. The filaments are applied at ap-proximately 70 degrees to the tank’s longitudinal axis. Thisfilament-wound layer is approximately 70 percent glass and30 percent resin. The final layer of each tank is either a 10-mil, resin-based, pigmented or clear gel coat that protects thetank from ultraviolet-ray degradation.

In some applications, additional or adjusted layers are re-quired to meet specific site or usage requirements. For instance, continuous filaments of resin-impregnated glass can be appliedat a 90-degree angle to the tank’s longitudinal axis (rather thanthe earlier described 70-degree angle). This provides hoopstrength and allows tapering of the tank-wall thickness in dis-

creet steps. When tanks need to be designed andmanufacturedto protect against wind and earthquake conditions, unidirec-tional layers, comprised of resin-impregnated glass fibers, areapplied along the longitudinal axis of the tank to provide ad-ditional reinforcements against buckling due to seismic or otherloads. A tank can also be insulated with foam and covered witha fiberglass jacket.

Filament-wound layers for structural strength

Xerxes standard nonseismic tanksAll Xerxes aboveground standard filament-wound tanks aredesigned to meet ASTM D 3299, Type I, Grade 2 require-ments for hydrostatic loads with a specific gravity of 1.2(maximum hoop strain of .0010 in./in.). Tanks are designedfor 100 mph windload when anchored. Tank tops are de-signed for a 250-pound manload and/or for snow at25lbs./sq.ft. In terms of pressure and vacuum, tanks are de-signed for service at atmospheric pressure; however, a slightinternal pressure (to 0.5 psi) is allowed as long as the tank ispositively vented and properly anchored.

Tanks designed for seismic conditionsXerxes aboveground tanks can also be designed for seismiczones 1, 2A, 2B, 3 and 4, as well as various specific gravitiesand pressures up to 15 psi. All seismic tanks are designed ac-cording to the latest applicable building codes and RTP-1,ASTM D 3299 and/or according to other customer require-ments or specifications.

Hoop and axial stresses and strains due to hydrostaticand seismic loads are computed by means of a finite-elementcomputer program. The filament winding primarily providesthe required hoop strength. Since seismic loads also producelarge axial stresses, each Xerxes seismic filament-wound tankincludes a special lug design appropriate for the size of thetank. Xerxes seismic tanks exceed the applicable design re-quirements of American Petroleum Institute API 650 (Tanksfor Oil Storage).

BelowXerxes manufactures a wide varietyof aboveground piping and duct-work. Shown here are examples ofcustom piping with a clear coating.

Typical accessories for Xerxes aboveground fiberglass tanksXerxes designs and manufactures a complete line of acces-sories and fittings to equip tanks for a variety of applicationsand to meet the building codes in any geographical area.Mounting brackets and other structural accommodations canbe factory-fitted to facilitate field installation of special ac-cessories, such as a variety of float-gauge systems, internal pip-ing or electronic sensors.

All tanks must have a vent, and manways are requiredfor horizontal and closed-top vertical tanks to allow internalbonding of dome ends and tops. Unless otherwise specified,a Xerxes aboveground tank carries a label showing date ofmanufacture, capacity, resin system, inner-liner data, tem-perature limits and serial number.

Customer-specified items, such as logos, may generallybe added to tank exteriors. See page 11 for placement of fre-quently ordered accessories.

9

ManwaysStandard side and topmanways are availablein both 20-inch and24-inch diameters.Larger-diameter man-ways are also available. Manways are designed to meet all re-quirements of ASTM D 3299, ASTM D 4097 or ASMERTP-1. Cadmium-plated bolts, nuts and washers, and flat-faced neoprene gaskets are standard on manways. Stainless-steel hardware is available for an additional charge. Manwaysare required for horizontal and closed-top vertical tanks toallow internal bonding of dome ends and tops.

Hinged manwaysHinged manwaysoffer quick and easyaccess to tank inte-riors through thetank top. Thehinged manway does not offer an airtight or watertight seal. However, when seated and locked down, this manway pre-vents rainwater and contaminants from entering the tank.

Mounting bracketsThe mountingbrackets providethe necessary re-straint for both in-ternal and externalaccessories, such aspiping and instru-mentation. Unless otherwise specified, they are fiberglass. Valves, controllers or other heavy items connected to tank nozzles shouldbe independently supported.

Vents (gooseneck and mushroom)All Xerxes aboveground tanks mustbe vented to prevent serious damagefrom the excess pressure or excessvacuum that typically occurs duringloading or offloading of liquids.Xerxes offers two standard ventstyles – the common gooseneck ventand the mushroom vent. Both venttypes are equipped with birdscreens.Minimum vent size should exceedthe size of the largest inlet or outletnozzle.

Flanged nozzlesXerxes supplies bothhand-lay-up and fila-ment-wound flanges.Flanged nozzles areavailable in 1-inchthrough 42-inch in-ternal diameters. When required, noz-zles can be strengthened by either plate or conical gussets. AllXerxes flanges meet ASTM D 3299, ASTM D 4097, ASMERTP-1 or NBS PS 15-69 standards, as specified. Flange dimen-sions (except thickness) and bolting correspond to ANSI B16.1.Mating flanges must be flat-faced using a full-face gasket. Xerxescan also manufacture custom flanges.

LaddersFor access to tank tops, ladders are available in fiberglass, alu-minum or carbon steel. All ladders are factory-fitted to the tankbut disassembled for shipment and subsequent field installationby others. Ladders that are 20-feet high and higher must be or-dered with safety cages. Safety cages can also be ordered forshorter ladders. (See page 11 for ladder illustration.)

Lifting lugsUnless otherwise specified, all tanks areequipped with two opposing galvanized-steel lifting lugs. Fiberglass lifting lugs areavailable for certain sizes of tanks. Sometie-down lugs can be used as lifting lugswhen unloading the tank.

Tie-down lugsXerxes offers six different designs of gal-vanized steel tie-down lugs. These lugsare incorporated into the design for eachvessel to fit the vessel’s specific require-ments, whether it be for seismic, non-seismic and/or wind-load conditions. These lugs are usually filament-woundonto the outside of the completed tankwall. Lugs are also available in fiberglassand special metals.

DrainsXerxes suppliesseveral differ-ent styles ofdrain fittings. The two mostpopular stylesare the siphondrain (which isinstalled in thesidewall of thevessel and hasinternal pipingthat terminatesclose to the in-side bottom of the tank) and the full drain (which is installedwith the centerline level with the tank bottom). Full drain noz-zles are equipped with three plate gussets and require a notch inthe foundation. Other drain styles include the side bottom drain, side shell drain, bottom drain and bottom elbow drain.

BafflesFiberglass baffle as-semblies can be in-stalled inside thetank to promotemixing. Baffles areavailable in bothcustom designs anda standard stand-off baffle configura-tion, with standardwidths of 1/12 thetank diameter.

Work platforms and catwalksWork platformsand catwalksthat connect twoor more tanksprovide access totank tops (andmeet currentOSHA specifica-tions). They areavailable in fiber-glass, aluminumor carbon steel. These accessoriesare shop-fit to thetank but disassembled for shipment and subsequent field instal-lation by others.

HandrailsHandrails areavailable in fiber-glass, aluminumor carbon steel. They are shop-fitto the tank butdisassembled forshipment andfield installationby others.

Heating and insulation

Self-regulating heater cable, designed for each application, is at-tached to the tank with aluminum tape. The heating cable dis-tributes the heat to hold liquids to desired temperatureminimums. Along with the heating unit, insulation conservesenergy and provides temperature stability. Heating tape is ap-plied to the tank’s external wall (typically on the lower quarter).Agitators or some type of liquid recirculation may be required toachieve temperature requirements, depending on the applica-tion and environment.
