The Fairfield Ledger — Page 5 — Tuesday, June 7, 2016 FHS seniors earn scholarships, awards O ver 80 different scholarships, val- ued at a total of more than $160,000, were awarded to Fairfield High School students dur- ing the Senior Scholarship Program May 17 in the FHS Auditorium. These scholarships are adminis- tered or sponsored by the Greater Jefferson County Foundation and many local businesses, service organizations, individuals and fami- lies. Scholarships awarded for the first time this year included those from Pilot Grove Savings Bank, the Shelter Insurance Foundation, Washington State Bank and Access Energy Cooperative. The awards varied in value from $250 to $5,000 and were given as either one time amounts or as renewable scholarships. Many were open to any student, without regard to the applicant’s intended field of study, while others are for students who intend to pursue careers in a medical field, business, teaching, fine arts, engineering, mathematics or vocational or agri- culture related fields. The criteria for applying also varied and includ- ed, but weren’t limited to, academ- ic record, community service, par- ticipation in activities and financial need. Some of the awards honoring stu- dents have no monetary value, such as the Bernie Saggau Award. The annual award honors Saggau, the executive director of the Iowa High School Athletic Association. One student is presented with the award at each high school, chosen by a vote by school faculty members. The recipient is selected based on honesty, citizenship, sportsmanship and all-around student abilities. While some scholarships are given based on merit or academics, others are given based on need or specific fields of study, such as nursing or agriculture. The scholarships and awards bestowed upon students at the cere- mony do not include scholarships from individual learning institu- tions. FHS seniors, faculty and admin- istrators extend their thanks to the local scholarship sponsors and pre- senters whose contributions of time and money made these awards pos- sible. This annual local scholarship program is one of the strongest in Iowa, and demonstrates the com- munity’s dedication to its young people. 2016 FHS Scholarship, Award Recipients Governor’s Scholar Recognition: Loreena Hucke. The scholarship awards are given annually to graduating seniors who will be or who are study- ing in a mathematics-related field at the college of their choice. The award is intended to influ- ence the recipients toward a successful career. Katherine Mueller is the daughter of Lori and Andrew Mueller.
