    Friday Harbor Elementary Newsletter

    Eagle Sightings October 2011

Dear Families,The days since school began have been daily reminders of the exuberance, fascination, and generosity of the Friday

Harbor Community. I have felt very warmly welcomed by the Friday Harbor Community. I appreciate that so many oyou have taken the time to volunteer in our school, join your child for lunch and attend the Open House and Back toSchool Nights thank you! Look to our upcoming events section for fun and exciting events coming your way in themonth of October.

We look forward to continuing to see our community members come through our doors. A new school yearbrings an opportunity to begin again and to work towards goals and steps to help our children continue to learn athigh levels. I could not be more proud of what I have seen so far. As I get to know the staff, students, and families, Icannot think of anything else I would rather do. I truly believe I have the best job in the world!

How are we doing?Last month we received scores for our state testing that was administered last spring Im glad to report that Friday

Harbors students have continued to achieve at high levels. The MSP (Measure of Student Progress) is one indicator ofhow we are doing in our work to support students in meeting the academic goals set by the state in reading, writing, math and science. Our staff is currently looking at this data, along with others, and targeting steps to improve theperformance of our students even more. From the first day to the last day of the school year, FHES teachers work todetermine the needs of each child and to help him or her to not only meet the state performance guidelines but toexceed those expectations. Go to the following link to see more specifically how FHES did on the 2010-2011Measurement of StudentProgress.

As partners in this important work we count on families to help ensure that all students come to school ready tolearn. One important way you can help your children to be successful is by having them at school on time every day;this is a significant indicator of student achievement. School begins promptly at 8:20. Please make sure your child ishere before the first bell rings at 8:15. If your child is ill please call the office at 378-5209 ext. 1 to let us know thereason for the absence. Attendance is essential, and when children miss school or are commonly late, they fall behindmaking it difficult for teachers to catch students up on lessons missed.

I appreciate the partnership we have with our families and our community; together we can make a difference in thlives of all children.

    Heres to good learning~ Connie

From the Health Room: Keeping our Kids Healthy day by day

Those Little Buggers are back! We have had approximately 30 cases of lice so far at FHES. Parentsand staff agreewe need to hit those buggers hard and knock them out!

FHES has a NO NIT POLICY for the 2011/2012 school year. Nits found on any student or staff will result in exclusion

from school until free of any nits.

Prevention is the key! Parents/guardians are asked to screen for lice regularly and to treat head lice on their child

immediately. If parents find nits/lice on their childs head, the child should stay home from school until he or she is

    free of lice or nits.

Parents are advised to screen for lice before situations that could expose children to lice, like sleepovers. Information

about lice control is available at the school and at the health department (HD).

We want to thank the PTA Lice Patrolfor all the time theyve provided to check heads. Only trained staff and

volunteers are allowed to examine students for head lice in school. We are working hard at checking in an organized

fashion as to not impact the learning environment, but it can still be impactful.

If school staff suspects nits/lice, they will report all suspected cases of head lice to the office to be checked. If lice or

nits are found office staff will contact parents/guardians to pick up their child. The child will wait in the office until

the parent/guardian arrives to the child home.

The school nurse can provide training to staff/volunteers regarding how to recognize nits and/or lice.

Remember, ANYONE can get lice; they are not a public health problem, but they are impacting our learning

environment and possibly your childs education lets all be pro-active and get rid them now so hopefully they do

    not return.

STAY HEALTHY DURING FLU SEASON? YES WE CAN!

Free Flu Vaccination will be available for your child on Oct. 19th

    from 1-3pm at FHES.

    FLU

Here for some reminders about how to stay well and to minimize problems if you or your child should come in

    contact with the Flu:

    1. Cover every cough with an elbow, not the hand

    2. Wash hands regularly

    3. Stay home when ill

    4. Call before going to the doctor if you think that the patient may have influenza

    5. Get appropriate influenza vaccinations for all children and adults

Most cases of influenza-like illness can successfully be treated at home with bed rest, fluids and fever reducing, over

the counter medications. However, you should watch for symptoms that may indicate a more serious illness.

As long as a person has a fever, he or she can infect others. A child should stay at home from school until at least 24

hours after the fever has ended without any fever reducing medications.

The Department of Health nurses are available to answer your Flu questions at 360-378-4474.

For additional information, go to the Department of Health website.

    PERTUSSIS (Whooping Cough)

There has been one case of Pertussis in Friday Harbor. The health department is encouraging anyone with a 7-14

day cough illness to see his or her medical provider for evaluation and testing/treatment if appropriate.

Work, school and child-care restrictions: All cases and symptomatic contacts should be excluded from child-care,

school, and health care settings until 5 days of therapy with an appropriate antibiotic has been completed (i.e., until

    day 6 after starting treatment).

Treated persons can be considered no longer contagious after five days of antibiotics even if they continue to cough

and/or if the course of antibiotic treatment is not yet completed.

Island Recs New STAR Program (Study Time and Afternoon Recreation)Tired of trying to figure out a safe place for your children to spend their afternoons while you are still at work? Want

to pique your child's interest in art, crafts, and love of the outdoors? Looking for ways to enrich your child's academic

and social performance without huge fees?

Though growing, the Island Recreation STAR program at Friday Harbor still has plenty of openings. Registration

information as well as more specifics about the program can be found by contacting Alice Hibberd or Mr. Conrad atIsland Recreation or emailing her at [email protected]

STAR is licensed with WAs Department of Early Learning, providing a variety of enriching experiences for children in

grades K-6. In addition to our study time, daily snack and free play, kids learn important life skills through organized

games, art projects, nature exploration, movement classes, educational events and trips.

STAR is more like Camp Eagle Rock than FHESs former ASK program. Our focus is on health, education and enrichment.

We take walking field trips around town and use Island Recs van to go where our feet cant take us. Weve already had

a nature hike and picnic at American Camp, made field journals, played tennis at Cahail Public Park, learned Frisbee skills

and beach art at Jacksons Beach and tried our first yoga class at XYZ Movement Arts. Future events such as nature

studies with FH Labs & Wolf Hollow, swimming at SJI Fitness, hiking at English Camp, art tours with IMA and more are in

    the works.

Looking for fun things to do??Look no further.

Island Recreation has what youre looking for!!
