Purpose of Graphic Standards Fraser Health’s visual identity is an important part of its image, which projects the organization’s face and voice to diverse audiences through a wide variety of media. Using a consistent visual identity is the primary means organizations have to clarify authorship.

Trademarks such as the Fraser Heart are valuable properties. It is in the best interests of all Fraser Health stakeholders to respect and follow these graphic standards.

A key purpose of graphic standards and visual identity usage rules is to protect the integrity of trademarks and what they represent. Following these guidelines will promote recognition and consistency. Regulating the use of the visual identity will also help to defend it against trademark infringement.

These graphic standards are primarily concerned with the Fraser Health visual identity, colours and use of typography. They are not intended to restrict the creativity of graphics professionals in designing a wide range of materials. Rather, the guidelines are meant to ensure that the visual identity is used consistently and correctly, and that every visual communication representing Fraser Health displays clear authorship to help promote public recognition of, and trust in, the health authority that serves the public’s needs.

Trademarks, Copyrights and Licensing These graphic standards have been developed for the exclusive use of the Fraser Health Authority and its suppliers or licensees – such as designers, printers, manufacturers and media – authorized by Fraser Health to apply the trademarks to materials.

The trademarks, graphics and other creative products in these fi les are original work, and have not been intentionally copied from any other existing work. Any similarities between these creative products and any other works are coincidental. Typography incorporated into the signatures was created using copyrighted fonts under non-exclusive license. Identity elements contained in these Graphic Standards including the Fraser Heart symbol and the Fraser Health wordmark, are trademarks of the Fraser Health Authority, and are protected under the Trademark Act.

Reproduction of these elements is prohibited, except by license or express permission of the Fraser Health Authority and in accordance with guidelines and graphic standards issued by the Fraser Health Authority.

Use and licensing of Fraser Health Authority trademarks is regulated by the Communications and Public Affairs Department, which also publishes, maintains and advises on graphic standards. For more information about the commercial use of trademarks under license and on graphic standards, please call Communications and Public Affairs at (604) 587-4622.

Quick tipsWhen to use acronyms:

• Avoid acronyms except after the fi rst reference. For example, Emergency Department (ED). Second reference is ED.

• Use FH as the acronym for Fraser Health.

Inclusive Language:

• Instead of the word staff, use employees, physicians and volunteers.

• Instead of the word patients, use patients, residents and clients.

Email SignatureAn email signature makes it easy for people to reach you. Here is a suggestion on what to include:

Protocol on representing yourself as a Fraser Health employeeIf as an employee you are advocating a personally held position which has not been endorsed by Fraser Health, please use plain letterhead (not the Fraser Health letterhead), and do not use your title nor indicate Fraser Health in any way since that might be seen to indicate you are speaking on behalf of Fraser Health.

Government Communications ProtocolAll capital, policy and program announcements and events are subject to the approval of the Minister of Health or his/her designate.

This includes, but is not restricted to, ground breakings, opening of facilities, and funding announcements.

• If the Minister is unable to attend, the announcement opportunity will be offered to an MLA designated by the Minister.

• Fraser Health will provide regular updates of upcoming events to the Public Affairs Bureau (Ministry of Health) which will review the information and proposed dates with the Minister’s Offi ce to ensure the proposed dates correspond with the government’s corporate calendar and the Minister’s or designate’s availability.

• Scheduling of events is subject to the Minister’s approval. In planning for important events, enough time needs to be allocated for preparation, including photo opportunities, materials and signage.

The LogoThe Fraser Heart visual identity is a symbol of the entire Fraser Health system, including all facilities and programs. Consistent use of this image for communication and identifi cation purposes helps raise awareness and understanding of the integrated regional health system and the services, facilities and programs the public can access.

The Fraser Heart stands for the organization’s vision of: “Better health, best in health care.” In addition to being an identifi er of Fraser Health facilities and programs, the visual identity clarifi es authorship of all Fraser Health materials. Our goal is to cultivate the visual identity as a well-recognized symbol of valuable and trustworthy information about health matters. This will aid Fraser Health’s efforts in patient education, health promotion and disease prevention.

Colour versions There are three versions of the visual identity: a full-colour version for use in all colour reproduction, a black and white version, and a reverse version where the visual identity appears white on a dark background. The visual identity should not be reproduced in any other colours.

Proper use of the visual identity The visual identity should be used in conjunction with the Fraser Health name as a complete signature (shown on page 4), or with a combination of a facility name and Fraser Health (shown on page 8). The visual identity must never be combined with other logos, names or identities except as prescribed in these graphic standards.

Guidelines

Signatures with Slogan A variety of formats for the standard signatures accompanied by the slogan have been provided to accommodate a range of layout requirements. When the slogan is used, it should not be resized or placed in a different position from the formats shown.

Whether or not one should use the slogan with the signature must be decided on a case-by-case basis. Where room is available to include the whole signature and slogan legibly and the slogan message enhances the communication, it is the preferred option. The slogan should not be used as a tag line with the signature where it will not be legible.

Note: All signature and slogan versions shown here in colour are for illustration purposes. Formatting of black and white signatures is identical.

Standard square signature with slogan These versions are suitable for use in most applications where the standard square signature is appropriate. Ensure that the slogan is legible at the size reproduced.

HORIZONTAL B

SQUARE A

Standard horizontal signature with slogan Since the relative size of the slogan is small compared with the name, these versions are suitable only where the standard horizontal signature is large enough to ensure the legibility of the slogan.

Standard Signatures All applications of the visual identity should include one of these standard signatures. Three standard versions of the Fraser Health signature have been designed to accommodate various layout requirements. The relative sizes of the visual identity and the Fraser Health name should not be changed in these standard signatures, and the elements should not be rearranged or altered.

Note: All signature versions shown here in colour are for illustration purposes. Formatting of the black and white signature is identical.

Standard square signature This version is appropriate for most applications including print materials. It is very compact and fi ts in a square space. In this version, the visual identity is large relative to the size of the name, and it is especially suitable when a prominent image is wanted for visual impact.

Standard rectangular signature This version is appropriate for applications where a more horizontal shape or larger name size relative to the visual identity is required. It fi ts in a moderately horizontal space, similar to the shape of a TV screen.

Standard horizontal signature This version is especially appropriate for applications where there is limited room for the visual identity, such as forms. In this version, the name is large relative to the size of the image, and it fi ts in a horizontal banner-shaped space.

Slogan Typically, the Fraser Health slogan will be used as a tag line in conjunction with the visual identity signature (see page 6). In applications where more emphasis on the slogan is desirable, it is permissable to reproduce the slogan wordmark in a larger size as a headline or design element. When used in this manner, the Fraser Health visual identity signature should also always appear in close proximity to ensure clarity of authorship.

When used within the logo, the slogan is a graphic symbol and must follow all logo guidelines. When the slogan is used within text, it is no longer a graphic symbol and does not have to appear exactly as it does within the logo. In this case, all the usual grammar and style conventions apply.

• If the slogan appears in the middle of a sentence, it should not be capitalized, but set apart with long dashes at either end. For example, Fraser Health’s vision - better health, best in health care - guides much of the work we do on behalf of our patients, residents and clients.

• If it appears at the end of a sentence, it can also be set apart with a colon at the beginning and a period at the end. A comma between better health and best in health care is permitted. For example, Fraser Health’s vision is: Better health, best in health care.

Slogan WordmarksThree versions of the Fraser Health Authority slogan — better health, best in health care — have been provided as typographic wordmarks to accommodate various layouts. These wordmarks have been converted from type to a graphic to ensure accurate reproduction.

Note: All slogans shown here in one colour are for illustration purposes. Formatting of the black and white slogan is identical.

Slogan minimum sizeUnder good reproduction conditions, the minimum size for colour and black and white reproduction is shown below. Where reproduction quality is questionable, the minimum size should be increased.

Graphic Standards Fraser Health

Guidelines

Co-branding and Visual Identity Hierarchy The Fraser Health signature is like an “umbrella trademark” that functions as the primary visual identity for a whole family of departments, programs, facilities and campaigns. Also, it may be used as a secondary mark by related organizations, such as foundations, to show their relationship with the Fraser Health facility or program they support.

In no case should the Fraser Heart visual identity ever be used without the name Fraser Health being clearly visible in close proximity, so that the linkage between the visual identity and the name is evident. The Fraser Heart visual identity may not be used by itself as the visual identity for any other entity or appear with any other name, except when used as shown to identify Fraser Health facilities.

When Fraser Health is a sponsor or co-sponsor of any initiative or event, the complete Fraser Health signature should be used to signify participation.

Signage for capital projects will have the Fraser Health logo, as well as the provincial government logo.

Fraser Health co-brands with the Ministry of Health logo, and the ActNow logo for various events or health promotion.

Facility primary identity When a Fraser Health facility is the primary identity, for example on a hospital brochure, or other publication, the facility name should have visual prominence, with the Fraser Heart visual identity and Fraser Health name used as secondary identifi ers to show that the facility is part of the Fraser Health system. Facilities should not exhibit other visual identities, and the Fraser Health supporting typestyle should be used for the facility name.

Home and Community CareHuman Resources

Mental Health and Addictions

Community site signageFraser Health community facilities include public health units, mental health and addictions offi ces, and home and community care offi ces. Some of these offi ces have multiple Fraser Health tenants, so the Fraser Health logo with slogan should have visual prominence. Individual departments, such as Home and Community Care and Mental Health and Addictions, can be listed on the exterior signage or not, depending on the site’s needs.

Community sites sometimes name their services in a variety of ways, but for consistency, all offi ces that want to list Public Health services should call them simply: “Public Health.” If there is room on the sign, and if it’s applicable, you can also add in smaller letters, Prevention and/or Health Protection.

To maximize the sign’s visibility, avoid using words such units, services, and offi ces, when listing the services offered at a location.

Corporate signageSome Fraser Health facilities are neither hospitals nor community sites. They often have a corporate function and serve the entire health authority. The Fraser Health Corporate Offi ce in Surrey is one example. The names of these offi ces should have visual prominence, with the Fraser Heart and Fraser Health name used as secondary identities to show that the facility is part of the Fraser Health system.

Fraser Health interior signage guidelines

Fraser Health serves a diverse population of people from new immigrants with limited English skills to elderly patients with aging eyes to people of any age who may have literacy problems or visual impairments. Signage is one way we communicate with the people we serve. To meet their needs, we suggest all interior signage installed in Fraser Health owned and operated facilities considers the following guidelines:

• Use universal signage symbols instead of words as much as possible, or a combination of symbols and words.

• Treat colours and fonts as language, e.g., colours of signage can indicate specifi c fl oors or zones of a building. Directional signage that doesn’t indicate a fl oor or zone, can have a consistent slate grey background and white type for high contrast. Individual décor and paint may also infl uence the colours a facility chooses to use in its interior signage.

• Use Fraser Health fonts for consistency. For signage, the preferred font is Frutiger, although Tahoma is also acceptable if Frutiger is not available.

This is Tahoma.This is Frutiger.

• Avoid red backgrounds and blue type or red type on a blue background because these colour combinations are diffi cult to see. Ensure there is enough tonal variation between the background colour and the colour of the type. For example, do not put medium blue type on a light blue background. Also, make sure there is suffi cient contrast. For example, on a dark background with light coloured letters, the background should be at least 40 per cent darker than the letters and vice versa with dark letters on a light background.

• Do not use abbreviations, uncommon acronyms, all capital letters, or jargon on signage. For example:

• Use Cardiac Catheterization Lab, not Cath Lab

• Use Executive Director, not ED

• Use Admitting, not ADMITTING

• The facility name is not necessary on interior signage, nor is the Fraser Health logo. For cost-effectiveness, it is preferable not to use the facility name or organizational logo. If either is used, please follow the exterior signage guidelines on page 9 or the co-branding guidelines on page 8, as appropriate. If you have questions, call the Facilities Department at (604) 587-4789.

• Signage for contracted services within a facility, such as a cafeteria or coffee shop, can be identifi ed on hospital signage using the contractor’s generic, rather than the brand names. The contractor is free to put up brand-name signage at the location of the service, but not througout the facility.

Improper Use of SignatureTo protect the integrity, colour consistency and legibility of the Fraser Health visual identity, it is important to use it properly. Computer graphics make it easy to use the electronic fi les provided for a wide variety of applications and media, and to reproduce the visual identity accurately. Unfortunately, it is also easy to distort the signature and alter the colours electronically. Care must be taken to follow the guidelines, and to thoroughly proof all materials to ensure standards of quality and consistency are upheld.

The examples of improper use shown here apply equally to all versions of the signature provided in these Graphic Standards.

Use judgement in choosing a colour version when reproducing signatures on a background which might clash with the corporate colours.

Do not re-set any typographic elements of the signature.

Do not condense or expand the typographic elements.

Do not substitute any other typeface in the signatures.

Do not use the heart on its own without the name.

Do not reproduce the signatures in colours other than corporate colours.

For one-colour reproduction, use black or Fraser Health blue on light backgrounds and the reverse version on dark backgrounds, ensuring adequate contrast.

Do not print signatures against a background or pattern which does not provide adequate contrast or legibility.

Guidelines

Do not electronically distort the logo or type in any manner.

Do not reproduce any element of the signatures in a size too small to be distinct and legible.

Do not alter the relative sizes of the logo or type.

Do not rearrange elements of the signature.

Do not separate or delete elements of the signature.

Do not alter the horizontal or vertical scale to condense or expand the logo or type.

Do not place other logos, type or graphics anywhere within an imaginary box that surrounds the entire signature. Leave a clear margin around all signature elements.

Guidelines

Fraser Health Colours The Fraser Health colours – blue and orange – are a distintive combination among health authorities in BC. The deep blue is a “cool” colour often used in corporate identities to convey trust, strength, loyalty and reliability. The deep, vibrant orange is a “warm” colour that symbolizes energy, humanity, bold ideas and progress.

These colours are used in the signature, but are not intended to limit the choice of colours used in communications in general. Colour specifi cations are given for full colour printing (CMYK values), for spot colour printing (PANTONE® Colour Matching System numbers), for on-screen applications (RGB colours), and for web applications (Hexadecimal colours). When matching an unspecifi ed medium (such as paint or vinyl fi lm), refer to the PANTONE® colour matching system number and choose the closest visual match possible. For accurate colour standards, refer to the current edition of the PANTONE® Colour Formula Guide. PANTONE® is a registered trademark of Pantone, Inc.

Fraser Health blue PANTONE® 301 CMYK – 100, 46, 5, 18RGB – 0, 82, 147 Hexadecimal – #005293

Fraser Health orange PANTONE® 166 CMYK – 0, 74, 100, 0 RGB – 224, 82, 6 Hexadecimal – #E05206

Emergency sign red PANTONE® 485 CMYK – 0, 93, 95, 0RGB – 213, 43, 30Hexadecimal – D52B1E

Note: The colour reproduction in this manual should not be used for visual matching purposes, and will vary with printers and computer monitors. For accurate visual representations, refer to PANTONE® Colour Matching System swatches or other high fi delity printed colour guides.

Guidelines

Font Standards The typeface used for the Fraser Health visual identity signature is Erbar Condensed (a Linotype™ font). The use of this font is specifi ed for the name Fraser Health (when incorporated into the complete signature) and the slogan only.

The signature and slogan are provided as graphic fi les and should not be re-set. Erbar is not recommended for other typography.

The preferred supporting type family to be used for Fraser Health applications is Frutiger (a PostScript is font available from Adobe™ or other suppliers). Frutiger may be used only on systems that support PostScript fonts, including MAC environments or PostScript-enabled PCs.

The TrueType font that is the closest match to Frutiger is Tahoma, which is a system font that comes installed with Microsoft Windows™.

Supporting typography

Display/Headers• Frutiger – Preferred font

• Tahoma – Acceptable font and standard to Microsoft Word.

Body Text • Utopia – Preferred body text font. Suitable for long

reports or anything with a lot of text.

• Palatino – Acceptable body text font and standard to Microsoft Word. Suitable for long reports or anything with a lot of text.

• Frutiger and Tahoma – See above. Both are acceptable as body fonts, but typically they are used in the body of web and e-mail applications.

Font Readability – Some General Guidelines:The appropriate typeface for a publication depends on several factors, but consider the following when making a font selection for your next publication:

This is Frutiger LightThis is Frutiger Light ItalicThis is Frutiger RomanThis is Frutiger Roman ItalicThis is Frutiger BoldThis is Frutiger Bold ItalicThis is Frutiger Extra BlackThis is Frutiger Extra Black Italic

This is TahomaThis is Tahoma ItalicThis is Tahoma Bold

This is Utopia

This is Utopia Bold

This is PalatinoThis is Palatino ItalicThis is Palatino Bold

Font Size: • Choose a font size that is easy to read. The

younger or older your target audience, the larger the type size should be. For readers who are 65 and older, or for a visual-impaired audience, body text should be between 14 and18 points.

• For most audiences, 10 to 11 points is your best choice. For most general audiences, body copy type size at 10 or 11 points is effective. Start with this size when your target audience is unknown or covers a large range of adult readers.

• Use larger fonts for children.

• Use larger font sizes for headlines.
