A well-designed, stimulating and vibrant space is one of the most important services an academic library can offer.
The principles of good intuitive design are hugely important, and enthusiasm for library use both for pleasure and study, need to be nurtured so that these skills once learnt, can become the tools of future development.
Recent studies have produced clear evidence that campus libraries are being used more, not less as user needs are changing. Students continue to want study space, but their expectations are different. They want collaborative group space to support new ways of learning, silent areas for revision, and chill out areas and cafes to allow them to spend all day, and sometimes all night in the building.
