We rve just read the 1969 book, rrPhilippineDiary 1939-1945r' by Brig. Gen. SteveMellnik (Van Nostrand Reinhold). It startswith his MacArthur-staff days as aCaptain, the invasion, the CorregidorStand, imprisonment, escape from theDavao penal colony, wandering overMindanao, rendezous with a submarine offZamboanga, Australia and then back toLeyte, Luzon and Corregidor. The book isjumpy, sketchy, bouncyl and it appearsthat the author remembers only what he,wants to recall. Sadly missing is asatisfactory version of what he or anyoneelse was doing on Luzon after the Nipshit Pear1. That story stiIl begs for areasonable analysis of who didnrt do whatto whom. He learns that Pearl has beenhit and takes off on a 75 mile ride southof Manila to watch some cement pouring. While there, he learns that Clark Fieldis under heavy attack. He drives back tolllani Ia and goes to his quarters f ordrinks. As we said, itts a disjointedreport of what one man didl hardly worth$0. ss. Miss i t i f you can .
