OpenType Font from Font Font Library

OpenType is a format for scalable computer fonts. It was built on its predecessor TrueType, retaining TrueType's basic structure and adding many intricate data structures for prescribing typographic behavior. OpenType is a registered trademark of Microsoft Corporation.

The specification germinated at Microsoft, with Adobe Systems also contributing by the time of the public announcement in 1996. The specifica-tion continues to be developed actively and is presently migrating to an open format.

Because of wide availability and typographic flexibility, including provisions for handling the diverse behaviors of all the world's writing sys-tems, OpenType fonts are used commonly today on the major computer platforms.

Earned two BFAs: one in Fine Arts, and one in Graphic Design and Packaging from Art Center in Pasadena. He has been designing letter forms since 1992, and his first completed typeface, FF Kievit, is used around the world and has won awards from the ISTD and ATypI.

In 2000 Mike designed FF Milo which became part of the FontFont Library in 2006.

The FontFont Library is the world’s largest collection of original, contemporary typefaces. What makes the FontFont Library unique is its wide variety of outstanding type designs. The spectrum of styles ranges from tasteful, high-quality text faces, eye-catching display fonts, amusing “fun” fonts to terrifying “destructive” fonts that reflect current moods and often set new typographic trends.

The Library includes the work of some of the world’s foremost typographers and graphic designers such as Neville Brody, Erik Spiekermann, David Berlow, Max Kisman, Erik van Blokland, Just van Rossum, Tobias Frere-Jones and many, many more. Currently the FontFont Library includes nearly 4000 fonts and continues to grow steadily, adding about 200 new typefaces each year. FontFonts constantly break new ground in style, quality and innovation with their “cutting edge” typeface designs.

The initial work on FF Kievit occurred in 1995 as part of a school project and was finished several years later for a corporate client of Method Inc., a design firm in San Francisco. The openness of the characters and their proportions makes it an ideal typeface for use in small print. The clarity of classic sans serif faces (Frutiger and Univers) and the humanistic characteristics of old styles (Garamond and Granjon) were the inspiration for this contemporary design that is equally at home in a headline or a body of text. The FF Kievit family includes nine weights, true italics, old style figures and small caps – everything necessary for even the most demanding typography.
