GM Naidoo said the suspect was arrested laterthat night after a local security company believed he had been involved in a hijacking.

“The security company received reports ofshotsfiredandweresearchingforaToyotaFortunerthatwasinvolvedinthehijacking.Initially, the security officers were not aware that themenwereinvolvedinthe[shooting],”saidNaidoo.

Marshall Security’s Tyron Powell saidthey received a report that the vehicle hadbeen abandoned on the corner of Blackburn and North Coast roads and that thesuspects had fled.

“The vehicle was stopped outside theRed Hill Post Office and the two suspectswere exiting the vehicle and began to flee

on foot. Our members gave chase andmanaged to tackle one and arrested him,”Powell said.

He was found in possession of five live38 Special rounds.

The second suspect is still at large.“We checked ownership of the vehicle

and found it was registered to a person inthe South Coast. He was contacted, but heconfirmed that his vehicle was not stolenand still in his possession. On checking thevehicle’s VIN it was established that thenumber plates and licence disk had beencloned.

“Further investigation established thatthe vehicle the suspects used had beenstolen on Saturday from North Beach,”Powell said.

Although the police could not say if a

rival taxi association was involved, a member of the association, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he believed Zondiwas followed from KwaDukuza and thatprofessional hit men were involved.

He said he could not comment furtherfor fear of jeopardising the investigation.

A case of attempted murder and malicious damage to property is being investigated at the Durban North SAPS, GlendaleSAPS and KwaDukuza SAPS.

KwaZuluNatal MEC for Transport,Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu has expressed disdain over the ongoing taxi violence.

"I condemn, in the strongest possibleterms, incidents of shootings, which resultin the killing of people and endanger thelives of innocent citizens," said MEC Mc

hunu."We must be very clear in that private

security companies operate within a set ofregulations that govern their work. This includes ensuring the safety of the membersof the community wherever they operate, especially in the public transport sector."

The MEC sent a team from the department to engage the associations and attempt to stop the conflict.

“I will be meeting the leadership ofboth associations urgently to resolve theissues of conflict.

“As the KwaZuluNatal province, wehave made significant strides in stabilisingthe taxi industry. We will not allow any incident such as the latest shooting in KwaDukuza to undermine our good work of thepast five years,” said Mchunu.

Defending Zuma’s dignity>> Supporters march to show support for president following the Nkandla report

MERVYN KRISHNA

THOUSANDS of supportersfrom the South AfricanCommunist Party (SACP), the

SA National Civic Organisation(Sanco), the Congress of South Afri-can Trade Unions (Cosatu) and theANC marched through the streetsof KwaDukuza on Saturday to“defend the dignity” of PresidentJacob Zuma.

The march began at Shopriteand ended at the KwaDukuzaCountry Club grounds where a

memorandum of grievances washanded to KwaDukuza mayorRicardo Mthembu by the SACPdeputy national chairperson,Thulasi Nxesi, the SACP provin-cial secretary, Themba Mthembuand the ANC provincial deputychairperson, Willies Mchunu.

The memorandum contained alist of grievances from the alliancedirected at the Department of Jus-tice.

The SACP says it is “extremelyconcerned” at the manner in whichPublic Protector Thuli Madonsela

handled her investigation intoupgrades at Zuma’s private resi-dence at Nkandla.

Nxesi said the use of the mediato leak the earlier report, and thehabit of making comments on anincomplete process, have all nega-tively affected and unnecessarilycast aspersions on Zuma.

The SACP also questioned thepresence of the media at the re-lease of the report in Pretoria, aswell as the timing of the release.

“The media was ‘locked up’ in aboard room for about three hours

to go through the final report priorto its release via a press confer-ence, while the affected personswere never given such adequateopportunity.

“The Public Protector does notreport to the media, but to Parlia-ment, and therefore her media-driven strategy is seriously flawedand shows a complete misunder-standing of the office of the publicprotector.” said Nxesi.

The memorandum calls for the“abuses of power and the leaks”from Madonsela’s office to be inves-

tigated and addressed decisively. The SACP said crucial observa-

tions in the report included that thepresident had never requested se-curity valuations and upgrades bythe state on his Nkandla residencein KwaZulu-Natal.

“The president never misledParliament when he said that thestate never built his and any of hisfamily members any house, andthat his family is responsible forpayment of all the houses they builtfor themselves at his residence,” hesaid.

THE MEDIA WAS ‘LOCKED UP’ IN A BOARD ROOM FOR ABOUT THREE HOURS TO GO THROUGH THE FINAL REPORT PRIOR TO ITS RELEASE VIA A PRESS CONFERENCE, WHILE THE AFFECTED PERSONS WERE NEVER GIVEN SUCH ADEQUATE OPPORTUNITY.

YOU! Yes, you, gentle reader, can beall you ever wanted to be and haveall you have ever desired. Can I get

a YES?Sound familiar? It should. It’s the gen

eral mantra in one form or another thatis ejaculated by selfproclaimed motivational speakers on a near daily basis atseminars, webinars, through podcastsandin gazillions of books, leaflets and selfpublished ebooks.

I have touched on the multibillion dollar selfhelp industry before, briefly, but forpurposes of today’s rant, I have chosento focus on The Motivational Speaker, thatubiquitous creature that has nested ingovernment, theprivatesector, educational institutions and media and continuesto empty its bowels on our heads in orderto offer inspiration.

It is the message flowing from The Motivational Speaker, life coach and consultant, under the selfhelp umbrella, thatsociety today is being encouraged to embrace as if it were a cuddly bunny hoppingthrough green pastures, spreading love, peace and fortune with its magic bunnywand.

The purpose of The MotivationalSpeaker, we are told, is to motivate people. We will agree that this is not rocket science, for which, incidentally, one actuallyneeds talent.

Granted, it would be unfair to paint allwith this brush, so let us stick to the unscrupulous few who make money by tellingus that we simply aren’t good enough, andthat for X amount, we can be so muchbetter.

Today’s motivational speaker, if he orshe has reached the pinnacle of his or hergame, is possibly a wily creature whoknows that money can be made and gloryattained by sexingup common sense.

Pepper this sexedup common sensewith a concocted call for humility, togetherwith a nonoffensive moral stance, andyou have corporate clowns and wannabe

successstories everywhere sprinting toharness the mysteries of the universe in aneffort to get richer, faster, stronger, better…or finally have someone kiss their arsefor a change.

For those of you born circa 1980, common sense is a rare quality that you probably lack. Fortunately, the blame cannotentirely be placed on your brilliant youngshoulders; given that you are being forcefed a steady stream of excrement fromprevious generations who are not quitemotivated enough to face their own failures. You have now become our path toredemption, or so you keep on telling us.

It is on the Internet where we will finda seemingly endless stream of gushingabout motivational speaking (close on 11million, actually) which appears to be the

choice career for those who excel in publicspeaking and not much else.

Sadly, this does not perturb many, whoare so desperately seeking some unattainable form of hope and acceptance thattheyarewilling tolistentoorators withlimited life experience when it comes tothings like love, happiness and money.

Now, common sense tells us that common sense is lacking if we are happy to forkout large amounts of money to learn howto save money. Common sense tells us thatif we want to save money at the end ofeach month, we need to spend lessthroughout the month.

Common sense tells us that if we wantto lose weight, we should eat right andmove more. That a simple concept suchas saving money or losing weight – both

big on the agenda of The MotivationalSpeaker can lead to a 200 page best seller, should be enough to elicit a facepalmreaction from most of us.

Common sense tells us that if we havea bookshelf that resembles an orgy ofselfhelp literature, we are either not willing to put the message into action or themessage is crap.

And finally, common sense tells us thatbeing more intelligent, more beautiful, more personally and professionally accepted, richer, stronger or faster will notnecessarily mean we are happy. Happiness cannot be taught in 10 easy steps; itis a fickle emotion that flows and ebbswith circumstance. Contentment, on theother hand, is something altogetherachievable.

If however, being content is not sexyenoughfor you, feel free tosendadonationof R3000 to my personal bank account.I will then eagerly divulge using perfectpitch and appropriate amounts of facialanimation how to capture the cuddlybunny of success, hopping through greenpastures, spreading love, peace and fortune with its magic bunny wand.

The magic bunny wand of success

DESIREE ERASMUS

COMMON SENSE TELLS US THAT IF WE HAVE ABOOKSHELF THAT RESEMBLES AN ORGY OF SELFHELP LITERATURE, WE ARE EITHER NOT WILLINGTO PUT THE MESSAGE INTO ACTION OR THE MESSAGE IS CRAP

Easter – What’s it all about?>> Traditions and customs vary around the world

EASTER is one of the most important Christian festival. It commemorates the death and resur

rection of Jesus Christ.Churches are filled with flowers, and

there are special hymns and songs. Butnot all Easter customs are Christian;some, such as the Easter Bunny, are Pagan in origin.

The actual date of Easter changeseach year, and several other Christianfestivals fix their dates by reference toEaster.

In ancient times, the egg was a symbol of fertility and new beginnings. Christians adoptedthis to represent their Saviour's resurrection.

The Easter story is at the heart ofChristianity:

On Good Friday, Jesus Christ was executed by crucifixion. His body was taken down from the cross, and buried ina cave.

The tomb was guarded and an enormous stone was put over the entrance,so that noone could steal the body.

On the following Sunday, somewomen visited the grave and foundthat the stone had been moved, andthat the tomb was empty.

Jesus himself was seen that day,and for days afterwards by many people. His followers realised that God hadraised Jesus from the dead.

On the following Sunday, somewomen visited the grave and foundthat the stone had been moved, andthat the tomb was empty.

Jesus himself was seen that day, andfordaysafterwardsbymanypeople.Hisfollowers realised that God had raisedJesus from the dead.Easter Traditions

Lent is the period of 40 days whichcomes before Easter, beginning on AshWednesday.

For many Christians, this is a periodof fasting and repentance in preparation for Easter, culminating in a feast ofseasonal and symbolic foods.Simnel cake

In the late 17th century, girls in service brought a rich fruit cake called simnel cake home to their mothers on thefourth Sunday of Lent. The cake wasenriched with marzipan and decorated

with 11 marzipan ballsrepresenting the 12apostles minus Judas, who betrayed Christ.Hot cross buns

The Greeks andEgyptians ate smallcakes or buns in honourof the respective goddesses that they worshipped. Buns markedwith a cross were eatenby the Saxons to honour their goddess Eostre it is thought thebun represented themoon and the cross themoon's quarters. ToChristians, the crosssymbolises the crucifixion. You will see HotCross Buns in the shopsa lot around Eastertime. The Easter bunny

Due to its reproductive proclivity, the rabbit is also regarded as asymbol of fertility. Eggsare also symbolic ofnew life and fertility, hence one of the reasonswhytherabbitcarries a basket ofeggs.Easter eggsThroughout history, eggs have been associated with Easter celebrations.

In ancient times, theegg was a symbol offertility and new beginnings. Christians adopted this to representtheir Saviour's resurrection.

The tradition ofcolouring eggs in brightcolours representingthe sunlight of spring goes back to the MiddleAges and is still an important custom formany Christians.

In the UK, chocolateeggs are especiallypopular and Easter egghunts may be organised to findthem.

A panel van with seats perhapsMARCEL UPFOLD

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

When I requested a ride in theNV200, I was informed that it isa very popular vehicle and that

the journalists are queueing for a ride. Mycommon sense told me that due to this, the NV200 should offer an above averageexperience.

Seeing the NV200 for the first time Iwas quite impressed with the sloping frontend. The lines followed an angled line ending in the squarish rear compartment. Atthe back is a huge door, making the loadingof goods an easy task. It would appear asif the sloped front end contributes greatlyto the handling of the NV200 when ridinginto strong winds.

The interior is functional and straightforward no fancy extras. The NV200boasts an amount of space which onewould only expect from larger vehicles. With the rear seats folded up there is animpressive2.3cu.mspace.Withthemiddlerow folded down the space is an enormous3.1 cubic metres.

With the large sliding doors on the side, access is not a problem for the middle row.Getting into the rear seats is a bit tight forlarger people. Up front, the driver’s seatcould have a bit more rearward slide space.

From the side it appears as of thewheels are a touch too small. In my opiniona 15” wheel might fit better. With the extratwo seats folded down, there is enoughspace for seven people.

THE RIDEThe NV200 had no problem getting un

der way. However, after loading some passengers in the NV200 was sluggish on thetorque. However, once the revs got beyond4000 the torque kicked in and it was better.

As it was, the day I had a few passen

gers on board the Northwesterly wind washowling.

It hit the NV200 diagonally from theleft front and it was a bit like riding a balloon on water.

The effect of the wind on the NV200was apparent.

I LIKEThe two rear seats are definitely more

spacious and comfortable than some ofthe other 7seaters on the market.

The turning circle is in fact a bit “scary”.I was very impressed with this fact. One

tends to accept vehicles which are slowturners, but the NV200 proverbially turnson a tickie.

The usable space of the NV200 is reallyhuge for the size of the vehicle.

OOPSIESWithout being prejudiced but still ob

jective, I have to mention a number of oopsies which in my opinion, if attended to, willimprove the NV200:

Rear side doors have no opening windows resulting in the NV200 getting quitestuffy and hot in the rear section, specificduring the summer months.

Although the air conditioning workswell it is not delivering enough air to therear passengers mainly as there are no airvents feeding the rear of the cabin.

There are no handles to hold onto whengettinginoroutoftheNV200inthemiddleor rear rows of seats.

The passengers which I had for this testnoted this immediately. This would furtherhelp to hold onto when driving on bumpyand winding roads.

The split of the middle seats is a 2/3fromtheleftsideand1/3fromtheright.Perhaps this should be the other way round. When you have three people in the middlerow and somebody needs to get out or inat the back, then either the right hand middle row passenger has to get out or both theleft hand and middle passengers on the leftside must get out to allow the seat to folddown.

With most passengers normally getting

in on the left hand side (pavement side),this is a bit awkward.

The front door window winding mechanisms are placed at an awkward height, specifically on the driver’s side. It tends to“gnaw” at your knee whilst driving and itis difficult to have your leg in another position to avoid this.

VERDICTThe NV200, to my mind, does have a

place in the market. Why else would it bemarketed?

As a panel van with its large loadingspace and the low loading height it shouldmake the transporting of goods a pleasure. However in the combi version I get the feeling that it is the result of using a basic panelvan and then added some padding, seatsand windows.

It is as if there was no thorough thoughtprocess was undertaken during the interiordesign, resulting in the shortcomings mentioned above.

In my opinion the NV200 would be ahandy mom’s taxi once the problem areascould be solved.

Butbythesametoken, bartheseissues,it is a nice fellow to drive. Personally I donot have a requirement for a combi, butyou’ll have the final verdict after a testdrive.

Once again my personal opinion is thata 15” wheel could make the driving experience better and more stable, specificallywith windy conditions from the side orfront.
