Javanese Mask DanceFrom 7.30pm, The Main Dining Restaurant

By collaborating with the local communities around Borobudur, and to keep the traditional dancealive from generation to generation, Amanjiwo explores several dances from the Magelang area’sdukun villages, on the slope of Mount Merapi. The Javanese Mask dance (Topeng dance) isderived from an old Javanese masked drama and tells the story of Prince Pandji from the kingdomof Janggala and Princess Tjandrakirana from the kingdom of Daha of Kediri.

This dance presents the pride of the Adipati Arya Penangsang soldiers, who are preparing forwar. During the 16th century, the Demak Kingdom ruled Java and the legendary warrior, AryoPenangsang, rebelled against the king. He succeeded in uniting the people’s power and militarymite by his influence and supernatural ability. He is called Soreng. This dance derives from hislegend and the people of Mount Merbabu’s support to Aryo Penangsang.

The name refers to five mountains (four of which are active or dormant volcanoes) situated inand around the Magelang Regency – Merapi, Merbabu, Sindoro, Sumbing and Andong. Theunique geography isn’t the only hallmark of the area, it is also rich in traditional arts and culture.The Five Mountains Festival has been organized since 2002 by the cognominal community. Thefestival, Komunitas Lima Gunung, which grows bigger each year, unites people of variousbackgrounds – artists, performers, educators, academics, local elders and the young generations.

NEW YEAR’S EVEFrom 7.45pm to 8.00pm, Gupolo Gunung

Gupolo is a traditional statue of a Javanese guard who is protecting the mountain (Gunung) and its people. This dance depicts the legend of Prabu Singo Barong, who was believed to have special

powers to protect from danger.

From 8.30pm to 8.45pm, Kipas MegoKipas Mego portrays the joy of the mothers during their daily life in the village and is performed

by women from the Gejayan Village, situated on the slopes of Mount Merbabu.

From 9.00pm to 9.15pm, Kukilo GunungThe Kukilo Gunung dance reflects the life of the birds in the jungle, and is happily performed by children. It celebrates the many birds, including those that are unfortunately nearing extinction.

From 9.30pm to 9.45pm, Topeng IrengThis dance combines Islamic religious movement with traditional Javanese martial arts

or pencak silat. For the Topeng Ireng dance, the dancers are in a straight line and the rhythmic music is loud and full of energy.

From 10.00pm to 10.15pm, Rokmo KoloThe Rokmo Kolo dance uses a mask of Rahwana’s face, which is shown as emotional and

arrogant as a result of there being injustice from his leader.

From 10.30pm to 10.45pm, Geculan BocahThe Gajulan Bocah dance originates from East Java and, when performed by adults, can be very

magical and dark. However, when performed by the children of the Gejayan Village, the dance has a more lively and fun approach.

From 11.00pm to 11.15pm, Kuda Lumping This traditional Javanese dance shows a group of horse-riding soldiers.

From 11.30 to 11.50pm, Soreng TrunthungThis dance derives from the story of the people of Mount Merbabu and their support of Aryo Penangsang, who rebelled against the Demak Kingdom in Java in the 16th Century.

It depicts how the soldiers prepared themselves for war.

From 11.50pm to 12.00am, CountdownDancing together with the guests and the sounding of traditional children's toys.
