Station Owner FacesCharges Of ExtortionRome station Radio CentroSuono is at the centre of alegal controversy, followingallegations of attempted ex-tortion by its owner, An-namaria Albanesi, who re-cently spent two days in jailover the affair.

It is alleged that the fre-quency of Albanesi's secondstation, Centro Suono Stu-dio Due, interfered with thereception of another privatelocal station in Rome,Voglia di Radio, and thatapproaches to Albanesi bythe station resulted in in-creased frequency interfe-rence and then a deaththreat. These were allegedly

followed by a demand ofL300 minion (app USEapp. 250.000) lo be paid intwo pans to burn off theStudio Due frequency.

When representatives fromVolgia di Radio went to paythe first half of the demand, they were accompanied by aa policeman who arrestedAlbanesi and technicaldirector Paolo Caldani oncharges of attempted ex-

-E3LMMZI-Sklar, Bowen Begin New ConsultancyOne of the US's best-known radioprogrammers, Rick Sklar, hasjoined forces with UK music con-sultant Dave Bowen to launch anew programming and manage-ment service aimed at both radioand TV stations in the UK, Eireand Europe

Bowen Sklar Programming, asthe consultancy will be called, isbased in Swindon, England, andNew York. Among its services is'Contract Programming', whichentails a weekly playlist producedfor individual station's re-

quirements, critiques and trainingsessions for on -air staff plus the

co-ordination of competitionsand promotions.

Among the consultancy's firstclients is the UK's Bristol -basedGWR group, where Bowen hasalready worked as a music consul-tant, installing them the UK's firstcomputerised touch -screen CDmusic system.

Rick Sklar's caber in US radiospans 30 years. He is credited asthe man responsible for makingNew York's ground -breakingWABC the most listened -to sta-tion in the US in the 60s and 70s.He later became VP of the ABCRadio Division. Sklar is also pro-

fessor of communications at StJohn's University and author ofthe book 'Rocking America'.

Bowen has worked as a

presenter and manager at a varie-ty of UK commercial stations in-cluding Swansea Sound, Here -ward Radio - and Radio Aire, where he claims his re -program-ming achieved a 115% audienceincrease in nine months.

Bowen: "The industry is get-ting increasingly competitivewhich is why it is mom importantthan ever before to get the productright. The product is of course astation's programming!' E

Pollack To Undertake MTV ResearchOne of US radio programmer JeffPollack's first roles as consultantto MTV Europe will be to seek anew programme manager for the24 -hour music channel.

Bill Roedy, MTV Europe's MD

and CEO says the new employee,to work under programme direc-tor Brian Diamond, will be brief-ed to "better integrate the chan-nel's music selection, promotionand programme scheduling".

Veronica Chairman SackedThe chairman of Dutch publicbroadcaster Veronica (VOO),Wout Bordewijk, has been firedby the company's members'council following a controversialstatement of loyalty he made tothe Netherlands BroadcastingCorporation (NOS).

Bordewijk, who has been chair-man of VO0 since the company'sevolution from a pirate radio sta-tion in 1973, made the statementfollowing the Dutch Media Com-mission's imposition of an air-time suspension on VOO for itsfunding of satellite station RTL 4(M&M July 21). In the statement, made at the request of publicchannels the KRO, VARA andNCRV, Bordewijk said Veronicawould "always remain loyal to theNOS".

According to VOO spokesmanSteven Gelder, Veronica's mem-bers' council (' Verenigingsraanwhich elects the company board, considered the statement incom-patible with the company's aim tobecome a commercial concern. Itrequested that the board withdrawit, but when it refused, dismissedBordewijk and six board mem-bers. The board members, but notBordewijk, were later reinstated.

A meeting to elect a new nine -member board, which accordingto Gelder "may or may not" in-clude the six members who werefired, will be held on October 22.Until then, V00 MD Rob Out -who was not among those fired -and treasurer G Van Essen are co-chairmen. Bordewijk was notcontactable at press time. 0

Reedy says that Pollack, whohas undertaken a six-month con-sultancy with MTV Europe for anundisclosed sum (M&M August18) is "ideally placed to trackdown a suitable candidate with hisrange of contacts across the Euro-pean radio and TV industries".

Further, according to Reedy,Pollack will undertake musicresearch for the channel and con-tribute to various unspecifiedmarketing and promotionalprojects.

Roedy: "best of our mandate isto expose music besides that ofthe UK and the US. We mustalways ensure that we are playingthe right music and a key factor inthis is consumer research. Thetechniques Jeff uses in radio canreadily be applied to MTV's re-quirements!'

Pollack will not initially be in-volved in MTV's plans to adaptshows like 'Club MTV' for radiosyndication, although Roedy saysthat could change "Obviouslywith Jeff's radio background hecould make a valuable contribu-tion there

Racom Broadcast, Europeanmanufacturer and distributor ofthe DAMS digital audio storageand retrieval system, plans a ma-jor sales push to Continentalradio stations. In the UK, DAMSis already used by stations ranging

from Capital and Radio Clyde toincremental services such as JazzFM, Melody Radio and Buzz FM.

According to European salesmanager Catherine Dates, main-land Europe is ripe for suchsystems. "DAMS is now an

established product with a proventrack record. With the singlemarket, and sweeping changestaking place in broadcastingthroughout Europe, we are wellplaced to ensure DAMS plays asignificant role in broadcastingthrough the 90s!'

Already used by RTL, DAMS isalso being considered by stationsof various sizes in France, Italy,Spain and Benelux. Racom is nowsetting up a network of dealersand agents in major Europeanterritories, and will also be ex-hibiting DAMS in Brighton dur-ing the International Broad-casting Convention, from Sep-tember 21-25.

DAMS (Digital Audio MassStorage) is a hard disk basedsystem designed to replace thestudio cart machine Prices startat around £ 28.000 for a basicsystem, rising to £ 77.000 for aversion with 19 hours storage andfull disk redundancy. For furthe

capacity, systems can be net-

worked.Racom claims DAMS can do

anything a cart machine can do,"and a lot more besides".Features include a sequence func-tion that can segue tracks, withcross -fading and back-up drives incase of main -drive failure alsoavailable as options. The com-pany says the machine has beendesigned to be user-friendly,resembling a bank of cartmachines, and "can be 'punched'as hard as any cart or CD player".

As it is "more reliable and re-quires less maintenance' than

conventional carts, eliminatesreplacement costs, and requiresno physical handling of recor-dings, DAMS is also said to offerongoing savings.

At London's Capital Radio,

ean market

where DAMS has been used byboth AM and FM services fornearly two years, chief engineerPeter Jackson agrees the systemhas been helpful. "It's improvedour presentation and log keeping -if you took it away now, I'm surethe Ws would moan!' However,he admits that DAMS has not en-tirely replaced carts at Capital:"Many jingles - particularly thoseprepared by the presenters - are

still on tape!'Jackson also says that some

DJs have complained that theycan't play one track on top ofanother, as they can with carts, since this option is available in on-ly one of the station's studios. Buthe thinks this can also be an ad-vantage, since it stops them ac-cidentally playing one commercialon top of another.

Kiss Of Lifecomma ed from page I

burst, joint MD of deCon-struction Records: "I think thestation is really mailing. It is greatthat a former pirate can nowbroadcast to a specialist audiencewithout fear of confiscation!'

While acknowledging the vitalrole Capital FM has played inbreaking acts such as Black Box,which are signed to his company,Blackhurst is confident Kiss willdevelop more quickly the careersof newer deConstruction signingsHot House, Jina Foster andMaria van Rooy. The dance sta-tion, he says, has a stronger streetcredibility among London's houseand rap fans.

Technical problems restricted

test transmissions to 10 days

before launch. Unlike the earlydays of Jazz FM, the new outlet'stotal survey area is expected tomatch exactly that of its mainrival, Capital FM.

Capital's programme directorRichard Park welcomes the

newcomer. "As with Capital Gold

we have proved a new station canopen and generate an audience ofits own. But you must have atarget audience in mind!' Parkssays there will be no radical pro-gramming or playlist changes ateither Capital FM or Gold.

A E 500.000 advertising cam-paign is based around the phrase,"the station on everyone's lips".Later, TV commercials will be

transmitted without sound, theviewer being encouraged to tuneinto Kiss instead.

Initial advertising on the sta-tion will lean heavily towardsclothing manufacturers with LAGear and Chevignon and shoefirms Nike and Shelley's. Otheradvertisers include Red Recordsand the London nightclubParadise Lost.

Major shareholders in Kiss arepublishers EMAP (20%), VirginBroadcasting (15.7o), Centurion(20%) and Cmdley Printers (51/4).The incremental is the first toreceive specially -tailored news

TALKBACK

"I Listened To The Radio And Liked Music"The rise of Rafael Revert and Spanish radio

As the person responsiblefor music programmingfor the SER stations andSpain's top music radio

network, Los 40Principal., Rafael Revert

is arguably the mostpowerful man in the

Spanish music industry.lam. Bourne spoke to

Revert and discovered heis not only a tireless

promoter of Spanishmusic and the Los 40

network, but a man who isnot afraid to speak his

mind.

Q: HOW did you start out in radio?A: I was a fan, a guy who listenedto the radio and liked music. I wasat school and Angel Alvarezstarted doing a programme called'Vuelo 605' on La Voz De Madridin 1960-61 so I went to see him andstarted to help choose records. Then I saw my first ever Billboardand the Hot 100 chart, and so Ithought of doing a chart. I wasabout 14 at the time We had all thelatest records, music in Spain thenwas rubbish -Jose Guardiola, LosBoleros no rock of course! I

hated that music. Then I was toldabout Rafael Martin Blanco atRadio Madrid who did a pro-gramme with new releases, theywere all cover versions of US hits. I

thought they were rubbish but Istarted opening his mail, choosingrecords for one of the programmesand I began a chart, calling sixshops a week!

Qt So when did Los 40 begin?A: In 1963, on Sundays, we started'El Gran Musical'. We used tobring the groups to Radio Madridand paid them Pta 500 for taxis. Isoon realised that one of the basicswas to support Spanish music andwe launched all the Spanishgroups in those days - Los

Mustang, Los Telmos, Micky YLos Tonis etc Then I started a pro-gramme called 'Los 40 Primcipalesi It lasted two hours a dayand I played the 40 records I likedbest. Very few of them wereSpanish. The show grew to fourhours then six and then we went toValencia and Barcelona. That ishow it started. I was not staff until1966, before that I gave Frenchlessons in a language school fortwo years.

Q: How do you see the currentclimate for spanish radio?A: There are two sorts of radio inSpain; AM and FM. AM has toadapt to the times, its audience isfalling. Structures need to be

never know what is going to be on.It could be medicine, it could becoal mines in Leon. That winchange. A couple of years agoSpain's 16 million listeners weresplit seven to eight million AM

lithe I Revert, head of programming ad Los10 Ponopalak compiledat the age of to

changed. They are very cumber-some and expensive with lots ofstaff, lots of presenters. Theymake a huge effort to produce oneprogramme but then it is over in aflash. But it is not worth it. Theyhave to have simpler structuresand do less. All news radios that isthe future Entertainment pro-grammes - a record, aninterview, ajoke, some news - have to disap-pear. It's cheaper to have one guywho talks and talks well, who con-nects with people. The audience

chart

and six to seven million FM. Nowit's 10 million FM and six millionAM.

Qt And what about FM?A: When people realise you haveto specialise it will be fantastic -when there are two top 40 stations, two Spanish music only, country, classical, jazz etc The problemnow is that lots of people do thesame thing so it can end up a bitboring, you find the same thing onevery station. In our case there is

Los 40, and as long as there is oneother station that imitates us, thatis fine But why have a third?Launch a jazz station and you willhave 500.0001isteners.

The record companies are alsoto blame. They want everyone toplay the same music Take RadioVinilo, it used to be quite good - allBritish/US dance music -but nowthey play Spanish stuff too and ithas lost its personality. I fight a lotwith the record companies aboutit. It does not affect me because Iam no. I but they are spoiling therest and their own business. Wheredo they place specialist product ifeveryone's playing Miguel Bose?

To what do you attribute thislack of narrow banding in Spain?A: Record company pressure isless in other countries. I do notknow why there is such a lot ofpressure here. In Holland you goto a record company and ask howmany promo records they send outand they say 12. Here it is

1.800-2.000.

Maybe the problem here is thateveryone has tried to imitate Ims40. Los 40 works, so people say"that works, I will do it and I amcleverer so I will do it better thanthem". Only Radio 80 (oldies) orDial (Spanish) are clearlyspecialised. You have to specialiseand you have to tell the audience"I do this and I do it best". Youhave to be the first or the second to

do something. It is no use being12th. If you can say "I am the topheavy metal radio station" thenyou can approach an advertiserwith an audience profile,

Q: Is Europe or the US the targetto imitate?A: The US introduces a lot of thechanges, there are more ideas andformats in the US since they donor really have networks. I alwayskeep my eye on developments therebut European radio will never belike US radio. It will be in terms ofworking methods and com-puterisation but not in output. Wehave a different way of talking topeople

People in the US hear music alltheir life. In Europe, people switchoff at a certain age Maybe it is just:he fault of supply and demand, the aver -30s listener does not getwhat he would like to hear. I willtry AC in Spain when I am older!

UK & IRELANDStoke's Signal For Classic HitsStoke -based IR station SignalRadio is to launch a new servicethis autumn linking two of itsthree FM frequencies. The Signalbranding is to be dropped in

favour of a new independentidentity.

The new seven-day station willuse transmitters in Cheshire andStafford currently operating abreakfast opt -out from the mainparent. Signal in Stoke will notchange and will continue on theremaining FM and single AM fre-quencies.

by Howard Shannon

However, programme control-ler John Evington says no attemptwill be made to hide the fact thatthe as yet unnamed service comesfrom Signal. "Why throw awayyears of listener goodwill?" he asks.

The new FM will be first andforemost a music station with thestyle essentially classic hits andmellow contemporary. Greateremphasis is to be placed on localnews and traffic. It will be discer-nably different in style and musicpolicy from the existing Signalservice!' says Evington.

Atlantic Wins ReprieveAtlantic 252, the joint RTE/CLTventure on long wave has won athree-month reprieve by an Irishcourt, but its future still hangs inthe balance

The station was granted a stayof three months by the Irish HighCourt on an earlier decision toquash the Irish Planning Board's1988 permit for its ClarkstownCounty Meath premises.

The board was given permis-sion to seek a further extension inthe Supreme Court. In July,

Atlantic 252 continued to broad-cast despite the overturning in the

high court of its planning permis-sion after a successful applicationby a local resident.

After the July verdict MeathCounty Council ordered Atlantic252 to stop broadcasting anddismantle its 3W metre mastwhich has been the subject of bit-ter local opposition. But thecouncil's authority in the matterwas disputed and the departmentof communications did not in-tervene. Atlantic 252 intends toexhaust all legal options in itsfight to remain in Clarkstown. 0

Current Hits Appear By Magicby Paul Easton

Magic 828, the AM oldies -basedservice launched by Leeds IR sta-tion Radio Aire on July 17, is pro-gramming some current hits aswell as popular tracks from the60s, 70s and 80s. And advertisingbreaks have been grouped to givea clear "sweep" of 10 recordswithout interruption.

MD Phil Riley, formerly pro-gramme controller at oldies -basedXTRA-AM in the West Midlands, has deliberately steered clear of apure gold format after researchingthe music through auditoriumtesting. "XTRA-AM's researchwas sold to Trans World Com-munications (owners of RadioAfter and we also carried out ourown research which indicated thata gold -only service was not whatpeople wanted!' says Riley.

Between 09.00-10.00 on July 31,Magic 828 played Marvin Gaye &Tammi Reran, the Rolling Stones,

Elton John (Sacrlfice, the hour'sonly current hit), Percy Faith,PLO, Helen Shapiro, ABBA,Buddy Holly, Petula Clark, theTymes, Smokey Robinson, CiliaBlack, Brotherhood Of Man, theMamas & Papas, Rod Stewart,Paul Simon and Percy Sledge

By grouping the ad breaks atquarter past and quarter to thehour, Riley says the station is ableto build and hold an audiencewithout the danger of listenerstuning away during commercials.

Magic 828 faces competitionfrom Yorkshire Radio Network'sClassic Gold AM service whichcan be heard in Leeds on PennineRadio's AM frequency fromneighbouring Bradford. If 'BansWorld's planned merger withYorkshire Radio Network is suc-cessful, it would result in oneTrans World station competingagainst another.

But he stresses it will not be FMgold. "The word gold is horrible'The new station is seen as a way ofcombatting BBC Radio l's recent-ly established FM presence in thearea.

Four new presenters are to behired with separate breakfastshows from the Cheshire andStafford studios between 06.Wand 10.00. The two services willthen join together running a10.00-14.00 and 14.00-18.00 musicsimulcast. Advertising will be split. Both will carry the same name.

Thought is still being given towhat identity the Signal -run sta-tions will be given when they re-join the main network after 18.W.A separate jingle feed is beinglooked into.

Evington confirms that con-sideration is also being given tolaunching a split service on AM.No further details are yetavailable.

CBS To Review Artist RosterPatrick Decam, the new head ofCBS - one of CBS France's threelabels - says he wants to reduce thenumber of acts on the label'sroster in a bid to win the attentionof radio programmers and boostairplay.

"Radio stations cannot broad-cast all we produce so there is aneed to tighten the flow from ourside!' says Decam. "As long as wehave a radio situation where top40 is dominant and listener panelsare the basis of programming, weare forced to present program-mers with less acts. Therefore, wehave to be more selective!'

Decam says he will now studythe label's roster, which includesthree of France's top sellers (Jean -Jacques Goldman, Francis Cabreland Patricia Ka.), and re-evaluate it accordingly.

He adds: "We will concentrateour signings and limit the numberof acts on the roster to give moreattention to artist development.CBS marketing has always beenstrong and we want to have thesame reputation when it comes tobreaking new acts:'

But Decam believes the situa-tion will change and says that oneof the ways to make sure it does isby taking shares in stations, astrategy currently being developedby Henri de Bodinat, president ofCBS France.

The company already hasshares in the Lille -based stationMetropolys, which has mergedwith the Kiss network, and is apartner with NRJ in the oldiesstation Cherie FM. It is also back-ing an AOR station to be launch-ed in Marseilles in October andhelps finance Skyrock's listenerpanel.

Classical Compilationby Marc Maes

The fourth compilation album tobe released by CBS Belgium andRTBF Radio 21, the youth chan-nel at Belgium's French -languagestate broadcaster, comes out thisweek. Called Les 21 Classiques De21, it features classical music andwill be promoted on all R113Fradio channels.

The previous titles in the serieswere 21 No. 1 Hits, 21 Super StarHits and 21 Coups De Soleil.Meir Malinsky, special marketingmanager at CBS, says they all soldabout 20.000 copies.

Malinsky: "The three previouseditions, which featured well-

known pop and rock acts, werevery Radio 21 oriented as to thechoice of music. Choosing classi-cal music for this fourth compila-tion might be a risk, but I considerit interesting for both parties'.'

The decision by Radio 21,

which has a music/news format,to plan the classical music projectwas inspired by the listenerresponse to its "SequenCe dassi-quo'', when one classical track isaired at 17.30 daily. Patrick SW.,Ids, CBS head of classicalmusic/jazz, comments: "I wouldsay that this compilation is aRadio 21 product, rather than aCBS one.

"Instead of including well-

known classics like Ravel'sBolero, we opted for tracks likeLieutenant Kije's Romance (Pro-kofiev) and the theme fromSting's Russians, which was notin the original version. We havealso included well-known TV andfilm scores in their original, classical version."

(300.000 units) increased from 15to 25.

The falls in album awards werein the following categories: dou-ble platinum (600.000 units, fourcompared to nine); tripleplatinum (900.000 unite downfrom three to on); and diamond(one million units, two comparedto four).

October DecisionFor Radio 10

by Paul Andrews

The Dutch state council, Hol-land's highest regulatory body forthe media, says it will announcethe fate of private cable stationRadio 10 on October 4.

The date was set during a coun-cil hearing on August 15, whichdiscussed an appeal by state'broadcaster NOS for Radio 10'sstatus as a foreign broadcaster tobe changed. The classificationwas awarded by Holland's mediacommission, but the council hasthe power to overturn thedecision.

Under Dutch media law, com-mercial broadcasters such as

Radio 10 are allowed access to thecountry's cable networks only ifthey are considered 'non -Dutch'.Although based in Amsterdamand broadcasting mainly in

Dutch, the media commissionagreed that Radio 10 was foreign, because its "broadcasting entity"

is an Italian fin. Rele Zero. However, NOS disputes that itsforeign interest is legitimate

If the state council agrees,Radio 10 would be forced either tocease commercial activity or tocome off Dutch cable, which pro-ades the bulk of its distribution.

Radio 10 itself is not a party tothe case, which is between themedia commission and NOS, butMD leroen Soer says it has beenlobbying intensively behind thescenes. He adds: "We are prepar-ing to cope with every possibleverdict:'

However, them is no guaranteethat the council will deliver a me-dia on October 4. Serer points outthat it promised to deliver asimilar decision on the status ofTV station RTL 4 (formerlyknown as RTLAIeronique) in May,but has still not made a ruling.E

Prince Files Suit Against Sanavioby Oas Stanfield

Prince has filed a civil lawsuit inthe Italian courts for breach ofcontract against promotorFrancesco Sanavio, owner of theAvantgarde agency. The movefollows a decision by a Venicecourt to award Sanavio a US$ 1.3million confiscation order fromPrince's earnings in Italy, after thecancellation of concerts in Turinand Udine (M&M August 25).

A statement issued by Prince'scompany Paisley Park Enterprisesclaims that the contract withSanavio said concerts could becancelled if final payment foreach date was not made prior toeach concert. It also says thatalthough full payment was notmade, Prince did perform twoconcerts, in Rome and Cava

The statement continues:"Following the Cava concert onJuly 18, Sanavio and his agentssurrounded the building withSanavio's equipment and people, blocked the exits with forkliftsand refused to allow Prince's crewand equipment m leave

"In addition, Sanavio sentan extortion note to Prince'sbusiness manager demandingUS$ 200000, and release fromAvantguarde's obligations to payremaining amounts due 'in orderto get the equipment out of the ci-ty and avoid bad publicity'.

"In a statement made to thepress, Sanavio alleged that Princecancelled dates in Turin andUdine due to poor ticket sales. These allegations are false. By il-legally detaining Prince's produc-tion staff, Sanavio made it im-possible for the crew to reach thevenue in Turin in time to perform. The Udine concert seas cancelleddue to lack of payment!'

Sanavio, who says he has notreceived notification of thelawsuit, refutes all the allegationsand says: "Do you think that thejudge who authorised the con-fiscation order is stupid? Hedoesn't make an award justbecause someone has a prettyface, but by studying contractsand documents.

"The contract was for shows inRome, Turin and Udine, and thetotal fee amounted to US$I.000.040. 1 paid USE 520.000 intothe Mercantile Bank in LosAngeles on January 29 and US!270.000 on March 15. The balancewas due to be paid before June 18,but I paid Milan promoter FrancoMamone US$ 350.000 on behalfof Prince, as an out of court set-tlement for an earlier confiscationorder (M&M July 14). That waspaid before lime 18 and was morethan the balance owed!'

Sanavio has always maintainedthat a contract was never signedfor the concert in Ca..

Responding to the allegation ofextortion, Sanavio says: "I lostUSE 500.000 on the Rome concertand US! 400.000 on the Cavadate Because I lost so muchmoney, and was going to loseagain in Turin and Udine, I sent afax to Prince's attorney Gary Stif-flemann, to have the contractmodified!'

Sanavio says he asked for US$

200.000 to be paid to the localpromoter in Cava, to "get theequipment out of the city and toavoid bad publicity", and for pro-duction costs on the Ihrin andUdine dates to be waived. He sayshe also asked for confirmation ofthe Turin and Udine dates.

Amon:ling to Sanavio, Stifflemannthen sent a fax which said "forgetabout the US$ 200.000, because Iam not able to give you the moneyat the moment, but you do nothave to pay production costs",

Sanavio admits that work washeld up in Cava but blames a po-wer cut. He claims that the fork-lift incident was because one ofPrince's UK crew members droveit into a field and damaged land. This resulted in what he describesas "a little fight between local andinternational crew members".

When asked if he and his staffsurrounded the Cava venue to pre-vent Prince's crew and equipmentfrom leaving, Sanavio replies,"Do you think I'm crazy. I don'tcome from Iraq!"

Centro SuonoDenies ExtortionRadio Centro Suono programmedirector Alberto Castelli hasstrongly refuted allegations thatthe station's owner, AnnemariaAlbanesi, is guilty of attemptedextortion (see front page).

Castell "Albanesi has ownedthe Radio Studio Due frequency,88.005 FM, for seven years. Howcan that have interfered withVoglia di Radio which has onlybeen broadcasting for two? Amonth ago, Voglia di Radio askedto buy the frequency. Albanesiagreed and the amount to be paidwas L 300 million, in two parts. Itwas purely a commercial deal.

"However, when they arrivedwith the cheque they also broughtalong a policeman. They pressedcharges for attempted extortiononly two days before their visit!'

Castelli claims that widespreadpress coverage of the case doesnot differentiate between RadioCentro Suono and Radio StudioDue. He claims this has led to adrop in advertising for CentroSuono, which describes itself as a

black network station and broad-casts in central Italy to an averagedaily audience of 100.000(Audiradio).

Castelli: "Radio Centro Suonois to take civil action againstVoglia di Radio for damage to itsimager He adds that a court willdecide later this month whetherthere is a case to answer or notover the alleged extortion.

Meanwhile, Radio Studio Due,which airs Italian music plus in-ternational pop hits, is continuingto broadcast as normal. However,Castelli says he is not sure whetherplans to rename the station RadioCentro Suono Due this monthwill now go ahead.

Voglia di Radio, headed byGiovambattisti di Giovanni andFabio Bianchi, was launched on87.900 FM in December 1988 witha 60% music policy and is believed

to have the backing of the power-ful Christian Democrat party.

Voglia di Radio and RadioStudio Due are eel lined in theAudiradio statistics.

RAI To Publicise RadioShow On TVState TV RAI has decided topublicise a RAI radio showdevoted tea national artist for thefirst time Lucio Della will spendone week in the Stereo 2 studiosfrom September 18 and RAI TVwill screen adverts on all its threechannels to promote the station'stelephone number for those whowish to speak to the artist.

The event coincides with therelease of Dana's new album,Cambio and is an exclusive forStereo 2, with DaRa answeringquestions live.

The first time RAI TV andradio formed such an alliance wasin June 1989 when Stereo 2

presented an exclusive livetelephone interview with PaulMcCartney.

RAI Stereo 2 executive GigiMarriali: "I do not know if eventssuch as there increase our au-diences or not. But it is good forour image and helps to create agreater interest in our station!'

Della records on his own Press-ing label, which is distributed byHMG. Company marketing andpromotions director MicheleMondella says it is his first solostudio album for four years.

Mondella confirms that aspecial promotional 12" mix willbe selected from the album anddistributed to 50 radio stations,As well as RAI radio, Mondellasays private national stations Rete105 and Radio Dimension Suonoare particularly important forairplay.

The signal is sent via Eutelsat IF4, the same satellite which car-ries Super Channel. It is

To comply with Danish regula-tions, the Voice of Scandinavia, which is on air initially from 06.00until 24.W, is broadcasting about20% of its programmes inEnglish. There are plans forSwedish -language broadcasting inthe future.

Voice owner Otto ReedtzThottsays he wants to consolidate Den-mark before directing the sta-tion's marketing towards cablesystems in the other Scandinaviancountries. But he says it will notdo so until the performance rightsquestion is resolved.

Radio Formats - The Classical ApproachTraditionally the preserve

of 'highbrow' publicservice stations, classical

music formats arebecoming increasingly

popular amongcommercial broadcasters.

Paul Andrews looksat prospects for

three stations whichare about to enter the

European market.

Tthe demise of Radio Belcan-o does not seem to have

deterred the new classicalradio players. But will KlassikRadio or CLT's RTL Classiquefare any better? How do they hopeto win advertisers and audiences inthe competitive new radio marketof the 90s?

Ironically, the Gong group'sdecision to close the Munich -based Belcanto, described asEurope's first national all -classicalcommercial station, came withindays of the announcement thatBMG Ariola and PolyGram wereto invest in Ufa (Bertelsmann) sta-tion, Klassik Radio, due to launchfrom Hamburg this October.

Belcanto's failure has been at-tributed to a combination of pooradvertising sales and low cablepenetration - the station had noterrestrial frequencies - althoughthe parent company's investmentin an expensive Fast German prin-ting plant has also been blamedfor forcing the cutbacks whichkilled the station.

It had tried to turn classicalmusic into a popular commercialformat by adapting many of thetechniques of pop radio, for exam-ple using DJ -style presentation, but succeeded in reaching onlyaround 40%o of German cablehouseholds.

Populist approach

At first glance, Klassik's approachappears similar: the station plans a'populist' style in an attempt tofind new audiences for classicalmusic, with cable and satelliteagain forming the backbone of itsdistribution across Germany,Austria and Switzerland. MDManfred Kuehn is adamant thingswill work out.

"First, we have a terrestrial fre-quency in the Hamburg area -thatoffers us 1.8 million potential

listeners straight away. Second, wewill have wider distribution oncable systems: we are putting morepressure on the Bundespost[which controls them] to makechannels available, and we hope toget the frequencies left free byBelcanto. And, to be polite, wethink we have a better programmethan Belcanto:'

That, he believes, is the criticalfactor, as important to a commer-cial classics format as any of itspopular counterparts. He hopes toadapt the methods of Germany'ssuccessful private pop stations tothe classical arena.

"We need to get classical musicout of the ghetto, to get listenersnew to this kind of music. We hopeto appeal to young people and tohousewives during the day. I think

"We need to getclassical music outof the ghetto,"

Manfred Kuehn

the time is right for this kind ofprogramming!' He points to Lu-ciano Pavarotti's recent success inthe UK chaps, and to a revival ofconcert -going in Germany, as pro-of that a poi/War classics format isneeded.

That format itself "will beclassical in the broad sense It willbe serious, but concentrate on thepopular classics, including jazz toa certain extent, and lighter musicsuch as operettas. There will alsobe a lot of live music from themany festivals we have in Ger-many, and from abroad!'

Among tom' composers,Kuehn identifies Mozart, Brahms,Bach, Tchaikovsky and Vivaldi.Conversely, "we might have pro-blems with some contemporaryserious music and too -heavy sym-phonies - they could be presentedduring the evening programme butnot during the day!'

Speech comprises 20% of themix. Kuehn hesitates to describeIris presenters as His, but "theywill be identifiable personalities, not just playing the music but in-troducing it with background in-formation. In prime -time they willmainly be playing relatively shortpieces, with news on the hour, ser-vice information and ad spots!'

Klassik Radio is not the only

classical project pending in

Europe A number of program-mers are now turning their atten-tion to potential commercial for-mats for so-called 'serious' music.

One is Holland's Radio 10.

Transmissions of Radio 10

Klassiek were suspended in

March, following problems withits satellite relay. However, arelaunch is now planned for thenetwork, to be renamed ConcertRadio and marketed to cablesystems across Europe - par-ticularly in the Benelux, Scan-dinavia and the UK. Test broad-casts begin on September 1.

Music:speech ratio

Concert Radio is being pro-grammed by Liesbeth Duintjer, using en all -music format with avery personal selection of mate-rial. "It's not going to be musicfor the millions, with operetta andso on, but totally classical music. That's not to be confused withserious music -the classics certain-ly don't have to be serious.

"There are obviously thefamous composers like Rach-maninov, Chopin, Bach andMozart, but there will be a fewwho are not so well known, but Ilike It's something personal, amatter of feeling: we're not goingto play Wagner in the morning, and you can't have two pieces of60 minutes plus, or two or threeorchestral things, after oneanother.

"When I did the test transmis-sions last year, I just thought whatI would like to hear on the radio -but we got some wonderful reac-tion, so many people must havefelt the same'

Initially, Concert Radio has nospeech - Daintier believes theadvertising "is quite enough".However, since the station wantsto inform listeners about program-mes, that may change: "We wantto have the schedule publishedseparately, but if people prefer, wemay have to include on -air an-nouncements!'

Meanwhile, a third approachcomes from RTL, which plans apm -European RTL Classique.Satellite distributed to cablesystems and Astra home -dishowners, plus transmitters in Lux-embourg and other - as yet un-named - countries, its launch hasnow been put off until early 1991.

According to Henri Roemer, head of international affairs atparent company CLT, a formathas yet to be decided upon. "Thereis a discussion between severaltendencies. Some want it to bemore light classical, others want itmore serious!'

Roemer says no decision will bemade before the end of September. However, the most favoured op-tion is understood to be a lightclassic formula, with HA musicand speech confined mainly tobrief multi -language an-

nouncements. Daytime outputwould consist of shorter pieces, with concerts and specialist pro-grammes in the evening.

UK franchise

A classical format may also be inthe running for one of the threenational commercial radio fran-chises to be awarded in the UKwithin the near two years. Theshadow Radio Authority hasalready confirmed that one of thenew stations will be devoted tomusic 'other than pop', andClassic FM, backed by AndrewLioyd-Webber's Really UsefulGroup has announced that it willbid for the licence.

Before the bidding opens, thecompany is keeping exact detailsof format and programmes underwraps. But CEO David Maker

"The classics cer-tainly don't have tobe serious,"

Liesbeth Duintjer

again puts the emphasis on 'lightclassier' and a personal style: "Itis a populist approach - we want todistance ourselves as far as possi-ble from Radio 3 [the BBC'sclassical channelr His target au-dience is much younger, "the 25-45s who are the new and boomingmarket for classical music on

However, with only one FM fre-quency on offer, and no decisionyet on whether that will beallocated to the (presumably)'pop' or 'non -pop' franchisee, it isstill far from clear how Classic willfare. Depending on how theAuthority defines 'pop' it mayfind itself up against competition

from any number of other formats- including perhaps jazz, MORand even rock.

But handing the national fre-quency to a mainstream pop ser-vice could, Maker believes, leadboth it and competing local sta-tions into difficulties, bidding forthe same ad spend.

"Classical music is a marketwith real potential. It appeals tolow TV viewers, especially of com-mercial channels. They're a wholesegment of people which only avery limited number of media arereaching - just the colour sup-plements, really!'

Advertising potential

This realisation that classicalmusic radio can reach an untap-ped advertising market provides amajor spur to renewed interest inthe format. As commercial sta-tions in competitive Europeanmarkets hum to tight formatting toreach audiences in depth ratherthan breadth, so the appeal of aclassical option is growing.

While a classical station willprobably not deliver particularlyhigh ratings in any market, its au-

is likely to have anumber of distinctive traits. Aswell as being difficult to reachthough other advertising media, they are likely to be comparativelyhigh earners, so stations will hopeto attract premium rates fromadvertisers marketing high -valueproducts.

Manfred Kuehn confirms theprofile for Klassik Radio's targetaudience "Our listeners may wellhave a better lifestyle than a nor-mal audience Suitable goods foradvertising could include luxurycars, cognac and champagne aswell as more down-to-earth pro-ducts. Sponsorship is also verysuitable for such a high -qualityprogramme appropriate forbanks and insurance companies tobe associated with!'

Kuehn also believes that Klassikcould probably charge advertisersmore per thousand listeners thanmost pop -formatted commercialstations. And, with a heavy music -to -speech ratio, he thinks it will becheaper to run than a pop station.

Concert Radio director FoppeJan Smit takes a similar line, believing comparatively low reachwill not hinder the station. "Forus, it's the listener density thatcounts, the kind of people we doreach. It will be a quality au-dience!'

But Roemer strongly disagrees

that this is a road to riches. "RTLClassique will be a commercialstation, but it will not earn a lot ofmoney',' he admits frankly. "Thatis difficult because it is not possi-ble to interrupt the music withadvertising spots.

'Tam surprised that other sta-tions think they can make a lot ofmoney. I have made manybusiness plans - they all make aprofit, but not much!'

CLT, it would seem, feels itshould be present in this market, but has less than total faith in itsviability. RTL Classique, say,

247Henn Roemer

Roemer, will be as much a promo-tional vehicle for the organisa-don's orchestra as a commercialventure

The promotional angle is also afactor in the development of theother classical privates, withrecord companies showing renew-ed interest in finding a forum fortheir classical product.

Reflected most directly in

PolyGram and BMG Ariola's in-vestment in Klassik Radio, this en-thusiasm can be traced directlyback to the revival in classical

resales and rejuvenation of itsaudience since the appearance ofCD.

While insisting that it will not"push" BMG or PolyGram pro-duct, Kuehn also welcomes theirparticipation in Klassik Radio."As well as money, they are put-ting in their know-how aboutmusic. We are interested in makinguse of that experience!'

Transmission methods

One major handicap to thedevelopment of private classical

stations across Europe, though, isstill the shortage of terrestrial fre-quencies. According to Gong MDHelmut Markwort, terrestrialbroadcasting could have savedBelcanto. "It would have beenreceivable in cars and uncabledhouseholds, which could have

made a big difference;' said hisstatement on the station's closure

Circumstances have forcedKlassik Radio, Concert Radio andRTL Classique all to commitheavily to cable and satellite. Butall would like to move to wider FM

transmission, and for both Klassikand RTL their limited conven-tional networks will be vital in

building an early listenership baseSmit believes confinement to

cable could hold the station backin some territories. "In Holland,it's not a problem, but in countrieslike the UK where cable is

underdeveloped it can be difficult. We do have contacts with ter-restrial broadcasters, particularlyin France and Italy, and are tryingto develop others!'

Kuehn does hope that digitaltransmission via the Kopernikussatellite may boost Klassik Radio'sappeal, but with no domesticreception equipment yet availablethis remains a long -tar -maim - andperhaps only the very distant ar-rival of in -car satellite receiverswill make it viable

And this is not a route which ap-peals to Classic FM. Maker: "Peo-ple keep approaching me aboutsatellite and cable radio, but reallyI am sceptical about it. Cablereach is very low in the UK, andthere is very little evidence thateven when they do have it that peo-ple listen to the radio via cable'FM stereo coverage, offering theoptimum combination of reachand sound quality for the format'sdiscerning listenership, remainsthe all -or -nothing option forClassic

"It's the listenerdensity that counts. It will be a qualityaudience,"

Foppe Jan Smit

But even if that never happens, private classical music radio looksto have a future in Europe. Indeed, despite the hurdles to distribution, stations introducing it believe anestablished international reper-toire, educated audience and lowspeech content may .be the for-mat's trump, giving it an ability tocross national boundaries moreeasily than many pop formats.

Smit sums up the most popularscenario: "Across Europe, theremust be room for two classical sta-tions to survive I think there willbe one clear winner, probablyplaying popular light classics, withanother, more serious alternative!'That, he says, mirrors the US ex-perience - and he counts his ownstation as a contender for the se- .

cond position - with RTL andKlassik likely to battle it out forthe lead.

PROGRAMMINGME

'A New Dawn For An Adult New Age?The abundance of so-called

'new age' labels andgrowing sales reflect the

genre's ascendingpopularity with consumers

across Europe. But,as Chris Fuller discovered,

this has not beenmatched by a growth in

radio exposure.

.1.hough useful as an urn-brella term for a broadrange of synthesised, am-

bient and acoustic musical styles, the 'new age tag is now widelydisparaged by both musicians andrecord industry, mainly because ofyuppie/new hippie lifestyle con-notations. Alternative titles like'contemporary instrumental' and'new instrumental musie aboundbut as labels such as WindhamHill and Private Music have

broadened to encompass vocals, perhaps US radio's preference for'new adult contemporary' (NAC)is the most suitable and is the termused for this article.

Despite the problems of defini-tion and misinterpretation, WestGermany, Europe's largest albummarket, boasts a fertile NACrecord sector with home-grownlabels such as IC, Sky andErdenklang faring well next to theinternational competition of Win-dham, Private, Venture, No Speak,Nonesuch, Global Pacific Mea-dowlark, Cypress, Naradalist is endless.

IC has achieved mom than20.000 international sales with thelikes of Peter Seiler, Software,Dancing Fantasy and Megabyte, athough label manager MarkSakautzky says this is no thanksto TV and little thanks to radio. The label targets specialist nettingshows on the ARD public stationsSDR (Stuttgart), SFB (Berlin)and, in particular, WDR (Col-ogne), where Winfried Trenklerhosts the influential `Schwing.argon" Thursday night show.

Sakautzky: "Most Germanprogrammers with influence whocould give this kind of music a truechance to get to a broader au-dience are just so damned ar-rogant. They keep on pushing thesame old established stars and tru-ly believe they are God's gift whenit comes to judging what peoplewant to hear. The funny thing isthat these people keep on urea.ing for new musical ideas and

complain that nobody comes upwith anything different any more'

In the UK, too, exposure isseverely limited. Val Rooker, aLondon -based publicist for Pri-vate Music says that despite thelabel's broader -than -most reper-Aire, chasing airplay for such non -chart based material can provefrustrating. Rooker. "It appealsmore to night-time listening, where we score some success. Butplays during evening hours are ex-tremely difficult to monitor. It re-mains a new and strange music tomany and I believe some program-mers are not aware of the depth ofpopularity that the music has withthe public. The appeal is certainlyenough to warrant regular shows!'

Private, a New York -based labelwhich was set up in 1983 by Peter

the music that it may use it as thebasis for a new channel.

RMC programme controllerNovella Hann decided to backNAC in November 1988, consider-ing it a "natural alternative" to therock, pop and dance which tendedto "saturate the national air-waves". Hann: "Our listeners cryout for Variety and we felt that themood generated by much NACmusic lends itself ideally to late -night programming. The hunchwas right and the listener responsehas been excellent!'

RMC, one of Italy's leadingcommercials with a daily audienceof some 1.168 million (Audiradio)compiles a monthly top 10 NACplaylist, which Hann says is "bas-ed on radio acceptability andlisteners' requests, not on sales".

Frank Cody believes Mere Wa reel market for NAC radio In Europe.

Baumann of electronic bandTkngerine Dream, embraces vocaland left -of -field artists, with AndySummer& Leo Kottke, Nona Hen-dryx and Yanni established starsand autumn releases planned forSuzanne Ciani, Ravi Shankar andPhilip Glass. Rooker says the labelis currently talking to new Londoncommercial Jazz FM in a quest toestablish a regular NAC slot.

Similar placement problems m-ist in Spain and France, though inItaly the signs are more encourag-ing. Leading the way, commercialstation Radio Monte Carlo(RMC) has a high NAC content, with a nightly 22.00 show hostedby 'Nick The Nightly' and NAC-styled tracks inserted amid the popand rock throughout the day. In-deed, RMC declares such faith in

And in March, in collaborationwith independent label Les FoliesArt, RMC launched Europe's firstspecialist NAC magazine, thebimonthly New Sounds.

Hazan is currently consideringintroducing another NAC showand researching the feasibility ofan all-NAC channel: "We mayhave a full-time NAC station. Whynot? But I want to expand on asure footing, rather than make aleap into nowhere'

If it proceeds, the NAC stationwill provide an obvious boon forNAC label& with whom RMCalready enjoys a close relationship. The station's logo has appeared onthe cover of both Windham Hilland Private Music compilationsand it intends to collaborate withother labels on future CDs and

promotions via the New Soundsmagazine.

Though Italy may be wakingup, it still has far to go to matchthe US where some 20-25 stationsoffer variations on an NAC theme. The format's development is wide-ly attributed to radio consultantsFrank Cody and Owen Leach, who launched the definitive NACstation, KTWV 'The Wave in LOAAngeles in February 1987. Thatstation's success has now beenemulated across eight major mar-kets including Chicago, Dallas,Miami, San Diego and Seattle andthe format has been successfullyexported to Japan, where] -Wave isTokyo's leading station.

Through consultancy companyCody/Leach Broadcast Amhitec-ture (CLBA), 'The Wave concepthas recently been offered to Euro-pean stations. "I think that inEurope there's an even broader ap-plication for NAC than in the US,where though radio offers tremen-dous choice the market is veryfragmented and music tastes emperhaps more rigiC says Cody. "Ithink there's a greater open-

mindedness in Europe as regardsnew musical ideas:'

According to the US model,NAC stations pull their highestaudiences during the middle of theday, from 9.00-15.00, with manylisteners tuning in at work. In LA,KTWV leads the ratings for thelucrative 25-54 year old male au-dience which, says Cody, "is anextremely desirable target foradvertisers".

Cody's vision of NAC is broad, from the jazz -tinged pop ofEverything But The Girl throughPat Metheny, Kitaro, Vollen-weider, Rubaja, Hernandes, WillAckerman to Steve Kindler andYanni. He describes the field as"music for. the informationgeneration, whereas the poundingrhythm of rock & roll reflects anindustrial age Essentially it's amood service. People lane to itknowing it's a place where theycan relax but also knowing it's notgoing to send them to sleep.

"At the same time, people won'tfeel embarrassed to be associatedwith NAC because it's not muzak, but rather quality and creativemusic of a certain ambience It'slargely passive, sure, but radio canbe a passive as well as an activemedium. The skill is to modulatethe flow!'

SPOTLIGHTLos LobosThis week sees the release

of Los Lobos's new LP'The Neighbourhood!According to LondonRecords international

manager John Reid: "It'san album project but weare still going to go afterCHR radio for a hit with

the first single, 'Down OnThe River Bed!" Gary

Smith reports.

Los Lobos started out as anEast Los Angeles cultband, making pop/rock

music with a strong base inTex/Mex. With albums like 1983's...And A Time To Dance (theirsecond) and How Will The WolfSurvive, they built up a loyal pressfollowing. But their big breakcame in 1987, when RitchieValens's family asked them toperform the soundtrack to 'laBamba', a movie about the rock &roll star. The album sold fivemillion copies worldwide, whilethe title track single peaked at no.

6 in the Eurochart Hot 1W.The follow-up was La Pistola,

which was released in late 1988and was largely an acoustic LP oftraditional material, sung in

Spanish. In contrast, the band'snew LP, TheNeighbourhood, is arock album.

Its September 3 release will befollowed by the single Down OnThe River Bed on September 10,which will coincide with a shorttour of the UK, Holland, Italy,Germany and Spain.

Los Lobos are signed to Lon-don Records for the world exceptNorth America (Slash Records).John Reid explains the company'spromotional plans: "The cam-paign is based around the band'savailability for promotion andlive work in Europe, because theyhave heavy commitments in theUS.

"We are sending Ws one-track7" white labels and one-trackCDs of the single, just before theband arrive for their tour. We hada choice of devoting the twoweeks that they are here to promo-tion, or to concentrate on livework and to fit in interviewsaround that. We chose the latterbecause they area very good liveact and because, when their timeis so limited, just doing dullpromotional work seems a waste'

Down On The River Bed isonly being released in Europe.Reid again: "It is a good song, even if it is not an obvious choiceas a single. If it gets a lot ofairplay that's fine, but it's more of

a promotional tool. The follow-up single will be either Emily orAngel Dance.

"They are both very CHR andwe plan to release them just beforeChristmas. The band will be backin Europe for more promotion inJanuary/February, and a tour willfollow. In the meantime, we willsend out electronic press kits, which include a video interview. And there am plans to film a TVspecial in California for broadcastin the new yead'

keep hearing rumours fromImy spies in the UK that

George Michael's forthcomingEpic album Listen Without Pre-judice: Volume I will he followedup with volume 2 this side ofChristmas. Nice timing, George, and if you can come up withanother little smoochy numberlike Last Christmas this year, youwill definitely be on my festiveplaylist.

Alas, not many anniversariesfor you this week. Bee Gee BarryGibb is 44 on September I, Al

Stewart is 45 on September 5 andChrissie Hynde will be 39 onSeptember 7. And this month thattrend -setting UK magazine Blitzcelebrates its 10th year. Among itsclaims to fame: it was "probably"the first magazine to interview themighty Smiths and Wham!.

September 1 is also the launchdate for London's Kiss FM. Ac-cording to one of the DJs, thepresenters "will not talk all overthe intros and boost their egos".Welcome on air, boys and girls, and I wish you luck.

Actually, there are a few newstations for me to say hello to -Rrn International has beenbroadcasting since August 15 andRadiocentras in Lithuania hasalso just launched (although I

haven't managed to tune in yet). And it's a big hello to the fast newnational UK station in 23 years,BBC Radio 5, on air on August27. David Hatch, MD of BBCNetwork Radio, tells me R5's theplace to be if you want a bed -timestory for your child, language tui-tion, World Service updates and aringside seat at all the great sportsevents. All at once? A virtual rot -call of Beeb personnel - TerryWogan (rev), Stephen Fry, PhillipSchofield, Pamela Stephenson,Emma Freud, Johnnie Walker, the irksome Simon Fanshawe etc -will be among the hosts for whatlooks to me like the broadestvariety of shows available on onestation in Europe. Unless, ofcourse YOU know better...

Oh, and on a similar subject, Ineed your help. If you area jazz, ahard rock or any sort of specialistshow presenter, could you dropme a note? It's all to do with a topsecret mega plan of mine. Nuffsaid.

The hen Following the newsthat Robbie Vincent has donateda sizeable chunk of his personalrecord collection to Kiss, comesreports of a similar gesture atanother incremental - this time bythe programme controller ofStockport -based KFM. Only dif-ference here is that John Evingtottnow wants his 3.000 records back!

Oh dear. Independent RadioNews in London and its sister sta-tions LBC Talkback andNewstalk have cut another 21jobs. Meanwhile, one of the sta-tion's producers, Peter O'Con-nell, has been fired for airing aphone-in on "sexual deviancy"including bestiality. PresenterBarney Burnham is said to havebeen suspended for six month;but whether this means he hasbeen hung from the ceiling is notreally clear!

interest to everyone who has evercrossed swords with their boss. It's a typewritten note from a sta-don manager telling off a DI forstaying out of the office too longon a job. But then the job was in-terviewing John Lennon andYoko Ono lying in bed in Mon-treal as a peace protest. Thememo has a hand-written note ofexplanation on it from Lennonhimself and was expected to raiseat least £ 2.200 at the auction.

I was in Prague last month tosee The Cure performing to12.000 people, a great night in-deed. Perhaps the best bit (byWestern standards) was the priceof a ticket - between US$ 740. Ex-pensive for the East, red if thatprice is anything to go by, I will beseeing all the super groups inCzechoslovakia in the future

Now here's a sure hit fromEMI's John Briley. Fancy doingan on -air interview with MCHammer? Well, take one into thestudio, ask it a question and bangthe microphone a few times!

John, it's the way you tell 'em.

"Music programmes are

mainly devoted to various kindsof pop, though classics am alsopart of the schedule. Musicvaries a lot, from easy listeningin the mornings, to get people ina happy mood, to specialistshows on soul, country, oldies, world music, and so on.

"Music selection is done by

individual 111. and producers. There is no playlist but Ids havetheir own powerplaye which de-pend on personal taste Usuallypeople play up-to-date releases,so there is a lot of pop, but wealso use magazines like Bill-
