Traditionally, fabric was basted around paper shapes to allow the individual to hand piece together complex shapes. Today, modern templates may be made from paper, card stock or even plastic. EPP quilts are known for their use of repetitive geometric shapes. 2O2O QUILTER OF D ISTINCTIONLinda Van Gastel

Heritage Park’s Festival of Quilts, Quilter of Distinction for 2020 is Linda Van Gastel. We are excited to share the vision and inspiration of such an accomplished quilter and pillar

of the quilting community. Linda began quilting in 2003 after retiring from a successful career as an engineer, primarily with PanCanadian Petroleum. After dealing with a busy work schedule for many years, she felt all that energy could be used to express herself through art, and quilting filled that need. Linda was inspired by her daughter and the mother-daughter relationship flourished as they went to classes together, workshops, retreats and quilting vacations. Linda wanted to immerse herself into the quilting culture of Calgary and she joined the Piecemakers Guild. While with Piecemakers she happily spent many years volunteering in a variety of roles. She was also a member of Calgary Silver Thimble Quilters Guild, Victoria’s Quilts, and was a former chair of the Festival of Quilts committee at Heritage Park. Her skills in planning, leadership, organization and technology were put to good use in critical roles for all of the quilting community associations she was a part of. Currently, Linda is part of a new quilt group in Calgary, SPECTRA, and is a member of Canada’s Fibre Art Network; of course in both groups she is working hard behind the scenes in aiding with technical tasks. Choosing Linda for the Quilter of Distinction was a unanimous decision amongst the members of the Festival of Quilts committee. Her work is bright, vibrant and can be seen winning ribbons at the Calgary Stampede Western Showcase year after year. In her own words, colour brings “joy, vitality and warmth.” Linda focuses on art quilting now, but her roots were founded in traditional quilting where she added her own flair with her use of bright and non-traditional colour themes. Ruth McDowell was an inspirational force that brought Linda into pieced pictoral quilts where her real passion has flourished. Linda continually thinks outside the box and enjoys making her own patterns and taking her own path in quilt design.

2020 WORKSHOPS

WEDNESDAY, MAY 2O – CHERYL ARKISON Heritage Park Made Modern Workshop 9:00 am – 4:00 pm | $75.00 +GST

Heritage Park has a number of hidden treasures that only the astute quilter probably notices. Textiles and quilts are in place in the homes across the Park but don’t quite garner the attention of the horses, rides, and the bakery. In this workshop, we will take a beloved quilt from the Heritage Park collection and work on a modern interpretation of its design. This will include playing with colour, scale, and even improvisational techniques. Each quilter will leave with their own unique interpretation and either a small quilt top or the start of something grand!

FRIDAY, MAY 22 – KATHY K. WYLIE New Ways to Hexie: English Paper-less Piecing by Machine Workshop 9:00 am – 4:00 pm | $125.00 +GST

When hexagon-shaped patches are arranged in concentric rings around a center, the resulting design is known as a Grandmother’s Flower Garden. This classic arrangement is traditionally done by hand using a technique known as English Paper Piecing. But modern times have brought along new options and we will explore them in this workshop.

THURSDAY, MAY 21 – JANET BARKER Hex Trade Workshop 9:00 am – 4:00 pm | $75.00 +GST

Using simple strip piecing techniques and a 60o ruler (or your favourite triangular ruler), join Janet to explore the many possible block variations in this hexagon sampler quilt. Triangles are cut and traded to create new patch combinations such as spinning stars, baby blocks, pinwheels, hexagonal wagon wheels, and pieced triangle variations. Note that there are no Y-seams involved! Janet will also dip into her extensive collection of hexie samples to show alternate sizes and settings, demonstrating that a wide variety of projects can be made using your Hex Trade block designs. The required pattern is included in the workshop fee.
