his year marks our 25th anniversary of Christmas in the Woods…recognized by Sunshine Artist Magazine as one of the top craft shows in the country for the third consecutive year. We’re excited to be part of something so awesome that it attracts attendees from

more than 30 states and has become a yearly family tradition for many. Every year when I’m getting ready to cut the tape at Gate B to let the crowd in, I’m delighted to see familiar attendees who tell me they come year after year. Some say they’ve been coming since the festival started! So thanks to everyone as we once again host an outstanding line-up of crafters (including 33 new participants), concessionaires, and entertainers in a magical wooded setting.

Merry Christmas and God Bless “Everyone,”

y name is LES Polinko and I am a Fantasy Sculptor. I

have also been referred to as a Fairy Artist and a Creature Maker, both would be true. This makes me a perfect fit for this wonderful Christmas show, for after all there is none more magical than Santa! When you visit my booth you will find all manner of Holiday creatures including Frost Bites, Winter Trolls, Jingle-Bell Rocks, Christmas Trees in Training, and the ever popular GLUMP (Grumpy Lump of Coal.) You will also find sleeping baby fairies, peaceful dragons, grouchy mandrakes, Ents and many more whimsical creatures - all up for adoption! Be sure to stop by and see us! My original creations are all hand-sculpted. My main medium is polymer clay with mixed media, including resin and epoxy clays. I am inspired by fairy tales, dreams, child wonderment, and nature. My father is a Horticulture Professor, so it is no surprise that so much of my work is nature based. There was never a vacation that we went

I was young and eye level to many of the planters. The air in there was humid and fresh. My favorite areas had tiny water plants. For me, it was like peeking into an amazing miniature world! dressed and embellished. Each snowman is weighted at the bottom, which allows it to stand nicely. The clothes are made from different types of fabric, including fleece, wool, sweater knit, and flannel. Some scarves and hats are made from repurposed items such as sweaters, throws, scarves, etc. We are always searching for special fabric and embellishments to make our snowmen unique. Even each individual nose is sculpted from clay and baked. We add a few new designs to the collections each year. We are very thankful for the support of our families and especially our husbands, Baxter and Brian. They are always offering to help in any way possible, whether it’s making display shelves, preparing the booth or helping to keep things running smoothly at the show. Creativity is expressed in so many different ways, and Christmas in the Woods is a great example of that. It is such a pleasure to walk through the beautiful setting and see the displays of all the talented artisans, listen to the music, and enjoy delicious food. We are honored to be a part of it and hope to see you this year. Stop by Booth #79 to say hello. Enjoy the season and God Bless!

At Peace Valley Bakery and Orchards, 2019 marks the 41st year for me John Day and my mother Cecilia Day. She was my inspiration to start baking at the orchards. Using old family recipes from our Polish heritage, I started to bake when I was old enough to stand on a chair to help my mother. She’ll celebrate her 98th birthday in October, yet continues to work seven days a week from five a.m. until noon with my sister Carolyn Cope and me. We use her award-winning Polish heritage recipes, experience and knowledge to make pies, breads, cookies and Kolaché.

I t is her commanding presence and explosive stage personality along with her dynamic and versatile voice that has made Vanessa Campagna a fan favorite. These traits

along with her passion to perform have earned her the opportunity to work with some of the best music entertainment people in the business as well as perform at some of the biggest music venues across the country. It is her diversity, yet vocal purity that earned her the respect of world-renowned multi-award winning, director/composer, Marvin Hamlisch; who claims, “Vanessa is the real deal”. Marvin took Vanessa under his wing and developed her, taking her along with him to the National, Buffalo Philharmonic, and Pittsburgh Symphonies for a variety of shows. Vanessa has shared the stage with some of the greatest artists in music such as Reba, Blake Shelton, Keith Urban, Idina Menzel, Gloria Estefan and many more. She has performed at the Latin Songwriters Hall Of Fame Awards, accompanied by Eduardo Marturet and the Miami Symphony Orchestra. Vanessa payed tribute to Latin songwriting great, César Portillo de la Luz, singing one of his hit songs; “Contigo En La Distancia.” Vanessa continues to work in Nashville singing, producing, and writing music with A listers such as, multi #1 hit songwriter and producer Derek George, Chuck Jones and mega-hit maker Desmond Child. Smith on his new pop album, “A Million Lights,” as well as his latest album, “Awaken,” as she performs his hit single, “WAYMAKER.” You can see Vanessa live with him on select tour dates this coming year. She was part of the 2013 OSCAR winning team who collaborated on the music and lyrics for the Academy award winning documentary/short, Inocente, which aired on MTV. Dee and Walker Coffman

ee and Walker Coffman from Canton, Ohio have been

creating angels for 33 years. Who would’ve thought in May 1987 when they worked together to create the sketch of a unique angel they would still be making those angels today. They are self taught and each angel is an original design and created completely by hand using wire and crystals in birth month colors. There are angels in various styles and sizes ranging from ornament size to tree toppers. It takes from one to four hours to complete each angel and all designs are hand made with love. When you purchase your Angel each is packaged in tissue and box to assure the angel gets carefully to it’s destination. Those destinations not only include locations in the United States but they have also been taken internationally. Ten years ago they both retired from Corporate America to pursue

their passion of creating angels and now travel b e t w e e n Ohio and Florida to let the Angels spread their wings. Dee and Walker’s customers have become friends who return year after year for a new gift for a loved one or a gift for themselves. People collect angels for many different meaningful reasons such as a symbol of Faith, Hope, Love, Strength and the remembrance of a loved one. Anonymously they share those reasons in a book Dee keeps called “Thoughts.” Stop by and read the heartfelt thoughts of their customers. Angels are an appropriate choice for any gift giving occasion. Bailey Taylor

rom the time she was a little girl Bailey Taylor had the love of music in her

blood. She was always singing around the house with her sisters, pretending to be on stage performing. It wasn’t long before family members, as well as friends, began to notice that there was something special. In 2007 Bailey, at 8 years of age, began performing the National Anthem at numerous local sporting events. She soon realized how much she enjoyed performing and was anxious to do more. In 2010, she got the opportunity to perform the National Anthem at PNC Park for the Pirates. She also was selected by the WPIAL to perform the Anthem at the High School Football Championships at Heinz Field. She continued to perform at numerous events throughout the years. During this timeframe, she began working, learning and gaining experience in the studio working with Producer Extraordinaire Rick Witkowski. In the summer of 2012, she had the tremendous honor of performing at the “Welcome Home Celebration” for Hopewell’s own Olympic Silver Medalist Christa Harmotto. That Fall, she went back into the studio to sing background vocals on a song for B.E. Taylor’s new Christmas CD and later that year she made guest appearances at a number of shows during the B.E. Taylor’s Christmas Tour to perform that song with him. She had become a regular part of the Tour performing in front of approximately 35,000 fans throughout the Christmas Season. Today she continues to write, record, perform and in the fall of 2018 she moved to Nashville to “Chase Her Dreams.” As she moves into this chapter in her life and career, she believes that music is a gift from God and she hopes to continue to share that gift for many years to come.

I live with my husband, two children, and three cats in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I work full time as an artist. My studio, which I have joyfully turned into a Hobbit Hole, is located in the Borough of Swissvale. Formally, I am an internationally awarded sculptor, illustrator, and teacher. Examples of my work can be seen on my website (www.lespolinko.com) and in various publications and journals. You can also follow me on Facebook and Instagram (@lespolinko.) I have degrees from Purdue University in Fine Art Painting, Drawing, Art History and Art Education. Most recently I have also become a Food Network Champion for the Network series ‘Winner Cake All!’ Late last summer, one of my best friends and Frosted-Envy bakery owner, Cathy Burnheimer, “volun-told” me that she had signed us up for a Food Network Challenge. I said, “Okay Cathy, just throw it on the pile!” Little did I know then that we would pass all of our interviews and get cast for the show. By October, right before opening weekend for Christmas in the Woods, we were on a plane to Los Angeles. The tricky thing about this adventure was that I had no experience in sculpting food! I acquired most of my knowledge streaming YouTube cake videos the month prior. The challenge was to create a sculpted cake in honor of the third anniversary of the popular Broadway show, “Broadway Princess Party.” Even though I had no experience using modeling chocolate I was able to use my knowledge of sculpture to design something that looked like less of a cake and more of what I create. Between Cathy’s expertise of fondant-work and baking combined with my structural and sculpting skill we managed to pull out a WIN! It was a true team effort for one of us could not have succeeded without the other. It was both an exhilarating and terrifying experience, one we will never forget and are so grateful for! Our episode aired in January 2019. You can see our Fairy Tale ending online on the Food Network’s ‘Winner Cake All,’ episode 4. I promise, it is very entertaining! Life is quite a wonderful thing! One day you may be smelling and sketching the Roses then the next Giada De Laurentiis may be yelling at you that “you have 20 more minutes!” Either way it is an adventure and every adventure has challenges. The point is to always go on the adventure. You will get discouraged at times, just try to get back on your path as quickly as possible. I like to think that it’s part of my job to help! I often describe my creatures as ‘little bits of joy.’ Life can be tough, so I create happy things for people. Many of my buyers have told me that they like to take their creatures to work with them. That way when things get tough they always have someone on their side, smiling at them. Unless they bought a GLUMP (then it’s just commiseration!) All joking aside, creating things that uplift others is a true privilege and I am truly grateful that this is my job! Stop by and visit me at Booth #112

Jason Catron

ason Catron began singing at the age of 2. His first song was “Jesus Loves Me” at his small church in

Kentucky where he grew up. His parents recognized his natural gift for singing and enrolled him in formal voice lessons by the age of 7. The next year Jason started singing professionally. He continued singing all through his formative years in churches, political events, musical theater productions, and touring regionally doing solo shows. Eventually he enrolled at Belmont University in Nashville where he studied Music Business. After college he spent a few years working in artist management until one day he decided to quit his day job and pursue music full time. The very next day, he was asked to sing on the “Hour of Power” at the then famous Crystal Cathedral where he went on to become the biggest selling artist for the Cathedral. Jason spent the next few years touring as a solo artist all over the world by making a name for himself as a well beloved tenor. In 2010, Jason was asked to become part of a newly formed tenor group based in Victoria, BC, Tenore. During his time with Tenore, they recorded 3 studio albums, performed on countless TV shows, entertained over 250,000 fans, and won 4 Canadian Covenant Awards. In 2016, Jason left Tenore to spend some much needed time off the road and give attention to his highly successful vocal coaching and artist development company based in Los Angeles, CA, The Vocal Lab LA. Today you will find him spending countless hours developing new talent from LA to Norway. He is also in the process of recording a new full length album returning to his roots as a Crooner. Whether coaching or performing, Jason’s heart is to encourage everyone he meets, and having toured in some of the greatest venues from Vancouver to the Vatican, you will be inspired by Jason’s velvety vocals and gift for performing.

WoodhavenNew Designs for 2019!

I would like to extend to you an invitation to join us at the 2019 Christmas in the Woods Festival. My products are unique in the Arts and Craft business because I feature wood products each incorporating Hand Sculpted artwork. My pieces are all original designs that utilize a marble sculpting compound, hand detailing and time intensive antiquing process, which in turn gives them a very rich, old world appearance. As an added benefit to all of my customers, I finish all the pieces for either indoor or outdoor display and actively copyright each one to assure you that you will not find anything like them anywhere else. Please stop by for our regular demonstrations and experience works of art that are pleasing to behold and a joy to own and collect. Thank You

HAND-WRITTEN NOTES NEVER OUT OF STYLE

Chris Rush

love Christmas in the Woods” says artist and crafter Chris

Rush who has been selling at the event for more than 10 years. “I love the wooded venue, my fellow crafters in their period outfits, the cute vendor ‘cottages’, the smell of the various foods cooking, and especially the outdoor church service for vendors on Sunday mornings. And, of course, I love seeing returning customers as well as meeting new ones year after year. The McGaffics do a great job organizing and managing the event which seems to get better every year.” Chris is the owner of ‘Chris Rush Designer Notes.’ She has been creating and selling hand-made note cards since 1985. Somewhat surprisingly, even in these days of electronic texting and e-mails, Chris points out that people still appreciate and enjoy receiving hand-written notes, and her business continues to grow. Chris hand draws the designs that appear on her note cards and embellishes each card with a piece of tatted lace

(Tatting is related to a technique for rope looping and knotting originally used by fishermen, sailors and net-makers traceable as far back as ancient Egypt. Later it was revived as lacemaking in France where it is called ‘frivolite’, and in Italy where it is called ‘chicchicchanario.’ The piece of cotton tatted lace is made integral to the design, appearing as a flower, the sun, a star, a bow or other appropriate element of the overall design. So dedicated to the use of tatted lace in her designs, she will not make a note card design in which she cannot logically incorporate the piece of tatting. Chris first learned the art of tatting while living in Asia back in the 1970s. She was then reacquainted with the art in the 80s when she was volunteering at a western Pennsylvania senior care home and saw one of the residents using the traditional small shuttle to make strings of tatted lace. The resident patiently worked with Chris to perfect her technique and she has be making the lace pieces ever since.

Chris makes her tatting using a small hand shuttle but other ways to tat use a needle rather than a shuttle. Chris now has more than 600 original card designs including floral and holiday designs, dogs, cats, woodland creatures, beach scenes, greeting (get well, sympathy, birthday, congratulations, etc.) and a wide range of cards containing uplifting Scripture verses. The cards are packaged in sets of 5 cards with envelopes and offered in boxes of one design or as an assortment. Chris works in a small studio in her home where she begins each new design with a pencil sketch. The idea for the design may come from a photo or a customer request, but more often than not, from simply observing nature’s beauty around us. When the design is complete, Chris prints the basic card using her home printer. She then manually adds the tatted lace pieces and other finishing touches (dimensional paint, glitter, etc.) to each individual note card, making each card a ‘one of a kind’ design. For example, dimensional paint is used to represent snow, glitter glue becomes a star or the ocean or Christmas lights on a tree. Her ‘non-artistic’ husband, Alan, then ‘adds value’ by folding and packaging the cards for sale. (Alan likewise loves the personal interactions with Chris’s customers during Christmas in the Woods.) At the request of several customers, Chris has recently added a new product offering to her portfolio: tempered glass coasters gift-boxed in sets of 4 featuring her most popular floral or Christmas designs. In the future she will be adapting several of her other designs for use in the coasters. She will be featuring the coasters sets for the first time this year at the Christmas in the Woods event. Chris and Alan look forward to seeing their friends, both new and old at this fall’s show. Chris Rush Designer Notes is located in Booth #111.

ob Bellamy is a refreshingly different kind of hammered dulcimer player. Accomplished on the mandolin and guitar in the old time and bluegrass world, he was smitten by the hammered dulcimer back when they were

hard to find. From his farm in rural Ohio he became a builder by necessity and took to the instrument naturally, developing a fluid style uniquely his own. Highlights of Bob’s career include annual Christmas performances at the Biltmore Estate and the Greenbrier Resort. As well as high profile events held at George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens including: General Washington’s 275th Birthday for the Founders, Pulitzer Prize author David McCullough, members of the European Union sponsored by Coca Cola, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

he Ambridge Area High School Steel Band, under the direction of Todd Hartman, has received national recognition for its outstanding musical ability, unique style,

and infectious energy. Since its inception in 1988, the steel drum program has grown from five students participating after school to an average of sixty band students. Their current musical repertoire reflects a diverse collection of styles including traditional calypso & soca, big band swing, afro-cuban, latin-jazz, classical, pop, and tropical-rock. The steel band was one of only three high school groups from across the nation selected to perform at two of the American Association of School Administrators National Conferences, one of which gave them an opportunity to open up for Steven Spielberg’s keynote address in San Francisco. Additionally, they have been to three National School Board Association Conferences, and most recently, performed for over 9,000 engineers and vendors from all over the world at the annual Association for Iron and Steel Technology’s International Conference. The steel band has been invited to perform for cultural outreach assemblies at thirty different school districts located around the Pittsburgh area and has performed at twelve different higher learning institutions. Their most memorable experience came when they played with the marching band in the 2004 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California. It marked the first time in the 115 year history of the parade that a steel band combined with a marching band.

A VISION, A GOAL,MULTIPLIED MANY TIMES OVER

Signs and Wonders

e are Signs and Wonders. This is our 9th year here at

Christmas in the Woods but our 12th year of making and creating a variety of painted, stained, and stenciled wooden signs. Signs and Wonders is a non-profit organization run and operated by volunteers from Christian Gathering Church located in Gambier, Ohio. Our group started from humble beginnings and has grown tremendously since its start 12 years ago and we never would have imagined it would be where it is now. In the beginning before we were the organized group now known as Signs and Wonders, it started as church member Colleen’s goal to raise $100 to send to the church’s mission in Kenya, Africa. The villages in Kenya had been experiencing a severe drought and crops had failed, leaving many people hungry and starving. They were in desperate need of food and money to buy more seeds to plant new crops after losing everything. Colleen had a goal to raise $100 to send to help those affected by the drought. She decided to get

creative and started collecting scrap wood from The Carpenter’s Sons carpentry shop. From there she began painting, sanding, stenciling, and staining the scraps to make homemade decorative signs with a variety of sayings. Word quickly spread through the small community church of Christian Gathering and other families joined along side Colleen to help paint and stencil scrap wood to help her meet her goal. In a short period of time after the church group started working together, we had raised $1,000! God blessed Colleen’s vision

and the goal of selling $100 was multiplied by ten! From there, the group came together and decided to keep the momentum going by continuing to make signs and enter in a local craft show to see if we could continue to raise money for the mission in Africa. The local craft show was successful and we even began to receive special request signs. From there, things have continued to grow and expand. We started gathering once a week and members of the church volunteered their time and resources to paint, sand, stain, and stencil a variety of wooden signs and stools. We began making a whole evening out of it each week and started doing potluck dinners together. As we continued to grow, there was no longer enough scrap wood from the Carpentry shop to make everything. We started buying some of our own wood and expanded products we were making to include large barn doors and vintage windows. The barn doors are made from repurposed barn siding and the windows have been salvaged from various renovated old homes and barns. We began entering multiple craft shows a year and turned the whole thing into an organized operation. As the demand for more signs grew, our methods in making them have also grown. One of our church members learned how to make silk screens and brought the idea to the group as a way to make the most amount of the small size signs in a time efficient manner. He began making silk screens with a variety of different sayings which helped our group maximize our efforts. With all of our efforts being maximized, we began to run out of space to put everything we were making for various shows. So, several years ago The Carpenter’s Sons carpentry shop built an addition onto their building to house the operation that had become Signs and Wonders. With a space of our own, it only continued to help us grow to what we are today. We started having a yearly open house around Christmas time for the local community to come experience who we are and what we do, while they do some shopping for the holidays. It has been such a joy and a journey throughout the years to be able to grow to where we are today and to use this ministry to help not only the villages in Africa, but our local community as well. We have absolutely loved our time being part of the Christmas in the Woods community and look forward to many more years to come! From all of us here at Signs and Wonders, thank you for taking the time to get to know us more and we hope to see you out there at Booth #98!
