About MCSA:
MCSA, a non-profit corporation, was established in 1991 tohelp meet the social needs of the Muscatine area.
A group of private citizens were determined to keep the 36dorm style rooms on the second floor of the YMCA availablefor single men in need. Richard Maeglin purchased thebuilding with the intention that it might become a centerfor strategic action within the community. The building wasoriginally referred to as the “Heart of Hearts”.
MCSA was formed to make a difference in the quality oflife in Muscatine. Specifically, the following unmet needswere identified: housing, poverty, family violence, barriersto service availability, substance abuse, and discrimination.
Since its inception, MCSA has continuously worked toestablish programs and lay the groundwork for improvingthe lives of Muscatine citizens. Early programs and activitiesincluded: housing for single men, the Fine Arts Academy,MuscaTEEN Center, clothing closet for migrants, a Saturdaymeal site, site of Muscatine Community College GED andESL classes, opening the transitional family shelter, sellingand relocating houses after the 1993 flood, and housingdevelopment on Muscatine’s west side.
Later in 2000, MCSA narrowed its mission to focus onproviding services that will tangibly improve the quality of lifeof those it serves. The mission, as adapted in 2000, was “toprovide emergency and temporary shelter, basic health care,and educational and vocational support services for thosein need in Muscatine County.” he programs and projects ofthe 1990s and early 2000’s were refocused to the missionof helping Muscatine-area homeless get back on their feetthrough the expansion of case management, along with afocus on skill development and personal responsibility.
In 2005, the Muscatine Pediatric Dental Clinic openedto meet the need for an affordable dental clinic. In 2009,MCSA opened the MCSA Vision Care Clinic, staffed by localvolunteer optometrists, under the direction of Dr. Peter Korpi.In 2011, MCSA created systemized programming aroundhomeless prevention.
The Muscatine Domestic Violence Shelter was added tothe organization, in 2014.This shelter promotes healing andchange with trained staff and certified counselors availableto clients.
By the end of 2015, MCSA served 1,559 residents andclients; 45% of whom were children.
MCSA is poised to continue to fulfill its founders’ originalintent, to meet unmet needs within our community, and willcontinue to evolve and serve.

MCSA.
Sales from the book will be used to purchaseadditional books allowing MCSA to continue thiswelcome gift to future families as they transition tolife at MCSA.
