    MADISON AVENUE AT 71ST STREET

“Christ, Mary, Saints, and Angels in Glory,” Girolamo Mazzola Bedoli (ca. 1538)

  • about the feast of all saintsIn the New Testament, the word “saints” is used to describe the entire membership of the Christian community, not only those who are extraordinary in their faith. The Church is “the Communion of saints,” that is, a people made holy through their baptisms into Christ. This communion exists throughout history, continues into the present, and endures beyond the grave. We, who are living saints, continue to have fellowship with those whose work is done and who have entered into the nearer presence of their Lord. Today, we join with them in worship, in watching and praying for that great day when Christ shall come again to make perfect our common humanity in the image of Christ’s risen glory.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we were not able to adorn the Church with flowers at Easter in memory of our beloved departed. It is fitting that we should remember them on this feast day of All Saints. Please see page 16 for the names of those who have died this past year and those whom we remembered at Easter.

    GATHERINGprelude Improvisation Stephen Tharp

    rector’s greetings

introit The Beatitudes Russian Orthodox Chant, arr. Richard Proulx

Remember your servants, Lord, when you come in your kingly power.

Blessèd are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessèd are those who mourn; for they shall be comforted. Blessèd are the meek; for they shall inherit the earth. Blessèd are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they shall be satisfied. Blessèd are the merciful; for they shall obtain mercy. Blessèd are the pure in heart; for they shall see God. Blessèd are the peacemakers; for they shall be called the children of God. Blessèd are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessèd are you when the world reviles you and persecutes you; and utters all manner of evil against you falsely for my sake: Rejoice and be exceeding glad; for great is your reward in heaven.

Remember your servants, Lord, when you come in your kingly power.

the collect of the day Celebrant The Lord be with you.People And with thy spirit.

Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty God, who hast knit together thine elect in one communion and fellowship in

the mystical body of thy Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow thy blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that thou hast prepared for those who unfeignedly love thee; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who with thee and the Holy Spirit liveth and reigneth, one God, in glory everlasting.

    People Amen.

    The people sit.

THE WORD OF GODthe first lesson 1 john 3:1-3See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet

been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

Reader The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.

psalm 34:1-10,22 said responsorially 1 I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall ever be in my mouth.

2 I will glory in the Lord; let the humble hear and rejoice.

3 Proclaim with me the greatness of the Lord; let us exalt his Name together.

4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me out of all my terror.

5 Look upon him and be radiant, and let not your faces be ashamed.

6 I called in my affliction and the Lord heard me and saved me from all my troubles.

7 The angel of the Lord encompasses those who fear him, and he will deliver them.

8 Taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are they who trust in him!

9 Fear the Lord, you that are his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing.

10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger, but those who seek the Lord lack nothing that is good.

22 The Lord ransoms the life of his servants, and none will be punished who trust in him.

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. the sermon The Rev. Eva N. Suarez

After a period of silent reflection, all stand and say

the nicene creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen

    and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

the prayers of the people Asst. Priest In peace, let us pray to the Lord.

    Following each petition

Leader Lord, in thy mercy,People hear our prayer.

The Celebrant concludes the prayers with a collect and the people respond,People Amen.

confession of sinAsst. Priest Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.

A period of silent reflection is kept.

People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against thee in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved thee with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in thy will, and walk in thy ways, to the glory of thy Name. Amen.

  • 8

Celebrant Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

    People Amen.

the peace Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you.People And with thy spirit.

All greet one another in the name of the Lord and then are seated.

offertory anthem And I Saw a New Heaven Edgar Bainton

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth:For the first heaven and the first earth were passed away;and there was no more sea.

And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

And I heard a great voice out of heaven, saying,Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men,and he will dwell with them and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them and be their God.

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes;and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be anymore pain, for the former things are passed away. — Revelation 21:1-4

    the great thanksgiving

Celebrant It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God, who, in the multitude of thy saints, hast compassed us about with so great a cloud of witnesses, that we, rejoicing in their fellowship, may run with patience the race that is set before us; and, together with them, may receive the crown of glory that fadeth not away. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying,

invitation to communionCelebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for

you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

a prayer for spiritual reception of communionAsst. Priest Let us pray, with those gathered at home or away.People In union, dear Lord, with the faithful at every altar of your Church, where your

blessed Body and Blood are being offered to the Father, I desire to offer you praise and thanksgiving. I present to you my soul and body, with the earnest wish that I may ever be united to you. And since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I pray you to come spiritually into my heart. I unite myself to you, and embrace you with all the affections of my soul. O let nothing ever separate me from you. Let me live and die in your love. Amen.

Those gathered in the church are invited to receive Communion or a contactless blessing as directed by the ushers; we ask that all present come forward. Along with those at

home and those who are unable to receive, we pray with those who make a Spiritual Communion, as the Prayer Book directs on page 457: “If a person desires to receive the Sacrament, but, by reason of extreme sickness or physical disability, is unable to eat and drink the Bread and Wine, the Celebrant is to assure that person that all the benefits of Communion are received, even though the Sacrament is not received with the mouth.”
