nuestras cicatrices profundas y ocultas. El Sanador quiere

tocar las furiosas llagas en nuestras almas. Él quiere sanar

nuestros resentimientos, nuestros corazones rotos, nuestras

adicciones.

Algunas leprosas estallan hoy y desaparecen mañana.

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

I’ve had so many graced times in my life, but some of the

most meaningful surround the hundreds of couples with

whom I’ve worked to plan beautiful music for their wed-

dings. The brides were all beautiful, it seems, but today’s

gospel brings one straight back into my heart.

She was a blonde, blue-eyed southern beauty. She

worked out rigorously so as to wear that stunning size-two

wedding dress. All of her friends sharing this day with her

were equally gorgeous, equally starved, equally perfectly

manicured and massaged and coiffed.

And on her wedding day this ebullient, lovely bride―in

love with her groom and in love with Jesus― arrived with

an oozing, raging fever blister on her upper lip. No make-

up could hide it. No one could pretend it wasn’t there.

Except, of course, this darling bride. She greeted each

guest with the warmth and confidence of someone who

knows she is loved totally, inside and out. She introduced

her handsome groom around the room. He was as smitten

and adoring as on any of their perfect, made-for-tv dates.

I’ll never forget her. She taught me, through her vulnera-

bility, that our “leprosies” can challenge the perfection we

think we’re presenting to the world. She seemed to un-

derstand this deep truth: we are loved― wildly, madly―

anyway. The Bridegroom knows our deeper, hidden scars.

The Healer wants to touch the raging cold sores in our

souls. He wants to heal our resentments, our heartbreaks,

our addictions.

Some leprosies erupt today and are gone tomorrow. But

the real lesions are the ones we carry inside. So here’s the

question: do we want to be healed? Oh yes, God, yes.

Would today be too soon?

Can you remember a time when a superficial disfigure-

ment brought you to a deeper love of Christ?

AROUND THE COMMUNITY FEBRUARY 11, 2018

Ash Wednesday Schedule: 8:30 a.m.—With St. Rose Academy Children 12:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m.—Bilingual

Our Music for Lent On Wednesday, as Lent begins, you will notice some changes in our music. To help us experience the season, remembering Jesus’ time in the desert, we will use the traditional Latin Sanctus and Agnus Dei instead of our usual Holy and Lamb of God. This is an opportunity to get a feel for the centuries-old use of Latin as the official lan-guage of the Church. For some, the Sanctus and Agnus Dei will sound familiar, and may be a good reminder of mass in our early years. For others, let this be a chance to tap into our tradition. All masses will use the Latin, which may come easier to a Spanish speaker than to one speaking English. Remem-ber, just two mass parts will be in Latin for this season. Everything else will be in English, or, at 11:30, Spanish.

AROUND THE COMMUNITY FEBRUARY 11 2018

St Mary's Jacobite Syriac Orthodox Church consecrate their new building. Since the fire at St. Mary Jacobite Syriac Orthodox Church we have shared our church with them so that they could con-tinue to worship as a faith community. We want to congratulate them on successfully renovating their sanctuary and as they celebrate the Sanctification and Dedication ceremony. May God bless and strengthen their parish. LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK We never marginalize or turn our backs on those who suffer violence, oppression from unjust systems, pov-erty, illness, or disease. Jesus never turned anyone away, but always extended a hand of healing and compassion. He would insist on extending God's mer-ciful and unconditional love to all, even if it meant breaking the Sabbath or civil law. Does the way we treat others, especially those who are different than us, reflect the freedom, joy, love, and good news of the Gospel? COMMUNITY MINISTRY FOOD BANK would like us to collect canned fruit again, for the month of Febru-ary. Please place your donation in the basket in the entrance of the church. Thank you for your generosi-ty!
