The l a s tn at io na l r ev iv al of s ign i f i cance was back in 1874 whenDwight L. In the words of one biographer ,"Scotland was s t i r red to i t s depths in a degree neverknown before."

    In our mini s t ry , in t he c hu rc h- pl an ti ng team, andin the summer in ternships , it i s our purpose to onceagain s t i r Scotland to i t s depths in a l a s t ing s p i r i tua l rev iva l . VOLUME 2 November, 1987 NUMBER 11TH E WORD IN SCOTLAND

    rORWARDinO AQEMT:

    Dear F r i end s ,

    An h i s t o r i c meeting was held on October 25, 1987.The n ews of this e v e n t was not r e c o r d e d in t h e headlineso f any o f th e w o rld 's leading newspapers. You're no tl i k e l y to hea r abou t it on th e r ad io o r t e l ev i s i on . However , the th ings spoken about in t h i s meeting have thepo t e n t i a l to r ad i c a l l y a l t e r th e course o f hundreds andthousands o f l i ve s , with th e f a r - reach ing e ffe ct s la st in gin to e t e r n i t y .

    In case you haven ' t guessed by now, I 'm s pe ak in g a bouta church meet ing . Sunday, October 25, was the very f i r s tof f i c i a l meeting of the Stra thclyde Chris t ian Church.("St ra thc lyde" i s the name of the region which conta insGlasgow and su r round ing areas , s im i l a r to a county inAmerica . ) We met in our l i v ing room a t 11:00 a.m. fo r " theapos t l es ' teaching , fe llowsh ip , breaking of bread andprayer" . As i s only na tu ra l , we a re beginning l i f e as avery sm all organism, bu t we a re con f iden t t h a t as we remainf a i t h fu l to Him, God wi l l use us to help bu i ld the St ra thclyde Chr i s t i an Church in to a mighty army. No c r ea t u r esp r ings from th e womb fu l l y grown, bu t must grow over ape r iod o f t ime with the proper d i e t and exe r c i s e . Likewise, r a the r than merely "racking up points" it i s ourgoal to make many d i sc ip l e s whose f a i t h wi l l endure andspread long a f t e r the American in f luence and l eadersh iph a s b e e n r emov e d .

    Having l iv ed in Scotland fo r a year and a ha l f now,we've had p len ty o f oppor tuni t ies to observe the r e l ig iousscene f i r s t - h and and ga in some i n s i g h t as to why th echurches here are in such p i t i f u l condi t ion . Here are someo f our f ind ings : whi le 47% o f th e p op ula tio n cla im churcha f f i l i a t i on , only about 17% ever a t t end a t a l l , much l e s sr e gu l a r l y a t t e n d . Of t h i s sma l l number , abou t 60% a reP r o t e s t a n t , 40% Ca t ho l i c . The Catho l i c Church i n Sco t l andi s even more s t eeped in t r a d i t i on than its Americanc o u n t e r p a r t .

    The Pro t e s t an t Church membership can be div ided in toth e Church o f S co tla nd , and a l l o the r groups. The Churcho f Scot l and has made a f ine a r t o f " tu rn in g t h ings ups idedown, as if the po t t e r were thought to be l i ke the clay ."( I s a iah 29:16) That i s , they have al lowed t h e i r counci lsand t r ad i t i on s to tw i s t , ed i t , add to and ca s t a shadow o fdoubt upon th e revea led Word o f God. Most o f the o the rchurches are e i ther sp in-offs of the Church of Scotland orsmal l l e ga l i s t i c and exc lus ive churches .

    There fo re , we be l i eve t h a t Scot l and i s very much t i r edo f a l l t h i s nonsense and ready fo r a change-- to ge t backto s imply fo l lowing the New Testament sc r ip tu res as th eon ly gu ide fo r th e church . Tha t i s what we a re commit tedto .

    P r a y e r Req u e s t s :

    1 . Pray fo r a l l the members of t he c hu rc h- pl an ti ng team,as some o f them are having a hard t ime r a i s i ng suppor tto locate in Scotland.
