IPv6 ISP and IX in Taiwan

• 7 out of 12 IPv6 sTLA (/32) allocations were made to major ISPs – HiNet launched trial commercial services since 2001– TANet is going to build Taiwan’s largest Academic I

Pv6 network in 2003• One IX provides IPv6 services

– TWIX is the largest IPv4 IX (Internet Exchange), but only has 3 IPv6 members at present.

– ASNet provides local networks transit services to oversea IPv6 networks. Some local IPv6 ISPs are peering with ASNet.

– Native link: 10 (research inst., companies, manufacturers)

– Tunnel link: 30 (various)• IPv6 Plan of 2003

– Introduce high-end IPv6 routers– Add 2 more PoPs– Will upgrade T1 to GE (Gigabit E

IPv6 Product Vendors/Producers

• Taiwan is the largest supplier of user-end network devices. – Ethernet Card/Hub/Switch 、 WLAN Card/AP 、 ADSL/CATV Modem…

• Not many vendors show interest in IPv6 yet. – ODM/OEMs basis market followers and produce by orders– ROI (Return of Investment) is not clear

• Some will release IPv6 products in the second half of 2003.

• IPv6 Forum Taiwan plans to push the industry by introducing several industrial promotional programs.

IPv6 in e-Taiwan Project• e-Taiwan Project

– Budget: 36 billion NT$ (> 1 billion USD) – The key to the success of “Challenge 2008: the Challenge 2008: the

6-year National Development Plan6-year National Development Plan”

– http://www.nici.nat.gov.tw • Five integral parts

1. e-Infrastructure“Broadband networks will be fully

installed with implementation of

IPv6 and wireless LAN environment”

2. e-Life3. e-Industry4. e-Government5. e-Transportation

Summary• Taiwan needs IPv6 to develop e-Society.

– e-Life, e-Industry, e-Government, and e-Transportation.

• Driven by the national IPv6 program, ISP, Research Inst., telecoms are getting involved.

• Industry reacts slower, but will catch up very soon.

• IPv6 promotion is an international effort, Taiwan would like to cooperate with any country/organization.
