Position and orientation

The shape and position of the object in relation to surrounding terrain

indicates that it is advisable to:

POSITION AND SURROUNDING

“Face” of an object is associated with activity, motion, visibility, identity, con-

nection to the “outside” and with flow. The “back” is associated with opposi-

te meanings and values of repose, stability, protection, internalization and

accumulation. “Face” needs open space and “back” needs support.

The terrain in the surrounding is sloping from street entrance towards the

yard and the street below, from west to east. There is also a slight tilt of the

terrain from north to south. This formation suggests that the object has the

needed support on western and northern sides, while it potentially has open

view on east and south. Due to the neighbouring object in close proximity on

the south side, the eastern side emerges as the side that has the most open

space wherefrom it is the facing most in concordance with the surroundings.

The internal structure of the object is organised along the east-west axis,

and the external shape of the buiding also accentuates this line as pivotal

for the interpretation of the connection of external forms to interior organi-

zation.

INTERPRETATION:

East is where things are initiated, and west is where they come to

fruition. The object is positioned to receive the energy of initiatives

from the east, and the surrounding forms enable accumulation/col-

lection of results at the back of the object.

Facing East in this surrounding provides strong symbolic pro-

tection at the back from the gardens of the Royal Palace on the

west and from the Royal Palace building to the northwest. North-

west is position of highest authority, while west is the position of

results, of harvest and of joy. This formation suggests that venture

in such oriented space should have support from authorities, good

financial results and also lots of satisfied clients.

Eastward orientation also means that the terrain on the left side,

considered the Dragon side is higher than the terrain on the right

ACCUMULATION POINT

side which is considered the Tiger side, so the qi flows from the

Dragon and can be collected at the Tiger side. Since Dragon

signifies initiative and creative energy, and Tiger signifies results,

the flow from Dragon to Tiger is considered beneficial. It is espe-

cially so, if there is some form that has a capacity to collect and

retain qi on the Tiger (right) side. The terrace on top of the gara-

ges and the large terrace at the first floor are two external points

that could be arranged to represent such a place of accumulation.

IN CONCLUSION:

It is advisable to tap into the positive east-to west and north-to-

south flow in the interior by providing visual solutions “enabling”

free flow within the space along the same lines, and to emphasi-

ze the capacity for accumulation and stabilization on western and

southern parts.

- confirm an eastward-facing orientation by internal distributions, arrangements and designs

- provide as direct east-west communication as possible within the object, with emphasis on openness and activity at the eastern side and accentuated stability and accumulation at the western side

- provide at least visual points of connection for the north-south flow within te building

- establish a visually attractive point of accumulation on the roof of the garages (like some kind of roof garden)

The most important aspects of shape and structure that should be

addressed in overall design are:

- division of the internal space and external form in two almost dis-

connected units (northern and southern “wings”) indicating possible

problems with cooperation and coordination. The connection should be

established at least by visual--symbolic means, on both floors.

- division of the internal space along the longitudinal (east-west)

axis, disconnecting the “face” from the “back”, which might indi-

cate a slower realization of plans and goals than expected. The con-

nection should be established at the point of interruption (wall of the

small office at the “face” towards the elevator and toilet) at least on

first floor.

- the small toilets beside the elevator (on both floors) are located

near the center of the building and opposite the entrance, which

means that part of the energy of results and finances can “escape”

with the water flowing out at this spot. Flowing out in the center might

indicate frequent unexpected expenses which might influence the over-

all balance. If possible these toilets should be sealed off, and the space

utilized for storage. If sealing off iis not possible, then the door to the to-

ilet should be made “invisible”, either by masking it with wall color, or by

some reflective surface which directs the energy away from the toilet.

- the space of the stairway, being outside the main entrances to the

flats, weakens the energies of the western direction inside the flats.

The energy distribution chart of the space shows that the “star of finan-

ces” resides in the west within the building. Therefore the space of the

stairway should be included in the branding/design scheme of the flats,

in order to complement the “missing” part by linking it visually to the in-

ternal spaces. Some symbolic interventions in the internal space might

additionally enhance the weakened energy of the west.

DIVISION IN EXTERNAL FORM

Since the prospective Center is basically a joint venture

of different legal entities and that the services rendered

are not directly linked to each other, it is of utmost im-

portance to establish connection between the flanks,

in order to ensure that the Center shall be perceived as

one entity and that it should function as a whole.

The space between the two exuberant windscreens

could be used for branding the venture as a whole,

an integrating factor in the divided space. The glass

wall of the stairway could be used for that, or some

other creative solution might be found for the same

task.
