On Thursday 5th April Heald tested their new Matador 4. Not only did it take an impact from a 7500kg truck travelling at 48kph with zero penetration and zero dispersion, but was fully functional after impact!

The Matador4 is a new model based

on the recently tested Matador3. It comprises two central moving bollards, giving a clear opening of just over 4 metres.

It is again truly surface mounted, requiring bolting into place only and is ideal for a variety of applications

including temporary installations. One of the benefits of this new system is the bollard does not lower into ground so is therefore visible to users at all times making transit extremely safe for the driver and also any passing pedestrians.

Founded in 1986, Heald can claim a wealth of experience in the manufacture of high security barricade and barrier systems and have a proven track record that is difficult to surpass. They have developed an impressive

range of products, ranging from PAS 68/K12 anti terrorist Roadblockers to traffic bollards, designed to enhance the security of premises and improve the protection of personnel.

Timberwolf is pleased to announce that from 1st February 2012, all of their new Road Tow machines and vehicles are now fully homologated and completely compliant with the new European Whole Vehicle Type Approval (ECWVTA) legislation.

With the legislation becoming mandatory from 29th October 2012 for all Road Tow machines and vehicles, Timberwolf have taken the proactive step of becoming homologated ahead of schedule so that purchasers can be assured that conformity has already been achieved.

The purpose behind introducing this legislation is that it will reduce trade barriers by creating a level playing field for companies wishing to sell their vehicles in Europe.

All machines sold by Timberwolf® will now hold a Certificate of Conformity as part of the homologation process

– homologation simply refers to the process of assuring compliance to legislation or regulations by an individual or an organisation.

The improvements include new rain flaps, anti-trap bars and reflectors, plus some less visible changes such as the VIN number stamped into the chassis, and are designed to comply with the new legislation.

Welcoming the Minister, BSW’s Chairman, Martin Gale said, “BSW’s long-term commitment to our Newbridge site reinforces the importance of the forestry sector to both local and national economies.

“Thanks to this investment and improved efficiencies, we are now producing more home-grown timber here than ever before, leading to increased sustainable usage in expanding UK markets such as timber frame houses and the repairs, maintenance and improvements sector.”

Fisher German’s strong belief in providing superb client satisfaction by continually improving working practices and quality control, lead them down the road of ISO 9001 quality management certification, which their Retford office achieved in January 2012.

Boasting a significant 180 years in land and property management, Fisher German LLP is a leading national firm of chartered surveyors and specialist property consultants.

Fisher German’s Retford office is now enjoying the same benefits of ISO 9001 certification as their other 13 sites; some of which has held this quality management scheme for ten years.

“Certification has created more efficient processes, allowing all our staff from surveyors to administrators to save time and, therefore, costs” says Tim Shuldham, Office Partner.

By going through the certification process, Fisher German has created a suite of standard documentation for new jobs and existing management agreements. Tim adds “We have created a streamlined and consistent process, from start to completion of the work, ensuring a smoother workflow and leading to improved customer satisfaction.”

The British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) welcomes the news from the water companies that landscaping and turf businesses will have further exemptions from the hosepipe ban.

The adjustment to the Temporary Use Ban by the seven water companies in the South and East of England allows ‘landscape gardening businesses’ and ‘their customers’ to use hosepipes to water newly laid turf and plants, for up to 28 days from planting.

This decision comes as it was confirmed that the record rainfall experienced in April and continuing rain in May has reduced the severity of the on-going water shortage in the South and East of England although groundwater levels still remain exceptionally low and the hosepipe bans remain in place.

Wayne Grills, Chief Operations Officer for BALI said, “We are extremely appreciative

of the fact that water companies have reviewed the restrictions on the landscape industry in light of the record rainfall that we have experienced. Our members were facing serious business challenges as a result of the restrictions and this was likely to get worse with lost contracts and job losses.”

Forest Garden’s recently updated UK-manufactured Larchlap garden timber trade range has received high praise from builders merchants and DIY retailers, thanks to its no fuss, best value approach, coupled with the quality of design that is synonymous with Forest.

Larchlap has long been offered in trade merchant outlets across the UK.

However for the 2012 season, Forest has boosted Larchlap’s offering through enhanced point-of-sale, merchandising displays and upgraded labelling. Forest Garden has also significantly increased awareness around Larchlap’s UK manufacturing credentials. Using timber sourced from Forest’s own local sawmills, the company is able to offer a range that is completely manufactured in the UK and this message

is highlighted in all Larchlap branding and labelling. As a result, Larchlap’s popularity has seen a resurgence, as more merchants and retailers look to maximise the opportunities that come from stocking such a high quality commodity range.

Forest Garden’s Larchlap brand offers a wide range of garden essential commodity lines, including the trade

lap and featheredge fencing panels, as well as overlap sheds in a variety of sizes.

Jean, who was a former editor of TTJ and for the last decade handled public affairs and communications for TRADA, was well-known, respected and liked throughout the industry, described as having “unflagging energy” and a “passion for timber and the timber trade”.

With a degree in French and German from Heriot Watt University, she began her career in 1979 as a sales executive with Lumber Products (Timber Agents) Ltd. Three years later she joined Benn Publications as assistant editor of TTJ. She was promoted to editor in 1986, a position she held for three years before becoming publisher of the company’s timber group.

In 1991 Jean set up her own communications business and in 2002 she returned to the timber industry as she became PR consultant to TRADA,

TTJ editor Mike Jeffree said, “She was a skilled, professional journalist and communicator and hugely knowledgeable about the timber business, but she was also a good friend with an irrepressible sense of humour.”

HEALTH AND SAFETY

“I re-call at the time discussing the creation of a schedule for our first safety conference with our UK partner company Easygates, it was then that we heard the tragic news that a young child had been crushed to death by a gate” said Andy Holz of ASO. The result of this tragic incident (and then a near identical fatal accident one week later) instantly changed views within the industry and lead to a completely new approach to the first safety conference’s inception and content. “We found ourselves presented with a huge challenge, to provide balanced and impartial information on legislation and BS-EN standards whilst also giving the attendee’s vital information to help instantly improve safety levels within the industry” said Holz.

In October 2010 the inaugural GSC (Gate Safety Conference) was hosted

in the Midlands , the event was a great success with over 230 attendee’s from 150 separate companies all eager to gain as much information & safety knowledge from the event as possible. With the feedback gained from this event it was clear that the Industry required more focused guidance and a representative body to carry things forward. In the months that followed the successful creation of a “Powered Gate Group” within the Industry body DHF has served to provide the required platform. The focus group has worked hard to create and launch the HSE endorsed “Guide to gate safety” which is now downloadable directly from the DHF’s website and will be distributed to the industry in the coming months. This coupled with the excellent work of the affiliated initiative Gate Safe (Also created in 2010 by Jacksons Fencing) who have

designed and launched a CPD for specification only goes to show how the Industry can and is moving forward.

ASO has now decided to organise a second Gate Safety Conference.

With so many questions having been raised regarding industry standards, legislation and the HSE s̀ involvement we feel it is our duty to update you. With presentations from the DHF, HSE and Gate Safe along with an in depth analysis and breakdown of the “guide to gate safety” the conference is an essential event for those wishing to ensure the safe and prosperous future of their business and the Industry as a whole.

It was extended from 9 to 18 holes in 1992 on a tight footprint; the putting green was also rebuilt in 2004.

Facing north and high above sea level, the course is one of the last in the area to see the start of the growing season and one of the first to feel the grip of winter.

Steve aims to treat the course as one and offer the most consistent playing

Calders & Grandidge are proud to be sponsoring the Fencing News Fencing Championships at the Driffield Show for the fourth year running. The event is one of the highlights of the show, and we anticipate another keenly fought battle for the title this year. The competition is open to all contractors, so why not give it a go!

Calders & Grandidge Sales Representatives Rick Windley and Angie Ward will be on hand during the show to offer help and advice on all your fencing and requirements. We are able to quote and supply materials for both domestic, commercial, equine and agricultural uses, as well as offering a range of garden and landscaping products. We are also able to offer nationwide delivery for all our products.

All of our softwood products are available in a variety of treatment options, dependent on the end user. Osmose Naturewood is the ideal choice for domestic and commercial use, available either in green or brown, with the option of Black Dip to provide the look of creosote if required. For agricultural and equine use, we always recommend creosote as livestock tend not to chew creosoted timber, which helps to extend the working life of your fences.

Over the past 18 months we have experienced a significant increase in

demand for creosoted fencing products as contractors and end users have begun to focus more on longevity and life time cost.

On a very sad note we are sorry to have to report that our Business Manager, Ian Chalmers, has been diagnosed as terminally ill. Ian has been with the company for over 28 years and is both well-known and respected throughout the treated timber industry and has developed close working relationships with many of our customers in both the fencing, track and pole markets. TIMbER TREATMENT

Treaters, as well as specifiers and users of treated timber rely on the relevant British Standard, BS 8417:2011. ‘Preservation of wood. Code of Practice’, to provide information relating to species choice and the degree of protection to be afforded for different end uses, including in and out of ground contact.

The chemical supply companies, in an effort to increase the performance of treated timber, are currently promoting the incising of timber, that is passing timber through a machine that make incisions, (fine slits or pinholes), in its

surface, which will improve the uptake and penetration of preservative, the incisions are typically 6mm deep. The process is not new and has been in regular use in many countries, including America and Canada, for many years, but to a lesser extent in continental Europe. The use of this process to improve the penetration of preservative in species which are resistant to impregnation is considered to be potentially beneficial for species such as Spruce, to enhance its long term performance in ground contact and has been the subject of

TIMbER TREATMENT GOING FORwARD

discussion for some time and is now being considered for other less permeable species, such as Douglas Fir and Larch, which are species widely used in ground contact. Research carried out by BRE in 2005 described the opportunities and benefits of incising timber. Field trials of incised timber which BRE started in 1972 gave very positive results and showed that incising can markedly improve the service life in ground contact situations.

Traditional incising machines were used for square or rectangular section timber, but incising of round sections can also be done, although machines for this process are less common. In theory, incising should offer advantages, but field trial data would be of value in confirming this for our commonly used species. The WPA is currently considering this option.

Representatives of the treatment industry recently viewing this equipment, where testing is being carried out to see

what levels of chemical loading can be achieved, were shown examples of both heartwood and sapwood penetration prior to any long term testing trials. Of course, this additional processing has a cost; the equipment, associated handling and additional chemical costs were discussed and it was felt that an increase in the order of approximately £10 to £14 per M3, in addition to the current cost of treatment, was likely.

Will the marketplace take this on board? Who will drive this? Will it be the consumer, the large retail store or the treatment industry?

ACQ has been market leader in Copper-organic alternatives for CCA since 1988. In fact, Viance has customers that have used the same ACQ product continuously for over 25 years – a fantastic vote of confidence! This long term commercial experience together with field tests in all climate zones and ecosystems means that as a Viance customer you can be sure you are using a reliable product fully backed-up by long term theoretical, practical and commercial expertise.

Today’s UK fencing market demands Quality Scheme Approvals and Viance’s field staff are frequently asked to give advice on how to achieve the best treated-wood performance whether it is imported or home-grown timber. By utilising our experience of timber treatment and listening closely to our customer’s needs, we can offer a range of measures to help with the

ultimate aim of achieving consistent performance.

Viance’s expertise in colourant chemistry has recently helped several sawmills overcome some long-standing technical challenges. Packs of brown fencing boards can be difficult to treat uniformly and this problem isn’t always noticed until after the packs have left site. Also, some brown dyes may vary in shade even before they are sold-on to an end-user. Fortunately, ACQ Brown Colourant has successfully resolved these problems at a number of sites. In each case, the improvement in colour quality and consistency has increased customer satisfaction and subsequently increased value – something we all strive for!

Viance’s engineering division (plant design and build + servicing and maintenance) together with our laboratory and pilot plant testing facilities all contribute to the professional service package you would

Easipost15 has been developed using an innovative incising process, which delivers chemical impregnation 6mm into the post to penetrate the heartwood as well as the sapwood. This has enabled BSW to take the performance level of easipost15 beyond BS8417.

The bespoke engineering system developed by BSW in-house, guarantees the performance and durability of the Use Class 4 fence post. The system has been developed and tested extensively over the last 2 years by BSW experts to ensure its success in both preservative retention and penetration with British species. By taking a commonly used North American technique that has stood up to the rigours of the American market, BSW has employed an innovative approach to the technique of incising

to fit British grown timber and its preservation.

easipost15 builds on the success of BSW’s market leading ‘easi’ range, which offers construction, fencing and decking products, as well as sleepers, pallets and packaging.

Alex Brownlie, Director and Head of Business development at BSW Timber, said, “The technological advances driven by BSW in the development of easipost15 are an industry game-changer. After two years of detailed, patient development and testing, we’ve perfected our own engineered system to get the best out of British species while employing the proven Tanalith E chemical preservative from Arch Timber Protection Lonza as part of the system.

“The launch of BSW’s ‘easi’ range is the result of increased investment during the last few years in our UK mills, allowing for increased capacity, improved customer service and the ability to provide a wider product range. ‘easi’ has become of the UK’s market leaders, only five months after its launch. We’re confident that the quality and durability of easipost15 will continue to build on this success.”

Lonza Wood Protection’s DRICON fire retardant treatment is protecting the oak lining used in a beautiful award-winning home at Boreraig, on the Isle of Skye. The building, inspired by the blackhouse, a traditional style of Highland architecture, was designed by architect Neil Stephen of Dualchas Building Design to reflect the local landscape and heritage and to be a quiet and restful retreat for its Buddhist owner.

The house, facing a lochan and with views across the island, is lined throughout with oak-faced ply vacuum-impregnated with the DRICON fire retardant, creating a clean, minimal and attractive finish. The oak-finished panels spring open to reveal concealed shelves and storage areas to maintain the minimalist feel of the design. The wood was supplied by the timber contractors and shipped to Lonza Wood Protection for pressure-treating with the DRICON

treatment before being returned to the site, ready for use.

A water-based fire retardant applied by vacuum-pressure impregnation in factory-controlled conditions, Lonza’s DRICON product is the only BBA-certificated fire retardant treatment for timber and plywood. It also offers a high level of resistance to humidity, vital in the weather conditions found in the Scottish Highlands.

Dualchas Building Design architect Mary Arnold-Forster, who also worked on the project, said, “We specified the use of Lonza’s DRICON fire retardant treatment for the project as it meets the required building regulations, and is easy to work with. We have used DRICON on other projects, including on birch-faced ply for a community hall on the Isle of Raasay and a house on Scotosay, Outer Hebrides. It’s a very

good product, and we prefer it to the fire retardant coatings that have to be applied on site because of its controlled application, assured durability and no need for further maintenance. We have recommended it to a number of other architects.”

TIMbER TREATMENT

The Wood Protection Association is lobbying the Government about the threat to business viability and jobs in the timber treatment industry posed by implementation of the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED).

The IED will see a permit to operate system expanded from creosote and organic s solvent treatment plants to include plants using waterbased preservatives. IED comes into effect for new plant installations from 7 January 2013 and 7 July 2015 for all existing operations.

WPA has written to Business Secretary Vince Cable setting out the significant steps and regulation compliance already implemented to minimise the impact of timber treatment operations on the environment and calls for action by Government on four key points.

1. Base the requirement for permits on business operating hours and not a theoretical 24 hour production capacity.

The treatment capacity that dictates whether a permit must be applied for

under IED is set at 75m3. This threshold capacity is based on theoretical 24-hour operation of the plant. WPA contends that this is unreasonable and should be based on the actual capacity achievable in the operating hours of the business.

The general legal obligation to prevent pollution of soil, air and water in the operation of a treatment plant applies now and will continue to apply to plants whose operators can demonstrate that the threshold is not reached. Using the operating hours proposal above would reduce the number of plants requiring permits but not the legal obligation to minimise the impact of their operations on the environment

2. Where plants do exceed the 75m3 threshold but conform to the WPA Code of Practice for such installations, they should automatically fall into the “low-risk” category for the annual permit subsistence charge. This would acknowledge the work done by this industry over many years to minimise the potential impact of its operations on the environment and compliance with current strict regulatory requirements.

3. Ensure those who regulate IED will be trained to understand and recognise good practice in the wood preservation industry.

Defra has told WPA that our Code of Practice for Timber Treatment Plants (as enclosed) could form the basis for regulating IED compliance in the UK until the EC best available technology document is published. Training of regulators in the use of this Code and the recognition of good practice is seen by our industry as essential to ensure consistency and fairness in implemented a permit system across the UK. The WPA is prepared to take on this training role subject to relevant government agency agreement and support.

4. The National Highways Sector Scheme for preservative treated wood (Scheme 4) requires that all timber fencing and sound barriers for highways contracts is produced in accordance with the WPA Manual of Industrial Wood Preservation and British Standards, by ISO9001 quality accredited firms that have employees suitably qualified in Industrial Wood Preservation. WPA played a key

role in helping Highways Agency raise quality standards many years ago but other publicly funded bodies that buy or influence the specification of treated wood eg Environment Agency, Defra, Forestry Commission have not, as of yet, seen fit to follow this best practice example.

As a means of getting best value for taxpayers’ money, it makes sense for all publicly funded bodies that buy or influence the purchase of treated wood to have a clearly defined quality and standards policy as part of their contract requirements. WPA would like your departments help in bringing this about. As with National Highways Sector Scheme 4, we are prepared to help develop the guidance. For an industry facing the potential consequences of IED, positive action by your department in support of this objective would be well received.

The Wood Protection Association (WPA) announces publication of a new Manual of Industrial Wood Preservation- Specification & Practice. The Manual is designed for use not only by those specifying or buying treated wood but also by those whose job it is to produce it - timber treaters.

First published in 2007, the specification guidance found in the WPA Wood Preservation Manual is called up as best practice by many UK standards setters like NBS, NHBC and Highways Agency but the technical guidance on the treatment of wood and panel products has now assumed a significant role in the drive by timber treaters to deliver quality assured materials.

Commenting on the significance of the 2nd edition of the Manual, WPA Director Steve Young says, “This WPA Manual complements the revised British Standard for wood preservation, BS8417, published in March 2011. It provides specification good practice for designers and buyers and is the backbone of the Benchmark quality scheme for treated wood.”

Benchmark is a third party quality scheme, operated by WPA that verifies compliance with the processing procedures established for a specific commodity and its end use

which differ from plant to plant. “Meeting the requirements of BS8417 is the key to customer satisfaction and the WPA is the only technical and advisory body with the expertise to help treaters achieve this.” says Steve Young who confirms that a principal objective of the WPA is to raise the status of treated wood in the UK and help maximise the use of wood as the sustainable material of choice. “In this respect, the new WPA Manual makes essential reading.”

The WPA Manual of Industrial Wood Preservation – Specification & Practice, 2nd edition, April 2012is available now. It is supplied in an electronic pdf format on CD and costs £45.00 within the UK which includes postage. For details of how to place an order and pay contact: [email protected]

TIMbER TREATMENT

It is widely recognised that the average lifespan of a whitewood timber post or stake is not what it should be and the timber treatment industry is somewhat at a loss to cost effectively solve this problem. Longerlife Posts Ltd believes they have the solution.

Longerlife Post Dip is an emulsified bitumen liquid that is applied to the post or stake either by dipping or brushing. Once on the timber the liquid then hardens, forming a protective barrier between the post and the soil. This importantly keeps moisture and organisms out, thus preventing rot and fungal attack. Longerlife Post Dip not only offers protection either side of ground level but also complete underground protection, eradicating capillary action, a process where moisture is drawn from the bottom of the post upwards via the heartwood, giving organisms the right conditions to attack the timber.

The benefits of Longerlife Post Dip are similar to those seen years ago with the use of a creosote and tar mixture. Posts and stakes were often soaked in

this mix before installation. Longerlife’s Post Dip is completely environmentally friendly and does not leach into the ground.

Tests to date have been positive showing that even when driven into stony ground the bitumen remains virtually intact and the post will continue to season naturally. This allows modern treatment chemicals to fix properly into the drying timber and avoids any potential leaching of the chemical. It would appear to have major benefits to producers of whitewood stakes and posts by giving the timber a similar life span, at less cost, than kiln dried & pressure treated redwood.

More cost effective and adaptable than traditional wrap systems, Longerlife Post Dip covers approximately 3 square metres per litre. The liquid can be applied in any condition above 5 degrees centigrade with a drying time from 2 hours to 48 hours weather dependant. Suitable for use with all soil conditions & types and most softwood species of timber. It is recommended to always use pressure treated posts or stakes.

USING A MODERN SOLUTIONTURNING bACk THE YEARS OF TIMbER PROTECTION USING MODERN SCIENCE

Longerlife Posts Ltd have added pre-dipped stakes and sawn timber posts to their current range of Postsaver and pressure creosoted products, all of which are aimed at extending the life span of a timber post or stake. Longerlife are confident in their post dip and therefore offer a 10 year guarantee across their range of dipped stakes and sawn timber posts.

The dip is available for delivery in various quantities depending on customer

requirements. They offer as little as 5 litres for infrequent users, up to 1000 litres for professional producers & stockists of fencing stakes & posts who wish to ensure a reasonable lifespan for their products. Painting and dipping kits are also available for the infrequent and the professional user.

Garden and landscape timber products specialist M&M Timber is offering garden centres throughout the UK a chance to make the most of a predicted holiday-at-home trend this year with an unbeatable discounted range of top selling lines.

Customers opting for what is being promoted as a ‘staycation’ by national tourist boards are likely to give the garden and leisure industry a welcome summer sales bonanza as they make the most of their gardens, says M&M Timber.

More people will be enjoying the ‘feel-good’ factor of spending their holidays at home and in the garden. And with a promised heat wave the prospects for garden centres this summer are looking very good indeed.

Top of the company’s bargain list are the trellis panel ranges, which sold well over 50,000 units last year. Categorised as ‘Good’, ‘Better’ and ‘Best’ the range offers a choice of standards, from the more conventional Malvern trellis, and the exceptionally strong Ludlow lattice, to the top-of-the-range Thames Privacy lattice manufactured from smooth planed softwood with mortise joints. All are offered in a range of sizes and are pressure treated for longer life.

Bulk buy packages on the trellis ranges offer big savings that beat even regular promotional prices, and include M&M Timber’s distinctive new free standing merchandiser free of charge. Purpose designed to store and display the trellis panels at the point of sale, the merchandisers are sturdily constructed using pressure treated timber for long life and feature an eye catching header board.

Ever popular grow troughs and veggiebeds are also eligible for the special bulk buy promotional savings, as is the company’s traditional Cottage

Arch, generally acknowledged as the best selling arch in the UK.

“We are anticipating another record year for sales of our garden and leisure products,” says Nigel Poyner, Managing Director of M&M Timber, who reports

that production at the company’s Clows Top sawmills has not slowed over the winter months. “Now, more than ever, the household garden is the centrepiece of sophisticated outdoor entertainment for family and friends. Our extended range of quality timber products reflects the huge demand that now exists for innovative new ideas to compliment the perfect garden.”

Earlier this year M&M Timber launched a new range of wooden merchandising and staging units, designed to enhance the display of garden centre plants and products. Midlands based Webbs of Wychbold, one of the country’s leading garden centres, was amongst the first to place an order and have now taken delivery of several hundred merchandising units to replace their existing display stands.

For two full days in September, Timber Expo will be the hub of the UK timber industry and after its extremely positive and successful launch last year is set to be an even bigger and better event.

Timber Expo 2012 will take place again at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry on the 25 & 26 September 2012 with added floor space and an exciting programme of timber-related activity – including seminars, networking and Meet The Speaker areas, technical tours and

demonstrations all taking place within the main exhibition area.

With more than 5,000 visitors expected, including architects, specifiers, engineers and contractors plus central government departments and local authorities, all four corners of the timber sector will be represented for all attendees to promote, learn and experience why timber is the number one commercially available low carbon construction material.

CONNECT COLLAbORATE CONSTRUCT TIMbERExPO 2012

Timber Expo will reveal the widest and most comprehensive display of applications for timber within the built environment – new technologies, new products and new business. All alongside the accompanying seminar programme that will include some of the leading industry thought leaders discussing issues pressing this dynamic sector.

Timber Expo has radically overhauled its programme of seminars for 2012, to make learning an even more central component of the exhibition. In 2012 all the seminars will be FREE and focused in the three theatres in the main exhibition at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena. And the theatres themselves will also be part of the communication and education process, comprising a UKSIPs theatre, a timber frame design from Frame Wise and a third, soon to be announced timber-based build system.

While a number of seminars will be led by show sponsors, the majority will feature independent speakers, chosen for their knowledge and expertise in specific, topical areas alongside case-studies of projects drawn from the 2012 Wood Awards shortlist. There will also be a special Timber Innovation Gallery including successful projects and products from the Timber Expo/TRADA-sponsored TTJ Innovation Award 2012.

Issue-based seminars will cover a range of topics, including the government’s flagship Green Deal, Part L amendments, the EU Timber Regulation, building information modelling (BIM), designing to Passivhaus and Fabric First principles, environmental product declarations (EPDs), CE marking and the EU Construction Products Regulation. Similarly wide-ranging will be the building product presentations including

timber connections, SIPs, modified wood, decking and cladding, fixtures, adhesives and sealants.

“When we launched Timber Expo last year, we had no doubt that the time was right to seize the day and to give the timber industry its own show in the UK,” says Event Director, Loretta Sales. “This year the show is going to be a really vibrant and buzzing place to be. We are already 75% booked-up on a show that will be 50% bigger than last year. I think exhibitors and visitors are going to see a huge difference this year compared to last.”

The huge range of products on show will include timber frame, SIPs, Glulam, LVL, cross-laminated, timber protection products, flooring, cladding, decking and mouldings, doors and windows. The exhibitor list includes Platinum Sponsors, International Timber/Pasquill Timber Engineering, alongside major sponsors and industry experts including, Accsys Technologies, Balcas Timber Crown Timber, Coillte, ECC Timber, Lonza, James Latham, Frame Wise, Norbord, Osmose, PEFC, Senior Architectural Systems, Woodbridhe Timber Wiehag plus many others.

Since June 1998 the FCA has held an Annual Charity Golf Day raising a total to date of £101K for Charity.

This year the FCA have listened to the “non Golfers” and added some thrilling activities into the event to enable them to participate.

The event will take place at De Vere Belton Woods in Grantham on Friday 29th June and will include Golf, Karting Grand Prix and Paintballing. Of course

this is not exclusive to male participation as the FCA are sure there are a number of ladies who can give the men “a run for their money”!

Recognising this, the Glee team will be holding a special one day ‘workshop’ to help exhibitors, both new and old, learn about the opportunities available to them to have a profitable Glee 2012.

Exhibitors will have the choice of either a morning or afternoon session, taking place at the Midlands based

Solus Garden & Leisure, Droitwich on Thursday 14th June. The Exhibitor Workshops will be led by Glee event director, Nick Davison, as well as the show’s marketing & operation teams. With 2012 seeing both the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics being celebrated, organisers of the Epworth and District Agricultural Show are gearing up for yet another summer of honouring country heritage, traditions and values, and the green fingered community will be helping to the fly the festive flag.

Now in its 66th year and taking place on August bank holiday Monday (27th), the show will once again play host to the increasingly popular horticultural tent, amongst other attractions such as Showjumping, Mountain and Moorland Ponies and Shire Horses, as well as dog shows, livestock classes and trade stands, to name but a few.

“The show exists to celebrate our country’s heritage so it’s really important to us that it still continues to do that, and the horticultural tent

is the perfect place to demonstrate to our children and grandchildren exactly how food is grown, husbanded and nurtured before being inserted into packaging,” explains Dave Hayes, Chairman of the Epworth & District Agricultural Society.

Open to societies and associations such as Gardening Clubs and Women’s Institutes, as well as families and individuals, the tent will play to host to classes where prize money and trophies will be up for grabs.

promotional opportunities, such as taking part in Glee’s dedicated news release, features and preview programmes. Glee’s marketing initiatives will also be explained, highlighting key opportunities such as on-going promotional literature, web banners, and the VIP campaign to promote their participation in the show.

The workshop will also highlight additional benefits such as online opportunities at gleebirmingham.com. Glee’s onsite service providers, Melville, will also be on hand to talk exhibitors through some of the cost effective solutions to stand build and design.

Nick Davison, Glee show director said, “This will be the fourth year that we will run the workshops and every time the value of them is clear. The exhibitors who do the best at Glee are those that have planned and promoted themselves as much as possible in the lead up to

the show. Recognising this we have developed these workshops to arm them with the tools to really make the most of their time at the show, meaning they can benefit from a significant return on their investment both now and throughout the year ahead.”

With a hectic match schedule and training pitches and a busy academy, Derby County’s Head Groundsman Andy Croft has his work cut out keeping the turf in top condition at Pride Park, home to the Championship side since 1997.

Andy has been using British Seed Houses to supply his seed for just over a year.

“When I came to the club in 2006, I carried on with the seeding programme that my Predecessor Mark Robinson had used,” he explains. “But after discussions with Paul Moreton the Technical Sales Representative at British Seed Houses I decided to give their mixtures a try – they have a good reputation and are competitively priced.”

He first trialled A999 Rescue mix, a blend of A20 Premier Ryesport and Annual Ryegrass for winter repair and was immediately impressed. “I wish I had ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos – I only have them from before, but the difference was dramatic,” he says.

Andy then decided to use the company’s seeds for his regular overseeding programme – goal mouths have seed applied on a regular basis throughout the season, and major renovations start in late April on the training pitches, with a start date of 23rd May for the stadium giving a tight window before the autumn fixtures begin.

Pitches are stripped and cultivated before seeding, with 21 bags of A20 Premier Ryesport from a 30 bag delivery applied,

leaving nine for in-season repairs at the stadium, and 100 bags on the training pitches.

Combining Vesuvius, Lucius, Carnac and Cadix Ryegrasses, A20 Ryesport gives excellent recovery after matches, and the attractive, dark green colour and high shoot density needed for televised sport.

The Academy at Moor Farm is seeded with 30 bags of A30 Rapid Sport Renovator mix, which draws upon the qualities of Cadix and Carnac to produce a hard wearing sward to cope with the busy schedule for up and coming footballers.

“We do everything we can to give the grass the best growing conditions possible, from mowing with a rotary in the winter to keep weight off the pitch to applying fertiliser every 14 days. But there is no doubt that using the best grass mixtures available is also key to producing pitches of Championship standard,” he says.

When many businesses are making cut backs and downsizing, it is refreshing to see that some companies are not only surviving the current economic climate, but are actually thriving. This could not be truer of Clarke Fencing, who have come a long way since starting life as a sole contractor business in 1984.

As well as having run as a successful fencing contractors business for 28 years, Clarke Fencing have just opened their own depot, based in Stowmarket, Ipswich, selling a wide range of fencing products.

David Clarke began his career working in the construction industry and it was not long before he realised that he wanted to be his own boss. “I left the construction industry after deciding to work for myself as a fencing contractor,” David explains. “Within 2 weeks of doing this I had received a lot of contracts for domestic and agricultural fencing work. After 2 years I was employing 7 other contractors and running 3 vans and the business has continued to grow from there.” Now David runs the business alongside his two sons, Jason and Kevin.

Although still carrying out domestic and agricultural contracts, a large majority of Clarke Fencing’s contracts are now from national companies, including developers. “I found that during the winter months business was quieter and so decided to look into carrying out fencing contracts for housing developers. Now a lot of our work comes from housing developers and we also do a lot of work for local councils. We are an approved contractor for National Housebuilders.”

Working in partnership with Jason and Kevin, both sons have had a large part to play in the recent business advances. “You could say they have pulled me into the 21st Century! As well as opening our first depot, we have also just launched our new look website, including an online shop which Kevin has redesigned. Working alongside our depot, the online shop enables us to offer our products to a wider market.”

The depot, which features a purpose

built warehouse, office and workshop at Stowmarket Business Park, stocks a variety of timber fencing products supplied by Ellis Timber, Ellpro Timber and Goldstar Fencing, as well as concrete, electric and horse fencing products. Also available are decking materials, wire supplied by Moncaster Wire, plywood and sheet materials, garden furniture, summerhouses, sheds and much more.

David, Jason and Kevin are keen to make sure that customer service is a top priority at the depot, making sure that all customers receive not only the very best products, but also the very best service. “Customer service is key. We want people to be able to come to our store, whether they are contractors or new to building a fence, knowing that they will be given the correct advice to do the job properly. Having installed fencing for nearly 30 years, we understand many of the problems people face and can offer our advice and experience to customers.”

Having only been open a short while, already several trade accounts have been opened by contractors and Clarke Fencing are keen to continue to build accounts with local contractors. The business is also in the process of employing 4 new members of staff, taking the total

workforce up to 15.

“One of our main aims whilst expanding the business was to create local employment. We believe it is important to support local shops and business and we shop locally whenever we

can. In this climate it is fantastic to be able to provide jobs for people in the area. Barclays Business Banking have been a great support throughout the whole process and it is reassuring to know that banks are still helping businesses to grow.”

Having had such a busy year already, I had to ask if David, Jason and Kevin had any more big plans for the rest of 2012, “We have a few ideas in mind, but our priority at the moment is to concentrate on the new depot. I think a holiday is in order before any more big changes!”

Grange Fencing have just completed the relocation of their northern factory to the Humber Business Park in Paull, only moving a few miles from their previous position at Alexandra Dock in Hull. To celebrate the move to the new site, Grange Fencing held their official opening on 13th April, at which Lord John Prescott was the guest of honour.

The new premises, which covers 6.2 acres, include a large L shaped factory, a storage warehouse and a large external storage yard. Lord John Prescott, who represented Hull East as the Labour Member of Parliament from 1970 to 2010, unveiled the new plaque and cut the ribbon to the factory before meeting staff and taking a tour of the new site, even getting ‘stuck in’ by operating one of the panelmaking machines. Later he spoke about the factory, saying, “I have been very impressed with how Grange has transformed the site. This business is continuing to grow and providing local employment which should be celebrated.”

Speaking about the new site, Managing Director, Duncan Hill, says, “We are pleased to have been able to relocate on Humberside, keeping manufacturing in the area. It is important to Grange

that we retain our existing workforce, skills set and a factory that is close to where our Baltic timber lands in the country and where our northern customers are based. We have spent eight years building up our operations

here and we are very proud of our team in Hull, which keeps going from strength to strength.”

The Grange story is all about service. This sounds easy enough – just aim to deliver every order on time and in

full – but two factors conspire to make this a challenge: the domestic fencing market is seasonal and it is also hugely influenced by the weather. While the first of these factors is predictable and can be planned for, the second cannot.

Therefore every winter, stocks equivalent to several hundred miles of fencing are built up at their two storage yards. In addition, large quantities of key raw materials are accumulated along the length of the supply chain: at supplier’s yards, at ports and at Grange. This investment in stock enabled Grange to supply all orders promptly and in full throughout the period following the storms of early January.

The normal delivery lead time for Grange is 3-4 working days and their target is to deliver 99% of all orders on time and in full. No-one can afford to wait for an overdue delivery. Time is money, especially for fencing contractors.

In addition to timber fencing, Grange’s products include a full range of timber garden products designed to help their stockists achieve add-on sales. Last year, the range was widened further to include domestic metal fencing and gates. These are available in a number of styles, and non-standard lengths of fencing and special width gates are available to order. All metal products are doubly protected having been both zinc plated and powder coated. The aim was to make domestic steel fencing more affordable by mass-producing a limited number of styles and by always carrying stocks so that stockists and contractors never have to wait.

“I joined Grange Fencing in 1978, initially running the contracting side of the business. I took over as managing director of the whole company in 1985 and it has been growing more or less year on year,” Duncan explains. Today Grange Fencing supplies almost 3,000 miles of fencing a year from their factories in Shropshire and Paull, with an annual turnover of over £35 million.

EFIA

April seems to have come and gone in a flash - or at least with flash flooding as most of you will have experienced out on site during the past month. The weather seems to be getting more erratic as does the economy. The government finally admits that the UK is in a recession (as if we all didn’t know that already) and yet all they can talk about is pasties and phone hacking - when are they going to actually do something useful for UK small businesses?

The world seems to have gone mad (as my old man used to say) – nations uprising in revolution and dictators overthrown by Blogging and Tweeting. Better I suppose by the keyboard rather than the sword, but it comes to something when society and our businesses and livelihoods are at the mercy of the social media, and our every move, purchase, browse and text is being logged by some organisation or other.

It is ironic then after that rant that I am communicating now in electronic format by Email. In my defence, whilst something of a computer nerd myself twenty years ago, I now find myself way behind with the new social media revolution and playing catch like most of you (come back pen and ink . . . all is forgiven). Sadly, the internet isn’t going away anytime soon, so EFIA is biting the bullet in getting social media savvy and developing a number of IT support initiatives to help guide its members through the necessary evils of the IT revolutions, e.g. training sessions and workshops and competitively-priced websites.

We now have a live Twitter Feed on the EFIA Home Page www.efia.co.uk where you can view regular postings by Alison and our social media team.

The regular changing content on the Home

Page will enhance the EFIA website’s position in search engine results, which means that the chances of your company being found and offered work through the EFIA site (Find a Member) will increase too.

Alison and our media team are posting Tweets several times per day and we are gradually Following and attracting a number of Followers both leading to interesting online discussions about fencing and related industries. If any of our members are using Twitter, please let us know and we can Follow each other and possibly do some reTweeting, as mutual support and linking on these social mediums helps to promote each other’s organisations. Follow us here https://twitter.com/#!/efiafences

We are also in the process of developing a Member Links page on the EFIA website, where we will provide an internet web link

to your own company website via your company name/logo, and we strongly urge that you ensure that the EFIA Logo (linked to EFIA website) is on your own company website Home page too.

A major boost to production capacity of feather-edge fence boards is set to create further growth for a leading independent home grown sawmill.

Northumberland based A&J Scott supply sawn home grown timber to customers in the fencing and outdoor products sectors. During 2011 the company’s long term investments in increased production capacity helped it to achieve its best ever sales output.

Now the company has installed state of the art System TM Opti-Feed and Opti-Stacking systems to provide a massive boost to its production of feather-edge and thin fence boarding through its 7-headed Stenner multi-rip saw. The new system automates the in-feed of timber into the saw as well as the stacking of the finished product.

The company stands to benefit from a significantly faster throughput than it could previously achieve with manual feeding of the saw, allowing it to supply new additional volumes of feather-edge boarding to the UK market at competitive pricing levels.

Managing Director, Robert Scott, said, “We are delighted with the performance of the system so far and excited at the extra capacity this will provide. We are determined to strengthen our product range to further support our expanding customer base”.

Manufacturers of Timber Drying Kilns for over 30 years

4 x 50m³ kilns recently installed for Thomson Sawmills by Kiln Services Ltd

When we last visited Brian Thomson, Managing Director of Thomson Sawmills based in Felthorpe, Norwich, the company had just invested £4 million installing a new automated sawmill, a mechanical stacking and sorting line and a residue system, as well as a new treatment plant. With plans to invest a further

£1.5 million since our last visit, we caught up with Brian to see what is new for the business for 2012.

“We now have a total of 4 kilns, which were supplied by Kiln Services Ltd,” says Brian. “The first two were in operation from October 2010 with the second two being installed in May 2011. Each kiln has the capacity of 50 cubic metres, which means we now have an overall capacity to kiln dry 200 cubic metres of timber at a time.”

Thomson Sawmills dry timber to the 28% moisture standard, drying at a very slow, conservative rate to insure that

once dried the timber remains straight and uniformed. Once the post materials are dried, they are branded with a heated stamp, showing the company’s initial and the year in which it was dried which Thomson Sawmills keep a record of.

Having installed 4 new kilns, Thomson Sawmills have also introduced a Weiss Biomass Boiler from Germany to run the kilns. The boiler, which was installed by German technicians in October 2010, has a 1 mega watt output and is powered by burning woodchip. “Only 0.005% of the fuel comes out as ash, which shows how efficient the Weiss Biomass boiler is. It is also very low

maintenance, running 24 hours a day only being shut down twice a year to be cleaned and serviced. Since the boiler and kilns have been installed we have been very busy. We have spare capacity on the boiler to heat another two kilns, which is something we are looking into for the future. In August we are also having a new two door treatment vessel, two metres in diameter delivered from Tweddle Fabrications.”

Based on a site of 70 acres, Thomson Sawmills produce a wide range of fencing and landscaping timbers. As well as expanding their machinery, Thomson Sawmills are also now working with

Viance to treat their timber.

“All our timber is treated by Viance,” Brian explains. “Viance supply superior products with consistent colouring, which holds for over a longer period of time. We chose Viance as our timber treaters 18 months ago, after they came highly recommended from their other users.”

Thomson Sawmills also benefit from the consistent testing of chemical strengths on site from Viance.

All of Thomson Sawmill’s timber is sourced from England’s forests with the majority from East Anglia and a small amount from Yorkshire forests. Complying with FSC and Controlled

Wood standard and procedures, they sell a wide range of timber products such as fence posts and panels, decking and gates.

As well as timber, Thomson Sawmills also stock a wide range of items including concrete posts and gravel boards supplied from FP McCann and wire and mesh

supplied from McArthurs Group.

Brian established the sawmills 25 years ago and now employs 40 staff on site, many of who have been with the company for more than 15 years. Brian’s two sons and daughters Jamie, Oliver, Laura and Carly also work for the business asDirectors of the company.

Open to both the general public and contractors, Thomson Sawmills pride themselves on delivering a professional service, supplying customers with top quality fencing timber, no matter what order size. As well as on site collection, Thomson Sawmills also offers delivery on small orders locally throughout Norfolk and bulk deliveries across the country.

Having heavily invested in their future, Thomson Sawmills look set to continue to expand within the timber industry. We look forward to our next catch up to see what Brian and the team achieve next!

Jas P Wilson held two fuel production demo days at their South Scotland site at Dalbeattie recently. Wilsons are national manufacturers and suppliers of a wide range of quality equipment for the firewood market.

Around 600 visited over the two days and were well entertained with around 120 tonnes of wood to go at.

Stars of the show were the Lasco

cone splitters which can be fitted to excavators, digger loaders, telehandlers and tractor loaders. 22 different models are available, 4 were on show.

Many buyers have access to large timber which until now has been too awkward to break down economically. The unit fits on most machines with a quick hitch and 2 way oil flow. A Doosan 14 tonne machine was breaking around 10

tonnes per hour into handlable sizes which in turn greatly adds value.

Other processing systems were on show including various firewood processors from Austria manufacturers Posch.

Log storage and drying systems were demonstrated with a special palletised netting system for drying, storing and transportation.

Other machines were working including kindling machines, large splitters and cross cutting saws.

For the fencing guys the Posch peeler pointer was making a lovely job of some spruce posts.

LANDSCAPING

A RHS medal winning garden is being relocated to a permanent home within a local resident’s association garden thanks to a partnership involving local residents, a primary school, a council and Brett Landscaping.

The garden, entitled ‘A Growing Community’, was designed by Llandaff North Residents’ Association Chairman and amateur garden designer Stephanie Wilkins, and awarded a Silver medal at this year’s RHS Cardiff Flower Show.

Andrew Gill from Brett Landscaping’s Love Your Landscape programme said, “Over recent years, poor housing design and high density developments have claimed many of our traditional green spaces, leaving limited opportunities for people to gain access to and enjoy open urban spaces.”

“Our Love Your Landscape scheme works towards re-engaging communities with their open spaces. The Llandaff community garden is a perfect example of how we can all not only gain from well design open spaces, but benefit by working with great people like Stephanie and the team at Cardiff Council, all sharing a common goal – creating beautiful, valuable open spaces which we can enjoy.”

Stephanie Wilkins said, “I am very excited to have been awarded a Silver medal at this year’s RHS Cardiff Flower Show and am very grateful to the key sponsors who have contributed to the garden. I designed the garden so that it would be easy for residents and pupils of Hawthorn Primary School to maintain, but at the same time provide colour and interest for everyone to enjoy as a community.”

Stephanie works tirelessly for the community and wanted to provide an area where residents could come together to socialise, and which helps to reduce anti-social behaviour. With this in mind, Stephanie designed a robust garden which features a noticeboard, a seating area on which to rest and socialise, a paving area for easy access and planting for both colour and fragrance.

Andrew Gill finished by saying, “I would urge communities across the country to engage with schemes such as Brett’s Love Your Landscape, to seek support from third parties such as local merchants, and to lobby their local councils on how well designed open space is an important part of community cohesion.”

Hales Sawmills in Shropshire continues to expand the areas of supply of their fencing products. Current contracts include Highways Specification Post and Rail to sites on the M4 in South Wales, M6 in Cheshire, Wrexham, M5 in Gloucestershire and along the M4 corridor towards London with specialist type fencing going to Perth in Scotland.

The increase in work has required the company to recruit extra staff to be employed at their site near Market Drayton in North Shropshire to ensure the increased volumes are prepared in time to meet customer requirements. This includes a much increased demand for Acoustic Screens, pre-fabricated at their site and loose materials for construction on site.

Hales are currently supplying different customers in Kent, South Wales, Cambridge and East Midlands along with other contracts just about to start nationally. The company has also been asked to design and supply specialist Acoustic Screens for Cross Rail in London

and has supplied airport sites at various locations. Other areas that continue to grow are housing developments and screening of industrial sites to reduce the noise levels to meet European legislation requirements.

Hales Sawmills are currently in the process of testing new designs of barrier to be able to offer an even wider choice of systems used by the Highways Agency, National House Builders and local authorities and has recently been specified by Network Rail to be used on

specific sites close to track side.

Hales will be exhibiting at this year’s Fencex on 17th October at Stoneleigh, where they will have on show a full range of their products including gates both standard and custom designed in both softwood and hardwood, all of the fencing panels they manufacture together with examples of acoustic screens, round fencing stakes and sawn timber.

For people who call the office, they will often speak to Phil Parton, who despite recently becoming a first time father also finds time to mountain bike and is taking part in this year’s challenge of the downhill race at Fort William – Hales wish him well and trust he returns in one piece.

This paper is number five in a series intended to inform the current debate around England’s woodlands. However, the papers can also be applied to the rest of the UK. This paper outlines some of the threats currently facing England’s conifer forests, explains the wide range of benefits they provide beyond the associated industry, and explains why they need special consideration. It also puts forward ideas for action.

Caroline Harrison, Confor’s England Manager, explains, “These papers are written in an accessible style to contribute to the current debate.

Together, they provide a taste of some of the key issues that forestry faces, as well as the benefits it provides. The Independent Panel on Forestry is in the final stages of its deliberations and media interest will rise again when it publishes its recommendations to ministers in the summer.

“England’s broadleaved woodlands are rightly lauded and their benefits well understood by most, but the importance of softwoods is rarely appreciated. They support an industry, from nurseries and timber growers, through forestry contracting and management businesses,

to timber harvesting and processing companies, which is the backbone of forestry in England, yet many people seem to be unaware of their existence and significance.

“It is vitally important that the media, public and decision-makers consider all relevant interests. This series of papers seeks to fill some of the gaps that have been evident over the last 18 months. We hope they will be widely read.”

Leading UK fencing company Tornado launched its latest innovation, Torus, at this year’s Royal Cornwall Show (7 – 9 June 2012). Marking a significant investment in machinery and the creation of several jobs across all three Tornado sites, Torus utilises cutting edge technology to bring the latest advancement in fence design.

The new product incorporates continuous horizontal and vertical wires, joined with a high-pressure bonded knot, which provides four-way movement resistance. This Quad-Lock design makes Torus ideal for even the most extreme environments, and with mesh sizes as small as 50mm x 50mm it can be used for any agricultural, infrastructure or equestrian application.

Speaking about the launch, Tornado’s Managing Director, Kenny Campbell comments, “We’ve led innovation in the industry since the 70s when we introduced high tensile fencing to the UK. And our new Torus design goes even further. As well as being incredibly

strong, the Torus knot is small and unobtrusive and the small mesh sizes create a wide range of new product options.

The result – an aesthetically pleasing fence which is incredibly strong. It’s a fantastic addition to our range.”

“It’s a real testament to the hard work

and expertise of every single person at Tornado that, even as the economy continues to flatline, we’re in a strong position to create new jobs and continue our programme of investment into new products like Torus.”

As with all Tornado products, Torus undergoes no fewer than 14 rigorous tests and inspections and is manufactured

to BS EN 10223 standards to ensure the best quality fence possible.

A range of course maintenance equipment from SISIS is helping Lutterworth Golf Club get its turf in superb condition. The 18-hole parkland course, just south of the Leicestershire market town of Lutterworth is set in rolling countryside and the club is one of the longest established in the county, having opened in 1904.

Head Greenkeeper Jon Barr explains that a programme of scarification has been put in place to keep thatch at bay, “There were seven fairways that were seriously affected by thatch and they had become difficult to play as any water just could not get through the thatch causing large areas of fairway to get squidge and die out.”

Jon was familiar with the SISIS range from his previous role at Cosby Golf Club and had used the Rotorake scarifier on the greens, but the SISIS Veemo offered a unique opportunity to tackle the problem on the fairways.

The tractor-mounted heavy duty scarifier features a pivoting rear section and support wheels at the front to float over the turf, while tungsten tipped

hook blades with variable spacing cut effectively through the thatch. Locking micro adjusters on each unit allow the depth to be set precisely to the required level.

“There are not many scarifiers that are productive enough to cover fairways while coping with the undulations,” he points out. “We have been trying to remedy the thatch since 2005, but have to go slowly so that the course remains in play. The aim is to take thatch out once a year and we are

really getting on top of it now.”

Lutterworth GC has also invested in a pedestrian Sisis Rotorake 600 de-thatcher /linear aerator, used every six weeks to keep the surface open on the greens.

A Javelin Aer-Aid 1500 air injection aerator has also made a big contribution to improving the condition of the greens. This unique aerator introduces a blast of air at the bottom of the tine penetration to increase the fissuring

effect and improve the effectiveness of aeration.

Jon comments that all of the Sisis kit is durable and well made, and that he receives back-up ‘second to none’ from the company.

“Any parts are easily available and the Sisis team are always willing to help out,” he says.

Resigap Ltd, Essex has launched the first spacer specifically designed for paving. This unique and innovative product is now available nationwide from Homebase and Toolstation.

Gapfast paving spacers provide a rapid method of installation to all flag paving, giving accurate and consistent 10mm joint widths. In addition they have been designed to stay in place (unlike a tile spacer) thereby making paving stronger. Once the pointing is complete the product is invisible and will not rot or disintegrate. If the pointing subsequently fails the paving flags will remain in place, substantially reducing the repair costs.

The product was first presented to Tony McCormack, Pavingexpert.com to obtain feedback from the paving guru. The feedback was very constructive; “these paving spacers are a simple and effective tool to assist the paving

Osmose have recently published a review document on this topic, giving guidance and information on four techniques with the potential to enhance the treatment properties of UK grown Sitka Spruce and so improve its performance when used in ground contact (Use Class 4) applications.

The techniques reviewed include –

• Incising

• Optimisation of pre-treatment drying

• Butt End protection systems

• Treatment process modification (eg. Oscillating Pressure)

Any such technique can only be effective if used to complement the selection of an appropriate impregnation process, to suit the species and intended end use, and correct installation of the final treated product.

In particular, Osmose has been working closely with interested customers on the

McVeigh Parker have just won a prestigious contract for one of the largest egg producers in Southern England by offering an unrivalled poultry netting for over 50,000 free range birds.

After months of discussions, McVeigh Parker along with their client designed a specific mesh pattern and design in the original X fence wire netting that exceeded all expectations.

The project had the long-term aim of doing away with the electric fence lines, which required high maintenance, and install a fence line that required very little attention in its lifetime.

The mesh not only had to contain poultry it had to prevent predators entering, The strength of the X Knot in X fence prevents badgers from forcing entry between the mesh, which had been an issue with other such products, this then allows entry for foxes.

There was also a need for security with the overall design standing 1.8m above

X fence the product in question won the contract due to the fact the wire could be tensioned up to six to seven meters apart. English Heritage was not only able to cut there labour and material costs, more importantly they greatly reduced the soil disturbance required on this Cambridgeshire site of great archeological interest.

McVeigh Parker X fence a wire netting you can bank on…

Once again the 24% stronger knot used in the manufacture of X fence won a recent contract for ADAS. The project required a netting to protect and reinforce embankments, strong

enough to withstand the aggressive nature of badgers burrowing. Once again the X fence won the contract due to its alu/zinc coating especially suitable for a wire that was to spend its life in ground contact. The Alu zinc coating offered a greater service life, which was less prone to premature corrosion.

The netting was held in place using McVeigh Parker U Pins and clipped together with triple life netting clips.

ground level and 600mm buried this made it both hard to scale or burrow for humans or predators.

The location of the fence line was also a consideration in what wire to use, the very wet soil conditions required a wire that could withstand this harsh environment especially as 600mm was buried, the alu/zinc coating offered the answer, lasting up to three to four times longer than normal galvanized wire.

With 26 lines at 50mm intervals the contractor opted to crimp the joints to save time and create an exceptionally strong smooth continuous netting whilst fixing to the stakes with double barbed staples.

The fence is only as good as the stakes supporting it, the client in this case opted for locally grown seasoned chestnut which should offer a good service life.

Speaking after the Annual General Meeting of the UK Forest Products Association, held at the House of Commons on 30 April, Lord Taylor of Holbeach, Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), addressed UKFPA Members and guests during lunch and said that having recently assumed responsibility for domestic forestry in England, he had been “very impressed by the forestry and forest products sector and the people he had met in the industry” and was looking forward to seeing more of the industry in the coming months.

The large number of UKFPA Members and guests, drawn from across Great Britain, were welcomed to the House of Commons by Rt. Mrs McGuire has been a good advocate of the domestic forest products sector and in her address she emphasised the importance of making the best possible use of wood and wood products. Mrs McGuire also

highlighted the industry’s concerns about the threat of displacement of wood from the processing sector to large-scale wood fired electricity generating plants, which are being supported by Government subsidy.

Gavin Davidson, (Iggesund Forestry (UK) Ltd), President of UKFPA, also addressed Members and guests and hoped that the Government would take the opportunity of the review of forestry in England, currently being undertaken by the Independent Panel on Forestry, to “revitalise forestry in England and rise to the challenge by laying the foundations of a legacy which includes a large public forest estate, with increased emphasis timber production, for which future generations will be grateful”. The Independent Panel on Forestry had stated in its interim report that “a flourishing and commercially viable domestic forestry sector, which provides at present around a third of the UK’s woods needs, principally in construction, packaging and garden products, is economically essential for the health of the UK economy“. The

Panel’s final report is expected to be published in early Summer 2012.

David Sulman, Executive Director of UKFPA said, “We were encouraged by Lord Taylor’s comments and we look forward to working with him and his officials at this very critical time for the forestry and forest products sector in England.”

At the AGM, Gavin Davidson was re-elected President of UKFPA, with Rod Gordon (John Gordon & Son Ltd) re-elected Vice-President and Richard Palmer (A.W. Jenkinson Forest Products), re-elected Junior Vice-President.

Research shows that fence posts fail as a result of ground decay or rot which occurs at the ground line section of the fence post.

For this destructive process to be successful all that is needed are a few simple ingredients, wood, moisture, oxygen, decaying organisms, nutrients from the soil and a temperature above 10ºC and away you go.

At depths over 200mm below ground level the conditions for any serious form of decay are greatly reduced if nothing else because the temperature is generally well below 10ºC and oxygen and nutrient supply is restricted.

By keeping the causes of decay out and the preservative in at the vulnerable ground line, the causes of early post failure are prevented - as simple as that or is it?

Postsaver composite sleeves have been in production for nearly 20 years and are backed by an investment of over £1 million in testing & development.

In the early days the product was a simple single layer barrier, but with advances in material technology and meltable liner formulation and other developments we now produce a highly engineered composite product. Postsaver sleeves are quickly and easily applied with anything from a simple blow torch on site up to a full blown semi-automatic machine. Postsaver works across a wide range of timber types, copes with even the most extreme cracks in the post, can be driven in to the stoniest ground, concreted in place and is compatible with all timber and preservative types and is non-toxic.

POSTSAvER STOPPING THE ROT

Recent full and comprehensive independent field test data demonstrates the clear effectiveness of Postsaver in preventing ground decay over a period of nearly 12 years. The standard controls samples without Postsaver were severely decayed with some failures whereas the Postsaver sleeved samples are in virtually perfect

condition, a testament to Postsaver’s effectiveness in extending fence post life.

Manufacturers of Timber Drying Kilns for over 30 years

Over the last three years, the fencing sector has become an increasingly important market for Kiln Services Ltd. With many companies installing kilns to ensure they obtain the correct penetrations and chemical loading by drying down to fibre saturation point prior to treatment. This helps to

ensure that the preservative impregnation standards of BS8417:2011 can be achieved and in particular where the minimum desired service life of 15 years defined in the Standard is required for components destined for Use Class 4 (ground contact) applications. The lack of preservative

penetration and loading is almost always related to a high mosture content in timber prior to treatment.

When drying species that are classed as “resistant to treatment” such as spruce, care should be taken not to dry below the fibre saturation

point; a final moisture of 33% usually provides the best results. Drying programmess should be modified to ensure maximum temperatures do

not exceed 65º centigrade, with relative humidity no lower than 55%. These programmess will extend the drying time but avoid the outer layers drying too quickly leading to pit closure and a resistance to penetration.

Although there is obviously a cost in removing a proportion of the

moisture content prior to treatment, this is minimal when compared with the replacement and installation of a failed product, but just as important,

the possibility of customers turning to other less sustainable materials due to a misguided lack of confidence in timber, for those companies

producing waste wood by products, the renewable heat incentive also opens up new opportunities for reducing drying costs. For more

information please contact Kiln Services Ltd.

Having launched their new range of cantilever gates just over a year ago, Metropolitan Estates are going from strength to strength. As well as promoting their new RHINO range, the company have also refurbished their current factory and opened a second factory to cater for the range’s high demand.

The family run business, based in the heart of the British manufacturing industry, has over 40 years experience within the steel industry. As well as cantilever gates the RHINO range also includes automatic traffic barriers, tubular fencing, mesh and swing gates. Metropolitan Estates also manufacture bow top.

“Our aim is to provide our customers with affordable, quality products,” explains Henry Atkinson. “For years automated cantilever gates have always been way over budget for most industrial and commercial applications, but in actual fact we have managed to produce a sliding gate at a very affordable price without sacrificing quality or safety”

Another key issue in regards to automated gates is safety. “Safety is a huge issue for the industry, when we began the R & D phase of our gates 18 months ago we realised then that this was

not something that could be taken lightly, so we approached FAAC who are a global leader in gate automation and safety to supply us with all of our automations and safety equipment, and as a result of this partnership we feel we are now manufacturing one of the safest automated gates on the UK market today.

Working with contractors, the RHINO automated cantilever gates are offered with a fitting service to make sure any onsite and safety issues are resolved. Once the contractor has installed the base and power supply Metropolitan Estate’s automation engineers will arrive onsite to fix the gate to the concrete base, install a loop system if required, and any entry system that is required.

Their main aims are to produce the best fencing, made to the highest standards from the best available raw materials.

The machines that make the fencing have been uniquely modified to ensure that all fencing is made with centreless cores. This means the fence rolls easier without snagging as it unwinds and the whole of the roll is usable. The fencing is easier to use and there is less wastage saving time and money.

The fence also has deep crimps to further speed up erection by acting as a spring. This will also protect against climatic elasticity; so the fence will not slacken off, whatever the weather.

The wire that is used in manufacture of the fencing and barbed wire is GUARANTEED to last at least twice as long as wire made to BS EN 10224-2 Class A.

There is also a longer life guarantee on the wire used in their HT Fencing with 4Life wire used on both the top and bottom strands. This gives an even longer life in the wires that bear the brunt of weathering and wear and tear.

In all, they believe that they make consistently the best quality fencing from the highest quality of wire.

Uniquely in their approach to the market, ArcelorMittal believe in reaching the marketplace through retailers and distributors offering local supply. Local suppliers are able to offer other essentials such as posts, fixings and the other tools of the trade along with advice and that important friendly ear when required.

Fencing is about a lot more than buying wire direct from the manufacturers with minimum order quantities, delivery leadtimes and other constraints. It is the long held belief of ArcelorMittal Sheffield that by working closely with partners they can supply a high quality product at a competitive price to the market.

Picturesque Bodnant Estate, situated in the Conwy Valley in North Wales, is far from an every day destination for equipment produced by Daltons Wadkin. However in June 2011 Joinery Shop Manager, Andy Cull, and Malcolm Parry-Jones travelled to Nottingham with a view to acquiring woodworking machinery to fully equip a brand new joinery shop, to replace an existing facility in an old mill which had been outgrown by the requirements of the estate.

The Bodnant Estate has over 1000 acres of woodlands and intends with its management plan to use more of its own timber in the production of making products.

The impressive new shop situated by the banks of a tidal creek from the River Conwy is entirely clad in hardwood grown on the estate and provides a spacious clean environment within which to work. It has been expanded in order that it can offer its services outside the estate to both the business and private sector for quality hand made bespoke items. The Estate Joinery has made bespoke items for the National Trust at neighboring Bodnant Gardens including trellis and pergola bridges, all made as per their original features.

wELSH CONNECTION FOR DALTONS wADkIN

Joinery is also required for their own use which includes the production and fitting of a diverse range of products from hand rails to foot bridges, signs and fencing, to say nothing of the maintenance of the many farms and holiday cottages which come within Bodnant’s responsibilities.

The estate had a strict budget which Daltons Wadkin were able to meet by providing a selection of factory serviced equipment including Band Resaw, Sliding Table Panel Saw, Spindle Moulder, Chisel Mortiser, Crosscut Saw, Single

End Tenoner and Bandsaw and all of these were delivered and installed by Daltons Wadkin engineers in the new Bodnant joinery shop last October.

Project Manager Stephen Dixon is delighted with the new equipment which has enabled Andy and Malcolm to produce joinery to the standard required and given them an opportunity to expand activities and the use of the prolific home grown timber.

Francis Dalton commented “We were delighted and privileged to be chosen

as suppliers to the Bodnant Estate and it was a pleasure to visit the new shop and see what is being achieved in this beautiful part of Wales.”

Shufflebottom has become the first UK company to achieve CE certification through BM TRADA for the manufacture of agricultural steel frames.

CE marking for structural steel is not currently compulsory in the UK but after 2014 it will be mandatory and non-compliance will be a criminal offence.

CE marking is essentially a ‘passport’ that allows goods to pass freely throughout Europe without manufacturers having to carry out further testing or certification in order to prove that their products meet the legal/statutory requirements in each member state.

As one of the market leaders in the manufacture and erection of steel-framed

SHUFFLEbOTTOM SCORES Uk FIRST wITH CE MARk

agricultural and industrial buildings, the Llanelli-based company wanted to be the first to successfully gain the standard.

“We are very proud of our achievement,” said Director Alex Shufflebottom. “We are seen as the market leader in the agricultural market and the CE Mark reinforces these credentials. It will enable us to move into markets that we haven’t previously operated.”

BM TRADA has been working closely with membership organisation RIDBA (Rural and Industrial Design and Build Association) and SCI (Steel Construction Institute), to develop a factory production control manual and design protocol members require to comply with CE marking.

The manual and protocol help RIDBA members demonstrate both compliance with the Construction Products Regulation - which is mandatory after 1st July 2013 - and that the buildings are fit for purpose under BS EN 1090 ‘Execution of Steel Structures and

Aluminium Structures’.

It was through RIDBA that Shufflebottom was introduced to the certification body. “We were very impressed with the professionalism of BM TRADA in all their dealings with us.”

“For the last six years we have been working hard to improve the levels of our welding, getting individuals tested and gaining ISO 9001 certification in 2008. Although these weren’t specifically towards CE marking, the combination of all these initiatives contributed heavily towards it.”

Gaining the certification is an important step for Shufflebottom. “In order to gain CE certification, there were a few areas that we needed to fine-tune. But we knew that it was important for us to achieve this certification as official recognition of the levels to which we were working.”

Doosan Infracore Construction Equipment has sponsored the 2012 UCI BMX World Championships held at the National Indoor Arena (NIA) in Birmingham which were held from 24-27 May 2012. As part of the sponsorship package, Doosan supplied a fleet of Doosan and Bobcat machines to build the temporary track in the NIA for the Championship races.

Paul Rowlands, Marketing Manager at British Cycling, said: “We are delighted to have worked in partnership with Doosan on this year’s BMX World Championships, the last major event in the UK before the Olympics. The machinery supplied by Doosan was integral to the building of the track for the races and worked flat out in the week before the Championships.”

The fleet of equipment from Doosan included Doosan DL200 and DL250 wheel loaders, a Bobcat T190 compact tracked loader, Bobcat E45 and E80 compact excavators and the new Bobcat TL470 telehandler.

The machines were used by the contractors, surfacing specialists, P. Phillips & Sons, based at Bridgwater

DOOSAN AND bObCAT MACHINES bUILD TRACk FOR bMx wORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN bIRMINGHAM

in Somerset and BMX track builders, Clark & Kent Contractors from Market Drayton in Shropshire. The contractors were working on behalf of the partnership organising the event, comprising British Cycling, Birmingham City Council and UK Sport.

Measuring 310 m in length, the track incorporated 8 m and 5 m starting ramps to accommodate the different classes of BMX rider taking part. To lower the weight on the floor, the track had an underbase of layers of wood

pallets and plastic pipes which created voids which were overlaid with Terram membrane. This was then covered using the Doosan wheel loaders with a limestone dust mixture which was pushed and moulded by the Bobcat compact excavators to form the shapes required on the course.

Event Manager, Phil Heselwood, who was responsible for the scheme for building the track, said, “The Doosan wheel loaders and Bobcat telehandler have been very important, especially

in the first stages of the build as we had so much material to move in the early phases.”

James White Fencing and Gates is a new business that specialises in installing fencing and gates, gate automation systems and access control solutions throughout Hampshire and the surrounding area. When Director James White wanted to invest in a new tracked post driver her turned to Protech Machinery and could not be happier.

“We ordered the Protech P22 Contractor which is the ultimate post driving appliance,” explains James. “It features a hydrostatic cable control which enables one man to maneuver the machine into position from post to post and drive the post into the ground all from the same standing position.”

The P22 features a 350Kg weight, a 2 foot side shift, mast tilt back and side and a telescopic mast, enabling posts up to 3.6m in height to be used in conjunction with the machine.

“Because of its compact design and fold away capacity the P22 can squeeze

into places other machines just don’t fit. The tracked drive system will also conquer gradients that need to be sent to be believed!

“On the machine’s first job the P22 was hitting 2.1m by 150mm by 75mm posts 900mm into the ground at a rate of one post per 60 seconds. The long, wide tracks and light gross weight means the machine has a low ground pressure

footprint, this was a massive bonus on this particular job as in the days prior to starting the contract we had experience a lot of rain. Our Land Rovers were getting stuck in and leaving ruts behind, whereas the P22 left no trace. Best of all the P22 pulled one of the Land Rovers, and trailer, out with ease.”

Having been so impressed by the time and effort the Protech P22 saves, James is

now planning to fix a compact Quickfencer to the front of the machine which will allow James to roll out and strain 300m of stockwire at high speed.

Peter joined the company 16 years ago as Sales Estimator. He was quickly promoted to Buyer, then Purchasing Manager before progressing to Operations Manager, then General Manager. He is now responsible for all operational aspects of the business – from purchasing to production, through to despatch and has made some notable improvements.

Marcus joined the company 15 years ago as Assistant Contracts Manager in their supply and fix division, which operates in the North East of England. After quickly displaying

potential, Marcus was promoted to Contracts Manager before moving into their national supply only division, as Sales and Marketing Manager. He is now responsible for sales of all fencing products to existing customers and for developing new business.

Peart Fencing has been trading for some 90 years now, but only became a limited company in its own right two years ago when the holding company (F Peart & Co Ltd) sold the fuel distribution division of the business. Colin Stead, Managing Director, has therefore decided to appoint Peter and Marcus to the board of Directors to assist in the strategic development of the business and to formalise the Peart Fencing Ltd board of directors so they meet their fiduciary obligations.

PEART FENCING LTD ANNOUNCE NEw ADDITIONS TO bOARD OF DIRECTORS

We caught up with Colin, who commented, “Marcus has done a particularly good job of promoting the fact that we’re not just Manufacturers of Palisade, but also Mesh systems, Railings and Pedestrian barriers too, but there’s still more to be done”

Colin concluded, “Peter and Marcus

have earned their positions on the board and I am confident that they will both add talent and experience to ensure the future of Peart Fencing Ltd. I wish them both the best.”

Having given 22 years service, Nick Darking has been rewarded with promotion to General Manager of Surrey based Charterhouse Turf Machinery (CTM).

CTM are the UK arm of Redexim, the Dutch manufacturer of many leading types of groundcare equipment including the iconic ‘Verti-Drain’ aerator.

Nick, 41, began working in the workshop in 1989 and has moved up the sales tree through being a Demonstrator; Territory Manager and latterly Sales Manager.

Herman de Bree, Sales & Marketing Director of Charterhouse Turf Machinery, said of the appointment, “Nick has been our ‘man on the ground’ for over 22 years now and it is fitting that he steps up to General Manager status. His solid understanding of our unique product range has helped the company maintain its market leadership in Aerators, especially large scale ones that we have pioneered.”

In any spare time that Nick has he likes to play a round of golf and take in as many music concerts as he can, although he says, “Now having the responsibility of being General Manger

will limit free time, but will be worthwhile as we project CTM into the next phase of its history.”

At the beginning of the year, Spun Gold, the production company behind the popular ITV daytime programme The Alan Titchmarsh Show contacted Grange Fencing to see if they could feature Grange products to use as part of their gardening segment.

The Dragon Pergola was selected and made its first TV debut with great reviews and much interest was generated through the Grange website and also through the Grange enquiry and Sales lines.

Since then Grange products have become a fairly regular feature on the show and to date Grange has supplied fence panels and an assortment of planters, much of which have formed

part of the set for many weeks.

The Metpost brand also enjoyed its first airing on the show as spikes and bolt downs were used to show how to repair panels during the winter months.

Grange Fencing are proud to have their products associated with The Alan Titchmarsh show and as the year progresses Grange are looking forward to working more closely with the team by providing a further range of quality, stylish, and innovative products.

BSW Timber’s easipost has been awarded the Benchmark quality assurance certificate by the Wood Protection Association (WPA), becoming the first spruce post to achieve this highly regarded accreditation.

The WPA Benchmark scheme verifies that a commodity such as a post is treated to a standard that will deliver a minimum service life of 15 years. Certification means that easipost will now be identified with labels that carry the WPA Benchmark logo to reassure customer confidence with a third party assessment of the ability of this newly launched product to perform.

easipost has been developed using an innovative incising process which delivers chemical impregnation 6mm

into the post to penetrate the heartwood as well as the sapwood. This process has enabled BSW to take the performance level of easipost15 beyond BS8417 – and provide a 15-year warranty for the product.

Alex Brownlie, Director and Head of Business Development at BSW Timber, welcomed the award. He said, “This is a real stamp of approval for our newly launched easipost and the direct result of our innovative approach to incising timber.”
