Stewart House officially opens Felsted’s new Pre-Preparatory School officially opened this year. The building, named Stewart House, is designed specifically for four to seven year olds and is surrounded by characterful multi-sensory outdoor play zones. The building was opened by Old Felstedian, Mr Andy Stewart and local renowned author Nick Butterworth was a welcome guest, officially opening the Stewart House library. His well-known illustrations, from the Percy the Park Keeper series, have been used to name each classroom, and also appear on the main stairwell. The Olympiad was sponsored by Woop Studios, the graphic designers behind the magic of the Harry Potter films, who exhibited a wonderful display of their well known collective noun designs. Felsted Hosts European Round Square Conference Felsted hosted the European Round Square Conference and Britain’s inaugural Youth Round Square Conference in November. This high profile event welcomed His Majesty King Constantine II of Greece and delegates from across Europe, and included a mini Model United Nations Conference, hosted by iPads. Felstediansings inOlympicOpeningCeremonyU6 Esme Smith showedoff her talent by singing toa worldwide audience offour billion at the OlympicOpening Ceremony,accompanying acclaimedpercussionist Dame EvelynGlennie and Alex Trimble,lead singer of TwoDoor Cinema Club.They welcomed theOlympic Flame into thestadium singingCaliban’s Dream – asong written byUnderworld’s RickSmith, Esme’s father,to mark the finaljourney of the Olympicflame before it came torest in the stadium.

Felsted Model United Nations Pupils from as far away as China, Morocco, Switzerland and Germany, includingsome Preparatory School children, attended the conference hosted by Felsted.Pupils debated, discussed and attempted to solve many real world problems,with several Human Rights issues on the agenda. With Conflict as the theme, Mr Graham Dossett from Amnesty International was the guest speaker,providing an invaluable insight into many of the topics discussed throughdebate. Felstedians enjoy a busy calendar of public speaking and debatingevents throughout the year, including a visit to Geneva and the Hague.

Rebeka Géczi experienced alife changing exchange toMarkham College in Lima forsix weeks, in which time sheexperienced the culture,gastronomy and variety oflandscape that Peru has tooffer, including MachuPicchu. She also volunteeredwith Prosoya in Oxapampa, asmall village near the jungle.Prosoya works with childrenwho come from difficultfamily backgrounds.Rebeka’s exchange partner,Gabriela Castro, visitedFelsted in the Spring.

George Hitchcock and BenJewell visited two differentschools in Germany this yearand Albert Meister, Ben’sexchange partner, stayed inElwyn’s during the SummerTerm. Cassie McGaffin fromSouth Africa was hosted bySara-Jane Horne, and JessieFawcett from MowbrayCollege, Australia, spent thefirst part of the Summer Termin Follyfield House. More andmore pupils are taking up theopportunity to exchange withour Round Square partnerschools around the world.

Sunset Boulevard Research Trip in LAA small group of cast members from Felsted’s production Sunset Boulevard,travelled to Los Angeles to undertake research for the show. Whilst in Hollywood,they visited Paramount Studios, the set in which much of their production is staged.

Scott of The AntarcticMr Martin Williams, the UK representative of theNew Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust, spoke topupils about the expeditions headed by CaptainScott and Sir Ernest Shackleton of the Antarctic. Hediscussed the legacy of these expeditions and thelinks to Felsted, following the School’s sponsorshipof a Husky for Scott’s expedition many years ago.

InternationalDinnerFelsted hosts an annualInternational Dinner incelebration of the diversecultures found within theSchool. Students enjoycelebrating their nationaldress and presenting theirculture to their fellowstudents.

Winning EconomistsU6 Economics students won the regional heats of theBank of England ‘Target 2.0’, a competition whereteams must assess the state of the economy and theinflation outlook before setting interest rates to achievethe inflationary target of 2%.

The Felsted Olympiad The Felsted Olympiad provided a unique programme of professional and schoolevents to celebrate the olympic year.The Olympiad began with an evening of multicultural performances, including adramatic flag ceremony, in which 25 countries were recognised, accompanied bySamba drumming and Jazz. Dances from different cultures, such as France and

Africa were celebrated and performed by dancers fromFelsted’s Dance Academy, In Motion. Zimbe! was performed to the three hundred strong audienceand was introduced by the composer himself, Mr AlexanderL’Estrange. A mixture of staff, Old Felstedians, pupils, parentsand members of the community combined to form the choirand accompanying band.

School Olympic DramaSenior School pupils performed Teechers by John Godber, a play set in acomprehensive school, which required the seven actors to assume variousconstantly changing roles. Pupils from Courtauld House, Yrs 7-8, staged aproduction of High School Musical which involved over 45 pupils and a fullband. The Amazing Maurice was staged by Yrs 5 and 6.

CommunityDramaFelsted Community Players stageda production of A MidsummerNight’s Dream, which not onlyincluded pupils and staff fromFelsted, but also parents, governorsand friends of the School.

ProfessionalOlympicDrama Several professionalproductions were held atthe School during theOlympiad. Scamp TheatreProductions staged the one-man play, Private Peacefulby Michael Morpurgo. Thestory told the life of PrivateTommo Peaceful, a FirstWorld War soldier andproved educational, emotive and thought-provoking for all those in theaudience. The Boy withTape on His Face alsoperformed to the delight ofthe student body. Hisimaginative mime show,with a large prop bag androles of masking tape, washugely enjoyable to watch.

Julian Lloyd Webber magicFelsted also had the privilege of a performance byJulian Lloyd Webber. He gave the most wonderfulrecital, accompanied by the talented Pam Chowenon the piano, on his Barjansky Stradivarius cello(dated c.1690), with pieces by Bach, Fauré andBritten. In The Half Light, written by his fatherWilliam, was also performed with a finale of the epicCello Sonata by Rachmaninov. Earlier that day,Julian had performed with Felsted pupils andmembers of the Norwich branch of the musicalcharity ‘In Harmony’, of which he is Chairman. Julian is also patron of Felsted’s state-of-the artMusic School.

Neil Hannon delightsNeil Hannon of The DivineComedy performed in February,having spent an hour during theafternoon with a small group ofpupils, all of whom are keensong-writers. Neil performedsongs from his newest album,entitled Bang Goes theKnighthood, and also included

renditions of older classics, including Everybody Knowsand, of course, National Express. We welcomed manyfirst time visitors to Felsted from as far afield asGermany!

OlympicOperaThe Olympiad culminatedin an ambitious operaticproduction of Gilbert andSullivan’s Trial by Jury,performed by both Seniorand Preparatory pupilsand members of staff. Theaudience enjoyed asummer picnic whilstbeing entertained.

Woops of Art at FelstedThe Woop Art Exhibition, the largest to have been held at Felsted, attracted artenthusiasts from all over the county. Woop, the designers responsible for the HarryPotter films, paraded their animal based, alphabetical prints. The art featured someof the lesser-known collective nouns for animals, such as an aurora of polar bears oran embarrassment of pandas. The prints celebrated the use of collective nouns in afun, but also educational, way.The Woop Design Team inspired a competition for Felsted Preparatory Schoolpupils to produce acollective noun for agroup ofFelstedians. Thefinalist artwork wasdisplayed on thenight and includedthe followingwinners; A Blast ofFelstedians, A Splash ofFelstediansand A Family ofFelstedians.

Bury Project CreativityIn Yr 9, all students begin their time at the SeniorSchool by taking part in the Junior Leaders Diploma, aholistic programme designed to give a taste of thewide range of activities on offer. The Bury Project is apart of this Diploma. Students are asked to make acreative piece of artwork, which is then displayed atThe Bury to be judged. This year’s theme was centredaround the Olympics, and the winning pieces wereused to help to launch the Olympiad at the openingevent, Zimbe.

Drumming Success for Felsted BrothersPeter Rayner, L6, has drummed his way into the final of Young Drummer of theYear 2012, a competition his older brother, Richard, won in 2009. Both brothersalso reached the category finals of BBC Young Musician of the Year for 2012, withRichard being awarded 2nd place and being interviewed at Felsted by the BBCin February. Richard is now studying percussion at Guildhall School of Music andDrama, and continues to perform in his band, FranKo and has supported McFlyon tour.

Mosaic to mark the JubileeFelsted pupils assisted in the creation of a mosaic to markthe Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. All pupils and staff had theopportunity to arrange and glue the pieces in place,following the design drawn up by Mrs Alison Pierse andher assistant Laurie Plant. The finished mosaic is nowproudly mounted outside Stewart House.

First ever School Production of Sunset BoulevardThis year’s Drama production of Sunset Boulevard wasperformed to a sell-out audience over four nights andenthralled the audience. It was the first time a school oramateur company have ever staged the production,showing off Felsted’s Drama Department to the higheststandard. It proved the most technical production DrCharles Lee has ever directed,in terms of music and the setdesign.

■ Bertie Blackwell made his FirstClass cricket debut for DurhamMMCU, taking 3 wickets. Bertiewas Captain of Cricket in 2009.

Sarah Brook (Felsted 2006-2008) graduatedin Psychology fromExeter in June and iscurrently training to be ajournalist. During hergap year, Sarah visitedMalawi to volunteer at a local orphanage, where she sawpeople living in some of the world’s worst conditions.Two years later Sarah returned, accompanied by hermother Janet, to see what she could do. Sarah has sincedecided to set up a project to provide and care for agroup of 356 street orphans. Having recruited a board oftrustees to oversee the project, Sarah has named theproject ‘Sparkle Malawi’, and the orphanage, completedin June 2012 has two classrooms, a bathroom, officeand an outdoor kitchen, and provides all the necessarycare and facilities for these children to live and enjoy life.For more details please visit www.sparklemalawi.co.uk.

English Giant Slalom Champion 2012Kieran Norris, 17, is the EnglishChampion in Giant Slalom for hisage group and has accumulatedenough FIS (FederationInternationale de Ski) points to beselected to represent the SkiTeam England U-19 team. Hehas spent the summer training inLa Parva, Chile, and competed ina number of South American Cupraces. Whilst competing in fourraces at the U-18 level, he haswon two and finished 2nd in theothers. As a Sports Scholar,Kieran follows an individualeducational programme,supported by his Housemaster and Tutor to ensure he keeps on top of his studies.When at Felsted, he is provided with an individual fitness and nutrition programmeto maintain and improve his fitness levels.

Rugby experts provide pre-season training expertisePaul Turner (ex-Gwent Dragons’ coach and ex-Walesplayer) gave a daily training session during the U16spre-season training. Four Felsted Boys qualify forIndependent Schools NationalRugby Squad Rory Hartley, James Hardy, Phil Walsh and Rob Dennis wereselected for the National Squad in their domestic matches.James Hardy, Rob Dennis and Rory Hartley, who captainedthe match, scored a try, and was named Man of the Match,saw their first game against Scottish Exiles. The secondmatch was against the Welsh Exiles in which only Phil Walshplayed, scoring two tries, and was named Man of the Match.Their third match, against the Irish Exiles saw both Phil andJames play, resulting in Phil being approached by the IrishExiles management, and invited to join the team. All threeplayers were selected to tour with ISB to Rome. Felsted wasthe only school to have four boys selected.

Tennis SuccessFelsted tennis is onthe up with muchsuccess across allage groups. Teamsare playing in regularregional leaguecompetitions, inaddition to schoolmatches. Playing allyear round is reallymaking the difference,with pupils using thenewly re-surfacedcourts at thePreparatory School under floodlight during the winter months.Three of the Preparatory School’s Tennis teams werepromoted following an impressive season. The U11 FelstedMixed Green Team won their Halstead League. The U13Girls’ Tennis Team were promoted as Champions toHalstead League A Division, whilst the U13 Boys’ werepromoted as Champions to Division 1, following an unbeatenseason for both teams.

Sir Alan Haselhurstinspires Lower SixthSir Alan Haselhurst, MP for Saffron Waldendelivered a ‘Question Time’ structured talk, allowingthe L6 to ask many probing questions. Thesecovered a range of topics from the NHS and theOlympics, to becoming an MP and the infamousexpenses scandal.

Year 10 World of Work DayYr 10s had a taste of the future, and what they would haveto achieve academically in order to reach their goals.The morning consisted of three sessions; a talk by MrRyan Ibbotson, Business Manager, Barclays Bank, whichfocused on making the most of opportunities and how TheFelsted Diploma should help pupils’ CVs stand out. Hestressed the importance of work experience and the needto research Sixth Form subjects. Speed Careering thenenabled the students to meet thirteen professionals, mostof whom were Old Felstedians, from a variety of vocations;Royal Navy lieutenant to a teacher of Geography. This wasfollowed by a career and university talk from members ofstaff, in which pupils undertook a survey to determineappropriate job paths.

OF Oliver Balch leads IB Language Master Class Oliver Balch(Journalist andOF) offered U6IB students aninsight into thevariousmethods usedin producingnon-fiction textsand adaptingwriting styles tosuit different audiences. The students reviewed anddiscussed Oliver’s own writing from his blog, travelogue,articles and even his thesis. Oliver also spoke to L6 abouthis experiences of being a travel journalist and offered thestudents some useful career advice.

Magic MumbaiEight senior pupils travelled to Mumbai in October halfterm to volunteer with Magic Bus, a charity founded byOF Matthew Spacie MBE, which aims to take a millionchildren from childhood to livelihood. Working withmarginalised children from Indian slums, the volunteershelped empower the children through sports andactivities. It was a highly emotive experience for thestudents who went, and has left a lasting impression.

CCF NewsFelsted CCF hasparticipated in anumber of activities thisyear, including a visit toRAF Wyton, where 12RAF cadets flew andtook the controls of aGrob 115E ‘Tutor’ fixed wing aircraft. The CCF Army section visited Fingringhoe Ranges,Colchester, where the pupils fired live ammunition andcompeted for the honour of becoming the ‘ChampionRifle Shot’. They also became ‘Trained Cadets’. Cadets were put through their paces as the CombatCadet Squad over a 24 hour period. A nine-person teamthen competed in the EX Combat Cadet Competition,involving 44,000 cadets, testing all the military skills. Cadets also attended a RAF 24 hour exercise to RAFHonington, where they undertook first aid training,visited the armoury and completed the assault course.130 cadets were also on parade for the annual FelstedRemembrance Sunday Service. Charity Day The League Captains andLeague Charity Captainsfor the PreparatorySchool showed wonderfulefforts on the Leaguestalls as part of CharityDay. The children paid £1to attend the non-uniform day, held stalls and carriedout activities which raised £766.49 for their Leaguecharities and £435.48 for Sport Relief.

MontSense win Essex Enterprise AwardsMont’s House Young Enterprise business teams,‘MontSense’, had their Business Plan judged to be thebest in Essex. The team hand-made scented candleswhich were presented in recycled, quirky containers. Sam McArdle, James Taylor, Jamie Baker and GeorgeSmith were winners of the Central Essex round and,presented at the Essex Final. They were awarded BestBusiness Plan andthe award for SocialResponsibility. Allof Felsted’s L6participate inBusiness Enterprisewithin their Housesand makedonations to theirchosen charities.

In HarmonyYr 10 pupils raised £2,500 for In Harmony, a localmusic charity, through a sponsored Grade 1-a-thon.Pupils, staff and parents took up the challenge oflearning an instrument from scratch to take Grade 1within six months!
