    FIRE SAFETYBE PREPARED

According to a study conducted by the National Fire

    Protection Association (NFPA), apartment fires

account for roughly 6% of all US fires each year; yet they result

in 13% of all fire related deaths and 8% of total property loss.

Apartment fires present significant risks to life and property

because there are often many residents living in an apartment

complex and their homes are in close proximity to one another.

For this reason, a fire that starts in one unit may damage or

destroy the apartments that surround it before firefighters canarrive to extinguish the blaze.

Before a fire strikes, residents are encouraged to take the

    following precautions:

Smoking is the leading cause of fires in the home. Smoking

is allowed only in approved areas. Never discard smoking

materials in the trash or near combustible materials.

Test Smoke Alarms regularly and have batteries replaced at

least once a year. If your smoke alarm does not work orneeds new batteries, contact our Maintenance Help Line:

    731-6699.

Keep combustible materials at least 3 feet from heating

equipment, space heaters, hot water heaters and other heat

    producing appliances.

Never use extension cords as permanent wiring and never

sue extension cords that are damaged or split. Inspect all

electrical cords for damage before plugging in appliance. Unplug small appliances like toasters and coffee pots, when

    they are not in use.

Never leave food unattended when cooking. If a grease

fire starts, cover it with a wet towel or lid and call 911

    immediately.

Familiarize yourself with exits and stairwells and make an

escape plan to vacate your apartment in case of fire.

    REALITY

    By Ellen Canterbury

There is sorrow in my heart

    When a friend is ill,

    When a friend moves,

    When a friend dies.

One day I too will be ill

    Or move, or die.

    Dear friend, do not mourn,

There is always a homecoming in heaven.

    AUGUST NIGHTS

    By Roger KaseI lie there

    At night

    Peace

    Quiet

    Ease

    Alone

Slow fan moving air across hot skin.

    Sounds

    Closing

    Down around

    My thoughts of you

    A little boy

    I loved the dark

    Never afraid

Except when I swung my feet

    Out into the night

    Down

    Down

    Down

    Ahh! Touched the floor

    HABOOB HAIKU

    By Pat Raymond

    Monsoons pelting rain

    Highways very hazardous

    Pull over; douse lights!

    Dust devils at play

    Beware driving through haboob

    Time to get off road

    Heavy rain on road

    Your auto might hydroplane

    Slow down; have patience

    WET CINQUAIN

    By Dotty Dittmar

    Clouds build.

    Lightning flashed.

    Cumulus, hammerhead

    Imaged fiercely map the sky.

LIBRARY CORNERAn imagined conversation in early 19th

    century:

    Wheres Abe Lincoln this morning?

Hes up by his sweethearts grave just sitting

    under a tree reading

Thats the reason hell never amount to

anything. All he ever does is sit around and read.

Or maybe Shakespeare had it right in his play,

Julius Caesarwhen he has the would-be emperor

say of another person, ...He has a lean and hungry

look. He reads too much. Such men are dangerous.

As a reading instructor, I often heard something

like this: I aint got time for reading. I have towork to pay off my car.

Those who have found the true joy of reading

dont just sit around. They have found that just

sitting there reading can take them into outer

space with the astronauts or they can sail under

the polar icecap just by reading a good book.

A thing that books do well is to expand our

horizons. The poet Emily Dickenson once wrote,

A book is like a frigate. On this frigate, readers

can sail the seven seas or discover new continents.

Today, we have many things that take up our time

such as TV where someone else does your

imagining for you. A book allows your own

imagination to work letting you see things through

    your own eyes.

I give a lot of books to kids today, trying to

twist their arms into discovering the joy ofreading. Libraries are full of trips to the moon or

entering into the center of the earth. Your ticket is

already paid for. All you have to do is climb

aboard that frigate and begin a new adventure.

John Keats, the poet, may have said it most

memorably; Much have I travelled in realms of

gold and many goodly states and kingdoms seen.

Those realms of gold were, of course, books.
