Professional Value of Fellowship• “The award of Fellowship indicates
that a member has demonstrated the ability to perform at a high level of professionalism, and has made a measurable contribution to the profession.”
• “Attainment of Fellowship indicates professional recognition of the fulfilment of the potential perceived at the time of the award of Associateship”
Regulations
• applicants must be members of the LA
• normal requirement 5 years as ALA
• holders of overseas or equivalent UK qualifications may be eligible to apply
Criteria for Assessment
• ability of candidate to carry out demanding tasks and handle complex professional issues
• contribution made by the candidate to the whole or part of the profession
Form of Application
• research in the form of a thesis or dissertation
• published material in any format• evidence of practical professional
achievement of any kind• accounts of professional work with
supporting evidence• other relevant evidence
Presentation
• 500 word Statement stating grounds for application - compulsory - 3 copies
• curriculum vitae - compulsory - 3 copies
• statements of support from Fellows
• appropriate evidence to substantiate the application
Assessment
• assessment by Registration Board
• initial assessment by pair of Board members including one Fellow
• final assessment by whole Board at meeting
Award of Fellowship
• certificates signed individually
• Fellowship Presentation Ceremony takes place as part of Members’ Day
Benefits of Fellowship
• highest professional qualification awarded by the LA
• quality assurance to employers and users of LIS
• personal sense of achievement
