THE MYSTERY OF GOD’S MERCY Pope Francis in a homily on this week’s Gospel passage of the ‘woman caught in adultery’ (John 8:1-11) describes forgiveness as a “caress”. Blasphemy, idolatry and adultery are grave sins because they go against the image of God. As Pope Francis says: “marriage in addition to being a human reality, is the symbol of God’s faithful relationship with his people”. Thus, “when marriage is ruined through adultery, it sullies God’s relationship with his people”. When the woman who was caught in adultery was brought to Jesus he was teaching at the time. So when they threw her in front of him they were putting to the test his teach- ing about God. If Jesus said ‘yes’ to her being punished then they would say ‘look at your good teacher, how he treats this poor woman!’ If he said ‘no’ to her being punished then they would say ‘look at your good teacher, how he goes against the image of God’. Instead, Jesus did not want to speak to their hard hearts but to the woman’s tender heart. So he got rid of the accusers—’Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone’. And they went away. Jesus then speaks to the woman’s heart mercifully—he forgives but there is something more here! “He doesn’t tell her that adultery is not a sin, but he doesn’t condemn her with the law”. This, the Pope said, is “the mystery of Jesus’ mercy ... in being merciful Jesus” transcends the law, goes beyond the law because mercy is the mystery of God’s for- giveness. God’s mercy does not pretend that there is no sin but is rather the act or manner or way that God forgives. Jesus not only says that the sins are forgiven but counsels the woman ‘to sin no more’. The Pope says: “God does not forgive with a decree but a caress”. Holy Mother Church reminds us that we should go to the Sacra- ment of Reconciliation once a year. Lent is the perfect time to receive “God’s caress” of forgiveness. Confessions in the Parish Church are on Saturdays 10:00-11:00am and Good Friday 25th March 10:00am-12 Noon or speak to a priest. IMPORTANT In order to soften the noise of the kneelers in church, carpet has been adhered to the feet of them. During the past two weeks several of these pieces of carpet have been pulled off. THE MYSTERY OF GOD’S MERCY

Pope Francis in a homily on this week’s Gospel passage of the ‘woman caught in adultery’ (John 8:1-11) describes forgiveness as a “caress”. So when they threw her in front of him they were putting to the test his teach-ing about God. This, the Pope said, is “the mystery of Jesus’ mercy ... in being merciful Jesus” transcends the law, goes beyond the law because mercy is the mystery of God’s for-giveness. God’s mercy does not pretend that there is no sin but is rather the act or manner or way that God forgives. Jesus not only says that the sins are forgiven but counsels the woman ‘to sin no more’. The Pope says: “God does not forgive with a decree but a caress”. Holy Mother Church reminds us that we should go to the Sacra-ment of Reconciliation once a year. Thursday Feast of Saint Patrick

Patron Saint of Ireland

(385-461) St Patrick was born into a Christian Romano-British family. His first encounter with Ireland was as a slave after he was captured by raiders at the age of sixteen. After escaping, he studied in Gaul and was ordained a priest. Around 432 he returned to Ireland as a missionary bishop and succeeded in consolidating the faith in large parts of the country.

Friday Saint Cyril of Jerusalem

St Cyril was born near Jerusalem and for many years served as Patriarch of that holy city, although after disputes with Arian heretics, had him exiled for seventeen years. He is mainly known for his ‘Catecheses’. His instructions, which are still present, show conclusively that catholic doctrine is the same then as now. It was his catechetical instructions which led him to be declared a Doctor of the Church in 1882.
