INTRODUCTION
Fellertisaseamlessacousticalplastersystemwithaestheticdesigncapabilities.Themaincomponentsareacousticalboardandacousticalplaster.Boththesecomponentsindividuallycontributetowardssoundabsorption. ThepurposeofthisinstallationguideistoprovidethereaderwiththebasicfundamentalsofhowtoinstallFellert.Theguideconsistsofmainlypictures,descriptions,andnotes.
Thisdocumentservesasaguideandnotaspecificinstructionmanual.Asalmostnoconstructionprojectisidentical,eachFellertinstallationwillhavedifferentcircumstances;however,thebasicprinciplesofinstallingtheproductremainthesame.
AllFellertapplicatorsarerequiredtoattendatrainingclasspriortopurchasingmaterialsandapplyingtheFellertsystem.ApplicatorsarerequiredtoperformqualityinstallationsoftheFellertsystemoneveryproject.
TheFellertspecificationsandpolicydocumentsstatetherequirementofaprojectmockup.Applicatorsneedtoobtainapprovalofaprojectmockuppriortocommencingwiththeinstallation.Theapplicatoris100%responsibleforthequalityoftheprojectinstallation.

LIMITATIONS & GUIDELINES
Aswithanyhand-craftedplaster,thefinalappearanceoftheFellertacousticalsystemmayvaryslightlythroughouttheexpanseofthesurfaceareaespeciallyundercriticallightingconditions.Theinstallershouldalwaysfollowlocalbuildingcodesandregulationsandisfullyresponsibleforthequalityoftheinstallation.
JOB CONDITIONS
• Allwindowsandexteriordoorsshallbeinplaceandglazed.Thebuildingshallbewater-tightpriortothestartoftheinstallation.Thisconditionshouldbemaintainedduringandaftertheinstallation.AllGWBsubstratesmustbe“sealedairtight”toalevelonefinish.AllHVAC,electrical,firesprinklerandotherpenetrationsshallbesealedwithtraditionaldrywalltapeoraself-adhesivefire-tapetopreventairmovementbetweentheoccupiedspaceandtheplenum.FordirectattachmenttoceilinggridapplicationsensurethattheHVACsystemintheoccupiedspaceisproperlybalanced.• FixturessuchasMEP,lighting,sprinklers,ventilation,etc.,shouldbeinplacepriortothestartoftheinstallation.• TheFellertacousticalmaterialsareforinterioruseonly.Theinstallationshouldbedonewithintypicaloccupancytemperaturerangesof15–32°C(60–90°F)andatamaximumof70%relativehumidity.• Acousticalboardsshallbeprotectedfromexposuretosunlight.Keeptheboardsinthepackaginguntilreadyforuse.EnsurethatthetherearenodelaysinsprayingthefirstcoatofFellertacousticalplastertotheboards.• Itisnotrecommendedtohavecoldjointsinthefinishplaster.ThefinalapplicationoftheFellertacousticalplasterhastobecompletedinasingleworkstep—donecorner-to-cornerortoabreakstoppingpoint.

CONTROL JOINTS
Fundamentallyspeaking,theelasticnatureoftheFellertplastersystemmeansthatthereisnoengineeringrequirementofcontroljointsexceptwhenabuildingisunderexcessivestructuralstress.Structuralexpansionsjointsareobservedhowever.TherearepracticallimitationsofhowlargeofanexpansetheFellertcontractorcancompleteinasingleworkday.
Thefollowingareguidelines:• Upto232M2(2,500sqft)achievablewithaFellertcontractorundernormalworkingconditions.• Upto465M2(5,000sqft)achievablewithanexperiencedFellertcontractor;however,additionalspraycrewswillberequired.Additionalworkinghoursmayberequired.• Over465M2(5,000sqft)achievablewithanexperiencedFellertcontractor;however,additionalspraycrewswillberequired.Additionalworkinghourswillberequired.Properplanningisrequiredwhenattemptingverylargeexpanses.
EFFECTS OF LIGHTING
Itisadvisabletoconsiderthatthelightingselectedbecomplementarytotheceilingfinish.Themostcriticalfactoristhedirectionofthelightsource.Acriticalhorizontallightthatstrikesanyceilingsurfaceatanacuteangleaccentuatesnormalceilingirregularities,affectingthefinalappearanceofanyfinish.Exteriorlightingfromwindowscanhighlightthenaturalvariationsofhand-craftedplaster.

MOCKUPCONDITIONS
MOCKUP CHECKLIST:Per the Fellert specifications and installation guide a mockup must be approved by the architect or client prior to the commencement of the installation. The mockup can be part of the scope of work. The contractor is fully responsible for ensuring a quality installation of the Fellert system.
□ InstallerhasattendedaFellerttrainingseminarandiscurrentlylistedasanauthorizedinstallerwithFellert.
□ InstallerhascontactedFellertatleastthreeweeksinadvanceifonsitelaborassistanceifneededforthemockup.
□ SamplesoftheFellertfinish,colorandthicknesshavebeenapproved.
□ LocationofFellertmockuphasbeenconfirmedwithgeneralcontractorwhichshouldbeatleast9m2(100sqft)insize.Themockupshallremainintactthroughouttheproject.
Ensurethefollowingsiteconditionshavebeenmetpriortomockupinstallation:□ Allwindowsandexteriordoorsshallbeinplaceandglazed.Thebuildingshallbewatertightpriortothestartoftheinstallation.AllGWBsubstratesmustbe“sealedairtight”toalevelonefinish.AllHVAC,electrical,firesprinklerandotherpenetrationsshallbesealedwithtraditionaldrywalltapeoraself-adhesivefire-tapetopreventairmovementbetweentheoccupiedspaceandtheplenum.FordirectattachmenttoceilinggridapplicationsensurethattheHVACsystemintheoccupiedspaceisproperlybalanced.□ Theinstallationshouldbedonewithintypicaloccupancytemperaturerangesof15–32°C(60–90°F)andatamaximumof70%relativehumidity.□ Allpermanentfixturessuchaslights,diffusers,speakers,etc.aretobeincludedinthemockup.□ Theintendedlightingconditionsforthebuildingaretobeusedorsimulatedinthemockup.□ EnsurethatthebuildingisventilatedtoassistwiththedryingprocessiftheHVACisnotoperational.

□ Mockupapprovedbyarchitect/client.
AnyadditionalcostsincurredtoFellertasaresultofchangestothemockupscheduleand/orscopeofworkwillbebornebytheinstallingcontractor.TheFellertsystemmustbeinstalledperthespecificationsandmanufacturer’sinstallationguideinordertoqualifyfortheproductwarranty.

INSTALLATIONTYPES
A. New GWB (FullyAdheredSystem)
Thisisthepredominantapplicationmethod.TheFellertAcousticalBoardisadheredtoGWBsubstratethatmustbe“sealedairtight”toalevelonefinish.AllHVAC,electrical,firesprinklerandotherpenetrationsshallbesealedwithtraditionaldrywalltapeoraself-adhesivefiretapetopreventairmovementbetweentheoccupiedspaceandtheplenum.MeshtapeandFellertPrimerareappliedtotheplasticCchannel,GWBrippers,cornerbeads,etc.TheFellertAcousticalBoardisthensprayedwiththeFellertacousticalplaster.
AlternativesubstratestheFellertmaybeappliedtoare:concrete,existingplaster,GFRGsurfaces,andpreviouslypaintedGWB.Thesesubstrateswillneedtobetestedforbondstrength,cleanedandsandedsmooth.TheFellertAcousticalBoardisattachedtothesubstrateswiththeFellertAdhesiveandsecuredwithaminimalamountofFellertSpringWashersifrequired.
B. Ceiling Grid (DirecttoFraming–NoGWB)
TheFellertacousticalplastersystemcanbeinstalledto406mmc/c(16”o.c.)drywallgrid.ThesubstrateisconstructedwithoutalayerofGWB.TheFellertacousticalboardsaremechanicallyattachedtodrywallgridtherebyeliminatingtheneedandcostforalayerofGWB.Thereisanincreaseinsoundabsorptionperformanceinthelowfrequencyrangewiththedirect-togridinstallationmethodwhichiscommonlyreferredtoastheE-400mountand/orairgapbehind.TherearelimitationstowhattypesofsubstratedesignsthatcanbedonewiththeFellertdirect-to-gridmethod.Thefollowingareguidelines:
• FlatshapesareachievablewiththenormalFellertdirect-togridinstallationmethod.Thisincludesangledceilingsandwalls1.82M(6ft)aboveFFL.ThisisthestandardFellertdirect-to-gridapplicationmethodandisexpectedfromalltrainedinstallers.• Barrelvaultedceilingsarepossibleprovidingthedrywallgridis406mmc/c(16”o.c.).However,notethatthisinstallationmethodwillbemoretimeconsumingasmoreFellertSpringWasherswillbeneeded.ConsultwithyourlocalFellertagentpriortospecifyingtheFellertdirect-to-gridsystemonabarrelshapedceiling.• Domesandvaultedceilingsarenotpossiblewiththedirect-to-gridsystem.• NotethattheHVACsystemintheoccupiedspaceistobeproperlybalanced.
C. Plaster only (NoFellertAcousticalBoard)
FellertPrimerisappliedtoadrywallsubstratepreparedtoalevel4standard.TheprimedsurfaceisthensprayedwiththeFellertacousticalplaster.Alternativesubstratessuchasconcrete,existingplasterandpreviouslypaintedGWBwillneedtobepreppedaccordinglyandensuretheyaresoundandfreefromcracking.

TheCchannelisnotdesignedtobeaself-finishedexposededgedetail,e.g.cloudsorexposedreturnangles:soldin3M(10ft)lengths.
Fellert Acoustical Board
The25mm(1”)or39mm(1.5”)122x122cm(4’x4’)FellertAcousticalBoardisthemaincomponentoftheFellertsystemthatabsorbssound.Donotremovefromthepackagingorexposetosunlightuntilreadytoapply.AlwaysapplythefirstlayerofFellertplasterwithin24hoursofinstallingtheacousticalboardprovidinganyapplicationofFellertprimerhasfullydried.Alwaysstoreflat,donotstackonedge.The25mm(1”)sizehas8boardsperboxand39mm(1.5”)sizehas6boardsperbox.

OnanyboardsthatwillslotintotheplasticCchannelyouneedtobeveltheedgebytrimmingthebackedgeofthefiberglassboardasthiswillenableiteaseintothechannel;keepthesesliversforjointpreparationwork.
EnsurethepresslinesonthebackoftheFellertacousticalboardallflowinthesamedirectionduringtheinstallation.Theselineswillflowperpendiculartothelongrunsofjointlinesasdepicted.
ApplytheFellertAdhesivetothebackoftheboardevenly.Donotleaveanyspotsuncoveredandensureyouapplytheadhesiveallthewaytotheedges.

Multi-Color
Severalcolorscanbeincorporatedintotheacousticalfinishtocreatecustomdesigns.
TheSecern,Sahara,andSilkfinishesareavailableincustomcolors.AllcustomfinishesmustbemadeandapprovedbyFellert.
Duringthemixingprocessthecolorantismixedintothewaterpriortotheadditionoftheplasterproduct.Forapplicationswithcolorsofmoreintenseordeepcolorsitwilltendtohavemoremottlingoracolorvariancethroughouttheceilingsinceitisahandappliedplaster.Ifalighterormoremediumtoneofblueischosenthemottlingwillbeconsiderablylessbutwillalwayshaveaslightcolorvariance.Allcustomfinishtechniquesneedtobeapprovedbyallpartieswithamock-uppriortoinstallation.

Astheplasterissprayedandhandtroweledproduct,itallowssoundtobeabsorbedwhileretaininganattractive,wall-to-wallseamlessappearance.
ThefinalappearanceofanyTextured,FineTextured,orSmoothfinisheswillvaryslightlythroughouttheexpanseofthesurfaceaswithanyhand-craftedplaster,especiallyundercriticallightingconditions.Theproductshouldbemonolithicandnaturalplasterlookinginfinalappearance.
