pattern notes:

this pattern has fully written and charted directions. knit along the “instructions” section and work from

the chart or the written pattern instructions according to your preferences.

if you want to make the shawl wider (= work more sts) or work less sts (because you are knitting it in a

thicker yarn), you’ll have to add / subtract a multiple of 9 sts.

i.e. instead of 52 sts, you could cast on 61 or 43 sts.

the first and last 3 stitches on either side form a sort of knitted-on i-cord. Make sure to work the sl yf

very loosely to prevent the edge from being too tight and thus the scarf from puckering.

instructions:

• loosely cast on 52 stitches.• knit 3 rows.• then repeat the 64 rows of the pattern (see below) until you nearly run out of yarn (or until scarf is

long enough). end after row 21 or 53 of pattern, so both ends of the scarf will look ~identical.• knit 3 rows.• cast off (don’t knit too loosely lest the edge be too wide)• weave in both ends and block lightly.

(don’t block aggressively to preserve the 3-D structure of the pattern.)• enjoy!

about this pattern:

"I Feel Pretty" is one of the most loved songs from Leonard Bernstein's Broadway hit “West Side Story”.

Set in the Upper West Side of New York in the 1950s, the musical tells a modern version of Shakespeare's

love story Romeo and Juliet. Swept away in her love for Tony, the heroine Maria sings this joyful,

elegant song which captures her bliss and newfound sense of confidence:

“I feel pretty, oh so pretty, I feel pretty and witty and bright! And I pity any girl who isn't me tonight…

I feel stunning and entrancing, feel like running and dancing for joy, for I'm loved by a wonderful boy!”

Whether you use this little scarf while dancing the night away or simply to keep warm in a cool summer

breeze, I hope you’ll always feel pretty wearing it.
