MESSAGE FROM
tHE CHAIR
Food is and has always been a great equalizer – hunger does not favor people of a partic-ular race, religion or political viewpoint. In Fairfax County, there are nearly 60,000 people who are food insecure (including over 27,000 children). Thankfully, there are also dedicat-ed volunteers who gave over 26,000 hours of their time in FY2017, and many generous people who donated their hard-earned money to Food for Others so they didn’t have to go hungry. What I love about Food for Others is how it unites people of all backgrounds and perspectives as we all work together to distribute food to our neighbors in need.
The staff at Food for Others is passionate about helping fight food insecurity and it’s evident in everything they do. In addition to staff, we have an unbelievably committed group of volunteers and wonderful donors. We are so grateful for all of your time and support, and hope you are as proud as we are of all Food for Others achieved this year.
Below are a few key achievements from FY2017:
Here’s to a continued year of innovation and helping others in 2018!
Most Sincerely,
Sara SingmasterChair, Board of Directors
• The new choice model (allowing clients to pick foods they prefer) has provided a more dignified experience and reduced food waste.
• A concerted effort to provide more healthy options resulted in a 19% increase in donated produce that was distributed.
• The launch of our first community garden provided additional produce to distribute.
• The successful pilot of a new program in which we partnered with local pediatricians to identify children who need assistance.

Emergency Food operations at our warehouse provide 3-5 days’ worth of non-perishables as well as milk, eggs and other fresh food to individuals and families referred to us by Fairfax County CSP and various social service providers. Income eligible clients may also receive monthly food supplements ordered on their behalf from the USDA Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). New in FY17, clients have the opportunity to shop for their food in our Choice area.
While Northern Virginia is broadly described as
financially affluent and resilient, there are wide
gaps in income, employment, education and
opportunities available. 1 in 17 Fairfax County
residents live in poverty with inadequate income
to meet basic needs having to choose between
spending money for food, or on other basic
needs such as housing, utilities, health care, and
transportation. Food for Others operates as a
safety net for those needing food in an emer-
gency, and for the growing number of working
poor struggling to make ends meet. The food
insecurity rate in Fairfax County is 5.3% with
nearly 60,000 people identified as food insecure.
Nationally, 1 in 8 people struggle with hunger.

FOOD FOR OTHERS FINANCIAL REPORTFFO maintains a healthy cash and investment balance with approximately 18 months of operating expenses in reserves. As of year-end, total assets exceed total liabilities by $2,165,340. This makeup provided FFO with the ability to find new and innovative ways to serve our clients and continue to meet current demand while not relying solely on food donations. Some initiatives that FFO undertook in recent years were funding our warehouse expansion and rolling out the Choice program to our clients.

This year marked the 10th Anniversary of Empty
Bowls hosted by the Giving Circle of HOPE. This key
fundraising event produced over $40,000 for Food
for Others and continues to raise awareness about
food insecurity in our community. The dedication
of loyal volunteers and a strong commitment from
artists and local businesses has been invaluable.
The Giving Circle of HOPE was founded in January
2004 by four civic-minded women and has grown
to over 100 members with more than a million
dollars invested in the Northern Virginia community.
Through the power of collective giving and the
tenets of Give, Serve, Learn and Lead, people join
together and combine their resources to make an
impact in their communities and on social issues
they care about.
