Benefit from the advantages of HIPERFACE®

• only one interface to the speed controller forall applications

• only one type of signal line between speedcontroller and signal transmitter

• manual parameter setting on the speed contolleris dispensed with (intrinsic initialisation).

1. HIPERFACE® High Performance Interface

The universal interface for electric drives

Depending on their design and application, electricdrives need the following information from correspon-ding sensors in the control loop:

Commutation information Rotational speed information Incremental position information Absolute position information over

several revolutions

All this information can be transferred viaHIPERFACE®.

Technical innovation to meet the highest requirementswas brought into the marketplace by STEGMANN withtheir SinCos® product line. The SinCoder® product line extends the range of motorfeedback systems for standard and low-cost appli-cations. SinCos® and SinCoder® can be supplied withcompatible mechanical and electrical interfaces.Electrical compatibility in respect of all physical para-meters is ensured by the introduction of HIPERFACE®

as the mandatory interface.

SinCos® - The new dimension in motor feedback systems

The development aimsThe objective of developing this product was toprovide a cost-effective feedback system with aperformance previously unattainable. The feedback device must be suitable for usewith servomotors of all kinds.

• It must be possible to install the device in the servo-motor. This requires a high temperature range anda very high immunity to interference.

• It must be possible to transmit the informationrequired for rotational speed control with highaccuracy over a distance of 100 m using only asmall number of cable cores even at speeds upto 12,000 revolutions/minute.

• It must be possible to install the encoder in theservomotor simply. Furthermore the encoder mustremain serviceable and error-free with axial expan-sion of the motor shaft of up to 1.5 mm. Likewise, radial eccentricity of the motor shaft must notcause any angular error.

• It must be possible to electronically assign anabsolute positional value to any mechanicalshaft position.

• The unit should be available in extremly compactform, both as a single-turn encoder or as a multiturnencoder with additional detection of 4096 revo-lutions, in the same mechanical dimensions.

• The electrical interface should be designed suchthat it is possible to read and store not only theactual angle measurements, but also other informa-tion such as encoder temperatures, motor charac-teristic data and logistic information.

The novel featuresWell known types of optical rotary encoders are so-cal-led incremental encoders or absolute encoders. Becau-se of their great complexity, absolute encoders are rela-tively expensive to produce using conventionalmethods.

This conventional method consists of reading binaryinformation coded on a glass disc. Each binary positionrequires appropriate optical scanning. All thesescanning operations must be synchronised with oneanother in such a way that there can be no read errorsunder all operating conditions. In addition, the electricalinterface of such absolute encoders continuously trans-mits the complete absolute value.

The SinCos® system can be considered as a mixture ofan incremental encoder and an absolute encoder. Inthis case, the absolute value is initially formed onlywhen the device is switched on, and is communicatedvia an RS 485 interface to an external counter, whichthen continues to count incrementally from this absolu-te value using the analogue sine/cosine interface.

In order to attain a high resolution whilst ensuring suita-bility of the encoder to high speed applications, theincremental encoder signal is not transmitted as digitalvalues, as is usual, but as an analogue sine/cosinevoltage. With 512 cycles per revolution, even at a speedof 12,000 rev/min the frequency produced is only 102.4KHz, which can then be transmitted without difficulty, even over long distances.

The advantage of using sinusoidal signals is that thetransmission channel does not have to be designedfor an extremely broad band, as is the case of digitalsignals, instead the bandwidth necessary is onlydetermined by the speed.

The absolute information within one 512 cycle As the figure below shows, the angle x can be deter-mined absolutely by means of the two analoguevoltages sine x and cosine x. The calculation of theabsolute position within a 512 cycle is not performedby the SinCos® encoder but externally - in the motordrive or position controller.

Access to the process data used for the actual speedcontrol, that is the sine and cosine signals, is virtuallyalways »on line«. When the supply voltage is switchedon, the speed controller can access this information atany time.

A sophisticated proven technique ensures that theamplitude of the analogue signals over the full rangeof specified environmental conditions varies by amaximum of only 20%.

In special cases, unfavourable operating voltage at start-up may impair the power-up sequence of the encoder. In this instance, we recommend that after the encodersupply voltage has been switched on (t > 100 ms), a

software reset (53H) be initiated. This causes thepower-up sequence to be implemented again. Theencoder status can then be checked after one second (Command 50H).

The SinCos® encoder cannot always be fitted to a motor. In some cases, angle measurement has to be carriedout via a toothed belt or pinion. Equally, it may bemechanically preferable to use a shaft coupling. Tooffer a solution to these applications with the SinCos®

encoder, a flange attachment has been designed, which

is available either as a ready to fit kit (FV 112), or as acomplete unit (SC_70K_AF).As the flange attachment has its own robust mounting, the shaft load may be very high. SinCos® encoders inthe SC_70K_A range can be fitted to this kit.
