Henrich Harrer was in the group who first summited the Eiger in 1938

• A portion of the upper face is called "The White Spider", as snow-filled cracks radiating from an ice-field resemble the legs of a spider.

• Harrer used this name for the title of his book about his successful climb, Die Weisse Spinne (translated into English as The White Spider: The Classic Account of the Ascent of the Eiger).

• During the first successful ascent, the four men were caught in an avalanche as they climbed the Spider, but all had enough strength to resist being swept off the face.

Other Cool Facts

• There is a railway through the mountain with a window out onto the north face

• The North Face is the steepest rock face of the Alps

• People called it “Eiger” which means “ogre”

• It’s been climbed, skied down, BASEjumped off, slacklined on… you name it, it’s been tried.

• North Face… aka Death Wall.

You’ll like this book if historical fiction, boyhood shenanigans, and issues of racial tension interest you, and reading character dialogue in regional dialect would make the story more enjoyable.
