* - Donald Durden - Jeff Gaither * - Emily Henderson

* - Trisha Hobbs - Meg Hughes * - Willard Knipp

* - Donna Meador * - David Pratt * - Louise Pratt

- Barry Sanford * - Clyde Tharp * - Bill Tuttle

* - Denotes those in attendance

Donna Meador called the meeting to order at 6:34 and welcomed everyone to the meeting.

Instead of sharing a devotional with the council, Donna Meador asked that members share blessings we

have experienced or seen this Advent season. Many of the blessings shared centered on various Christmas

programs...children’s programs in the community and our combined Christmas worship service with pre-

schoolers through octogenarians sharing their musical gifts. Other blessings shared included a colleague’s

memorial service and participation of youth in worship services (Clara Henderson assisting Clyde Tharp with

the offering last week; Clyde’s granddaughters both serving yesterday, with Tristen singing and Kaden col-

lecting the offering). Clyde Tharp closed the time of sharing in prayer.

Donna then asked that the minutes of the November 17, 2014 meeting be approved. There were two cor-

rections requested; Michael Watts is the correct name in lieu of Watson on page two, and a typo on page

one concerning the handout from the Staff-Parish Relations Committee. Jim Coots made a motion that the

minutes be accepted with the two corrections. Buddy Bowles seconded the motion and the minutes were

approved.

Donna next addressed the Consent Agenda Reports. The Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) and Trus-

tees Committee reports were added to those initially sent. Clyde Tharp made a motion to accept the Con-

sent Agenda Reports with the two added reports. Bill Tuttle seconded the motion and these were accepted.

Exceptions and items for discussion were then addressed.

Bill Tuttle spoke first for the Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC). The SPRC interviewed Sarah Krauss

for the position of Director of Children’s Ministries. She is young, energetic, and qualified. It is the recom-

mendation of the SPRC to approve hiring Sarah Krauss for this position. Clyde Tharp seconded the recom-

mendation and the recommendation was approved. Bill then reported that the SPRC had tabled discussion

on the hiring policy at their last meeting in order to conduct the interview. This will be addressed after the

first of the year.

Donald Durden spoke next for the Finance Committee. Clyde Tharp was at a conference meeting on Tues-

day of this week and became aware of a change made with the Affordable Care Act that affects the handling

of health insurance for full-time employees. Donald has been checking on other possible changes this week

and has been working with outside tax experts to assure that we comply with changes. Bill Tuttle made a

motion to redirect the amount currently used to pay the medical insurance for the Director of Student Minis-

tries (staff budget line 7) into the salary budget line (staff budget line 6).

Church Council Minutes Cont.

Clyde Tharp seconded this motion and the motion was approved. Bill Tuttle made a motion to redirect

the amount currently paid as a housing allowance for the Director of Student Ministries (staff budget line

9) into the salary budget line (staff budget line 6) beginning on January 1, 2015. Clyde Tharp seconded

this motion and the motion was approved. Donald will continue to work through the changes and the

2015 Finance Committee and Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) members will be informed of any

additional reporting changes needed. Donald also handed out a copy of the current Financial Report for

members to review.

Donna Meador next discussed the summary of the finance survey conducted earlier this year. She stat-

ed that the theme is that we do not communicate enough about what we are doing as a church. People

want to see pictures and hear about activities more on Sunday mornings about Kids Korner, ramp builds,

and other activities. Clyde Tharp pointed out that this communication/feedback is good and now that

the comments are in writing it is time for action. Donna will put together a bulletin insert summary of

the results for the congregation. This insert will offer that members may view comments in the church

office.

Donna Meador asked if there was any other business. Buddy Bowles had received a call from Mayor

Tom Hardesty on Tuesday asking about a possible joint venture with us; an entrance into the gravel

parking lot from Main Street, a summer Farmer’s Market, and possible picnic tables. After some discus-

sion the consensus of the council was to ask for a written proposal that we can discuss and vote upon

before we agree to any possible venture.

Willard Knipp next gave his Pastor’s Report. As the Chair of the Nominations Committee, Willard stated

that Jim Cleveland has resigned from the Trustee’s Committee and the committee will need to find a re-

placement for that class. Willard also added that we are approaching $100,000 in the Endowment Fund.

On Thursday, he attended the District FRYSC Meeting at which Jordan gave her presentation on Human

Trafficking. He was a proud dad that day and her presentation will soon be posted on the school dis-

trict’s website. Willard stated that they are working out details for his January renewal leave. Clyde

Tharp, Bonnie Burks Gray, and Sydney Lawson will be providing pastoral care during the month and

speakers for each of the four Sunday mornings are set. The worship planning is done and there are just

a few last minute titles to be received yet.

Bill Tuttle stated that he is thankful that we have a full staff now.

Trisha Hobbs requested clarification on who approves vacant positions as we did not authorize the

church council to fill positions at the Charge Conference in November. Willard stated that the Church

Council is the approving body for vacancies during the year.

Donna Meador asked if there was any other new business. There was none and Donna asked Willard to

close the meeting with prayer. Willard asked the council to join in singing the Doxology as a closing.

The next meeting date will be January 19th.

Donna Meador adjourned the meeting at 7:43 p.m.

Respectfully Submitted,

Trisha Hobbs

Public Schools Central Office on “Human Trafficking.”

Easter Egg Hunt—Saturday, March 28th at Red Orchard Park

(704 Kentucky Street) Barn—2:00 to 4:00 pm

On the first day of Lent, pastors in many churches dip a finger in ashes (often made by burning palm branch-

es from the previous year’s Palm Sunday) and make a cross on parishioners’ foreheads.

God’s people have used ashes as a sign of mourning, humiliation and penitence. In the Old Testament, ashes were used as a purification offering. The New Testament speaks of repenting in “sackcloth and ashes” (Luke

10:13, NRSV).

On Ash Wednesday, Christians are pained because our sins — private and public — led to Jesus’ death. With

repentant hearts, we begin the season of Lent, knowing it leads to resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Join us for our Ash Wednesday Service on February 18th at 6:30 pm.

Ash Wednesday

The waiting game Life involves lots of waiting. We wait in

groups, in lines, in cars. We wait for packag-

es, for the bus, for the sun to rise. We wait

in doctors’ offices, at the post office, at the

DMV. Waiting implies we’re at someone

else’s mercy, but it’s also usually linked to

hope. Perhaps that’s why Paul Tillich called

waiting a metaphor for faith. Why would one

wait if there weren’t the firm belief that the

object of one’s wait will eventually material-

ize?

Waiting can be enervating, which is why

Isaiah 40:31 is so promising: “They who

wait upon the Lord shall renew their

strength.” Yet waiting is tough if you have

nothing to do while waiting. That’s why

Jesus, when talking about waiting, also

talked about working — work for the night is

coming. Sometimes it’s less tiring to work

than it is to wait.

There’s a lot of waiting during Lent. You’re

waiting for a payoff. You’re waiting for the

Resurrection. You’re waiting for spiritual

growth. And then you realize this isn’t wait-

ing at all. It’s life. It’s joy. It’s opportunity.

It’s blessing.

Seventy

years By the time you’re 70 years old, you will have spent

nearly a quarter of a century sleeping. The average

person spends about 23 years of his or her life in bed.

Here are estimates of how most Americans spend

their waking hours during those 70 years:

11 years working

8 years in leisure pursuits

6 years eating

5 years grooming

4 years being educated

3 years talking

2 years reading

6 months worshiping God

Perhaps Sunday morning worship

isn’t as long as it seems.
