Tourism in Illinois is a statewide collaboration of the Illinois office of Tourism (Enjoy Illinois), statewide convention and visitors bureaus and regional tourism entities. Our collective groups work together to offer an abundance of information locally, statewide, nationally and internationally.

Illinois is divided into four tourism marketing regions. There are four Regional Tourism Development Offices in the State: Great Rivers Country, Chicago and Beyond, Land of Lincoln and Trails to Adventure. Great Rivers Country (GRC) covers 33 counties on the western and central part of Illinois from Galena to Cairo. It’s about 490 miles or so from Galena to Cairo. The four Regional Tourism Development Offices, including ours, work with the Convention and Visitor Bureaus that are located in their respective coverage areas to promote tourism for the State of Illinois. You are welcome to call or visit the Great Rivers Country office where all official Illinois tourism information is available.

The president of Great Rivers Country is Roger Carmak. He has been overseeing this office for decades. Roger also assists the state with international marketing. He is often traveling to England, Toronto, Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong, just to name a few. Roger and his staff work hand in hand with our office to promote Galesburg and Knox County overseas.

Our regional office publishes guides for many things including golfing, bald eagle watching, antiques, a wine trail, bicycling and more. They also manage all the tourist information centers in the region, coordinating all the information the TICs provide. We have all the

GRC information at the Galesburg Welcome Center. But, you are welcome to contact them at (877) 477-7007, [email protected], or at www.greatriverscountry.info.

The Illinois Great River Road National Scenic Byway, which follows the Mississippi River’s shoreline, is part of Great Rivers County and provides ample opportunities to explore the rich heritage of the Mississippi River. It represents four centuries of history and heritage, a compilation of thousands of stories that paints the picture of America’s evolution. Its 550-mile route on Illinois’ western border offers breathtaking views and majestic landscapes. The banks and bluffs of the Mississippi attract thousands of species that travel thousands of miles for a visit or to make themselves a home. For a map and information about the multitude of events and destinations along the Great River Road visit their website at www.greatriverroad-illinois.org.

February brings one of Galesburg’s most popular and anticipated events to the area. The Galesburg Historical Society’s Chocolate Festival is a confectionary’s dream come true. There will be all manner of chocolate creations to see and sample. This year’s festival will be held at 156 East on the corner of Main & Prairie Streets. The event happens on February 14 & 15 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day.

At the end of February, attend the 11th annual Black Earth Film Festival at Cherry Street Restaurant and Bar. It will be in the side room on Thursday, Friday & Saturday

February 26-28.The doors open at 6:00 p.m. each night. Come and enjoy dinner and a cocktail. There will be films from all over the world with three sessions of documentaries, shorts & animation. For more information visit www.blackearthfest.com

As I have reported in the past, tourism in Illinois has had a boom over the last three years. With each year we have broken records for domestic and international tourism. In 2013, 103.5 million domestic visitors spending $31.9 billion for increases of 4.5% and 3.1% respectively for 2012. It looks like 2014 will continue the trend. A very welcome benefit of all those travelers is the $237,419,080 is tax revenues due to the Illinois hotel-motel tax. State and local tax revenue was more than $2.6 billion in 2013. Overall, tourism saves the average Illinois household $1,300 in taxes each year.

Promote Your Business Through MembershipYou've already made a wise choice by becoming a member of the Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce, now you can use that membership to promote your business to other Chamber members as well as the local community.

WANT TO HOST AN EVENT?

BUSINESS AFTER HOURS (BAH) is the Chamber's premier networking event held from 5:00- 7:00 p.m. at a member's business location. This evening networking opportunity is available for hosting throughout the year for only $350.00. Members visit the sponsor’s place of business at no charge which showcases their location and

products or services. It is also an opportunity for the sponsor to tell us about the business. This is a great opportunity to meet and get to know other community members while enjoying hors d'oeuvres and refreshments. Call the Chamber office today to schedule hosting BAH in 2015.

Galesburg On The Go – Lunch (GOTG) is another great networking opportunity. GOTG is held from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Besides meeting friends and making new acquaintances, members who sponsor this event present information about the business or organization to other members and associates. Presentations are 15 -

20 minutes and the cost for sponsoring is only $200.00. If GOTG is more to your liking, call the Chamber office today to schedule hosting GOTG in 2015.

New Chamber Member Benefit In an effort to expand our membership services and meet our members' needs, the Galesburg Chamber announces a new marketing opportunity: the Email Blast Program. Many of our Chamber members inquire about our office sending an email "blast' to our distribution lists, on their behalf. These requests range from announcing a new product or service to advertising an upcoming event and this new program allows you, as a member, to send emails to our distribution list with the following stipulations:

• The Chamber staff will send ONE email "blast" per business day. Similar to our newsletter inserts, you will need to make a reservation for the day you want your email to be distributed. There would be NO email blasts on days when the Chamber office is closed. You may reserve spots on a first come, first served basis by calling or emailing our office.

• Email blasts will be sent "on behalf of' your business/organization. This would be stated in the email to ensure that the email is not perceived as being endorsed by the Chamber. The chamber staff reserves the right to reject an email due to its content.

• You are responsible for formatting and constructing the email and sending it to our office ([email protected]) at least 24 hours prior to the reserved date. We will NOT edit the email in any way. The Chamber office will then "blast" it to our list of over 850 individuals that have the option of forwarding it.

• You may choose to send attachments with your email blast, keeping in mind that it must not exceed the size limit and have the ability to be forwarded.

• The cost for this service is $20.00 per email blast. As a member, you can send one email blast per month. If you reserve a space, then fail to send us your email, you will still be charged the $20.00.

It is not our intention to flood our members' inboxes with emails, which is why we will limit the email blasts to ONE per day.

We are excited to share this new marketing opportunity with you and hope that this will serve as an inexpensive, yet highly effective, marketing tool for our members. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mary at [email protected] or call 343-1194.

New for 2015If you are between the ages of 21 and 40 and work at a business that is a member of the Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce, you can now

join the Young Professionals of Galesburg at no additional cost! Simply provide our office with the names and contact information, and we will forward to that committee for future contact. Dues will still apply to individuals who are not employed by a Chamber member, and events will still have a charge to attend, regardless of your employer.
