Dear White Elementary Families, I hope you are all doing well and staying healthy. We are still waiting to hear from the district’s Governing Board when our return date for in-person learning will occur. Thank you for your continued patience and understanding during the pandemic. We understand it has been very challenging to have your child learning remotely from home. We anticipate a safe return to school very soon. In the meantime, please ensure your child is logging on every day to the classroom Zoom sessions. If your child experiences difficulties at any time, please contact your child’s teacher and let them know what difficulties your child may be having to help resolve them in an efficient and effective manner. Mr. Mutz’s Counseling Corner
On Tuesday, January 26th our students celebrated their 100th Day of School and were gifted with a beautiful morning of snow. As I stopped into classrooms that morning to check in with students, I could see in faces and hear in voices the unbridled excitement at what they were seeing, with many teachers allowing students to go outside to play in the snow with parent permission. For many of our younger students this was their first experience seeing snowfall, and for others it was their first time seeing snowfall in Tucson. The moments I got to spend with those students reminded me of how important new experiences and fresh ideas are to our students’ developing minds and imaginations. As a result, I will be making a concerted effort to infuse my lessons with ideas that encourage creativity and new perspectives.
In January, K-5 students focused on personal growth in different ways. K-2
students read Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution and made their own resolutions, which we will be tracking throughout the rest of this semester. 3-5 students began learning about growth mindset, the belief that all people can grow and change with hard work, dedication and practice. K-5 classes then got to do a fun, interactive lesson on perseverance: never giving up, even when something is hard.
Where January focused on growth, February will focus on positive change.
K-5 classrooms will be reading Malala’s Magic Pencil, a book by Nobel Peace Prize winner and activist Malala Yousafzai asking the question: if you had a magic pencil to change the world, what would you draw? Students will draw or write what
they would do to make positive change in the world. I can’t wait to see what students come up with!
One more thing: I am still facilitating our Virtual Run Club on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2pm-2:45pm. Any student at White may participate on either day. It is a great way to stay active and connect with other students. If you think your child would be interested, please email me for a Zoom Meeting ID and password.

El martes 26 de enero nuestros estudiantes celebraron su 100 día de clases y fueron obsequiados con una hermosa mañana de nieve. Cuando me detuve en las aulas esa mañana para hablar con los estudiantes, pude ver en los rostros y escuchar en las voces la emoción desenfrenada por lo que estaban viendo, con muchos maestros permitiendo que los estudiantes salieran a jugar en la nieve con el permiso de los padres. Para muchos de nuestros estudiantes más jóvenes, esta fue su primera experiencia al ver nevadas, y para otros, fue la primera vez que vieron nevadas en Tucson. Los momentos que pude pasar con esos estudiantes me recordaron lo importantes que son las nuevas experiencias e ideas frescas para el desarrollo de la mente y la imaginación de nuestros estudiantes. Como resultado, haré un esfuerzo concertado para infundir mis lecciones con ideas que fomenten la creatividad y nuevas perspectivas. En enero, los estudiantes de K-5 se enfocaron en el crecimiento personal de diferentes maneras. Los estudiantes de K-2 leyeron la Resolución de Año Nuevo de Squirrel y tomaron sus propias resoluciones, que seguiremos durante el resto de este semestre. 3-5 estudiantes comenzaron a aprender sobre la mentalidad de crecimiento, la creencia de que todas las personas pueden crecer y cambiar con trabajo duro, dedicación y práctica. Las clases de K-5 luego pudieron hacer una lección divertida e interactiva sobre la perseverancia: nunca darse por vencido, incluso cuando algo es difícil.
Mientras que enero se centró en el crecimiento, febrero se centrará en un cambio positivo. Las aulas de K-5 leerán el lápiz mágico de Malala, un libro de la activista y ganadora del Premio Nobel de la Paz Malala Yousafzai que hará la pregunta: si tuvieras un lápiz mágico para cambiar el mundo, ¿qué dibujarías? Los estudiantes dibujarán o escribirán lo que harían para lograr un cambio positivo en el mundo. ¡No puedo esperar a ver qué se les ocurre a los estudiantes!
Una cosa más: sigo facilitando nuestro Virtual Run Club los martes y jueves de 2:00 a 2:45. Cualquier estudiante de White puede participar en cualquier día. Es una excelente manera de mantenerse activo y conectarse con otros estudiantes.
