IMPORTANT SMP VOLUNTEER NOTES: Thank you for your generous donation of time and support to our Community! SMP Volunteer Events are open to ALL Active Duty, Dependents, DoD, and their guests. LOA’s are typically available for all SMP Volunteers within 5 business days at the SMP Front Desk. Transportation provided to Active Duty, with priority given to single/unaccompanied Active Duty Service Members, unless otherwise specified. We update our website often with additional volunteer opportunities that are not on this calendar! Please also ensure to check our website for any changes in event details. If you are POV’ing for any volunteer events, please pick up an SMP POV Volunteer Log at the SMP Front Desk, available anytime! Please turn in your completed SMP POV Log to

the Front Desk within 14 days, so we can start processing your LOAs. LOAs will be processed once confirmed. Please dress for weather!

FEBRUARY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Craven County Clean Sweep (2/1). Help us during this community wide effort to clean up parks, streams, roadsides, and other sites in need in New

Bern! Meet at the Roadhouse at 0800; will return around 1230. Special Olympics Basketball (2/4, 2/11, and 2/18). Have some fun and assist our awesome Athletes with a variety of basketball drills and relays! Meet

at the Roadhouse at 0830; will return around 1300. Lunch and drinks will be provided! o Tuesday, 2/4: Elementary School o Tuesday, 2/11: Middle and High School o Tuesday, 2/18: Group homes/independent

Craven County Habitat for Humanity (2/4, 2/11, 2/18, and 2/25). Assist with Habitat’s newest builds and projects in New Bern. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0715; will return around 1300. Please wear closed toed shoes, and weather appropriate civilian attire.

RCS Food Pantry (2/5). Assist with special projects at RCS, which supports our local homeless population. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0745; will return around 1430. Lunch provided.

Tryon Palace Greenhouse Project (2/7). Help the Tryon Palace Greenhouse with a variety of projects! Meet at the Roadhouse at 0715; will return around 1200. Please check our website for additional garden volunteer dates as they become available!

Bayview Senior Valentine’s Ball (2/12). Attend the Valentines Ball in your dress blues and spend time with the assisted living residents! Refreshments will be provided. Meet at the Roadhouse at 1715. Will return around 2030. Attire is Dress Blue Bravos.

Pruitt Health Neuse Campus Senior Valentine’s Ball (2/13). Attend the Valentines Ball in your dress blues and spend time with the assisted living residents! Refreshments will be provided. Meet at the Roadhouse at 1700. Will return around 2030. Attire is Dress Blue Bravos.

Pruitt Health Trent Campus Senior Valentine’s Celebration (2/14). Visit with our local Veterans and Assisted Living Residents on Valentine’s Day! Attire is proper civilian attire. Please meet at the Roadhouse at 1300; will return around 1600.

Marine Warrior Library Once Upon an Afternoon (2/14). Help out with games, crafts, and activities for children ages 5-12. Meet at the Marine Warrior Library on base at 1215; will conclude around 1430.

Veterans Stand Down (2/20, 2/21 and 2/22). Help with this outstanding event which helps our local homeless and disadvantaged Veterans, Active Duty, immediate family members, and family caregivers with food, housing resources, haircuts, hygiene kits, and many more services.

o Thursday, 2/20: Meet at the Roadhouse at 1200; will return around 1630. Proper civilian attire. Food and beverages provided! Requesting 10 volunteers, please.

o Friday, 2/21: Meet at the Roadhouse at 0700; will return around 1630. Proper civilian attire. Food and beverages provided! Requesting 14 volunteers, please.

o Saturday, 2/22: Meet at the Roadhouse at 0700; will return around 1630. Proper civilian attire. Food and beverages provided! Requesting 14 volunteers, please.

Ft Macon State Park Special Projects (2/26). Assist with cleaning up Ft. Macon Beach and Trails and other special projects! Meet at the Roadhouse at 0800; will return around 1500. Please bring closed toed shoes, warm clothes, hat, bagged lunch (or $ for lunch), and water source.

Vietnam Memorial Wall Replica Volunteer Opportunities (3/25 through 3/29). Please see our website for all details, dates, and times! Your assistance in this important event is greatly appreciated!

MCCS Youth Sports Coaching (on-going). Volunteer on base as a Youth Sports Coach! (Basketball coaches are needed). Please contact Youth Sports at 252-466-5493. Training meeting is on 28 October from 1830-2030, however, training can be provided after this date if coach positions are still vacant. Volunteering is 3 to 5 hours per week (two 1-hour practices and games are on Saturday mornings).

Animal Shelter (every Saturday). Volunteer at the Carteret County Animal Rescue. Assist with walking the dogs, meeting with potential adopters, special projects, and cleaning. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0700.

Volunteer with Riverpoint Nursing Home (every Wednesday). Volunteer with our seniors! Attire is proper civilian attire. Meet at the Roadhouse at 1700. Will return around 2000. Please check our website for dates that are POV only.

Havelock Boys and Girls Club (M – F). POV only. Volunteer with our local Boys and Girls Club! Assist with mentoring, tutoring, homework, coaching, and activities! Please contact the Boys and Girls Club at 252-444-5437 for additional details. A one-time $10 background check is required.

Crystal Coast Habitat for Humanity. POV only. Assist with the newest build in Sea Gate, Newport! (Tuesdays and Thursdays). Please contact Michelle Riggs at [email protected] for additional info and to register.

WWII Museum Restoration (on-going M—S; works around your schedule). Love cool history? Want to help save our WWII history?!! Learn how to restore some of the coolest artifacts and VEHICLES from WWII at the Newport WWII Museum. POV only; please contact Frank at [email protected] to set up a time to volunteer!

UPCOMING SPECIAL EVENTS: SMP SUPER BOWL PARTY (2/2)!!! Watch the BIG GAME at the Roadhouse and enjoy FREE SUPER BOWL CAKE and free pizza and wings (while supplies

last)!!! Restaurant food and beverage specials will be abundant! Pre-game and pre-show coverage starts EARLY; kick-off is at 1830. Awesome door prize drawings will be at half-time!!

STOPLIGHT PARTY!!! FREE FOOD!!! (2/13 at 1930). Embrace your singleness, bring a hot date, or make some new friends STOPLIGHT party (red= taken; yellow = it’s complicated; green = single; other colors = ???). Music, games, Valentine’s Trivia (gift cards awarded for the winning team of four!), bring your funniest date story and best pick up line, Heart Dart Tournament, restaurant and beverage specials. Free food (while supplies last) and PARTY kicks off at 1930.

SMP Mardi Gras Party (2/25)! Enjoy some famous cake and activities! Kicks off at 1900. SMP Council Meeting (2/27 at 1400 at the Roadhouse). SMP is YOUR program, so come fill us in on your recreation ideas, volunteering ideas, and QOL

concerns. Bible Discussion Group! Every Tuesday at 1900 in the Roadhouse reading room. Fridays! Karaoke!! Starts at 1900! Karaoke night on 2/28 will have free chips and salsa! Escape the cold weather, each night at the Roadhouse at 1930.

SMP Savannah St. Patrick’s Trip! (3/13/20 through 3/15/20). $215/pp based on double occupancy. Welcome to the LARGEST St Patrick’s celebration in the U.S.!! Enjoy 3 days and 2 nights of live music, friends, hundreds of activities, historic downtown Savannah, St. Patrick's Day Festival, and FUN! Cost of the trip is $215 which includes transportation and lodging in Savannah. Deadline to register and pay is 15 February 2020 at Crystal Coast Travel and Leisure (252-466-2197), but please still contact them if past this date.
