We have been greatly blessed with the donation
of a Story & Clark baby grand piano for St. Mary Magdalen! This beautiful piano was owned by Robert Tremblay who passed away recently. His loved one heard of the need at St. Mary Magdalen and offered the piano as a donation in his memory.
The donation is certainly an answer to prayers as we have been looking for an instrument for the past few months and, though we came close to pur-chasing one once or twice, it didn’t feel as though either was the right situa-tion and we decided to wait until the new year to do some fundraising and more searching. The existing keyboard has been relocated downstairs, which will provide additional rehearsal space, as well as provide an instru-ment to be played in the Church Hall once again.
Just last Wednesday evening during the Holy Hour for Life, those who gathered were amazingly generous in blessing the Pregnancy Care Center
with food, clothing, and other handmade items. We focused on the beauty of Life that evening and reached out beyond ourselves to give to others by listening to those who minister to women and men in crisis, to pray about the sanctity of all life and to bless a life-giving ministry with donations. In thinking about that evening and the gift of this piano given in memory of a life, this quote from 2 Corinthians seems to say it all!
2 Corinthians 9: 9-12 As it is written, “He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness
endures forever.” You will be enriched in every way
for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through us; for the ren-
dering of this ministry not only sup-plies the needs of the saints but also overflows with many thanks-givings to God.
We are extremely grateful to the donor, Paul, and to God for His blessings and provision for our needs.
God is GOOD!
Preparing a comprehensive Safety and Security Plan is of the utmost importance when it comes to protecting our Collaborative Community. The Archdiocese of Boston has partnered with Ratio Risk Services to offer a parish safety training program that includes designing and im-plementing a preparedness plan for our parishes and hands-on active shooter response training. Conducted by law enforcement professionals with SWAT team experience, the active shooter response por-tion of the training will provide practical information and hands-on experience in a range of parish settings.
This program is open to all interested parishioners and is free of charge, but participants must register
before February 13th. To register, call 617-913-2017 or go to
www.ratiorisk.com/feb20

Something You Should Know
Let’s Get Ready To Welcome Two New Catholics Fr. Michael J. Harkins
M any of us (of “a certain age”)—including myself—remember from our early religious education the Baltimore Catechism. A catechism is any book
intended for religious instruction, especially cov-ering all aspects of Catholic faith and living. Catechesis is the process of learning about and being formed in the Church’s beliefs, wor-ship, and way of life. A catechumen is one formally following Christ’s call into his Church. The catechumenate is the name of this important step. At the beginning of the Church, obviously on-ly adults converted to Christianity. Remember, for many centuries to be a Christian was to be-long to be a Catholic (as we understand the term). The adults obviously wanted their children to be Christians as well, and presented them for baptism. In doing so, they willingly promised to raise them as Christians. As their children grew in understanding and lived the faith, they com-pleted their Christian Initiation (Confirmation and Eucharist) in due time. Soon, infant baptism became the norm and the lengthy process of Christian Initiation of Adults fell into disuse. It was revived by the Sec-ond Ecumenical Council of the Vatican and is known as the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA for short).
What are the steps of RCIA?
In beginning of the process, an individual comes to some knowledge of Jesus Christ, con-siders his or her relationship with Jesus Christ, and is usually attracted in some way to the Cath-olic Church. This period is known as the Period of Evangelization and Precatechumenate. After a conversation with a priest, or RCIA director, the person, known as an "inquirer," may
seek acceptance into the Order of Catechumens, through the Rite of Acceptance. During this Rite, the inquirer stands amidst the parish community and states that he or she wants to become a baptized member of the Catholic Church. The parish assembly affirms this desire and the in-quirer becomes a Catechumen.
We Have Such a Candidate This Year! During the Catechumenate, the Catechu-mens consider what God is saying to them in the Scriptures, what changes in their life they need to make to respond to God's inspiration, and what Baptism in the Catholic Church means. When a Catechumen and the priest and the parish team believe the person is ready to make a faith commitment to Jesus in the Catholic Church, the next step is the request for baptism and the celebration of the Rite of Election. Typically, on the first Sunday of Lent, the Cat-echumens, their sponsors, and their families gather at the cathedral church. The Catechu-mens publicly express their desire for baptism to the diocesan bishop. Their names are recorded in a book and they are called the Elect. The days of Lent are the final Period of Purifi-cation and Enlightenment leading up to the East-er Vigil. Lent is a period of preparation marked by prayer, study, and spiritual direction for the Elect, and prayers for them by the parish com-munities. The Celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation takes place during the Easter Vigil Litur-gy on Holy Saturday night when the Elect receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. Now the person is fully initiated into the Catholic Church. As a newly initiated Christian (Catholic), they continue their formation and education in the Peri-od of the Post Baptismal Catechesis.

February 9, 2020 is World Marriage Day! World Marriage Day honors husband and wife as the foundation of the family and the basic unit of society, and salutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily married life.
Prayer for Married Couples
Heavenly Father, You have created man and woman to be a reflection of Your love for the world. Bless our marriage and all married couples that we might truly become an image and likeness of You in the world. May our love for one another share in your love and fill us with a generous heart that is open to life. When difficult times arise, surround us with your presence, loving family, friends and parishioners to give us the strength and grace we need. Assure all married couples of your abiding pres-ence with us in good times and bad, in sickness and in health and for richer or for poorer. May our lives be a witness to the world of Your loving care, faithful commitment, and persevering love for all people. Amen
