Become an iAdministrator to Strengthen Your Leadership and Management

Today’s school leaders should be harnessing the power of Web 2.0 to demonstrate for faculty and

staff the new teaching and learning strategies used in 21st century classrooms to improve student

engagement and student academic achievement. Web 2.0 is all about interacting with content on

the Internet. Websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia, Google Documents, and individual

blogs are all examples of this type of interaction. Participants in this workshop will learn how to

leverage Web 2.0 tools and applications to increase communication among staff, students, and

the public; to provide professional development for faculty; to conduct classroom walk-throughs

and teacher evaluations; to improve their own time management; and to lead a strategic-planning

process in the area of 21st century learning.

Calm Classroom: An Introduction to a Social Emotional Learning Experience that Develops Self Awareness

An innovative approach to social emotional learning and classroom management, administrators will

learn to instruct and support staff in teaching innovative, research-based classroom management

techniques that provide a foundation for reducing stress, while enhancing mental concentration,

emotional control, and mutual respect. The breathing, stretching, concentration, and relaxation

techniques run 30 seconds to three minutes in duration, thus allowing for smooth and easy

integration during school-day transitions. The techniques are developmentally graduated for Pre-

Kindergarten through 12th grade students. Calm Classroom has been implemented in 68 Chicago

Public Schools and has produced outcomes such as significant declines in suspensions and code

of conduct violations. Teachers consistently report that students are calmer and more focused in

the classrooms, and are less stressed and physically and verbally disruptive. Calm Classroom easily

integrates and enhances both the PBIS and CHAMPS approaches.

Flipped Classroom—Jon Bergmann

Learn from Flipped Classroom Pioneer Jon Bergmann as he walks through his transformation from a

20-year lecturer to a flipped class pioneer.  He will take you on his journey and show how the flipped

class can transform today’s educational climate. The flipped class allows teachers to have more face-

to-face time with students, allows for real differentiation, causes student to take responsibility for

their learning, and allows students to master material.

Gangs and Social Media—Kenneth Boudreau, Chicago Police Department

A presentation on street gangs in Chicago and the impact of social media on public schools.

Innovative Approaches Using NWEA—James Gilliat

This session will provide participants insights into how data can enhance student achievement

through RIT Band mathematics instruction, Lexile and Close reading, aspects of Differentiated

Instruction, and Targeting Students for Success - Meets to Exceeds.

Writing Instruction for Common Core & RTI—Michael Gladstein

Effective writing and executive functioning are inseparably intertwined. Executive functioning is the

ability to engage in purposeful, self-regulated, and goal-directed behaviors. This is exactly what

good writers do. And you’ll learn how teachers can explicitly instruct students to use self-questioning

and whole-to-part analysis to consciously activate the executive functioning skills that create robust

essays. You’ll see just how easy it is to teach students to be effective, organized, and self-reliant

writers when taught how to leverage oral language skills together with executive functioning skills.

You will walk away with a solid understanding of research-based school-wide writing instruction that

is aligned with the Common Core Standards and the RTI process. These instructional skills can be

used with your students in all tiers of instruction and across subject matter.

Common Core: How Will It Look Different to the School Principal—Tim Shanahan

The new Common Core State Standards for the English Language Arts will require major changes

in resources and instruction. Given these changes principals will need to learn to attend to new

features and issues when they do walk-throughs and classroom observations, when they discuss

instruction with teachers, and when they seek resources (textbooks and professional development).

This presentation will explain the major changes being brought about by the Common Core to

identify key features that will have to be observed and supported in the future.

Principal Eligibility Process—Nell McKitrick, Alicia Winckler

This session will provide an overview of the CPS Principal Eligibility Process, with a focus on the new

“Day-In-Life” simulation. This new update builds upon the current live assessment center model with

more dynamic and integrated assessments that mirror the complexity of the principal’s job. This

session’s purpose is to educate interested applicants on the process and recent updates.

age learning—creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration. In this session, Dr. Tim Clark

will share the results of his district’s BYOT implementation with specific classroom examples. He will also

describe successful strategies for connecting to engaging online content, maximizing school technology

resources, and managing the BYOT classroom.  If possible, participants should bring their own Internet-

capable handheld devices to this session.

Inspire Literacy Through Technology—Marla Bachrach

See how this proven instructional model delivered through cutting-edge capabilities of the iPad provides an

extraordinary innovative intervention. The digital classroom redefines what is possible in literacy. Students

raise their reading levels by two or more levels in a single year.

REACH ongoing Teacher Development—Administrators as Instructional Coaches—Katherine Solimine-Welsh, Dr. Stephen Zrike

Developing teachers requires both a formal evaluation process, as well as creating a system for providing

teachers with ongoing quality, bite-sized feedback. Using Paul Bambrick’s Leverage Leadership as a guide,

principals in the Pilsen-Little Village (PLV) Network have been honing their ability to provide written and

verbal feedback as part of REACH and their non-evaluative coaching sessions with teachers. A team of

administrators and network staff from PLV will reflect on their work and share tools/resources that have

supported teacher development across their 26 schools.

Rigor Redefined: Meeting the Needs of a 21st Century Learner—Sarah Cacciatore, Daniela Fountain

Common Core Standards are often defined as more rigorous than previous standards. This session will

focus on ways to demonstrate high expectations and instructional strategies for students to demonstrate

understanding. As we develop a common understanding of rigor, we will also explore ways to increase rigor

in the classroom and to identify levels of rigor as they relate to student learning targets. We will also discuss

how to differentiate between student, teacher, and parent perceptions of rigor.

Foundations for Academic Success: CPS office of Student Health and Wellness— Dr. Stephanie Whyte

Recognizing that healthy students are better learners, CPS established the Office of Student Health and

Wellness in July 2012, led by CPS Chief Health Officer Dr. Stephanie A. Whyte. This session will provide an

overview of the CPS Office of Student Health and Wellness, with a special focus on efforts to strengthen

physical education (PE) and sexual health education. Specifically, we will discuss plans to strengthen PE through

implementation of a new PE scope and sequence and review our Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Project,

an education and testing opportunity for high schools to help reduce rates of STIs amongst adolescents.

Proposed Common Core State Standards for Science, Grades 6–12— Christopher Clemons

As we move closer to the adoption and implementation of the Common Core State Standards for Science

education, administrators and teachers will begin to align new and existing curriculum in the proposed

framework. We will examine the proposed standards and explore ways to provide both teachers and

iPads: A 21st Century Learning Device & iPad Panel—Rob Residori iPad usage across CPS has grown at a fantastic rate, and schools are integrating mobile devices to transform

teaching and learning across the curriculum. Rob Residori from the CPS Ed Tech Department will lead a panel

of teachers and experts who will share iPad strategies that support differentiated instruction, increase student

engagement and motivation, and shift the ownership of learning from teachers to students. The panel will share

their schools’ iPad integration journeys, including lessons learned and the positive impacts that this technology

has brought to their students.

LIteracy Shifts - Strategies That Work—Dr. Sue Wood

As a long-time educator and administrator, Dr. Wood has worked with a lot of literacy strategies and worked with teachers

so they understand that literacy is about both reading and writing, regardless of the content area. In this session, Dr. Wood

will offer some strategies to help you help your teachers implement the literacy shifts in their classrooms, and discuss how

you and your teachers will be able to measure results.

Hot Topics in CPS Labor Relations—Joseph Moriarty, Lara Shayne

This session will review new provisions in the CTU contract that principals have requested assistance on most

frequently since the contract was approved in October 2012. Topics include sick leave and short-term disability,

employee discipline, high school and elementary model schedules, the Academic Calendar, preparation periods,

lesson planning, and more.

Common Core and Implications for ELLs: How Can the Common Core Lead to Success for ELLs?—Elizabeth Cardenas-Lopez, Elisabeth Trost-Shahata

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are a tall order for all teachers and learners as we consider how to raise the

rigor and increase the knowledge base of all students.  Especially daunting is the challenge faced by English language

learners: they need to acquire English language at the same time that they are acquiring disciplinary knowledge and

skills. How to do this most effectively has not yet been determined, but many research entities are taking on the

task of understanding how to do this better. We will present research from World-Class Instructional Design and

Assessment (WIDA), Understanding Language, and others to bring you up-to-date on how best to provide appropriate

scaffolding for ELLs to gain access to CCSS, while at the same time addressing their language development needs.

The Eight Mathematical Practices in Classroom observation—Sarah Cacciatore, Daniela Fountain

The Eight Mathematical Practices (8MPs) offer a means of approaching problems, so this session will embark on

an in-depth exploration of what the 8MPs mean for teachers and students. We will also examine components

8:45 – 10:00 AM - brEAKOuTsEssION412 13CPS Safety: The Holistic Approach—Jadine Chou

The district offers a suite of free digital resources available to all students and teachers that can engage K-12

students and provide relevant content for any curriculum aligned to the Common Core State Standards. This

session will feature a tour of the various resources, consider best practices to encourage student and teacher

use, and help you take steps to develop a strategy to integrate these resources into your school’s unit and lesson

plans to help students become better readers, thinkers, and learners.

An Examination of Common Core Aligned Instructional Practices for Diverse Learners: A Principal’s Toolkit—Ethel Barker, Eboney Lofton

This presentation reflects an examination of the intersection of learner profiles (the who), the infusion of Universal

Design Principles (the conditions and the where), and the use of Common Core aligned instructional strategies

(the what and the how) to address student need—particularly the needs of struggling readers—from a strengths-

based perspective. Participants will be provided with tools that can be utilized to provide meaningful feedback

to instructors of students who struggle with skill acquisition in the area of literacy. Participants will also gain

insight into the appropriate use of resources within the classroom and the school, at large, to accomplish the

common goal of providing access to the Common Core State Standards for all learners.

Innovation Through Arts Partnerships—Urban Gateways

Looking for ways to improve and expand arts learning in your school? Explore the essential ingredients for

developing and sustaining long-term arts programs and partnerships, such as in-school and out-of-school

content and delivery, Common Core alignment and assessment, and the dynamics of working with nonprofit

arts providers. Join Urban Gateways to exchange ideas and resources through a panel discussion with staff

and faculty from the Horace Greeley Elementary School and Urban Gateways as they describe and reflect on

their partnership of over 15 years. Programs are led by professional artists in music, dance, theater, literary

arts, visual arts, and digital media, serving 57,000 students and teachers annually through in-school and out-of-

school residencies, community school partnerships, touring performances, teacher professional development,

and apprenticeship programs.

The Common Core Classroom—How Will It Look Different?—Dr. Sue Wood

We’ve been talking about the forthcoming changes because of Common Core. We know about the shifts, the

Standards for Mathematical Practice, the Anchor Reading Standards, and the standards themselves. But what

does all of that mean for the classroom? How will learning look? How could it look? How will instruction look?

How could it look? How should it look? As administrators who have to be able to observe teaching and learning

in the Common Core classroom, you need to think about what you might expect to see and why. What will be

your evidence of Common Core instruction? What will be your evidence of Common Core learning?
