Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,
It is that time of the year when we are once again asked to formally announce this year’s Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Appeal. I do so, acknowledging that the world has changed radically over the past 10 months. In introducing the campaign, I also wish to acknowledge that many people from our parish have been adversely affected by the COVID - 19 Pandemic. Having said that, I think all of us recognizethe fact that we are part of a bigger church, and theongoing need for support is probably more urgent thanever. I understand that many are in a position to respondand give. Many are not.
In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus teaches that love of God and love of neighbor are intimately intertwined. This past year especially, we as a parish and as individuals have been called to love God more deeply by serving our brothers and sisters in extraordinary ways.While our work to support the least of our brothers and sisters is a lifetime vocation, the pandemic has brought about some very unique challenges. The Pandemic has brought suffering and sickness right to our doorstep, and our parish family has responded to this crisis with profound sacrificial love. This same spirit of sacrifice is what animates so much of the charitable, pastoral, and educational work happening throughout our larger Church, which is made possible through the Annual Stewardship Appeal.
Today, I ask that we untie as a community of faith to learn more about the practical ways that we can support our Catholic Church here in our Archdiocese of New York by supporting the Annual Stewardship Appeal. Supporting the Annual Appeal will not only benefit our Archdiocese but will hopefully promote unity for our Church. Any gift made towards the 2021 Appeal will benefit:
● Much needed COVID-19 relief within the Archdiocese● Catholic Charities including the prison apostolate● Needy parishes● Pastoral, Charitable, and Administrative Support● Funding for Regional Schools● Home for Retired Priests
Each family in our parish will be given the opportunity to make a pledge to the Cardinal's Annual Stewardship Appeal campaign and help us achieve our goal of $56,000. The Archdiocesan goal is $20 million. Many of you may have already received a letter from Cardinal Dolan requesting you to help this cause. I also pray that the Holy Spirit will inspire you to open up your hearts to ways you can give to the Cardinalʼs Annual Stewardship Appeal. We will be talking about the Cardinalʼs Appeal in the upcoming weeks, but I must mention that 100% of your contribution goes towards the case of support as outlined above. Your donations are segregated from any expenses of outreach to victims of clergy sexual abuse or compensation to those victims. I think you all for the sacrifices you make each day, and I invite you to support the Appeal.
Thursday, February 11th is the Feast of our Lady of Lourdes. For the past 28 years, February 11th has been celebrated as the World Day of Prayer for the Sick. This is an observation that was first introduced by Pope John Paul II in 1993 as a way for believers to offer prayers for the sick and for those suffering from any and all kinds of illnesses and infirmities. This week, letʼs pray for all of the sick in a special way, particularly those who continue to suffer from the COVID - 19 virus.

Queridos feligreses y amigos de Ascension,
Es esa época del año en la que una vez más se nos pide que anunciemos formalmente la Apelación Anual de Mayordomía del Cardenal de este año. Lo hago, reconociendo que el mundo ha cambiado radicalmente durante los últimos 10 meses. Al presentar la campaña, también deseo reconocer que muchas personas de nuestra parroquia se han visto afectadas negativamente por la pandemia COVID-19. Habiendo dicho eso, creo que todos reconocemos el hecho de que somos parte de una iglesia más grande, y la necesidad continua de apoyo es probablemente más urgente que nunca. Entiendo que muchos están en condiciones de responder y dar. Muchos no lo son.
En el Evangelio de Mateo, Jesús enseña que el amor a Dios y el amor al prójimo están íntimamente entrelazados. Especialmente este año pasado, como parroquia y como individuos hemos sido llamados a amar a Dios más profundamente sirviendo a nuestros hermanos y hermanas de maneras extraordinarias.Si bien nuestro trabajo para apoyar al más pequeño de nuestros hermanos y hermanas es una vocación de por vida, la pandemia ha traído algunos desafíos muy singulares. La pandemia ha traído sufrimiento y enfermedad directamente a nuestra puerta, y nuestra familia parroquial ha respondido a esta crisis con un profundo amor sacrificado. Este mismo espíritu de sacrificio es lo que anima gran parte del trabajo caritativo, pastoral y educativo que se lleva a cabo en toda nuestra Iglesia más grande, que es posible gracias a la Campaña Anual de Mayordomía.
Hoy, pido que nos desatemos como comunidad de fe para aprender más sobre las formas prácticas en que podemos apoyar a nuestra Iglesia Católica aquí en nuestra Arquidiócesis de Nueva York apoyando la Campaña Anual de Mayordomía. Apoyar la Campaña Anual no solo beneficiará a nuestra Arquidiócesis sino que, con suerte, promoverá la unidad de nuestra Iglesia. Cualquier donación realizada para la Apelación de 2021 se beneficiará:
● Alivio COVID-19 muy necesario dentro de laArquidiócesis
● Caridades Católicas, incluido el apostolado de la prisión● Parroquias necesitadas● Apoyo pastoral, caritativo y administrativo● Financiamiento para escuelas regionales● Hogar para sacerdotes jubilados

También oro para que el Espíritu Santo los inspire a abrir sus corazones a las formas en que pueden contribuir a la Campaña Anual de Mayordomía del Cardenal. El jueves 11 de febrero es la fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes. Durante los últimos 28 años, el 11 de febrero se ha celebrado como la Jornada Mundial de Oración por los Enfermos. Esta es una observación que fue introducida por primera vez por el Papa Juan Pablo II en 1993 como una forma de que los creyentes ofrezcan oraciones por los enfermos y por aquellos que sufren de cualquier tipo de enfermedad y dolencia. Esta semana, oremos por todos los enfermos de una manera especial, en particular por aquellos que continúan sufriendo el virus COVID-19.

Ash Wednesday
This year, Ash Wednesday will be celebrated on February 17th. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of our 40 day Lenten journey. In order to accommodate those wishing to receive ashes, in order to avoid large crowds, and in keeping with the practice of social distancing, we have added a few additional services. The following will be the schedule for Ash Wednesday.

12:00 Noon Mass (English - with music)

The 12 Noon Mass will be livestreamed. Ashes will be distributed in the same way that Holy Communion is distributed. Once again we remind you that if you have been in close contact with anyone who has tested positive for Covid 19, if you are experiencing symptoms, or not feeling well in anyway, it is advisable to stay at home and offer some special prayers as the Lenten season begins.
JAZZ MASS CANCELED
Due to one of our Jazz musicians having been exposed to the COVID virus, and out of an abundance of caution, we are cancelling the Jazz Mass this month. We hope to resume the (monthly) Jazz Mass on Sunday, March 7th. Thank you for your understanding.
Miércoles de cenizaEste año, el Miércoles de Ceniza se celebrará el 17 de febrero. El Miércoles de Ceniza marca el comienzo de nuestro viaje de Cuaresma de 40 días. Con el fin de acoger a quienes deseen recibir cenizas, para evitar grandes aglomeraciones, y de acuerdo con la práctica del distanciamiento social, hemos agregado algunos servicios adicionales.
