Veterinarian Veterinarians are charged with providing animals with medical care, which may involve both general health check-ups as well as emergency and live-saving care through surgeries and medical procedures. There are different types of veterinarians, as some work in clinics and primarily see pets, while others work with livestock animals or may work in the food safety and inspection industry. All veterinarians must have a solid understanding of animal science, anatomy, biology, and physiology. They typically learn these skills by completing a bachelor's degree and then obtaining a four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Wildlife Biologist Zoologists and wildlife biologists are scientists who are interested in studying different types of animals, natural environments and ecosystems, and the interaction that occurs between animals and their environment. There are many different types of zoologists and wildlife biologists, as these scientists typically specialize in a specific species or part of zoology, entomology, ornithology, teratology, or histology. This job requires a high level understanding of science and the scientific process, as zoologists and wildlife biologists engage heavily in research and often publish their findings in scientific journals and papers. Agricultural and Food Scientist Agricultural and food scientists are involved in studying different types of agricultural products and methods, which often involves studying farm animals and livestock. Some of these scientists work specifically as animal scientists, which entails researching farm animals to understand their development, health, and nutrition and then providing farmers with guidance as to how to care for animals most effectively to produce the best products. They are also involved with making sure the living conditions of animals are humane and safe.

Environmental Scientist Environmental scientists conduct research to identify, control, or eliminate sources of pollutants or hazards affecting the environment or public health. Their research generally involves determining data collection methods; collecting and analyzing air, water, and soil samples; analyzing environmental data gathered by others; and analyzing for correlations to human activity. They also need to prepare reports and presentations that explain their findings. Environmental scientists also develop plans to prevent, control, or fix environmental problems like air pollution. They may also advise government officials that make policy, and businesses that need to follow regulations or improve their practices. Some conduct environmental inspections of businesses. Many assess the potential effects of development projects to prevent creating new problems. Some environmental scientists and specialists focus on environmental issues, while others focus on issues relating to human health. Either way, they work on critical issues, solving some of the most important problems of our day.

Who: NASA and Rice University Mobile Planetarium 6:00PM Earth’s Wild Ride (K-3rd Grade) Imagine Earth were a distant place you once called home but could never visit again. What would you remember most about the planet, and how would you describe it to your grandchildren? Set on the surface of the Moon in the year 2081, a grandfather and granddaughter watch a solar eclipse from scenic cliffs overlooking their moon colony. Conversation leads to contrasts between the moon, the only home the granddaughter knows, and the Earth, where the grandfather has spent most of his life. As they watch the Moon's shadow move across Earth, the grandfather tells stories of crashing asteroids, erupting volcanoes, roaring dinosaurs, electrifying lightning and booming thunder. Each experience begins with a telescope view of the dynamic Earth in stark contrast with the unchanging lunar landscape. EARTH'S WILD RIDE is like many tales shared by grandparents over the centuries, except "the old country" is really another planet, always visible from the moon base, but totally unlike the granddaughter's world. While learning about eclipses, the ice age, Earth's water cycle and differences between the Earth and Moon, the audience is taken on a roller-coaster-like ride through canyons of raging rivers and hot flowing lava. Career(s): Astronaut

Astronauts are mainly responsible for regulating and operating space stations. Depending on their role, their job duties can vary slightly from becoming a commander and pilot astronaut, a mission specialist or a payload specialist. When astronauts aren’t in space, they are continually training and are involved in other tasks at NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA) or the specific space agency they work for. This includes assisting with scientific research, preparing for a mission or interacting with the crew that is currently in space. Being an astronaut is dangerous and requires some very unique qualities and characteristics to ensure survival in space. These mainly include: teamwork skills, intelligence and initiative, communication skills and leadership skills.

Who: NASA and Rice University Mobile Planetarium 6:30PM Dinosaur Prophecy (2nd-4th Grade) Long before dinosaurs' massive extinction 65 million years ago, many individual species simply disappeared. Visit dinosaur graveyards, study their bones, and reconstruct how these creatures lived and died to solve four famous cold cases from the age of the dinosaurs in DINOSAUR PROPHECY. "Today we are learning to cope with extreme weather, from Category Five hurricanes to devastating tsunamis," said Dr. Carolyn Sumners, director of the Houston Museum of Natural Science's Burke Baker Planetarium. "The Dinosaur Prophecy examines the deaths of these dominant and ferocious creatures, which tell of the Earth's enormous power and potential for dramatic and devastating change. Each disaster that affected the dinosaurs is a warning for human survival." Viewers discover the lives of multiple species of dinosaurs, from the Coelophysis of 205 million years ago to the Allosaurus and Diplodocus of the mid-Jurassic period. Viewers will also see the feathered Sinornithosaurus of China and the T. rex and Triceratops that survived and thrived until the final extinction of all dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Career(s): Archeologist

An archeologist researches the culture and past human life in history from remains, architectural features, artifacts, and structures found in excavation or underwater recovery or other discovery. They carefully record an object’s information and location then authenticate, date and identify the objects and structures that an excavation has recovered. Recordings would include an artifact’s function, shape, size, and decoration and can give descriptions based on an artifact’s attributes or physical properties, like the materials they were made of. Archeologists answer specific questions about past societies and cultures according to their survey and research and write and/or publish reports that record site methodology, history and artifact analysis results. They would also give their recommendations and findings to colleagues and the general public for interpreting

findings and conserving. An archaeologist works very closely with anthropologist; they would draw and update maps of the site of features, stratum surfaces and unit profiles. A collection would be made of the artifacts of various materials and be placed and marked in bags identifying where they were discovered. An archeologist can work in museums, parks, historic sites, public education, or manage exhibits. Others work in laboratories studying samples or at archaeology field sites. Archeologists travel all over the world.

Who: NASA and Rice University Mobile Planetarium 7:00PM Force Five (4th-6th Grade) Feel the Fury! Get ready to take cover when you see nature go FORCE FIVE, from our partners, Houston Museum of Natural Science and Rice University. Extreme weather takes center stage in this full dome animated show revealing images not seen by naked eye due to their life-threatening nature. Using real movies and NASA based images, Force Five offers the audience a vantage that would never be safe in the real world, creating a sense of what it would look and feel like if you were standing in the middle of a deadly storm. "Experience a storm without getting wet!" The show begins by stepping back in time to 1900, when the great hurricane swept through Galveston, killing over 6,000 men, women, and children in one night of terror. Homes collapsed under the incredible force of torrential winds, powerful rain and rising water, and animates how the surge may have looked. It then shows how NASA spacecraft and special aircraft measure hurricanes and predict their paths. We fly with a storm chaser aircraft through the heart of a hurricane. Career(s): Meteorologist

A meteorologist is an individual with specialized education who uses scientific principles to explain, understand, observe or forecast the earth's atmospheric phenomena and/or how the atmosphere affects the earth and life on the planet. Activities of a meteorologist often are classified into a number of specialized areas. A few examples are: air pollution meteorology, global climate modeling, hydrometeorology, and numerical analysis and forecasting. These activities often require additional specialized education in related subjects.

Then, shrink into a cell to see its nucleus and DNA within. Discover how DNA programs the body's cells to form the circulatory and nervous systems. Then watch from inside as we use lasers to fight disease at the cellular level. Career(s): Doctor

A physician, medical practitioner, medical doctor, or simply doctor, is a professional who practices medicine, which is concerned with promoting, maintaining, or restoring health through the study, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of disease, injury, and other physical and mental impairments. Physicians may focus their practice on certain disease categories, types of patients, and methods of treatment—known as specialties—or they may assume responsibility for the provision of continuing and comprehensive medical care to individuals, families, and communities—known as general practice. Medical practice properly requires both a detailed knowledge of the academic disciplines, such as anatomy and physiology, underlying diseases and their treatment—the science of

medicine—and also a decent competence in its applied practice—the art or craft of medicine. Both the role of the physician and the meaning of the word itself vary around the world. Degrees and other qualifications vary widely, but there are some common elements, such as medical ethics requiring that physicians show consideration, compassion, and benevolence for their patients.

Who: The University of Detroit Jesuit Robocubs Team #1701

What: Open Exhibit and Demonstrations (6-8PM) FIRST Robotics is an international robotics league consisting of over 7,000 teams in our league, and over 30,000 total. The fundamentals of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is getting young students engaged and excited about engineering and the future. Each year, a new game is released with given tasks. Each team must design, build, and program their robot within 6 weeks before competing. Career(s): Robotic Engineering See Rover the Robot above. Robotics Technician A robotics technician has duties similar to a robotics engineer, but this individual will be more focused on testing and repairing robotics systems while helping robotics engineers create and design them. Since she would then be thoroughly knowledgeable about the robotics systems that she worked on, she would spend quite a bit of time working with the customers to ensure that the robots are working properly, usually serving as the liaison between the customer and the robotics engineers. Software Developer This individual focuses more on developing the software behind the commands sent to the robotics device. The robot’s computer system is pivotal as it essentially provides the brain behind the operation. When a human tells it to do something, whether verbally or by typing in some keystrokes, what the software developer has created inside of it determines how accurately those instructions are carried out. She also ensures that all instructions will be carried out as safely and precisely as possible. Sales Engineer Although these individuals are more focused on the sales aspect of robots and robotic products, they need to be exceptionally knowledgeable about them in order to communicate what ways they will benefit those they are selling to. Sales engineers also need to know how to make adjustments to their merchandise to ensure that it meets the expectations made of it. Individuals with this type of robotics job tend to travel quite a bit with about half of their time spent away from home, depending on what they are selling and to whom.

Building a mathematical model involves a multi-stage process whereby you study a problem, write down the equations, use them to predict what will happen, see if your predictions agree with experiments, modify the equations if necessary, make new predictions, and so on.

The "system" can be applied to many different fields. For example, most financial companies hire mathematicians to study financial models and make predictions based on statistical evidence. In physics or engineering you might investigate how heat is dissipated through the heat shield of a space vehicle. In physiology you may apply the laws of fluid dynamics to describe how blood flows into vessels and what happens when blood pressure is increased. In economics you might predict how a strike in the automotive industry will affect other parts of the economy.

Statistics The proliferation of statistics in everything ranging from business to government has induced many organizations

to seek math majors for employment. Statisticians use surveys (e.g. opinion polls) to predict the patterns of

behavior of large groups based on relatively small samples. They ask questions such as

how can we be sure that what we predict from our small sample is true of the

population being sampled? Probability theory provides the theoretical foundation for

statistics.

Career(s): Architect People need places to live, work, play, learn, shop, and eat. Architects are responsible for designing these places. They work on public or private projects and design both indoor and outdoor spaces. Architects can be commissioned to design anything from a single room to an entire complex of buildings. Architects discuss the objectives, requirements, and budget of a project with clients. In some cases, architects provide various predesign services, such as feasibility and environmental impact studies, site selection, cost analyses, and design requirements.

After discussing and agreeing on the initial proposal with clients, architects develop final construction plans that show the building’s appearance and details for its construction. Accompanying these plans are drawings of the structural system; air-conditioning, heating, and ventilating systems; electrical systems; communications systems; plumbing; and, possibly, site and landscape plans. In developing designs, architects must follow state and local building codes, zoning laws, fire regulations, and other ordinances, such as those requiring easy building access for people who are disabled.

Computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) and building information modeling (BIM) have replaced traditional drafting paper and pencil as the most common methods for creating designs and construction drawings. However, hand-drawing skills are still used, especially during the conceptual stages of a project.

As construction proceeds, architects may visit building sites to ensure that contractors follow the design, keep to the schedule, use the specified materials, and meet work-quality standards. The job is not complete until all construction is finished, required tests are conducted, and construction costs are paid.

Architects also may help clients get construction bids, select contractors, and negotiate construction contracts. Architects often collaborate with workers in related occupations, such as civil engineers, urban and regional planners, interior designers, and landscape architects.
