On Thursday, January 7, the Tampa Bay Clean Cities Coalition (TBCCC) attended the grand opening of the area’s

newest compressed natural gas (CNG) station. The GAIN Clean Fuel station, located at 8346 E. Martin Luther King Junior

Boulevard, was built through a partnership between Core-Mark and U.S. Gain. TBCCC was joined by members Clearwater Gas

System, TECO/People’s Gas, and the Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County to celebrate the station

opening. TBCCC coordinator Steve Reich acted as Master of Ceremonies for the event, which featured presentations from

CNG experts and industry leaders. U.S. Gain representatives also demonstrated the CNG fueling process for heavy- and light-

duty CNG vehicles.

TBCCC coordinator Steve Reich participated in a Bay News 9 Consumer Wise segment that aired December 29 on the cost

savings of hybrid and electric vehicles. Host Angie Moreschi conducted the interview at CUTR, which also included a

demonstration on how to charge an electric vehicle at one of the Beard Parking Garage’s newly installed stations.

The Tampa Tribune interviewed Steve Reich for an article on the National Biodiesel Confer-

ence and Expo being held January 25-28 at the Tampa Convention Center. Steve explained

that diversification of fuel for the nation’s vehicles is the smart long-term strategy. Biodiesel

production in particular does not require expensive infrastructure or drilling. USF’s own Bull

Runners have been fueled by biodiesel since 2002. The convention brings together biodiesel

industry and research leaders to discuss the latest technologies and market considerations, and includes a poster session

and vehicle showcase.

On January 26, Alex Kolpakov attended the Zero Emission Bus Demo held at Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority

(PSTA) headquarters in St. Petersburg. The event featured the New Flyer “Xcelsior” battery-electric bus and included a

short ride in the vehicle. New Flyer representatives were onsite to explain the vehicle’s new technology and answer ques-

tions. The demonstration attracted about 35 people, including PSTA’s CEO, maintenance staff, local elected officials,

representatives from the transportation industry, and environmental advocacy groups. This is the fourth different zero

emission, all-electric bus that PSTA has checked out over the past year. The transit agency replaced 13 of its oldest diesel

buses with hybrid-electric “Smartbuses” last summer, bringing its total hybrid bus count to 61, which is about 30 per-

cent of PSTA’s fleet.
