Jesus expands on the law

that his followers knew well. As God loves all people without partiality—the bad and the good, the just and the unjust—so are all who follow him to do. Certainly this can be difficult, but it is not impossible. For by Christ’s sacrifice, we have been made chil-dren of the Father. With his help, and God’s grace, we are capable of striving for the per-fection in love to which we are called.

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT In the spirit of St. Teresa of Kolkata, we honor Christ by com-ing together as one faith community with the pledge to reach out to the lonely and less fortunate. Our mission is to engage in unselfish acts of kindness and compassion, sharing our blessings with a humble heart.

MISION PARROQUIAL

FOOLISHNESS Sometimes the idea of repentance seems old-fashioned, naïve, even foolish. But if you’re looking for real foolishness, you’ll find it in to-day’sreadings. We begin with Leviticus and the admonition, “Take no revenge and

cherish no grudge” (Leviticus 19:18). We’ve heard that mes-sage before, of course, so we might forget how far it is from the so-called “practical realities of life.” Saint Paul warns us about being practical, though. Whoever considers oneself wise had better “become a fool,” be-cause “the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God” (1 Corinthians 3:18, 19).

This “foolishness” continues in the Gospel: “Offer no resistance to one who is evil” (Matthew 5:39). In fact, offer the other cheek when you’ve been slapped. Hand over your coat as well as your shirt. Be like God, who sends sunshine and rain on the bad as well as the good. “So be perfect,” says Jesus, “just as your heavenly Father is perfect”(5:48). FORGIVENESS People who cannot forgive others break the bridge over which they must pass if they are to reach heaven; for everyone has a

need to be forgiven. —George Herbert

Baptized in the Lord Dominic James Gasbarro

they begin their journey with Christ. PRE-BAPTISM CLASS is required for fir st-time par-ents. The next scheduled session will be on Tuesday, March 3, at 7:00pm St. Pius X school building. ASH WEDNESDAY Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving: these disciplines, prescribed by Jesus himself in the Sermon on the Mount, have been em-

braced by all the saints at the beginning of every Lent for almost two thousand years. But mention Lent, and many re- act with a grimace or slight shudder— even now, years after

official obligations have been reduced to a minimum! No wonder the Eastern

Rite’s “Lenten An- nouncement” sounds surprising: “Let us receive with joy, O faithful people, the divinely inspired announcement of Lent! Let us fast from

passions as well as food, taking pleasure in the good works of the Spirit, and accomplishing them in love!” Saint John

Chrysostom elaborates: “Do you fast? Give proof by your works. If you see a poor person, take pity. An enemy, be rec-onciled. A friend gaining honor, don’t be jealous.” A positive

approach! May the saints help us keep such a Lent! —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SHEPHERD’S HEART--There is a box in the back of St. Pius X Church where you can donate individually wrapped food items, toiletries, socks, etc. Monetary and gro-cery store gift cards are greatly appreciated and may be placed in the offertory basket in an en-velope marked Shepherd’s Heart. You may also be interested in helping out by joining us to knit and crochet warm items to be distributed to those in need. The group will meet monthly, the same day the lunches are prepared. No experience needed – free lessons will be provided. We will pack lunches on Sunday, February 23 at 12 noon in St. Pius Church Hall. The knit-ting group will gather at 12:30. MONTHLY FREE BUFFET DINNER—Come join us for a free meal and an evening of fellowship at St. Cathe-rine of Siena Church Hall on Sunday, February 23 at 4:30pm. Living Stones will continue to provide the meal to our neighbors in need that evening and on the last Sunday of every month. All parishioners and neighbors are welcome. Hope to see you there! TERESA’S TABLE is our meal ministry for the pa-rishioners of Saint Teresa of Kolkata Parish. To provide for our sisters and brothers in need we will always have nearly 100 complete, nutritious meals and soups in our freezer. Meals are available for delivery to the homes of those who may be coming home from the hospital, who

are grieving the loss of a loved one, who are recovering from an ordeal, who are needing some companionship, or who are just strug-gling in some way. If you or a parishioner you know needs a little help from our kitch-en, contact the Parish Office and leave a mes-sage for Patty Schwerin, and she will get in

touch with our meal team and delivery team. Just reheat and relax, and know that you are loved! The 40 Days For Life peaceful Prayer Vigil begins Ash Wednesday February 26 from 7am to 7 pm at Planned Parenthood, 933 Liberty Avenue. Join your fellow Chris-tians to pray for an end to abortion. On Tuesday, Febru-ary 25 we will have Mass at Epiphany Church at 5:30pm followed by a Eucharistic Procession to Planned Parenthood led by 40 PRIESTS! Prayer at these clinics has saved over 17,000 babies (that we know of). For more information, please contact Mary Ann Mulkerin at 412-526-2136.

YOUTH MI NISTRY—Inviting all high school aged stu-dents, 9-12th grade to join a new Youth Group at St. Teresa of Kolkata parish. The first gathering will be held on Ash Wednesday, February 26 from 6:30-8:30pm in St. Catherine’s gym. A visit will be made to the church at 7pm to get ashes. Afterwards, we will return to the gym for some fun and an overview of future gatherings. We hope you can make it! For more information, contact us at [email protected], or at the parish office. WOMEN’S RETREAT—The St. Teresa of Kolkata Wom-en’s Guild will host the Annual Women’s Retreat on Saturday, March 21. We invite all women to keep this date open and invite your friends to join us for this special day of prayer and reflection with Father John Marcucci. Look for more infor-mation with next week’s bulletin. LENTEN CONTAINERS—are available in the vestibule of each church building to take home with you during Lent. As you offer something up, and don’t buy that candy, snack, or something else you can do without, place what you would have spent in the container. All money collected goes towards lower-ing the debt. Containers can be returned any time during Lent. JOIN OUR FUNERAL SINGING MINISTRY “STK Fu-neral Singers”--The STK Funeral Singers are ordinary people who sing the hymns and sung prayers at a funeral Mass. They are NOT a Choir. They are trying to do a Corporal Work of Mercy to “bury the dead.” As members of St. Teresa of Kolka-ta, we extend our parish’s compassion to all families in their time of sadness, by both our music and our presence. There are no rehearsals; just sing as you do at Sunday Mass. You may learn a few new tunes as you go along. You will be contacted when there is a funeral at any of our church sites, and the time, by email or phone. You are most welcome to sing at

all sites, as you are able, but this is not re-quired. Arriving 10-15 minutes ahead of time is appreciated. It is understood that a person is not available all the time. Currently, there are 17 members, and it would be wonderful if we could have our current group grow to more than

30 as we expand the ministry to all of our church sites. Come…Join the Team! For questions, please phone the office and leave your message for Julianna Haag. ST. PIUS X BOOK CLUB—will meet on Thursday, February 27, at 7:30pm in the school building at St. Pius X Church. The book selection for discussion is Coincidence of Coconut Cake by Amy Reichert. New members are always welcome!
