2010 MAN OF THE YEAR AWARDReno A. (Jay) Reda Jr.

While growing up in the Youngstown area, Jay was blessed to have Mill Creek Park literally in his back yard. Though he was an inner city youth he could hike and play in one of the most beautiful parts of urban Mahoning County. With his dad and his Grandfather, Jay and his brother spent much time exploring the Park and devel-oping a deep love for the outdoors that would direct his life’s work in protection and conserva-tion of all things outdoors. In a natural progression, Jay joined the Ohio Division of Wildlife where he worked for 26 years,mostofthemasawildlifeofficer;retir-ing in 2008. Never one to shy from innovation, hewasthefirstofficerinnorthernOhiotohaveacellphoneandtheonlyofficertohaveafully

certifiedpoliceK-9partner.Earlyon,hesawtheneedtoeducatethepublicabouttheimportanceofusingournaturalresourceswiselyandnottakingthemforgranted;ataskwhichcouldonlybeac-complished by making people aware of the great resources available in their Ohio back yard. Bonds with the media and other Ohio agencies were developed to achieve that goal. Ultimately this led to working with Geauga County to fashion, from a 5 day fair, a year round facility where both local and inner city youth could learn the wonders of the outdoors. Jay’s passion is contagious, he has man-aged to raise over $750, 000 to build and expand the Natural Resources Area at The Great Geauga County Fair which he continues to manage in retirement. He has also worked closely with the City of Cleveland to get natural resources related programs to the masses. He volunteers on several committees to highlight the tremendous bounty of Lake Erie andpromotethehugefinancialbenefitthatnaturalresourcesrelatedtourismcanbring.JayisveryproudtobeoneofthemostdecoratedWildlifeOfficersbutheholdsdearesttheacco-lades bestowed by various public groups. Since 2001 he hasbeenco-host/hostofWHKRadio’s(AM1420)InsidetheGreatOutdoorsSundayMorningshow.This live talk radio is Ohio’s only two-hour live outdoor radio show. This format keeps the importance of protecting our outdoor heritage in perspective for listeners throughout north-central Ohio. He also remainsactiveasaninstructor(primarilyforyouthandwomen)infirearmshandlingandselfde-fense courses. InretirementJayalongwithhiswifeMichelleenjoyretrievertraining, hunting, fishingandtrapping. He is seldom seen without Bruin & Grizz, his golden retrievers at his side while spreading the “gospel of the great outdoors.”Dad and Grandpa are gone. Too bad, they would be proud, not just of Jay but of the legacy they helped shape for others.

2010 PRESIDENT’S AWARDRichard W. Deacon

Dick Deacon was born on Cleveland’s eastside. After losing his father at age 4, Dick was forced to attend the “school of hard knocks” at an early age. He started his career as journeyman carpenter, but after doing a kitchen for a Shaker Heights car dealer at age 26, he decided to try his skills in the automobile business. At age 32, Dick and his twin brother Bob, with roughly $4,000 in their com-binedsavings,purchasedaChryslerdealershipinMayfieldVillage. Today, brothers Dick and Bob, along with sons, Tom and Jim, continue to run Deacon’s Chrysler Jeep and are in their 47th year of business.Throughout his career, Dick always had a passion for out-doors,withhuntingandfishingbeinghisfavoriteactivities.Dick’s hunting expeditions have included everything from hunting ducks from Canada to Mexico, to harvesting elk and mule deer in the Rockies, to pursuing quail in Georgia andpheasantsintheheartland.HisfishingexpeditionshaveincludedflyfishingforRainbowsandSalmoninAlaska,toPerchandWalleyefishingonourfamedLakeEriealongwithtrophyPikefishinginCanada, tocatchingSnook in the backwaters of the Everglades. He has served on the Board of

Trustees, is a charter member of the Scholarship Committee and has served on the Activities Committee for many years organizing the Trap and Skeet Shoot at the A&A Shooting Club every August along with helping his son, Jim organize the Spring and Fall Deep Spring Trout Club outings. He is a former member of the Hawthorne Valley Skeet Club, a member of the NRA and a supporter of Ducks Unlimited.Dick has volunteered his time at the Coonskin Hat Brigade sponsored by the Ohio Wildlife Federation,youthfishingprogramsandyouthhunts.Mostspecialwaswatchinghisgrandson,Jeff,callinandharvesthisfirstgooseatanODNRyouthhunt.TheWoodsandWatersClubisthankfulfor members like Dick, who will continue to teach the youth of Ohio awareness of the great outdoors andtheappreciationofourhuntingandfishingheritage.
