A Message from Fr. Underwood
Lent is our time to enter the desert with Christ. As Catholics we have so many beautiful and challenging practices to make the most of Lent. Our primary goal of holiness during this season will lead us to a stronger relationship with our Savior. What are you going to do this Lenten Season to grow in your faith?
1. Ash Wednesday (Feb 16) and Good Friday (April 2) are days of Fast and Abstinence.
2. All Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.
3. A Fast is for all adults age 18 to 59. On days of fast a person is allowed one full meal and two other meals that are sufficient to maintain, but the two other meals when put together should not be equal to the one full meal. Eating between meals is prohibited, but liquids including milk or juices may be taken.
4. All children who have completed their 14th year
are bound by the Law of Abstinence. On days of Abstinence no meat is to be eaten. When for health reasons (or your ability to work would be seriously affected) the law does not oblige you.
5. Walk the Way of the Cross: To nourish your Lent,
we offer the Stations of the Cross at all three parishes in our pastorate. Please join us as we ponder the mysteries of Christ’s Passion and Death.
6. Reconciliation & Parish Penance Service: Lent is
the perfect time to make a good Confession. There is nothing more freeing than having our sins forgiven. Watch the pastorate calendar for opportunities this Lent to make a good Confession. And then… bring your family!
7. Adoration: We have many opportunities to spend in
prayer during Adoration. Watch the bulletin for particular times at all of our parishes - or visit the Adoration Chapel in the St. Elizabeth House (8am-midnight daily) at St. Mary Parish.
8. Little Black Books: Thank you to the Knights of
Columbus for providing the Little Black Books to help our Lenten journey. Please take one home and share this with your family.

Footprints Sewing Group The Annual Baby Shower to benefit First
Choice for Women and Project Gabriel will
begin on February 13 and conclude on April 3. Items
needed are: Diapers, baby wipes, crib sheets, washcloths,
towels, bottles, thermometers, and crib sheets. Donations
can be dropped off at church or the Rectory. Our February
meetings are the 11th and 25th at 9:30 a.m. in St. Agnes

Our school’s 2021 Penny Battle was a huge success,
raising $403.80 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society. Our Grade 2 class scored the most points, and
they were rewarded with a Popcorn Party!
Discounted tickets will be available for purchase in the
back of church after all Masses the weekend of
February 27-28. Tickets will also be sold at the event.

On St. Valentine's Day, the Religious Education classes learned about Love and the Sacrament of Matrimony and each child researched two of the many moral qualities they can develop now that will help them in all current and future relationships and especially in the Sacrament of Marriage:
Kindness Prayerfulness Gentleness Respect Honesty Truthfulness Friendliness Forgiveness Unselfishness Compassion Justice Prudence Self-control Loyalty Patience Courage Listening Faithfulness
We read that God created marriage in Mark 10:6-9 so that the man and woman would become one flesh. That marriage mirrors Christ the Bridegroom's everlasting love for His Church (the Bride). And we read in 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8 that 4 Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; 5 it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrong but rejoices in the right. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends.

The Secular Franciscans will meet
Wednesday, February 24, at 7:00 p.m.
in the St. Joseph Room, at St. Mary’s
Noll Hall. We will listen to “Clare,”
Episode 8 of the Augustine Institute’s
award-winning Radio Theatre production, entitled,
“Brother Francis: The Barefoot Saint of Assisi.”
Anyone interested in learning about St. Francis of
Assisi and his spiritual tradition is welcome to attend

What is Lent?
Lent Begins February 17
Lent is our time of preparation.
We begin a 40-day journey of prayer, fasting and almsgiving on Ash Wednesday to help us deepen our
relationship with Christ. Prayer: Deepens our relationship with God and helps
us to reflect on our lives. Fasting: Removes obstacles between us and God. Giving: Helps us serve those in need and live Jesus’
message of love.

CRS (Catholic Relief Services) RICE BOWL Rice bowls are now available on the tables in Church.
HOW IS THE MONEY USED? Lenten alms go to alleviate hunger and poverty in communities overseas and in the U.S. Seventy-five percent of gifts support CRS’ humanitarian programs around the world. CRS Rice Bowl is Catholic Relief Services’ Lenten program for families and faith communities in the United States who want to put their faith into action.
Fasting & Abstinence
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.
For members of the Catholic Church, the norms on
fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When
fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal. Two
smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal a full
meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are
binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church
from age 14 onwards.
REPENT AND BELIEVE IN THE GOSPEL Lent is the time of year we devote to scrutinizing our lives in the light of our baptism into the death and resurrection of Jesus. Today’s readings are a nice shorthand catechism of what our baptized lives mean. As Noah passed through the waters of the flood to a covenant with God, so did we enter into a covenant, a promised relationship with God through our baptism. Peter’s letter gives an explicit explanation of what our baptism means: it is an appeal we make to God for a clear conscience. How do we obtain this clear conscience? The words proclaimed by Jesus immediately following his temptation show us the way: “Repent, and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15). It might be a good spiritual exercise to keep these readings before us throughout the entire season of Lent, a means to help us return to a life lived by our baptismal promises. Copyright © J. S.
