Dr. Cindy Parker, Pastor Ginger Willetts, Editor

Volume 50, No. 2 February 2020

Which job would you like to do?” What people need to hear instead is the open-ended question, “What do you

feel God is calling you to do?” That question will make life in the church elastic, changing, ever shifting. Ministries

will come and go. But the work that the church does will

be integrally related to the lives of those who join our communities.

“How can we help you make that calling possible?”

The church of the future will be led by people with the instincts of a spiritual director. Leaders will need to be

alive to the movement of God’s Spirit in the lives of those

who attend their churches and they will want to know, “How can we help?”

“The spiritual and religious dots connect in this place.”

Too much of what we do as church is about church as an

end in itself. Some of that is unavoidable. Planning,

budgeting, and reporting are all things that life in “the real world” requires. But they often loom too large. People

who enter our churches need to know how the church’s sacraments and worship enhances the spiritual life.

“You have gifts and we are incomplete without them.”

The church is not a collection of Lone Rangers. It is the Body of Christ. There are contributions that each of us can

make but there are other contributions that can only be made when we work together. The message of the New

Testament is not “you have a gift, but so do I.” The message is “you have a gift and we are incomplete without it.”

You have a gift, beloved, and we are incomplete with it and without you!

I look forward to serving alongside you this year, as we

shine God’s light brightly!

Your partner on the journey,

Pastor Cindy Pastor Cindy

Dear Beloved,

What does it mean to you to “Be the Church?”

Many of us have been members of The Church of the Red Rocks (or of any church) for so long we might not know

how to answer that question. I ask the question because

we are an unusual church! God continues to bless our worship with the Holy Spirit’s presence, amazing music,

and the blessing of so many visitors! One of my favorite things about worship at CRR - you never know who God is

going to send through our doors. On any given Sunday

(and throughout the week) we welcome more of God’s beloved children than any other church I’ve ever attended.

So we know that God is doing amazing things at CRR.

What about us? What are we called to do? An article from Patheos.com recently crossed my path, (it popped up on

my Facebook feed) written by Frederick Schmidt about churches. Specifically, about the things people need to

hear from churches - but are rarely said. We know that

church is about more than just a building - it’s about who we are and more importantly, whose we are. I thought

I’d take a minute this month and share what Schmidt wrote because I will be working together with you to

incorporate these six things into who we are as the Body of

Christ…

“Welcome!”

A welcome is not just something offered at the front door.

It’s not just about a few words at the front door. It’s a smile. It’s warmth. It’s ease with the stranger. It’s not

something that the visitor hears. It is something that the

visitor senses. Welcome is a state of mind that embraces newcomers. The visitor concludes, “I could belong here.”

“You can find God here.”

The service should suggest the presence of the transcendent God. Not the remote, prime mover - God who winds up the

world and exits stage right. Not a God who is the ghost in the machine. Not a cosmic buddy. What people need to

know is that the Holy is here, present and tangible.

“What do you feel God is calling you to do?”

Too many people who enter our doors hear us say, “We are glad you are here. These are the gaps in our ‘org chart.’

Got Ashes?

Ash Wednesday falls on February 26th this year and Pastor

Cindy will be joining Rev. Ree Hudson and Rev. Monica Whitaker on Hwy. 89A from 12:00 noon - 2:00 p.m. for

anyone passing to by to receive ashes.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a 40 day

season of fasting, reflection, and atonement - a time to repair past wrongs.

Early Christians first celebrated Ash Wednesday during the

early Middle Ages (around the 10th century) with the ashes

symbolizing our mortality and repentance. Basically, the ashes remind us that life is short, and by wearing the

ashes we are reminded of whose we are.

“By handing out ashes on the street we are able to extend Christ’s love to people who might not enter into a church,”

Pastor Cindy said.

EVERYONE is welcome to receive the ashes!

Watch the Red Rock News for more information or contact Pastor Cindy!

SPIRIT OF THE ROCKS Every Saturday at 5:00 p.m.

“Spirit of the Rocks” is a diverse community that sings, prays, shares meals and has conversations about life and faith;

responding to the Spirit's call, we minister to one and other and serve the needs of those we encounter.

About us: We are a radically inclusive spiritual community grounded in the Gospels where ALL are welcomed, no exceptions; we are ALL created in the image of God.

The center of our communal spiritual life is a weekly conversational gathering where we rejoice in God’s gift of creation, thank

God for our many blessings, console each other in our trials, pray and sing together, and share our thoughts on a weekly topic

and how it impacts our life and our faith.

We extend the joy of our faith through communal mission projects in the Verde Valley. This is the Spirit … of the Rocks, where we participate in an exploration of our faith together.

The goal of our gatherings is to learn from and celebrate the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth; a life and teachings that concentrated on the here and now and sought to help us live life and live it abundantly.

The shape of the Weekly gathering:

We gather…. We listen for a word of wisdom...

We talk and wonder together…,

We pray together…. We imagine how to walk the talk…

We go in Grace….and eat some dessert if it's available

Experiments in living the way: Community service projects individually and together.

Location: The Church of the Red Rocks, Painted Cliffs Hall. Music: Boom box or musician as available.

Breaking of the bread: Monthly potluck as part of service (shorter leader presentation and blessing of the food followed

by small group discussions around tables), possible weekly volunteers to bring “dessert” at the end of the gathering. Childcare: Children are encouraged to participate, bring your stroller, a playpen, coloring books….

HIGHLIGHTING our MINISTRIES

This month:

FAITH IN ACTION MINISTRY (FIAM)

Chair: John Lothrop

Summarized from the Constitution and By-Laws, the purpose of FIAM shall be:

To inform the Church membership of the greater

mission of the UCC.

To deal with the Christian aspects of social issues.

To evaluate the financial needs and requests for support from various local and national organizations.

To distribute funds from an annual budget approved by

Council.

Each Ministry has hosted at least one Fellowship Time during the calendar year. This will change in March, but for February,

the Fellowship Time is being hosted by FIAM.

John’s photo is on the COUNCIL bulletin board in Painted Cliffs Hall. Make sure to take a peek at his picture so you will

recognize him for questions or to say HI! Also, let him know

what a great job the Ministry is doing.

To my friends at The Church of the Red Rocks,

I am so very grateful for all the prayers for my brother Lee and our family during his struggles with

Lymphoma. All the notes and cards that you have

sent since his passing have been very touching and healing for me. God’s Blessings to you all.

FEBRUARY......From the Latin word Februarius, meaning "to

purify". It was known as the "Month of Purification" during ancient Roman times. It is a transitional time, finding itself just

after a month of reflection and New Year’s resolutions.

FEBRUARY FLOWER: Violet

Although most flowers require warmer temperatures to bloom and thrive, violets are one of a few that survive in cold

weather. Their deep purple petals amidst the cold white snow evoke feelings of hope in the coming spring, the promise of

better, happier times. This flower was used in ancient

ceremonies and festivals in weaving crowns, which signified protection from mental ruin.

DID YOU KNOW? Valentine's Day - the

holiday of love. There is actually historical significance tied to this day. Some stories

tell of St. Valentine, who was known for

administering the sacrament of marriage to military men and their prospective wives,

even though it was banned by the emperor. Others associated the day with an

ancient Roman festival of fertility and

purification known as Lupercalia.

Whatever speaks to you of transition, love and hope during difficult times....remember, there are no rights and wrongs in

symbolic interpretation. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

MARDI GRAS (French for "Fat Tuesday") in

Christianity is the last day before the beginning of Lent, a period of fasting and

repentance leading up to Easter, which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

FEBRUARY BIRTHSTONE is the Amethyst. It is also the Zodiac stone for the constellation of Pisces. Amethyst is associated

with spirituality, wisdom, sobriety, and security.

The current EDGE book, is "The Faiths of the Founding Fathers" by David L. Holmes.

From the publisher: In this compact book,

David L. Holmes offers a clear, concise and illuminating look at the spiritual

beliefs of our founding fathers. He begins with an informative account of the

religious culture of the late colonial era, surveying the religious groups in each

colony. In particular, he sheds light on the

various forms of Deism that flourished in America, highlighting the profound influence this

intellectual movement had on the founding generation. Holmes then examines the individual beliefs of a variety of

men and women who loom large in our national history.

He finds that some, like Martha Washington, Samuel Adams, John Jay, Patrick Henry, and Thomas Jefferson's

daughters, held orthodox Christian views. But many of the most influential figures, including Benjamin Franklin,

George Washington, John and Abigail Adams, Jefferson, James and Dolley Madison, and James Monroe, were

believers of a different stripe. Respectful of Christianity,

they admired the ethics of Jesus, and believed that religion could play a beneficial role in society. But they

tended to deny the divinity of Christ, and a few seem to have been agnostic about the very existence of God.

Although the founding fathers were religious men, Holmes

shows that it was a faith quite unlike the Christianity of today's evangelicals. Holmes concludes by examining the

role of religion in the lives of the presidents since World War II and by reflecting on the evangelical resurgence

that helped fuel the reelection of George W. Bush.

An intriguing look at a neglected aspect of our history, the book will appeal to American history buffs as well as to

anyone concerned about the role of religion in American

culture.

EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES

A New Conversation Group Begins…. In Clarkdale!

As new members of CRR, Pam and David Stabenfeldt are delighted to

have found a welcoming place for contemplation and action. “It’s great to be part of such an engaged and engaging group of folks! Since we live in Clarkdale, we find it challenging to make our way to Sedona for the various study groups. With that in mind, we are offering a Conversation/Study Group in our home, beginning February 3 at 10:30 a.m. Our intention is to meet the first and third Mondays of each month.”

They are proposing using the book Call It Grace: Finding Meaning

in a Fractured World as a catalyst for your time together. The author, Serene Jones is a minister ordained in the Disciples of Christ

and the United Church of Christ. She currently serves as the 16th president — and the first female president — of Union Theological

Seminary in New York City.

Who is invited: Anyone interest in faith and life

Where: Pam and Dave Stabenfeldts’ home: 2041 Crossroads Blvd, Clarkdale 86324

Cell Phone # (661)340-1665 Pam or (661)340-1655 David When: First and Third Monday of each month,

beginning February 3 at 10:30-Noon

Why this book? Serene Jones describes theology as the place and story you think of when you ask yourself about the meaning of your

life, the world, and the possibility of God. For her, that place is a “dusty

piece of land” on the plains of Oklahoma where she grew up. “I go there to find my story — my theology. I go there to be born again; to

be made whole; to unite with what I was, what I am, and what I will become.” In her work as a public theologian, Jones explores theology

as clarifying lens on the present — from grace to repentance to the importance of moving from grieving to mourning.

Using the stories of her life, we’ll look in on our own stories of life and

faith. If this short intro piques your interest, you can listen in on an

amazing interview by Krista Tippett with Dr. Jones to discover more about this book. https://onbeing.org/programs/serene-jones-on-grace/

Tuesday, February 18 at 4:30 p.m. Visiting NAU Scholars Speaker: Thomas Just

Title: Confronting Antisemitism in Today's Germany and Poland

Description: 75 years after the defeat of Nazi Germany, Europe

continues to experience an alarming rate of anti-Semitic incidents. This

problem has been compounded by a resurgence of far right and ultranationalist groups exploiting societal divisions. In this talk, Thomas

Just will address the current rise of antisemitism in Germany and Poland and how to develop policies to combat it.

Thomas Just serves as Lecturer in the School of Politics and Global

Studies at Arizona State University. He received his Ph.D. in International Relations from Florida International University in 2017. His

research focuses on the use of legal and public diplomacy strategies to

counter extremist ideologies and work toward reconciliation in societies that have endured traumatic events.

Dive deep into the history of the last days before the crucifixion…

Jesus’ final days were full of risk. Every move he made was filled with

anticipation, danger, and the potential for great loss or great reward.

Jesus risked his reputation when he entered Jerusalem in a victory parade. He risked his life when he dared to teach in the Temple. His

followers risked everything when they left behind their homes, or anointed him with costly perfume. We take risks as we read and re-

read these stories, finding new meanings and new challenges.

In Entering the Passion of Jesus: A Beginner’s Guide to Holy Week, author, professor, and biblical scholar Amy-Jill

Levine explores the biblical texts surrounding the Passion story. She shows us how the text raises ethical and spiritual

questions for the reader, and how we all face risk in our

Christian experience.

This year we’ll have the opportunity to connect with one another during our Lenten study of Levine’s book.

The study will run during the 6 Wednesdays in Lent,

beginning on March 4th at 11:00 a.m., at the church.

Books can be purchased online and EVERYONE is welcome! Questions? See Pastor Cindy.

BIBLE STUDY What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus Christ?

How can we effectively disciple others?

Christian bookstores are full of “how to” manuals that seek to answer these questions.

The early church had a discipling manual too-the

book of Matthew. It was written to teach us how to be a disciple of Jesus and how to disciple

others. We will cover Matthew’s Gospel in two

parts, 1:1-16:20 and 16:21-28:20. The first half will focus on the identity and authority of Jesus.

The second half of our study will focus on Jesus as he encounters opposition and persecution

culminating in the cross and resurrection. From

beginning to end, Matthew is an exciting and challenging gospel!

New Prayer Group to form in March

We have an amazing group of prayer warriors on our prayer chain! So why would we want another

prayer group? Great question. Our goal will be to lift up, in confidentiality, the prayers of our church members, guests, staff, and others in our communities. We will look to create a sacred space to share

with any who would like to come join us.

The new group will meet once a week for the first 6 weeks, then decide how we want to continue.

Not sure how to pray, there is room for you. Uncomfortable praying out loud, there is room for you. Feeling spiritually dry and withered, there is room for you. Seeking to rest in a Holy Space, there

is room for you. What will this be like? It will be whatever God calls us to each time we meet. Exciting things happen when we sit still and wait on the Lord, when we ask God to hear our

communal prayers, and when we reflect the amazing presence of God.

Come join us. Date, time and meeting location will be announced soon.

Tai Chi Chih A Moving Meditation

Monday and Thursday Mornings at 9:00 a.m. (NEW TIME!)

Join Mary Jane Scurlock and Sheryl Bertelson each Monday

and Thursday morning for Tai Chi Chih.

What is Tai Chi Chih? Tai Chi Chih is a moving meditation, not a martial art or

exercise program. The practice of 19 slow movements and

one pose reduces stress, improves balance and flexibility, and can even lower blood pressure. Many people feel that

regular practice of Tai Chi Chih brings a sense of clarity, centering and joy.

Contact Mary Jane or Sheryl if you have any questions, or

join them during the class any Monday or Thursday

morning.

Yin Yoga Class

Wednesdays at 8:15 a.m.

Church member Robert Johnson, MD is pleased to offer a

free weekly Yin Yoga class to folks of all ages and abilities. Class will be offered each Wednesday from 8:15

to 9:30 a.m., in Painted Cliffs Hall. Robert (Bob) is a certified yoga teacher who taught in Hawaii for several

years.

No previous yoga

experience is needed. In Yin Yoga we use

‘props’ (blankets, blocks, pillows, and

possibly a chair) to

support the body as we gently work on

stretching our connective tissue (ligaments, tendons, etc.) Students practice safely at their own level of ability.

We hold the stretch for a brief time allowing for a state of relaxation leading to more freedom of movement with

less pain. Students often report an overall sense of well-

being following practice.

What to bring: Wear comfortable, loose clothing; yoga clothing if

you have it.

A bottle of water Yoga mat, yoga blanket or 2 bath towels, 1 or 2

yoga blocks Bob brings extra supplies to class for students to

use as needed

Email Bob with any questions or concerns: [email protected]

Hope House of Sedona Update

January 2020

Hello all,

The last time you heard from me I gleefully informed you that we had attained property for Hope House. Much has transpired as we continue to move forward. First, I want to explain the purchase and how the City of Sedona so

graciously assisted us. Per the CDBG grant, we cannot sign a contract until we have the grant money, which makes a purchase nearly impossible for us. With the first property we had, there was a handshake agreement that we would

purchase the property once we received the grant funds. As you all know, that agreement fell through.

Property and housing

As we searched for other properties, it became clear that sellers wanted their money right away. Part of the grant requirement is that an environmental review must be done on the property before the grant funds are released. This

review can take up to 3-5 months. When we found the property we currently have, the seller could not wait that long for

the money. So, the City stepped in and purchased the property for $200,000. When we receive our money, we will immediately reimburse the City for the full purchase price. The property is close to Hwy 89A, shopping and transportation,

making it perfect for this project. The City has been extremely supportive of this mission and is doing everything they can to pave the way for our success. We are extremely grateful. Hope House must be a community wide effort to be

successful in helping our most vulnerable citizens, homeless children and their families.

Prior to the environmental review being started, the Hope House Board of Directors must submit a new budget and plans

for the housing on the property to NACOG (Northern AZ Council of Governments). In order to do this, we are waiting to hear about a cost estimate to purchase and install an IRC (International Residential Code) factory-built 4 bedroom, 4 bath

home on the property. This is where we would like to start. We are currently working with someone from Blue Ribbon Manufacturing in Flagstaff on a suitable floor plan.

Phase I will be the installation of this home. Per the CDBG grant, we have until June 2021 to have Hope House open and running. Phase II of this project will be additional fundraising and purchase of a second home. It is our goal to split the

property into two parcels so we can make two homes available to help those in need.

Meeting with neighbors

We recently had a meeting with the Hope House neighbors. An invitation was extended to 18 residences in the neighborhood. In addition to some of the neighbors, Karen Osburn and Warren Campbell from the City were there. We

want to keep the neighbors informed as to what we are doing and form a positive relationship with them. We also want to give them an opportunity to air their concerns and have their questions answered. We assured them that each family

will be properly vetted before being allowed in the house. We are working with both Catholic Charities and the Sedona Oak Creek School District on the vetting. Being good neighbors is very important to us. As such, we intend to put in an

attractive house, keep the property well maintained and be quiet and friendly.

On-going assistance to those in need of housing

The Church of the Red Rocks has recently been able to assist two families needing help. The first was a mother and her twins who were about to be evicted from their home just before Christmas. The City had come to us to ask if we could

help. We took a special offering in our congregation and came up with enough money to pay the back fees this woman

owed, thus enabling the family to stay in their home. As the mother said, they could not have asked for a better Christmas gift. We had money left over from that special offering which we have put in reserve to help others. Recently,

we were contacted by the homeless liaison for the school district, Deana DeWitt. She had a mother and four kids who needed lodging for 3 nights while she looked for a low rent place for them in Sedona. We were able to put them up in a

Sedona motel for those 3 nights. Unfortunately, no rental was found for them and that family is now living in a shelter in

Flagstaff. This is a perfect example of why we need Hope House. This family could have stayed there until at least the end of the school year so they would not experience even more upheaval in their lives.

Fundraising

We are still struggling with our website, www.hopehouseofsedona.org, so if you know of anyone who has time to help us,

we would appreciate knowing about that. We have just set up PayPal and are in the process of getting our donation page done. In the meantime, if you wish to contribute to our 501(c)(3), you can make a check payable to “Hope House of

Sedona” and mail it to : Hope House of Sedona, 54 Bowstring Dr., Sedona, AZ 86336. In addition to needing more money for the first house and its installation and fees, we will continue to fundraise for the annual operating budget and the

second home.

Many thanks to Pastor David Brandfass of Christ Lutheran Church, Sedona. He applied for and received an $8000 grant

for Hope House from the Grand Canyon Synod (ELCA). We will receive this in installments over the next year. This money makes a huge difference.

Volunteers needed We also continue to look for more volunteers. As mentioned above, Hope House cannot succeed unless it is a community

effort. Many more volunteers are needed. On Saturday, March 7th, 2:00-4:00 p.m., we will be holding a kick-off meeting for all the Hope House volunteers. That will be held at The Church of the Red Rocks, in Painted Cliffs Hall. Now that we

have the property, it is time to get together and give every task group of volunteers an opportunity to set plans and goals for the coming year. Whether you have previously signed up to be a volunteer or not, please plan to attend this event to

get the latest news on Hope House and address where we plan to go from here. If you have already expressed a desire

to be on a task group, you will receive a separate invitation from this.

Many blessing for all you have done and continue to do for Hope House of Sedona.
