February 2020 E-newsletter Enhanced Mobility Grant New Horizons is proud to announce that we were approved for funding to support individuals with disabilities through the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments' Enhanced Mobility Grant . The Council approved funding for 24 projects across the region that support mobility for seniors and individuals with disabilities. The grants totaling nearly $9.5 million with matching funds - are provided under the Federal Transit Administration's Enhanced Mobility Program. Lessons Learned Thanks to a $50,000 grant received from the Prince George's County Local Development Council in 2019, New Horizons has increased access to community-based recreational, volunteer and employment opportunities within 3 miles of the MGM Grand for 60 participants, who reside in the impact zone. Enhanced Mobility Grant

MACS Legislative Breakfast

In attendance at this year'sMACS (Maryland Association ofCommunity Services)Legislative Breakfast from NewHorizons were; JackieTrantham, Michael Summers,Kim Turner and Michael North.The breakfast was held onThursday, January 16, at the

Governor Calvert House located in Annapolis. Held just before thestart of the 2020 legislative session, the breakfast allows members achance to get a preview of what to expect during the upcominglegislative session. The meeting also includes updates on issuesimpacting the intellectual and developmental disability community.

Rural Maryland Council Grant

Thanks to funding from the Rural Maryland Council grant, NewHorizons was able to purchase 2 Dodge Caravans, each seating 8participants, to assist with transporting those living in Charles, St.Mary's, and Calvert counties to employment related activities -including taking them to paid community-based jobs in retail, foodservice, customer service, clerical, and environmental services. Ourjob developers work closely with our participants to assist them withresume writing, researching job opportunities, transporting them tointerviews, as well as teaching job readiness skills.
